PoliticsJang Is Plateau’s Problem, Useni. by 13volts(op): 7:29am On Jul 12, 2012
Retired General Jeremiah Useni yesterday said Governor
Jonah Jang is the real problem of Plateau State, which has
been plagued by internicine communal violence that led to
the death of a senator on Sunday.
Useni, who is chairman of the Arewa Consultative Forum’s
board of trustees, said instead of Jang to be a unifying
leader as governor, he has been playing divisive politics
among the tribes in the state thereby fuelling the cycle of
bloodshed.
“The state governor, Jonah Jang, is not doing anything to
allay the fears of every citizens in the state. Some feel
marginalised; some are called all sorts of names. He says
he will not like to deal with some people; he doesn’t take
advice even from elders,” said Useni, who is a former FCT
minister and now a leader of opposition Democratic
Poeples Party (DPP).
He spoke in separate interviews with Daily Trust and the
BBC in Abuja yesterday.
“The problem is the Constitution giving all the powers to
one man who refuses to cooperate; there is nothing we
can do. He is not relating to people, the Berom themselves
are divided—we have the Du versus other Beroms. Then
you have the non-Beroms including Hausa-Fulani and
ourselves, we are not Beroms,” Useni said.
“One expects that as a governor of a state, everyone
should be yours irrespective of tribe and other affiliations
because everyone voted for you. So you cannot be a
Berom governor or Hausa governor, everybody must be
treated equally, failure to do that is inviting anarchy.”
Useni said Jang does not cooperate with the Federal
Government in trying to solve the crises in the state.
“He is not cooperating with the Federal government. The
Federal Government is helping to secure the state and you
are saying that the state of emergency in two local
governments be lifted. He said that and two days later the
latest violence happened,” he said.
“Like what former Benue Governor Akume said, whether
Jang likes it or not he is the governor and must wake up
and assume his responsibility as the chief security officer
of the state and not to sit down and be passing the buck.
“He should therefore have a rethink and work with
everybody, listen and work with elders whether old or
young. Younger ones may even give better advice and put
his house in order and treat everybody equally as the
governor of the state. For now, that is lacking.”
But Jang’s spokesman James Mannok dismissed Useni’s
allegations, saying: “By Jeremiah Useni’s assertions, is he
implying that leadership has failed in every state that there
is crisis?”
He said although the Federal Government is actually in
charge of security in the state, the governor was doing
everything he needed to do in cooperation with all security
agencies.
On allegation that Jang does not heed to advice, Mannok
said Useni himself has consistently refused to use
opportunities given to him to contribute his part to the
administration of the state by shunning invitations for him
to attend stakeholders’ meetings that the governor
convenes.
Useni yesterday also spoke on the general administration
of state matters, saying Jang has failed to discharge his
responsibilities. “Civil servants have not been paid, even in
local governments some are being owed four months and
when they are paid, they are paid half salary as if they are
doing half works,” he said.
He said another unfortunate thing is that a state
government that is not paying workers salary is building a
new government house with N4 billion while borrowing
money to finance agriculture and water.
Useni said Jang is not capable of running the state “unless
he changes his heart. Don’t forget that there was a time
the state was in turmoil for eight days. He was in India,
sitting down there. He didn’t rush down and there have
been many cases like that.
“When you advice him, he doesn’t listen to advice and
when he was asked why he doesn’t take advice, he said
he doesn’t have to take advice from anybody. How do you
expect a governor to say that? Who doesn’t take advice,
no matter how wise or clever you are? Even (the Biblical)
King Solomon used to take advice.”
Useni said the State House of Assembly is incapable of
doing anything about Jang “since they did not win
elections and cannot be accountable to people.”
He added: “We are praying that one day he would listen.”
Asked to comment on calls for withdrawal of the military
from Plateau State, Useni said, “I know some people are
saying it and Jang is one of them. You are handling the
security before and there is problem, then the government
deployed troops. He needs to cooperate with the Federal
Government.”
In his BBC Hausa interview, Useni responded to the calls
