PoliticsIgbo Were Still Feeling The Pains Of The Civil War, Which Lasted For About Three by 14Ebiscoo(op): 8:31pm On Jun 11, 2018
Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra, MASSOB, has said that the Igbo were still feeling the pains of the civil war, which lasted for about three years.

MASSOB stated that it was wrong for President Muhammadu Buhari to say that the Nigerian troops were soft on Biafrans, claiming that five million people of Igbo extraction were killed during the civil war (1967-1970).

The National Director of Information of MASSOB, Mr Sunday Okereafor, in a statement on Sunday, explained that while many Igbo people, including children, were killed, the entire Biafran people were subjected to hunger.

Okereafor recalled how Frederick Forsyth, a British pilot, who later became a journalist, captured what happened during the war and maintained that the federal troops were brutal against the Biafrans during the civil war.

Describing the civil war as genocide against the Igbo, Okereafor stated that the genocide in Rwanda was child’s play compared to the massacre during the Biafran war.

“We are still feeling the pains of the civil war. I lost my sister; Precious. Properties were also left as abandoned properties. Yakubu Gowon, who was the Head of State then, was not soft on Biafrans.

“He (Gowon) once said that he had no regret over the civil war. Over five million Igbo were killed by the Nigerian troops. We faced hunger and kwashiorkor. Children and civilians were attacked.

“It is surprising that Gowon is now telling the Igbo that they should forgive and forget about the past. During the war, two million children were killed; the attacks were in the markets. It is not true that the federal troops were soft on us. The Rwandan genocide is a child’s play to Biafran genocide.

“Frederick Forsyth, a former pilot, who later became a journalist, captured what happened during the war. How could they say that the troops were soft on us? The pains are there and we can never forget the pains,” Okereafor said.

CelebritiesUgandan Housemaid Who Stabbed Her Madam And Son To Death, Arrested (photo) by 14Ebiscoo(op): 11:47am On Jun 11, 2018
A manhunt which was launched by Ugandan and Kenyan authorities has paid off, as Jacky Ama, the housemaid who stabbed her madam and son to death has been arrested.

The housemaid who was was arrested at Namayisi in Uganda today on Sunday, June 10, following a successful manhunt by Kenyan and Ugandan authorities at Port Victoria border in Busia County. She is expected to be brought to Kenya to face murder charges.
Auma who is believed to have strangled her employer Elizabeth Achieng and a three-year-old son Leon Benedict Otieno before knifing them several times, will be under the custody of Muhoroni police once he lands in Kenya since she committed the crime in their area of operation as reported by Standard.

Recall that we reported that Ms Liz Ojwang and her son Leone were stabbed on Wednesday evening, in what is believed to be a child related dispute. Ms Ojwang was stabbed in Muhoroni, Kenya, where she lived and worked.

The suspect’s arrest came after Elizabeth’s husband, Evans Otieno who stays in Kisumu got impatient when she failed to show up at work and failed to return his calls. When Otieno went back home in the evening, he found the two bodies lying in a pool of blood in the bedroom, the deceased mother’s tied around the neck. According to the neighbour Martin Ayako, the murder suspect was comfortably seated and crunching chips on the table as if nothing had happened.

“I asked whereabouts of Elizabeth but she told Elizabeth had left with the child but she was just comfortably seated some eating some chips,” Ayako narrated.

The 26-year-old community health worker had resumed work from maternity leave two weeks before meeting her death. The bodies of the two were collected by police officers and are preserved at Star Mortuary in Kisumu pending a postmortem examination

Politics2019: Why Nigerian May Cease To Exist – Junaid Muhammed by 14Ebiscoo(op): 11:29am On Jun 10, 2018
Junaid Muhammed, Second Republic lawmaker, has warned President Muhammadu Buhari against rigging the 2019 Presidential election.

Muhammed, a Northerner and fierce critic of the Buhari’s government warned that rigging the 2019 election will lead to violence.

Speaking with The Sun, the former lawmaker maintained that failure to ensure free and fair election in 2019, “There may not be Nigeria again.”

Muhammadu said, “If they want to rig the election and, of course, they have the wherewithal, the means of violence, the armed forces, the police, the para-military and they want to rig the election, I want to assure you if they rig this election there may not be Nigeria again.”

Commenting on claims of Cabals in the current government, Muhammed said, “Yes, it is one of the main problems because there is no person who can govern by himself alone. So, yes if you blame a man you must also blame his coterie of advisers or mis-advisers around him, most of whom are ignorant, most of whom are not there on merit either as politicians, technocrats or professionals.

“They don’t know what they are talking about. So, my experience is that one, to Buhari what matters most is that people he put in certain positions must be his relations, his in-laws, blood relations and also most importantly be members of his inner circle.

“So, this idea of nepotism; this idea of prebendalism; this idea of giving a man an appointment only because you know him and he is your friend is something I find terribly objectionable. This is the worst government in the history of Nigeria that I know of since 1914 to date.”

