payless: Michael Essien enstranged father also claimed Essien is 37 years old. Imagine Samuel Eto claiming to be 30 wheareas he played at USA '94 at the age of 17. Kanu Nwakwo graduated from secondary school in Owerri in 1989 but he claimed he was 16 during Under 17 World Cup in Japan 1993. All these Nigerians and African players need to stop cheating. You sounded so sure I thought you had your facts right. Kanu Nwankwo could not have left secondary school in 1989 because nobody in the old Imo State graduated from secondary school that year. The set started the 6:3:3:4 system in Imo state and spent six years in secondary school instead of five. They graduated 1990. Nwankwo for your information graduated 1991. |

If you had read this thread from the biggining to the end, you would have seen that someone who went to school with him confirmed my point that he graduated in 1989. Kanu Nwakwo said it himself when he was interviewed on Larry Echiejile (Izamoje) show on NTA in 1996 before going to the Olympics. The very interview still very fresh in my memory. I will never forget the interview. At what age did Kanu start to play for Inwuanyawun National of Owerri? He joined Inwuanyawun National in 1990. How old was he when he joined Inwuanyanwun in 1990? Read the next post if you can. |

I graduated from pry 6 to JSS1 in 1989-90. 6:3:3:4 started in 1990. I was part of the set that sat for the first common entrance examination in Nigeria. You claimed Kanu did not graduate from secondary school in 1989 with your bogus proof. He graduated in 1989 and I heard him say it to Larry Izamoje in 1996 interview on NTA. |

all i see here is cause to celebrate a legend who played till the grand old age of 46! how many have achieved that? if one european players till the age of 36 he would be honored and respected. ryt now i dont care how much any of these guys lied about their ages; all i know is that my early childhood memories are largely inclusive of hearing adults chanting and yelling the names of taribo west, Daniel "da Bull" amokachi, celestine Babayaro (watched him a bit myself especially during his newcastle days), Taribo West, rashidi yekini, finidi george etc. as a result these men have become legends for me even though i never got to see most of them play live. why are we trying to tear down their legacy? age cheating is wrong and shuld be discourage/eradicated in the present and future generation but let the old hands rest in peace. |

Some schools had the waec up to 1989 while others stopped in 88 and started the ssce system in 1990, meaning no one graduated in 1989, in the latter case. It wasnt necessarily a statewide thing although technically it was supposed to be. so, individual schools determined if they had a graduating class that year or not. |

Lets get this right. There was no WAEC in Imo state in 1989, as the state started implementing the 6334 education system that year. That means that the set in 1889 class 5 went to ss3 in 1990. But it was not implemented nationwide. My elder brother was transferred from Imo state to IBadan in Oyo state and in that 1989, he sat for his WAEC at Emmanuel college, Samonda, Ibadan. So, it is wrong for anyone to have accused Kanu of writing WAEC in 89. False |

Andre Uweh: Lets get this right. every state implemented the 6334 ssce diploma in 1990 [as far as i know]. however, individual schools made the decision whether or not to have a graduating class in 89. agreed, most [or many] did not, and were maybe not supposed to, but some did. on whether kanu finished in 89 or 90/91, or later, its not certain. He finished whenever he says he finished. |

dayokanu: This was my exact situation and because I studied under the 5 year programme in secondary, I had my school cert at age 14, spent a year quarreling with my dad on my chosen course and eventually bagged my first degree in law at age 20. It was not a big deal at all. I was called the Nigerian Bar at age 21. I wrote jamb once and scored 297 when the first cut off for my course in my Uni was 295. The facts are verifiable. |