for troops withdrawal from Plateau thus: “This is nonsense!
How can they handle these crises without the presence of
military?”
PoliticsOctober 1, 2010 Bombing: I Told Sylva, Boyloaf, Two Others – SSS Witness by 13volts(op): 7:09am On Jul 12, 2012
By Ikechukwu Nnochiri
ABUJA — The ongoing trial of alleged masterminds
of the October 1, 2010 bomb blast has assumed a
fresh dimension, as a prosecution witness,
yesterday, accused former governor of Bayelsa
State, Timipre Sylva and three other persons, of
complicity.
The witness who made the allegation before a
Federal High Court in Abuja, equally indicted a
former Secretary to the Brass Local Government
Area in Bayelsa State and member of the
Presidential Committee on Amnesty, Mr Victor Ben,
as well as a repentant ex-militant, Ebikabowei a.k.a
Boyloaf.
He made the allegations while testifying as the fourth
prosecution witness in the trial of one of the alleged
perpetrators of the bombing that resulted in the
death of 12 persons while Nigeria celebrated its 50th
Independence Day, Edmund Ebiware.
It would be recalled that Justice Gabriel Kolawole
had on May 3, okayed separate trial for Ebiware,
who was hitherto facing terrorism charges alongside
Charles Okah who is the younger brother to the
embattled ex-leader of the Movement for the
Emancipation of the Niger Delta, MEND, Henry Okah,
and the 3rd accused person, Obi Nwabueze.
Ebiware was specifically alleged to have exchanged
incriminating text messages with the erstwhile
Director-General of the Ibrahim Babamasi
Babangida, IBB, Campaign Organisation and
Chairman of Daar Communications, Chief Raymond
Dokpesi, prior to the twin bomb blasts at Eagle
Square, in Abuja.
At his resumed trial, yesterday, the witness who was
masked by the State Security Service, SSS, which
simply identified him as “Mr X”, while under cross
examination, alleged that he informed Sylva about
plans by Henry Okah to carry out the bomb attacks.
His testimony
He said he got wind of the planned attacks from his
friend, one Emmanuel Allison, who was earlier
declared wanted by the SSS, adding that he equally
informed the accused person, Ebiware.
The witness who further told the court that he was
arrested with the accused person on October 3,
2010, under questioning by the prosecuting counsel,
Mr Goddy Uche, confessed that it was he and his
friend, Allison, that carried out the Warri bombings.
He said they had meetings with Henry before the
Independence Day bombings, saying he was
exempted from trial after he volunteered to
cooperate with the SSS in the course of the trial of
the other accused persons who denied complicity in
the crime.
He said: “I knew Edmund through Stanley Ogbakyri. I
knew Okah too and we have each other’s phone
number. And we do talk on phone. I knew with the
looks of things Okah wanted to cause more problems
after amnesty programme, because Okah felt the
programme was no longer going the way it was
originally designed to be.
“As at September 2010, I knew that there would be
a bomb blast in Abuja. I received a phone call from
Emma Harrisson that Henry Okah will bomb Abuja on
October 1, 2010. I called Edmund and told him what
I heard. He did not say anything.
“I reported what Harrison told me to Boyloaf and
Victor Ben. I reported to Sylva, as well as Zion
Amanda who was then serving as the Secretary of
Brass LGA. Amanda is very close to Sylva and I
knew he was also going to tell Sylva too.”
Meanwhile, the court admitted six statements
attached to the proof of evidence made by the
witness into evidence.
Further hearing on the matter was, yesterday,
adjourned till July 19.
Charles, whose elder brother, Henry is equally facing
a similar trial in South Africa, was apprehended by
the SSS on allegation that he and the other accused
persons, conspired with one Emmanuel Allison and
made direct attempt at endangering the life of
President Goodluck Jonathan by seeking to drive two
motor vehicles wired with time-regulated explosive
devices to the Eagle Square where the
Independence celebration was taking place.
They were also said to have between January 2 and
March 15, 2010, within Port-Harcourt Rivers State
and diverse places, conspired with Henry Okah,
Chima Orlu, (at large), and persons unknown and
made direct attempt to endanger the lives of the
Governor of Delta state, Edo state and Imo state by
seeking to drive two motor vehicles wired with time
regulated explosive devices into government house
annex, Warri, Delta State, the venue of the Vanguard
Post Amnesty Dialogue, where the said governors
were in attendance, in order to cause a bomb blast
for the purpose of levying war against the state.
The accused persons were initially arraigned before
the High Court on December 7, 2010 and
subsequently re-arraigned on January 12, 2011.

