Considering our threat level I don't see the SANDF ever having a budget more than 2% of GDP.....which would be about $8 bil now.

IMO Nigeria should at least be spending between 2-3% on defence currently....just imagine the NDF with a $12 bil budget!!

Algeria spend more than 6% percent of GDP on defence, that's like SANDF and NDF having a budget of $24 billion...... Image having a fvcking $24 bil defence budget....SAAF would by flying 150 Gripens, SAN would be sailing 24 Valours and The Army driving 2000 Leopard 2s

I don't agree with spending that much money on defence. I admire the Algerian military, however i do not wish to see such a defence build-up in Nigeria. There are hundreds of things to spend that money on. Considering our threat level, Nigeria's maximum Defence budget should be $4.5 - 5 billion.

No offence to the Algerian, however i can bet with that sort of money in the defence sector, corruption in the military would be very high.

There military is massive. 9 new Corvettes (3 from China, 6 Russia), i think 4 Meko 200 frigates, including additional Kilo class submarines. 42 MI-28NE and 1000 Fauch APCs, all new.

Cool. Have been there . I actually hate anything concerning helicopter engineering.
It looks more technical than aircraft engineering.

Who's the author ?

Guys, this place has the potential to be the next African militaryphotos.com! IDK,if you've noticed but any page has at least 3 or 4 different topics struggling for attention and the quality of posts has improved significantly from the original abortion of a thread. Imo,we need a specific nairaland subforum to properly address these topics. Let me put this on the other thread-henry240 and everyone else do we have a vote? Do we need a vote?
This would be a win for both nairaland in terms of vastly increased traffic and military inclined posters in need of an African forum.

6 Tiger corvettes, that's just impressive.

algeria was under embargo from 1991 to 2001 , so it's spend a lot to replace it old equipement , + mos important the geopolitics situation it's not the same , north africa was always on the history a theater of wars , we have security problems in all our borders , chaos libya , malian insurgents terrorist , problems with morocco and western sahara , and tunisia also have terrorist problems now ,+ Gibraltar + NATO just in front of us and others superpowers who are note happy from algerian policy ! if we don't be careful we can easly be transformed like syria , libya like they try to do in the 90's . so there is no devellopement if you don't protect your country from being erased and returned ton stone age . and for others sector of devellopment algeria is one of the most develloped country in africa .

The point of your weapons purchase is understandable. You want to pull-off a little show in case NATO decides to say hi.

From a social view, citizens just get a feeling that the government has plenty of cash THEN they start demanding ridiculous things. Study case is South Africa - a few new jets, frigates and submarines got people thinking the state is loaded now they demand free tertiary education... The government is now trying to hide any form of military acquisition under the Secrecy Bill because if we ever even buy a lousy aircraft and it went to the media, the country would go into flames.

Point here: Your spend plenty of money on the military, you get social unrest.

We mooted this idea to @Seun for a specific military sub-forum, but he said the "Foreign Affairs" section should be used instead.

I kinda agree, the traffic isn't there to support a military sub-forum. Take this thread, there are only 11 regular posters in this thread, also content is hard to come by in Africa. Until content and participation/interest improves, creating a military sub-forum in my opinion would be a waste of time.

Djiboutian Army soldiers will be able to see in the dark after completing NVG training. The training comes as the troops prepare for a two-year deployment to Somalia, as part of AMISOM's effort to remove al-Shabaab from the region.

“For NNS ARADU, survey is being conducted.
To put ARADU back means deploying
resources into the system. But once we get
the recommendation of the survey, we will be
able to take appropriate actions,” said Ibas.

Ibas is the current Chief of Naval Staff. The fate of NNS Aradu is still uncertain. I believe she would be replaced and giving a "Viking Burial". Although i favour a refit, i don't currently see how that's feasible. Until then, we would have to wait and see. Aradu has become a campaign promise every defence minister and CNS makes.

I think what African countries spend on defense should be directly proportional to the threat they face. Most of the threats faced by African countries is internal. It only makes sense to spend less on Police and Intelligence rather than hi-tech military weapons. South Africa and Algeria are special because they have large military industries and strong economies. But it is ridiculous when a country like Uganda goes and buys Su30 considering the fuel consumption(twin engine), engine will have to be flown to Russia for overhaul, cost of training, munitions......

IMO the only defense spending for African countries should be for creating local production to create jobs and grow the economy

PLEASE NIGERIANS STOP REQUESTING FOR THE REFIT OF ARADU, WE DESERVE BETTER THAN AN AGEING SHIP.

WE NEED FOUR UNITS OF 4000+ TON CLASS FRIGATES.

ARADU SHOULD BE SUNK BY TORPEDOES.

ALSO PLEASE STOP COMPARING HER TO A DESTROYER. SHE IS A FRIGATE AND EVEN LIGHT COMPARED TO HER CONTEMPORARIES.

WE NEED FOUR 4000+ FRIGATES NOT ONE.