CelebritiesA Married Man Once Asked To Check My Butt On A Plane – Wumi Toriola by 14Ebiscoo(op): 6:07am On Jun 10, 2018
I grew up in a disciplined home. My father was a very tough man and I lost my mum when I was very young. I actually grew up with my grandmother. As a child, I wanted to become a lawyer and tried to pursue it. I went to the Lagos State University, Ojo, where I obtained a diploma in Law.

Education

For my elementary education, I attended Providence Primary School. I went to Providence Secondary School for my post-elementary education. Both schools are on Iju Road, Fagba, Lagos State. I studied Linguistics at the University of Ilorin.

Career

I got into the industry through an audition for a movie titled, Ise se Lagba, put together by Funke Akindele-Bello and produced by Taiwo Ajisefinni. I was selected to partake in it and that was how my acting career began. Over the years, I have acted in over 200 movies. The newest are Sugbon Kan and Wedding Ring; they’re doing well in the market right now. There is no role I would love to play that I have yet to. However, I would love to work on bigger projects.

Parents’ reaction

My father didn’t support my acting career. However, along the line, he saw the interest and passion I had for my career and he had to support me.

Challenges

One of the biggest challenges we face in the movie industry is piracy. As a young movie producer, piracy is really giving me a tough time. It was also difficult breaking into the movie industry. The biggest sacrifice I have made in my career is featuring in movies without being paid. I used to do a lot of that in the early days. It is also tough remaining calm in the face of cyber bullying. Sometimes, I really want to respond but I just have to let go. It took a whole lot to get to where I am today.

Lessons

I have learnt not to listen to side talks. You also have to be consistent in whatever you do because people are noticing. I have fans that have been following me from the days when I only played one scene in movies till now. People pay attention to details but you may not know.

Breakthrough

My breakthrough came in 2015 when I produced the movie, Ajewunmi. The movie industry has also helped me in a lot of ways. Before I started acting, I was not a fashionable person but that has changed. The ability to play my roles well has also helped me a lot. I bury myself in whatever character I’m playing and that has helped me a lot.

Production

Already, I have produced about seven movies including Eto, Obinrin, Ajewunmi, My Past, Ayo Ife, Sugbon Kan, Omo Better. I am presently working on Iyawo Alaseju.

Production is not really my thing and that is why I adopt division of labour on my projects. I usually delegate responsibilities to people who are competent to handle them. Most times, I don’t even handle the finances; I let someone else do that. I do all these so that I can concentrate on my acting. It takes a lot for you to be a producer and actor on the same set.

Fame

Fame has robbed me of my freedom. Sometimes, I cannot decide to just do whatever I want.

Personality

I believe that I am fun to be with. I am not what I portray on screen. I have a calm personality and I am very private.

Other interests

Apart from acting, I’m involved in skincare and I have a business called WT Glow.

Role models

Everybody that has done great things in their industry are my role models. I particularly like Joke Silva.

Marriage

I don’t want to talk about my man. However, I have no fears that marriage would reduce my fan base. As a matter of fact, I have never really had many male fans. Most of my fans are females; so, I don’t have too many problems.

Fans

One of the funniest experiences I have had with fans is when a man left his wife on a plane and came to my seat. He asked me to stand up, that he wanted to check if my butt was real. I didn’t find it funny initially but I later laughed over it. I used to be embarrassed by my backside but now, I consider it my trademark.

Hobbies

I love to shop, read, travel and watch movies. Whenever I want to relax, I like to be indoors.

Fashion

My style can be defined as simple and classy. I don’t follow trends.

CelebritiesI Once Used Sandpaper To Get Rid Of My Tribal Marks – Actor Afeez Owo by 14Ebiscoo(op): 9:52pm On Jun 09, 2018
One noticeable feature of popular Nollywood actor, Afeez Abiodun popularly known as Afeez Owo are the tribal marks on his face. While some might argue that he would have been more handsome without them, the actor begs to differ as he told Saturday Beats that he had to face reality and accept what his parents created on his face.

He opened up that initially as a young boy, he disliked the marks and went to the extent of using sandpaper to get rid of them all to no avail simply because he was always taunted by bus conductors.

Owo added that he would never allow anyone inflict such scars on the face of his children.

“I am very comfortable with my tribal marks now and if anything ever wipes them off my face, I would feel bare or naked and my fans would not recognise me. While I was growing up in Surulere, there were a lot of times I was teased by people because of my tribal marks. They abused me so much but I did not care; today my tribal mark is my trademark. There was a time people teased me so much that I attempted to use sandpaper to wipe them off especially when bus conductors insulted me about it. They always picked on me and called me various names but I thank God for who I am today. I am also glad I did not get rid of the tribal marks. There is no insult anyone can dish out to me over my tribal marks that would hurt my feelings. Although I like my tribal marks, I can never allow anyone to give my children tribal marks,” he said.

The thespian went down memory lane with Saturday Beats as he spoke about how his parents did not support his career and he had to sponsor his education when he was in primary school.