PoliticsBayelsa Ranks Top In HIV/AIDS Prevalence by 13volts(op): 6:04am On Jun 29, 2012
Bayelsa, one of the smallest States in Nigeria, is to be
unveiled as one with the highest rate of the dreaded
Human Immune Virus (HIV)/AIDS in the country, following
a new report on the killer disease.
Nation Evening Express gathered that the unenviable
record is already a source of grave concern for Governor
Seriake Dickson, who promised to set up an agency to
tackle the scourge.
Speaking while inaugurating Dr. Michael Awoli as the
new
Commissioner for Health on Tuesday, Governor Dickson
said the position of his State on the HIV/AIDS
prevalence scale is a cause for concern.
He said: “I just received a report concerning the high
prevalence of HIV/AIDS in this State. And that is very
disturbing. Within this week, I will announce the
composition of an agency to tackle the issue.
“It appears we are almost at the top. I do not know how
verifiable the statistics are, but it is very disturbing. It
means our future is in danger, and we must do
something about it.”
Dickson said the fight against the dreaded disease
would be institutionalized, adding that a Bill for the
establishment of an agency to tackle the spread in the
State would be forwarded to the State House of
Assembly.
He said an HIV/AIDS agency would be set up to replace the existing committee, in order to coordinate the policy and.programmes on HIV prevention, awareness and rehabilitation as well as treatment policy.
The governor disclosed that his administration has
“entered into a partnership with a foreign investor for
the completion of the 500-bed hospital located in the
State capital.”
The governor renewed the commitment of his
administration to build at least one General Hospital in
each of the headquarters of the eight Local Government Areas of the State.

