Whatever aged the Aradu would age other new frigates if purchased. The ship itself is not old, I mean we still have strike crafts commissioned in the 70s still in active service in the SAN. Before rushing into refitting or buying a frigate, your navy could better launch a formal inquiry on how a young ship like the Aradu got into this current state otherwise your navy could keep going in circles.

OPV's still in service are from the late 80's and are at the end of their hull lives - 4-5 more years and they will have to be scrapped no matter what.

If Aradu is double hulled it may be worth it, but otherwise, it soon wont be able to stop in anyones ports.

the few frigates,OPV,Oiler e.t.c just like what happened to iraq navy during Gulf war 1.will be totally eliminated thus not hindering an amphibious landing on your shores.now if you have land based anti-ship missiles,a barrage of those anti-ship missiles (even sub-sonic anti-ship missiles) would seriously threaten any ship anchored or sailing across and near your coast.
even after an israeli warship was hit by a hezbollah anti-ship missile, israel was not able to track the launcher, because those launchers can easily hide among civilian traffic or sheltered among the sprawling urban dwelling near the coast

But we have no such threats.

They couldent track because they had the relevant radar turned off at the time and the impact decaliberated the system.

The targetting systems allot of shore based radars use are like a floodlight of radar waves, you cant not see it if you are looking (properly)

Not to sound like an alarmist but many African countries are about to be left permanently underdeveloped with the advent of exponential technologies.
Why are you ignoring the counter measures used by the warship?

As they are successful and the cruise missiles aren't.

We have that capability(Including production) in Africa.

Not really.

The SADF introduced Soldier 2000.
We no longer operate in the dry(desert and bush) parts of our region.

The problems with the Aradu all boils down to funding. We have one the largest fleets in Africa and an impressive fleet, however not much can be achieved if the fleet is not properly funded. If funding does not improve, the fate of the Nigerian navy and it's general outlook would continue to be bleak.

Despite our funding problems, the Navy's posture is still visible, and can still deploy an Armada of ships, this is a very good thing.

Anyway, Lawmakers have promised improved funding for the Navy in 2017's budget, and increased extra-budgetary allocations for the navy.

Body maintenance should be done on our ships. I just love the fact that the navy has enough ships.
I'll be happy if the navy can operate her own ISR aircrafts such as the airforce ATR.

The trick is to have a small efficient navy, buy what is really needed and easy to maintain (even by local supplies). Lawmakers are very unreliable, one moment your navy could be swimming in money then down the years it's mud-stuck when fighting insurgents is no longer a priority.

Our Navy fleet is very large, it is pleasing that we can put enough ships at sea. However our Revised Naval Transformation Plan calls for 46 ships, 3 Submarines and 42 helicopters over a 10 year period. It's a bit difficult to track what we've done. The classifications of ships by the Navy is also broad. As for helicopters, the Navy currently has 11 units in service. 31 units to go.

Our navy's objective is to develop a fleet capable of continuous and sustaining presence in the EEZ in defence of Nigeria's maritime interests.

According to the RNTP by 2013, the Nigerian navy should have received 4 Fast Attack Crafts, 8 Helicopters and 1 Hydrographic ship. The plan was to also build an sell vessels, again we fall short in this area.

Anyway with 5 ships almost completing their refit, the plan should be back on track. We would have to see what 2017 brings.

Small & Efficient has always been fiction. Especially in the pirates infested waters of the gulf of guinea, although since the Navy launched Operation "Tsare Tseku", piracy attacks across the entire gulf of guinea ( Angola - Senegal) has been low.

My point is, there has to be a constant presence at sea, at the moment the Nigerian navy can deploy 8 proper ships at sea. With 5 more due to be launched soon, that number would increase to 13. No matter how efficient, even if it is the Norwegian navy, you'll still need those ships providing a constant presence at sea. It is the only way to secure a maritime environment for national prosperity.