“When I started my acting career, it was rough and tough. The first challenge I faced was from my parents who felt I did not know what I was doing with my life. I lived with them in Oyo State and they felt that I ought to go to school to study. They weren’t pleased with me, so they backed off and I had to finance my education from Primary 5 till I got to Form 5. When I got to Lagos, I had to fend for myself as well. I got a little place on Randle Avenue, Surulere and whenever I was going for rehearsals, I trekked from my house in Surulere to Saka Tinubu, Victoria Island. I never knew that I would become someone in life. I just went with hope and I had it in mind that if I passed out while trekking either to the venue or back home, then so be it. I got a breakthrough in 1998 and two years later, I produced my first movie,” Afeez Owo said.

CrimeNigerian Army: Fake Soldier Nabbed In Lagos by 14Ebiscoo(op): 5:27pm On Jun 07, 2018
A panel beater, Victor Nyaku, was on Thursday arraigned before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos, for impersonation and assault.

Nyaku, 47, is also accused of parading himself as an Army officer, wearing Army camouflaged uniform and unlawfully possessing a Nigerian Police identity card.

The Police Prosecutor, Sgt. Godwin Awase, told the court that the accused committed the offences on April 14 at Anifowoshe, Ikeja, Lagos.

He said that the accused, despite not serving in the military, dressed in an army uniform and paraded himself to be an army officer.

“The accused was driving his Toyota Camry and he blocked a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) ordering the driver to reverse for him to pass.

“When the driver of the bus could not reverse for him because the bus is long, the accused came down from his car with a Koboko (a long flexible whip made of cow skin or horse tail) and started beating the driver.

“Unfortunately for him, the Police got to the scene and in the process of settling the dispute, demanded for the accused identity card.

“The accused, who was in army camouflage presented a police sergeant ID card carrying another person’s name.”

Awase said that when it was discovered that the accused was fake, he confessed.

“He said that he saw the camouflage in a bale of clothes he bought from Cotonou and that the ID card was given to him by someone in Ikeja. He was later taken to the station,” the prosecutor said.

The offences contravened Sections 171, 380 and 382 of the revised Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

Nyaku, who resides at Abule-Egba, Lagos, however, pleaded not guilty and was admitted to a bail of N100, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

The Magistrate, Mrs F.F George, ordered that the sureties should be gainfully employed and show evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

The case was adjourned until June 16, for mention.

PoliticsNew Minimum Wage: September Deadline Possible – NLC Insists by 14Ebiscoo(op): 7:03am On Jun 07, 2018
The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, President, Comrade Ayuba Wabba has said if all members of the tripod are committed to doing what is right and working within the timeline already set, the new minimum wage can be achieved in September.

He stated this on Wednesday while addressing newsmen after addressing the plenary at the ongoing 107th session of the International Labour Conference, ILO.

The Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige, had said that the new minimum wage may not materialise in September.

Wabba said “Clearly speaking, if we are to go by the timeline which the tripartite committee represented by government, employers and workers are able to work assiduously towards it, it is something that is deliverable and can be achieved. So, we are still keeping faith with the process.”

“We made that very clear from the beginning after the inauguration of the committee because the first thing they did was to look at the scope of the work and the time it will take for us to deliver, to complete the tripartite negotiation and make sure that we are able to deliver a comprehensive report.

“Given the process of give and take, with the commitment we have also received from the National Assembly, I don’t think that the centrality of the issue require any delay. So as Organised Labour, we are committed to the timeline that the committee has set for itself. The timeline is August/September and we have said that very clearly.

“At the tripartite committee, once it is agreed, we also know the process. It not about your willingness to pay, but the desirability and the fact that workers deserve decent wages.

“Once there is the will and the negotiations are concluded and a figured agreed by the tripartite, the entire process involved in making it a law can be concluded within a very short period. The one that we did in 2011 did not take up to one month for the entire process to be completed.

“We have also received firm commitment from the leadership of the National Assembly that once a law that is agreeable is transmitted to them, they will be able to facilitate the process. So, if there is the good will, all these processes can be concluded in good time and workers will then be able to benefit from it.

“But if there is no good will, then the issue of delay and all manner of excuses can be given. But our faith is that we are committed to the process and workers are waiting very anxiously to benefit because it is also long overdue. At the last negotiation, we all agreed to the five year timeline. This is the context of what we are considering”.

PoliticsWhat Defence Minister Told Buhari At Security Council Meeting by 14Ebiscoo(op): 12:18am On Jun 06, 2018
Minister of Defence, Mansur Dan-Ali was at the presidential villa on Tuesday to brief President Muhammad Buhari on state of security in Nigeria.

He spoke at the Security Council meeting, which was attended by the nation’s Service Chiefs.

Thanking the president for his relentless and continuous support to the Nigerian Armed Forces in the conduct of its operations, he drew the attention of the council to the incessant killings and kidnappings by armed bandits and criminal activities across the North-West.