Jokes EtcRe: 72 Virgins Boko Haram Are Dying For: See D Real Pictures by 13volts(m): 6:00pm On Jun 27, 2012
One of the biggest Israeli propaganda myths is the
invention of 72 virgins as a Muslim reward for suicide.
This has been repeated to the western world so often
that most people accept it as fact. The media wants us
to believe that there cannot be anything wrong with
Israelis – who must be seen as eternal victims – to
cause anyone to commit suicide as a means of striking
back at them. Heavens no!
The motivation for suicide bombings in Israel has
nothing to do with Jewish treatment of Palestinians.
Instead it has to do with the evilness of the Palestinians
and their religious beliefs. This is the “bill of goods”
they sell the western mind while at the same time
faking most, if not all, the “Islamic suicide bombings”
to blame on Muslims.
It is a sick and despicable mind that feels that it has a
right to attack, steal, murder and cause harm to others,
but if the others dare fight back they are wrong and
therefore terrorists. This one sentence describes Israeli
thinking and their policies. They believe they are
superior and entitled and they have a right to do
anything to other people and those people better not
retaliate. As a result, the Israelis have done more by
way of propaganda to take the legitimate fight of those
who are against their wrongs and demonize them. We
now have this ongoing enormous propaganda
campaign to make Palestinians and anyone belonging
to the same religion as Palestinians, to be seen as
mindless terrorists and suicide bombers with no cause
other than to do evil. And, of course, vicariously
receiving 72 virgins as a reward in paradise for
committing suicide to kill a few Israelis.
The Qur’an and valid authentic Hadiths are very clear
about what happens to anyone who commits suicide.
According to Hadiths:
Committing Suicide is a Major Sin:
Bukhari Volume 2, Book 23, Number 445: Narrated
Jundab the Prophet said, “A man was inflicted with
wounds and he committed suicide, and so Allah
said: My slave has caused death on himself
hurriedly, so I forbid Paradise for him.”
Bukhari Volume 8, Book 73, Number 73: Narrated
Thabit bin Ad-Dahhak: ”And if somebody commits
suicide with anything in this world, he will be
tortured with that very thing on the Day of
Resurrection.
There are many more Hadiths condemning suicide but I
would also like to reference the Qur’an. Amongst the
many verses against suicide here is one that makes it
very clear that the taking of one’s life is strongly
prohibited and that there is no reward for anyone who
does that.
But let there be amongst you Traffic and trade by
mutual good-will: Nor kill (or destroy) yourselves:
for verily God hath been to you Most Merciful! If any
do that in rancour and injustice,- soon shall We cast
them into the Fire: And easy it is for God. Qur’an
4:29 – 4:30
So where did the reward of 72 virgins in paradise for
suicide come from? Are there any Islamic teachings we
can point to endorsing that?
When we look at the highest authority in Islam, the
Quran, we find nothing in it endorsing rewards for
suicide. Instead we find the strongest condemnation
with severe punishments for those who commit suicide.
When we look at Hadiths, which after the Quran is
second in authority in Islam, we find nothing in the
authentic Bukhari and Muslim Hadiths endorsing
suicide. Instead we find strong condemnation for it.
Searching what Muslims refer to as Gharib Hadiths
(weak or strange Hadiths) we do find something about
72 wives but not virgins. The Hadith we find is the
following:
Sunan al-Tirmidhi Hadith 2562 says:
The Prophet Muhammad was heard saying: “The
smallest reward for the people of Paradise is an
abode where there are 80,000 servants and 72 wives,
over which stands a dome decorated with pearls,
aquamarine, and ruby, as wide as the distance from
Al-Jabiyyah [a Damascus suburb] to Sana’a
[Yemen]“
This is as a weak Hadith that has no Sanad — line or
sequence of narration. Although listed in an
authoritative collection, this particular Hadith has
technical weaknesses in its chain of transmitters and is
therefore not considered impeccable. As a result,
Muslims are not required to believe in it. Even if the
Hadith was true, there is nothing about it that says
that if someone commits suicide they would get 72
virgins in paradise.
Muslims know that the description of paradise or
heaven in Hadiths and Quran is allegorical. If not, then
Allah would have allowed us to take our bodies with us
when we die. But the vehicle by which we could enjoy
the physical things (especially 72 virgins ) mentioned as
being in heaven, is left behind here in this world to rot
and decay away. So we know for a fact that for
heavenly rewards, physical things of this world are
used to describe things totally non-physical. A Hadith to
keep in mind is as follows:
The Prophet said, “Nobody who dies and finds good
from Allah (in the Hereafter) would wish to come
back to this world even if he were given the whole
world and whatever is in it, except the martyr who,
on seeing the superiority of martyrdom, would like
to come back to the world and get killed again (in
Allah’s Cause).” (Sahih Bukhari, 4:52:53)
I am sure that 72 physical virgins are a small part of the
whole world to be given to someone who has
experienced paradise to come back to. Yet the prophet
(saaw) has said NOBODY who experiences paradise
would want to come back to this world even for
everything this world has to offer. If a man was getting
72 physical virgins in heaven, then surely he would get
more than that from the world and would be enticed to
come back.
On the other hand, martyrdom in war for an Islamic
cause is praised extensively as in the above Hadith. The
Quran teaches (3:169):
“Do not consider those killed [while engaging] in
God’s cause dead. Rather, they live with their Lord,
who sustains them!”
The Quranic idiom, “killed while engaging in God’s
cause” is a reference to martyrdom for acting on being
a Muslim, whether as a persecuted and powerless
individual or as a warrior fighting in defense of Islam,
country, justice, freedom and peace. A Hadith in Sunan
al-Tirmidhi states that in contrast to the suicide, the
martyr does not even feel the pain of his death (Fada’il
al-Jihad, 26:1663). He is also forgiven all his sins and
has the right to intercede on behalf of his own family to
enter Heaven. So, suicide is forbidden, killing of
noncombatants is forbidden, but martyrdom is
rewarded with entrance into heaven and, therefore,
with great material rewards in the world to come.
What I wrote about Islam’s position on suicide is not
secret, esoteric knowledge. It is common knowledge
well known and can easily be discerned by anyone
doing a very elementary study of the religion. Yet what
we have today is the knee jerk, unconscious association
of the religion of Islam with suicide bombings. Even to
the point where claims of getting 72 virgins are an
Islamic prize offered for suicide. This is a cruel and ugly
lie about Islam that has been so widely perpetuated
that it is accepted as fact. Corrections to the
association of Islam with suicide and the killing of
innocents are not made in the media. Instead it is
glued even tighter by reporting that NOT a person
disobeying Islam, but a Muslim imbued with Islamic
religious fervor committed a suicide.
We have a media that is too eager to enlighten and
spread the word about crazy Muslims killing themselves
for 72 virgins. We read and hear everyday about suicide
bombers in Iraq killing themselves and other Iraqis
with them. We are to believe that a religion that
strongly condemns suicide, promises severe
punishment in hell for those who commit it and has
never had a strategy of using suicide to fight wars until
recent contact with Israelis — somehow has spawned
the most suicide killers on earth. I don’t believe for a
minute that the reports about suicide killings in Iraq
are true. Many independent journalists and eye
witnesses have reported how Mossad and US
occupational forces have staged incidents to make
them appear to be Iraqi suicide killings. In fact there
are many cases where the perpetrators have been
caught.
Oddly enough in this saga about suicide killings we
read the following headlines from Israeli newspapers:
“Fewer officers to be armed as suicide becomes IDF’s
top killer!!!” which you can read more about at the
following links:

The leading cause of death for the Israeli Defense
Forces is suicide!!! Well, well it looks like suicide is really
an Israeli problem and not a Muslim one. Their IDF
commit far more suicides than what is being blamed on
Muslims. We already know that Israel leads the world
in trafficking prostitutes and that there are hundreds
of brothels in Tel Aviv. Israel has no law against
trafficking people, and no law against prostitution.
Who knows, maybe having access to one prostitute at a
time on a soldier’s salary was not enough for those IDF
soldiers. Maybe these soldiers believed the lies told
about Muslims and were trying to get their 72 virgins
too. See how strong an effect Jewish lies have on their
own people.

Goodluck Jonathan – Redefining Failure by Ogunyemi Bukola

“Goodluck, however, is neither clueless nor is he ineffective. He is a meticulous strategist and his execution is callous and brutal. Under the genial he-cant-hurt-a-fly façade is a burukutu guzzler, a Niger-Delta terrorist, a professional witch-hunter, a devilish opportunist, and a proficient thief. He has been using the proceeds from his colossal empire of corruption to fund terrorism within the nation, while using the terrorism to divide us along religious and ethnic paths and to divert our attentions from the corruption”

Those were my words in this column two weeks ago in an article titled: Like a Punch in The Face) and I’ll like to tender my unreserved apology to Mr. President for painting such a wrong picture of who he is. Wrong, not in the sense of being incorrect, but rather in the sense of being incomplete. Incomplete in the sense that I forgot to add that he is also a liar, a very good one, a divisive tactician and an evil genius. On Tuesday May 29th, instead of giving an honest account of his one year in office, Mr. President embarked on a campaign of lies and falsehood that would make even the devil clap in admiration, and to cover his tracks, he announced that the University of Lagos (UNILAG) would now be known and referred to as the Moshood Abiola University, Lagos (MAUL) in honour of late Chief MKO Abiola, an icon of democracy and winner of the annulled June 12 1993 Presidential election.

This undemocratic and diversionary announcement has expectedly generated a lot of controversies, and has ultimately distracted us from scrutinizing the falsehood that permeated that day’s broadcast and indeed critically assess the President’s achievements, or lack of, in the past one year. As a teacher however, giving my students a report of their academic performances at the end of every term/session is an essential part of my job, and one that I don’t joke with. As such, I refuse to be distracted by that new track on Jonathan’s National Distraction Album and choose to focus on his performance in office in the past one year. So Mr. President, here is your report card.

Goodluck Jonathan, you have failed, and spectacularly so. In the past one year, Nigeria has moved from being a peace-keeper to a peace-seeker, corruption has increased under your guidance, you have pushed several millions of Nigerians into the pit of poverty, and there’s no assurance they’ll ever get out under your administration. You have broken the previous records for incompetence and corruption and have set new ones. So monumental has your failure being that several new words have been introduced into Nigeria’s political lexicon just to qualify your lack of success at the things that really matter.

Ben Murray Bruce said the reason he wanted to become Bayelsa Governor was because the state is one of the richest and yet least developed states in the nation. As a former Deputy Governor and Governor of that state, one would have expected you to bury your head in shame at being called a failure in front of the whole world that day, but no, not you, you smiled and clapped instead. You are so used to being called a failure that it’s beginning to sound like a compliment to you.

How good would it have been for you make these announcements in your May 29 broadcast:

Rename the National Stadium Abuja after MKO Abiola and make June 12 a National Public Holiday and official National Democracy Day.
Announce a 10% increase in the funding of all Federal universities.
Announce a 50% May salary bonus for workers nationwide.
Announce a 50% cut in your salaries and allowances and those of the members of the Federal Executive Council and your numerous aides and advisers, with a plea to the Federal legislators to do the same.
Announce a N37/N27/N17 or even N7 reduction in the pump price of petroleum.
Announce the sack of Diezani Madueke and her #fuelsubsidyscam compatriots and hand them over to the EFCC (that would include you though).
Announce the immediate reinstatement of Justice Ayo Salami.
Declare your assets.

These are things you could have done on May 29 to atone for the failures of the past year, but it would be naïve of anyone to expect you to do such, wouldn’t it? The same naivety that pushed people to vote for you out of sympathy for your shoeless upbringing, the same naivety that made Christians vote for you thinking you’re humble and God-fearing, the same naivety that made the South-Easterners vote for you thinking you’d better their lots being from a region closer to them than the North (they even named you Azikiwe, what a travesty!). But no, we are no longer naïve, and we expected nothing better than the lies you cooked up on May 29th, to have done otherwise would have been a miracle of the order of turning stone to bread.

Nigerians are getting used to your style and none of the tactics you used in that past year will work again. So prepared are we for the gimmicks you’re prone to using to cover up your failures that we are already armed to receive whatever package you have to offer come October 1st when you’ll have to give a broadcast and an account of your stewardship again. Believe you me, nothing you say on that day or before will come as a surprise to Nigerians, except of course your resignation and apology for being a disappointment and a plague on us.

You have shown yourself to be a man with disdain for consultations. Consultations with civil society groups were not over before you went on to announce the fuel subsidy removal on January 1st, plunging the nation into unnecessary chaos and ultimately leading to the death of 20 young men. You also did not consult with the authorities and stakeholders of UNILAG before announcing a change of name for the institution. You didn’t even go through the due process of getting the University of Lagos Act of 1962 amended before going on TV to make an undemocratic announcement on Democracy Day!