He mentioned Abuja-Kaduna expressway as a source of concern, saying there were still recorded incidences of kidnappings within the period under review.

Colonel Tukur Gusau, his spokesman, in a statement, said Dan-Ali also stated that the upsurge in incidents of security concern in Zamfara State is quite disturbing and called for more robust approach to tackling the threat.

“The situation is characterized with killings and kidnappings by armed bandits and criminal elements predominantly in Anka, Maru, Kaura Namoda and Talata Mafara LGAs of the State”, he noted.

“In the North-Central, the incidents of herdsmen-farmers clashes in Benue and Taraba states has reduced considerably. Several arrests have been made in connection with the killings and destruction of properties by own troops in conjunction with other security agencies.

“While in the North-East, the Boko Haram Terrorists activities have been contained as there is significant improvement in security situation in the Zone. The Nigerian Army has launched Operation LAST HOLD to flush out the insurgents from their hideouts in the Lake Chad Basin and free the communities to enable IDPs to return to their homes. The operation is to last till end of August 2018.

“Similarly, the MNJTF is currently engaged in Operation to dislodge Boko Haram Terrorists in the fringes between Niger Republic and Nigeria. The Task Force has so far dislodged the insurgents from Arege, Kangarwa, Metele and few other islands on the Lake Chad. So far, 296 persons have been rescued and are undergoing profiling. The number is envisaged to increase as troops intensify clearance operations.

“In the South-South/South-West, the situation of illegal oil bunkering, militancy and pipeline vandalism is on a decline in the Niger Delta following the effort of the Federal Government to engage stakeholders in dialogue. Similarly, Operation AWATSE has continued to dislodge militants and pipeline vandals from Arepo and other areas in Lagos and Ogun waterside.

“The Council was also informed by the Honourable Minister that the United States of America conveyed to the Government of Nigeria information about the implementation of Countering America’s Adversaries through Sanctions Act Section 231. It is pertinent to state that the award of contract for the procurement of the Mi-35M helicopters was completed before the Act was signed into Law in August 2017.

“In conclusion, the Honourable Minister suggested to the Council the need for Defence Headquarters to launch a Joint Task Force Operation similar to Operation SAFE HAVEN in Jos to cover Zamfara and Birnin Gwari axis of Kaduna State with its headquarters in Gusau, Zamfara State. The need to employ other channels with the affected states to reduce tension by suspending the implementation of the Anti-Open Grazing Law while also negotiating safe routes for the herders.

“The urgent need for the Nigeria Police and Department of State Services to prosecute all the suspects arrested in the states. The need to hasten the establishment of a National Commission on the Control of Small Arms and Light Weapons in Nigeria. The need to engage diplomatic channels to ensure US sanctions does not affect Nigeria.”

PoliticsWhy Okorocha Is Free To Leave APC - Osita Okechukwu, VON DG by 14Ebiscoo(op): 12:40am On Jun 05, 2018
The Director-General of the Voice of Nigeria, Mr Osita Okechukwu, has said the Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha, is free to have the All Progressives Congress.

Okechukwu said this while responding to questions from newsmen at the National Secretariat of the APC, in Abuja, on Monday.

However, one of the conveners of the APC Restoration Coalition in Imo State, Dr. Toe Ekechi, said the VON DG was merely expressing a personal opinion.

Ekechi noted that Okorocha, for now, remained the governor of Imo State and that his support and contribution would be welcome should he decide to continue to support the APC.

Earlier, Okechukwu said the APC was now better positioned to make a greater impact on the South-East with or without the governor.

He expressed confidence that the APC would consolidate on its power come 2019 by winning seats at the executive and legislative levels in state and at the federal levels.

Okechukwu said, “At least, there are more than 60 political parties now, Okorocha is free to join any of his choice. Though we are not forcing him to leave, what we are saying is we have taken the leadership out of his hands because he was playing God.

“He was personalising power, so the majority of the leadership and membership of the APC in the South-East said, ‘thank you, so far so good enough is enough.’

“So, what I am just saying is that he was at liberty to leave the APC but let nobody anywhere think that the APC will lose because we have retrieved the party from him. No, the APC is the winner as a political party.

“Mr President is going to get more votes; we are going to win more parliamentary seats, more governorship seats without him.

“In my place, there is a saying that when a bird is dancing on the main road it means there is a drummer in the bush and I am pointing at the drummer of all that is happening in the South-East. But luckily, the majority, over 90 per cent of the leadership and membership of the APC in the South-East has said enough is enough to our former leader, Owelle Rochas Okorocha.”

SportsNigerian Govt Finally Speaks On Super Eagles 2 – 1 Loss To England by 14Ebiscoo(op): 7:58am On Jun 04, 2018
The Minister of Youth and Sports, Barrister Solomon Dalung has hailed the Super Eagles despite their 1-2 loss to Three Lions of England in a pre-World Cup friendly game played at the Wembley Stadium on Saturday.