Mr. President, before you come up with your conspiracy theories again, nobody hates you, we just dislike failure and its progenitors. The trick is that if you actually tidy up your house and attend to the business of governance in the coming year, if you curb your addiction for dipping those hands into the federation account and our foreign reserve without remorse, if you obey the rule of law and listen to the voice of the people, Nigerians are a very forgiving people, all your sins will be forgiven you, and maybe, just maybe, you won’t end up sharing a room with Ibori in his new estate.

At least MKO Abiola did enough in his lifetime, even without becoming President, to merit having an higher institution of international standard named after him and the observance of June 12 as Democracy Day/Public Holiday in his honour by at least the South-Western states, with the way you are going you’ll be lucky to have Otuoke Community Primary School named after you after we chase you out of office in 2015, OR BEFORE.

How Atiku made American University of Nigeria

His Excellency Atiku Abubakar, Your Royal Highness,
Bishop Kukah, Chairman Al-Haji Joda, President
Margee Ensign, distinguished guests.
The granting of honorary degrees to the Lamido, a
Bishop, and a Pastor assures that we are all blessed
today. I am deeply appreciative of the degree and
the award.
Is this not a remarkable cavern of a building? Very
few thought that the North of Nigeria could have a
building this large, and even fewer thought it could
be built in one year. They were wrong. They under-
estimated the American University of Nigeria. This is
a monument to determination, a legacy to the
Lamido, and a demonstrable statement that the
Graduates of the Class of 2012 have a special
destiny.
We are here to salute and celebrate your hard work
and achievement and inspire you to build on the
educational platform that you received here. You
have made it this far not just because of your talent
and hard work but because of your family and
friends, your professors, Administration, and the
staff, and especially to President Ensign, whose
energy, creativity, and infectious enthusiasm inspires
the campus and gives it a smile. You should also
thank Dr. Ensign’s two predecessors as President,
and Chairman Al-Haji Ahmed Joda and the Board of
Trustees, who have loyally given their time, advice,
and financial support to establish AUN. Graduates, if
you feel tall today, it is because you are standing on
the shoulders of so many.
But none of this would have been possible without
the vision and the astonishing generosity of His
Excellency Atiku Abubakar. No one in all of Africa
has given more than he has to promote education.
Mo Ibraham created a great Prize for freely-elected,
clean and competent African Presidents.
Regrettably, there is a short list for that prize. But
with the exception of Ibrahim, no other African
businessman has contributed a small fraction of what
Atiku has done for decades. His Excellency Atiku
Abubakar is unique among African leaders in
establishing a world-class private university.
Now let me tell a story.
Don’t get used to it
When I was in the Peace Corps, a palm-reader came
to my village, and he read the palm of one of my
young students. He said: “You will be poor and
powerless until you reach the age of 40.” My
student’s face turned pale, but he had the wit to
ask: “What happens after that?” And the palm-
reader said: “You’ll get used to it.”
That young student might have been Atiku. Born poor
in Adamawa State, the chances were that he would
die poor and powerless, but he refused to get used
to it. He walked barefoot for 20 kilometers to get a
good education. Some of his teachers were
American Peace Corps Volunteers, who stimulated in
Atiku, a curiosity, a spirit of inquiry, a determination
never to “get used to it.”
Atiku went into public service, then business, and
then electoral politics where he won the
Governorship and finally Vice President. None of
these steps were easy. He faced formidable at each
turn in the road, but he always persisted. He had a
dream of creating a great private university in Yola,
and he turned to American University in Washington
for advice because Jamilah Abubakar had just
received a PhD there. Louis Goodman, then Dean of
AU’s School of International Service, and a Board
member of AUN since its beginning, visited and
convinced me to come.
I had just been appointed Vice President of
International Affairs at AU, and President Benjamin
Ladner asked me to lead a team to Nigeria to
determine the feasibility of establishing such a
University. When I arrived here, the land was dry,
the heat was oppressive, and the poverty was
pervasive. It was hard for me to see how a
University could grow in this soil. I suggested a
different location. ”How about the French Riviera?”
He laughed. “”Or how about Abuja?”
Atiku had a different vision. He saw a University
that could lift Yola and Adamawa up like Stanford
University lifted Silicon Valley in California. He saw
a University that would attract the very smartest
students in Nigeria and Africa and give them an
education that was better than anything they could
get on the Continent.
He persuaded me and my team, and we convinced
American University. President Benjamin Ladner
strongly favored the partnership, and his successor,
Neil Kerwin, asked me to convey to all of you how
proud American University feels at the partnership
that developed and matured between AU and AUN.
Together, all of us worked 24/7 to build the
institution we see today, which has 1400 students
and 100 faculty and today graduates its fourth class.
— AUN is the first wireless university with a fiber-
optic connection.
— AUN has had uninterrupted education since its
doors opened. Its graduates have gone to some of
the best graduate schools in the world. American
University has hosted 49 AUN students, and they
have scored at the top of the class at AU, and some
are enrolled in AU’s graduate schools. —We stand
in a hall and on a campus that did not exist seven
years ago. Today, AUN is a beacon to all those
who believe that a vision, determination, and
perseverance can overcome a palm-reader’s
prediction. Stanford took a century to become
great. AUN went from conception to reality in four
years, and in another four, it became the best
private university in sub-Saharan Africa.
Last September, on the 50th Anniversary of the
Peace Corps, a new prize – the Senator Harris
Wofford Prize for Global Citizenship – was given to a
leader in the developing world who absorbed the
spirit of the Peace Corps through his work with
Volunteers and contributed to his country by his
support for education and democracy. The first
recipient of this award was H.E. Atiku Abubakar.
Permit me to show a video of the Gala Event when
the award was received by Adamu Abubakar, the
son of the Founder and a member of the Board.
Nigeria and Africa
Graduates, you have earned your degree, but this
only begins your journey. Your education has opened
a door to a more fulfilling life, but many other doors
await you.
“The mind,” Plutarch once wrote, “is not a vessel to
be filled, but a fire to be kindled.” At AUN, your
Professors have tried to light the fire of curiosity and
knowledge. It is now your responsibility to keep it
kindled – to not get used to inertia and not be
discouraged by failure.
- If you can’t find a job, try to create one for yourself
and, then, for others.
— If people dispute western education, tell them
that education is not eastern or western, it is
universal, and every person has the right to learn
about everything.
?- If people exclude other views or religions, remind
them that the greatest era of Islam, Christianity,
Judaism, and all other religions occurred when they
opened themselves to all ideas and religions. The
greatest scholars of all religions agree that the path
to heaven is through enlightenment and education,
not violence and coercion. True liberation is possible
only for those who open their minds to education
every hour of every day.
- If people say Nigeria is corrupt, and Africa is poor,
remind them that change has started. For the last
six years, Nigeria has sustained an annual economic
growth rate of about 7% – one of the highest in the
world. And change will keep coming because you
will be the agents of that change.
Woody Allen once told another graduating class:
“You are at a crossroads. One path leads to utter
hopelessness and despair. And the other path leads
to total extinction. I hope you will have the wisdom
to choose correctly.”
Your choices are much better because you have the
talent to fulfill Nigeria’s promise. Your generation has
a huge agenda.
— You have much to do to ensure that the entire
country benefits from its petroleum. Other countries
— from Norway to Brazil — have shown it can be
done. Nigeria can too.
— You have much to do to diversify the economy so
that agriculture, manufacturing, and innovation will
replace oil and gas as the source of sustainable
development. Other countries have shown it can be
done. In 1980, 80% of Mexico’s exports were oil.
Today, 80% of Mexico’s exports are manufactured
goods. Nigeria can also diversify.
?—You have much to do build power lines and
roads. China and Turkey has done that, and so can
Nigeria.
- You have much to do to unleash the
entrepreneurial energy of Nigeria.
It used to be said that Nigerian government officials
gave the state an honest day’s work. The problem
is that it took a week. The World Bank has estimated
that Nigeria ranks 133 of 192 nations in allowing its
entrepreneurs to set up a business. Filing permits
and forms could take a year. These rules too can
change. You can change them.
There are two kinds of people in the world. People
who think they can, and people who think they
can’t. They’re both right. AUN thinks you can, and
so do I.
John Gardner, one of America’s wisest men, who set
up a group called “Common Cause” to mobilize the
people of America to keep it true to its ideals,
looked at the American political landscape in the late
1960s and said: ”What we have before us are some
breathtaking opportunities, disguised as insoluble
problems.”
Atiku didn’t get used to the poverty of Nigeria’s past
or to a dry field in the middle of Yola. Others saw
an insoluble problem. He saw a breathtaking
opportunity.
I hope every graduate will try to replicate his story
and show his perseverance. His life was not always
charmed, but when he had a setback, he did not
allow himself to be depressed or discouraged.
He picked himself up and moved forward. Africa
needs a million people like Atiku.
“A mind that is stretched to a new idea never returns
to its original dimension.” So said Oliver Wendell
Homes, a great American Justice.
Graduates of 2012, and I include myself since I now
have a class ring and a diploma: Let’s resolve
together that you will go forth from here, the
American University of Nigeria, with a new idea.
You will be the agents of a modern, progressive, and
ethical Nigeria. When you see the flaws in this
country, and when you face setbacks in life – you
will say: ”I will never get used to it.” And you will
change it.
Thank you.