In a statement on Sunday, Dalung said he was impressed with the performance of the team though there was room for improvement.

“I am pleased with the team’s build- up to the World Cup. I am really satisfied with their performance though their take-off against England wasn’t quite encouraging but the ‘Nigerian’ in them was brought to the fore in the second half and they unfolded what they have in the kitty for Russia.

“I think it was an issue of trying to put their house in order before the World Cup. This friendly also had in attendance football supporters from all over the United Kingdom, Nigeria and elsewhere and it afforded them the opportunity of having a World Cup environment. All these are experiences that they will take to Russia,” he said.

The Minister also reassured the Super Eagles of government’s support before and during the World Cup.

“On the part of the federal government, we have done the needy because the President has been able to discharge his obligations which he committed to the players and that is that the federal government will give every support needed to the team right from qualification period to the World Cup proper.

“We don’t have any problem of funding and we have no problem at all which was common in the past to this caliber of preparation. This is the first time that the players are going to the World Cup without issues. Everything that needs to be done has been done. The players are moving into camp to re-strategize and we are confident that the players will represent the country very well in Russia,” Dalung assured.

Politics2019: APC Faces Difficult Time Ahead – Oyegun by 14Ebiscoo(op): 12:02pm On Jun 03, 2018
The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC, John Oyegun, has noted that the party will experience difficult time ahead.

Oyegun said when he received newsmen at his home during the weekend.

Recall that the APC Chairman had on Friday announced his decision not to continue in the race for reelection.

He said, “I believe that the party (APC) faces difficult days ahead, and all critical stakeholders in its leadership would be required to bind together for a common purpose.

The politician called for a less- contentious convention, adding that it would be better for the party.

“I do not intend to be part of the problems for APC to solve.

“However, I will continue to perform my functions as the national chairman of the party till my tenure officially ends on Monday , June 25 , when a new set of party executive will be inaugurated.”

PoliticsEkiti Shooting: Illegal Duty Policeman, Accomplice Politician Arrested by 14Ebiscoo(op): 7:05pm On Jun 02, 2018
Ekiti police command has said the anti-riot policeman involved in the shooting at the gathering of bigwigs of All Progressives Congress (APC) on Friday was on illegal duty.

The policeman (name withheld) has been arrested along the politician who hired him from Lagos.

Mr. Caleb Chukwuemeka, who released a preliminary report on the incident, said on Saturday that the mobile policemen was attached to 20 PMF, Ikeja, Lagos State where he was posted in bank guard duties somewhere in Ikeja.

“The policeman came on illegal duty to Ekiti State

”A politician, who conspired and removed the said policeman from where he was posted by his Squadron Commander and came to Ado-Ekiti with him for an unofficial reasons has also been arrested.

“The police said findings had revealed that what happened was a case of accidental discharge on the part of a mobile police officer,’’ he said.

He confirmed: “On Friday, 1st June, 2018 at about 1700 hours, the policeman accidentally shot Opeyemi Bamidele and one other, but he has been arrested.’’

” The victims of his accidental discharge are currently responding to treatment at the hospital, while the injured policeman is equally responding to treatment in the protective custody”, the PPRO said.

Meanwhile, the party has suspended its governorship campaigns scheduled to begin on Monday because of the incident.

The shooting took place during a grand reception organized to welcome the party’s gubernatorial candidate, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, from Abuja at the party’s State secretariat in Ado Ekiti.

Fayemi was a former governor of Ekiti and until his nomination as candidate, the minister of steel and solid minerals.

The Chairman of the party, Chief Jide Awe, confirmed the postponement of the campaign.

According to him, the suspension will continue until the police can guarantee the safety and security of the candidate and other members of the party.

The party insisted that Friday’s shooting was an attempt to take the life of Dr. Kayode Fayemi , but narrowly missed the bullets which later hit a former member of House of Representatives and one of the APC senatorial aspirants, Mr. Opeyemi Bamidele.

The party also demanded thorough investigation of the matter by the police while outcome of the reports must be made public.

It also maintained its earlier stand that the state government was its major suspect.

The state government has however dismissed as “baseless and unfounded”, the claim by the APC that it had a hand in the incident.

Mr. Lere Olayinka, the Special Assistant on Public Communication and New Media to the governor, described what happened at the APC secretariat as “self-induced”.

He said that dragging the state government into it was a cheap ploy to shift blame and dent the image of government.

PoliticsJOHESU Agrees To Suspend 44-day Old Strike Today by 14Ebiscoo(op): 9:04am On Jun 01, 2018
Conscious of the plight of health-seeking public and also in an attempt to give room for an amicable resolution of its dispute with the Federal Government, the Joint Health Sector Unions (JOHESU) on Wednesday agreed to suspend its 44 days old strike on Friday June 1, 2018.

The decision was reached after the intervention of the National Industrial Court, NIC, which offered to take over the mediation process between the striking health workers and the government.

Before now, an NGO, the Incorporated Trustees of the Kingdom Human Rights Foundation, KHRFI, had obtained a court order against JOHESU; mandating the health workers to suspend their industrial action on the 21st of May, 2018.

But, in pursuit of its constitutional rights to either comply or challenge the Court order, JOHESU filed an appeal at the Appellate Court.

Meanwhile, the leadership of JOHESU said it has decided to sheath its sword and direct the members of the union to resume duties since the NIC, as a neutral and impartial organ of the Judiciary, has mandated its mediation centre to take over the negotiation and reconciliation processes within the next 24 hrs in the interest of the public.

Speaking with newsmen, JOHESU Vice-President, Dr. Chimele Ogbonna, said:

“As responsible citizens of Nigeria, we have decided to honour the National Industrial Court, NIC, by submitting ourselves to its mediation centre, which must commence immediately. We would also call off the strike on the the first day of June.

“In the interest of Nigerians, we are sheathing our swords. We are a law-abiding union, and we shall give the law an opportunity to take its course for equity, fairness and justice to all parties.”

PoliticsBiafra: How Freedom Fighters Resisted Buhari’s Tyranny – Fani-kayode by 14Ebiscoo(op): 9:39pm On May 30, 2018
Former Minsiter of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode has revealed how President Muhammadu Buhari was humbled by the Biafra separatist groups with their sit-at-home-order.

Fani-Kayode said the success of today’s outing was a clear indication that Buhari has lost his respect in the eyes of the word.

He wrote on his Facebook post thus, “IPOB’s “stay at home” order has brought the east to a standstill. These brave young freedom fighters who have continued to resist the tyranny of Muhammadu Buhari by peaceful means have won the respect of the world. They are martyrs and heroes. God bless my friend and brother Nnamdi Kanu!”

Meanwhile, members of the Biafra Zionists Federation, BZF, Wednesday morning made a futile attempt to take over Enugu Government House.

Politics2019: Vote Anybody You Want, Buhari Tells Nigerians by 14Ebiscoo(op): 7:24am On May 30, 2018
Ahead of the 2019 general elections, President Muhammadu Buhari has asked Nigerians to get their Permanent Voters Card and vote anybody they want.

He spoke at the Presidential Villa in Abuja last night while breaking Ramadan fast with members of the judiciary led by a Justice of the Supreme Court, Justice Okukayode Ariwoola.

Buhari, who said technology aided his victory in 2015, was responding to a remark by a former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Alfa Belgore.

The president said he kept appealing to state governors to embark on voter education so that citizens could regard their PVCs as their national card.

“I find it necessary to invite you because I don’t normally see you. I’ve to repeat what I said having heard what you said. I mentioned that when I was in the military and much younger, we believed things were going wrong and so when I came, I took from the president downwards, to Kirikiri against your advice and told them that they are guilty until they prove themselves innocent. But we proceeded to have various tribunals to investigate and I can still remember extremely good and fantastic Nigerians, they’re few in the society that is why we don’t see the impact of fantastic people we have.

“I decided to put agbada and come back, I tried three times and then fourth time I eventually made it. Thanks to God and thanks to technology because permanent voters card and card readers are fantastic. Those who went to their polling booths in their constituency and voted, their votes counted.

“Before, votes were disregarded and results written and there was nothing you can do before the justices to proof your case. But now with technology it has been made easy. That is why I keep appealing to the governors to embark on voter education, to please tell the people that their voter card is their national card so to speak.

“Let them vote for anybody they want across ethnicity and religion and impose their decisions on them. I think that is why I am calling on and I am begging the governors to please continue with voter education so that people will take their permanent voters card seriously and make sure that they don’t lose it.

“I am bothering you with this because you are in a position of influence and you come from a constituency that is recognized and what you say will mean a lot to the people at your constituency,” Buhari said.

Belgore had affirmed that Buhari loved the country very much. The former CJN said President Buhari only needed good people around him.

He said: “I have always respected the president as a person. He loves this country very much. Because of that, what he needs always is to have very good people around him.”

PoliticsBuhari, APC Celebrating Last Democracy Day – PDP Chairman, Secondus by 14Ebiscoo(op): 3:29pm On May 29, 2018
National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Prince Uche Secondus has predicted that President Muhammadu Buhari and the APC are celebrating their last Democracy Day.

He said that never gain would a “non-democrat” be given access to power.

The PDP leader through a statement by his media aide, Ike Abonyi, noted that Nigerians are anxiously looking forward to the opportunity to dispense with the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, and the President.

The PDP boss said he was sympathizing with Nigerians for finding themselves in such horrible situation where a day they should be celebrating freedom and good governance, they are instead burying their innocent ones and groaning in the avoidable hardship.

He charged Nigerians to take their destiny and swear never to pass the APC root again by collecting and properly using their PVCs to save democracy and indeed save Nigeria.

His words: “If Democracy must survive in our country we must do away with APC and Nigerians are ready and willing to do just that because they cherish democracy as the best form of government.