Foreign AffairsWhy Is England More Developed And Stable Than America? by 13volts(op): 9:04pm On May 26, 2012
We had a very long discussion on this issue in office today. England as a country is not known to have any mineral resources, I hardy see any manufactured product MADE IN ENGLAND despite the fact that they are our colonial master. The only major investment in Nigeria that is traced to England is BP.

My questions are;
1. Why do we have less poor people in England compared to America.
2. Without a huge manufacturing base like in America, China, Germany or Japan. How do the British manage to sustain a vibrant economy and at the same time avoid the recession ravaging Europe and America?
3. We have many blacks in England, they hardy made their presence known globally except in the EPL. Most noticeable black personalities in the world are from America, in music, movies, sport and what have you. Are the blacks in England marginalized or what? why are they not making waves as their counterparts in America?

Boko Haram: Gombe/jos/bauchi Division Commander An Igbo

Information available to 247ureports.com through a credible source within the leadership ranks of the dreaded terrorist Islamic group, Boko Haram indicate that the group may have gone into overdrive following the public utterance by the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Dr. Goodluck Ebelemi Jonathan that the Islamic group will be out of existence by the month of June 2012. The statement which came while Mr. President visited South Korea in April 2012, has led to the Islamic group to spread its support tentacles across the African continent in a manner that has not been witnessed before.

The members of the Islamic group who responded to the President in the negative took the President’s public announcement as clear challenge to the group’s resilience and seriousness. The field commanders of the Islamic group mounted a ‘face-saving’ insurgence that resulted to the failed assassination attempt on the Inspector General of Police [IGP], Abubakar, killing of Bayero University Kano Church goers, slaughter at the Potiskum Cattle Market and other like attacks. The Joint Task Force [JTF], on their part, in an attempt to suppress the mounting insurgency uncovered identities of the leadership ranks in Kano to include a Yoruba man and a Cameroonian woman.

It is on this strength that the source within Boko Haram revealed that the leadership of the Islamic group to comprise of persons from diversified tribal groups of Nigeria and of Chad Republic. In particular, he pointed to the field commander/leader of the Gombe/Jos/Bauchi regiment/division to be of Igbo parentage [Anambra State]. According to the source, the Igbo man is aged in his early 30s – was born and raised in Borno State – and had been indoctrinated into the Islamic way of life – long before the recent insurgence of the Boko Haram. He added that the Gombe/Jos/Bauchi division to be the most active and battle ready among the divisions presently on ground in Nigeria. “The Kanuri people and the comrades from Chad are the same. Their language and customs are similar. We have lots of them in our regimen” said the source.

Concerning recent publication that the Boko Haram has received financial help from a North African country, Algeria, the high ranking source, added that Boko Haram has been receiving financial and other-like resources from international communities that stretch to Libya, Mauritania, Somalia, Iran, Pakistan and other country where their parent organization [the Al Qeada] has significant sympathizers. In particular, it was revealed that the deposed leader of Mauritania, former President Sidi Mohamed Sheik Abdullahi has been a “close” financial friend of the Islamic group who had made available millions of dollars to the group to facilitate for training at the Al Shabaab training camps in Southern Mogadishu, Somalia – and to carry out operations in Nigeria. “We now have enough resources and trained men to see us through June” stated the Boko Haram source.

Adding that the former President of Mauritania, Sidi Mohamed Sheik Abdullahi provided additional logistical assistance to the group for the training of snipers – estimated to be 341 in number – of which 119 have allegedly arrived northern Nigeria, he exclaimed that the remainders “are on their way” to enable the shift in tactics. [Sidi Mohamed Sheik Abdullahi is said to be residing in Algeria and France.]

The Boko Haram source recalled that the Nigerian military’s assistance to the United States forces in Southern Mogadishu in a coordinated attack against the commanders and men of Al Shabaab near the Sahafi Hotel – where Al Shabaab snipers were staged. He lamented that Nigeria sent forces to the African Union Mission in Somalia [AMISOM] to kill their men and comrades.

Also, a wealthy merchant from Chad [name not given] is revealed to aid the leadership of Boko Haram in weapon acquisition and transport into Africa and into northern Nigeria. The Chadian is said to have been assisting the group – based more on an economic interest than religious. “He is a very wealthy man with unlimited access to weapons.” 247ureports.com understands the Chadian’s objective is primarily to aid the Boko Haram achieve “confusion in Nigeria” – and to subsequently reap the economic benefits that may result. The Chadian merchant is resident in the central region of Chad.