“Going by their poor record of performance in the last 36 months, and the determination of Nigerians to put the country in the right footing, this is the last Democracy Day this President will mark.

“Their agenda now is to intimidate, harass and scare opponents to create a Police state with the aim of turning the country into one party state but it must be resisted by Nigerians who passed similar road before and came out victorious.

‘’The next Democracy Day May, 29, 2019 which Nigerians and indeed all lovers of democracy are anxiously looking forward to would be the smooth transition from confusion and purposeless governance to real democracy which the PDP is returning to gift to the Nation”

Secondus called on the international community to show more than passing interest in the events leading to Nigeria’s general election in 2019 as the APC rigging strategy has already started through intimidation and harassment of political opponents across the country.

Politics$16bn Power Project: Why Buhari Should Probe Obasanjo – Ikponmwen by 14Ebiscoo(op): 8:24am On May 29, 2018
Elder statesman and former Provost Marshal of the Nigerian Army, Brig-Gen. Idada Ikponmwen (retd), yesterday, said that the sins of former President Olusegun Obasanjo are too many.

He called on President Muhammadu Buhari to forget the fact that he comes from the same military background as Obasanjo and set up a panel of inquiry to investigate the budget meant for power under the administration of Obasanjo.

Buhari had last week hinted on probing Obasanjo over the failed $16 billion power project.

Obasanjo, while reacting said that he was ready for probe over the power project.

Ikponmwen, who also is the Edo State chairman of Pan Niger Delta Forum, PANDEF, told newsmen on Monday that: “I find the accusations and counter accusations very interesting and I believe that a government in power has a duty to investigate anything that comes to public glare especially with reference to this issue of money committed to power.

“I believe that beyond allegations and counter accusation, the Buhari government should set up a proper investigation, a judicial panel or a special investigative team to investigate what happened to the budget for power.

“If so much money had been budgeted for power and the country is still suffering the problem of power, it behoves on the government to conduct an investigation so that Nigerians will know the truth about what happened.”

PoliticsNorthern, Southern Elders’ Forums Meet Over State Of The Nation, Rreveal Decisio by 14Ebiscoo(op): 7:59am On May 28, 2018
The Northern and Southern Elders’ Forum have met in Abuja and expressed shock over what they described as the worsening state of affairs in the country.

The groups also revealed their plan to come together to form what would be called Nigerian Elders’ Forum.

Spokesperson of the Southern Elders Forum, Prof. Banji Akintoye briefed newsmen after a three-and-half hour closed-door meeting at the weekend in Abuja.

Akintoye said that the elders were worried “that things are not well with our country.”

The Forum further lamented that the quality of leadership has fallen so drastically, adding that the country has descended to a level where people now kill one another.

Those in attendance at the meeting include: Prof. Akintoye, Dr. Yime Sen, Yinka Odumakin, Dr. Afred Mulade, Sen. Kofo Bucknor-Akerele, Sen. Chris Anyanwu, Francis Doukpola, Dr. Chike Dike, Engr. Bello Suleiman, Sen. Ibrahim Y. Lame and Amba. Bala Sani.

Others include: Sam Nda-Isaiah, Sheik Idris Hayatudeen, Sen. Saidu M. Dansadau, Alhaji Falalu Bello, Dr. Doyin Okupe, Yerima Shettima, Dr. Charles Nwekeaku, G. G Darah, Barr. Abdullahi Usman Toro, Prof. Rahila P. Gowon and Abdulrazaq Adamu among others.

Akintoye said, “We are elders, we are not active politicians. Most of us are not active politicians. We have come together because we are worried about the condition of our country. Things are not well with our country. A lot of things are happening in our country that ordinarily should not happen.

“Ours is a land of promise, a land well-endowed by nature with a lot of wealth but we are not using the wealth to enrich our people. Instead, we are going down, down and down in terms of prosperity and progress.

“So, we have decided to work together – that is the most important thing because the problems are many. There is a general problem like the problems of ecology. The desert is moving South upon us, upon our country and we are not doing anything about it.

“The ocean is moving in from the South, parts of Lagos already under sea level and we are not doing anything about it. Parts of the South-south too already under the sea and we are not doing anything about it, and in the East, there is serious strange problem of gully erosion. Nobody seems to know what to do about it.

“And then, the economy itself, we have become a country that is longer productive because lack of productivity is the big problem now of our country, and we have to do something about it. We also have this huge problem of poor governance.

“It is no longer a question of a party, it is no longer a question of one party is doing better than the other, you can see now clearly, even though our political parties are rarely no longer political parties, they are just neighbours or combination of people who want to gather together and win elections and control the wealth of the country which has come to me, as making yourself rich.

“That is what it has become, and the quality of leadership has fallen so drastically that it is not possible to have any progress in the hands of such poor leadership and then now we have reached a point at which where we are actually killing one another. People burning around killing their countrymen and destroying their livelihoods.

“So, we cannot go on like this, we elders of the country have decided that we cannot go on like this. We must change actions to change these things.

“What we have decided is to set up – and this is the height of our decisions – to set up a Nigerian Elders Forum.

“The Nigerian Elders Forum that will establish its own means of meeting and study situation and provide solutions and make sure that the decisions have impact on the lives of our country. Those are the things we have decided today.”

PoliticsPresidential Advisory Committee: Buhari Has Taken Corruption Fight To Greater He by 14Ebiscoo(op): 6:45am On May 27, 2018
Admits corruption within anti-graft agencies

Iyobosa Uwugiaren in Abuja

Three years down the line, Executive Secretary of the Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption (PACAC), Professor Bolaji Owasanoye, says President Muhammadu Buhari has set a huge record in the fight against corruption and remained focused. Owasanoye said in an interview with THISDAY that corruption was not at the same level it was when Buhari came in.

The PACAC head, however, admitted that there were bad eggs within the anti-corruption agencies, which the appropriate authorities in government were dealing with in order to sanitise the system.

Explaining his perception of the Buhari government in terms of transparency and accountability, the renowned expert in international economic law, human development and social justice activism said, “Three years down the line, the intensity of the focus, from the part of the president, has not diminished.

“So, that tells you that the government is determined, as long as it has the opportunity to continue to rein in corruption; and I think that the government is doing well and corruption is not at the same level at which it was in the past, unless we want to be uncharitable.

“Corruption is not at the same level; indeed, some of the people who are highly critical of the government are doing so today because a number of the avenues that they used to feast on government have been closed.”

The executive secretary added that even if one found any “humongous” case of corruption under this administration, it’s very unlikely that its approval can be traced the president, which he said was the case in the immediate past. He said that explained why a number of people currently being prosecuted said they got approvals from the former president to do what they did.

Further explaining how things had changed from the past, Owasanoye stated, “I heard it on good authority that a certain highly respected statesman, elderly person visited President Buhari recently and he was waiting to see him at the Waiting Room, and the place was very quiet.

“He was just there with one of the aides of Mr. President; and this same person just said that a few years ago he came there to see a former president, and the Waiting Room was like a market; he said there were all manner of people who were there waiting to cut one deal or the other.

“The second example that I regularly use is that one of the things we have found out in this assignment, and based on things that were revealed by anti-corruption agencies, is that in the past, a number of the big corruption scams got their approval right from the top; but not now.”

He stated that those were examples that might be very obvious to the public that had helped the committee to evaluate and come to the conclusion that, surely, things were different.

The executive secretary said he wouldn’t be in the government if he did not think that the Buhari government meant well and was determined to tackle corruption.

According to him, “I had been offered place in government before now; but I didn’t accept it. I didn’t accept it because I was not sure that there was the determination and the political willingness to make changes, no matter how small.

“I think that the government means well and the government is determined. When we started, a number of people wished us well, and people who were concerned as well felt that the whole thing was a flash in the pan. And they asked, Bolaji why did you accept this appointment? They had argued that the whole thing would not last; that it was a campaign gimmick. But three years down the line the government has remained focused.”

Asked whether he was worried that some persons within the anti-corruption agencies had become part of the problem, he said there were bad eggs in every institution and that the anti-corruption agencies were not excluded.

Owasanoye stated, “We have heard some of the complaints and reports that anti-corruption agencies themselves were corrupt or have been compromised; they have to be dealt with; and when those reports came up, we give them feedbacks that enable them take the necessary measures.

“One of the examples that are very prevalent is that when they recover assets they re-loot them. That is an allegation. When we started our assignment, as a think tank, we responded to it. We recommended to the government that the core mandate of anti-corruption agencies was to recover the asset, not to manage or hold it.

“One of the things that we recommended was that there should be an asset recovery account for the government, so that anytime you recover money, you put it there. That is going on as we speak. Two, when you recover physical assets, like car, jewellery and all that, it has to be not only recorded and accounted for, it has to be managed by a central asset management committee..

He explained further that one of the strategy documents that his committee designed was a framework for management of recovered stolen assets, saying the framework itself is an inter-agency agenda designed to remove some of the opportunities for abuse that had been prevalent in the past.

Owasanoye explained, “All the anti-corruption agencies are represented in the inter-agency committee that were recommended. Again, the intelligence committee is situated in the Ministry of Finance because the Minister of Finance, which by law is actually the custodian of government assets.

“You recall that President Buhari recently, I think it was in Jigawa State or somewhere in the North, made a statement that the assets should be publicly auctioned so that everybody will know exactly what has happened to them. We have heard those allegations of corruption within the agencies; and we’ve responded to them by creating and designing a framework that removes opportunities and the possibilities for any corrupt practices.”

HealthJOHESU: Nigerian Government Gives Update On Strike by 14Ebiscoo(op): 6:52pm On May 26, 2018
The Minister of Health, Prof. Issac Adewole, has stated that the Federal Government is doing every possible to end the ongoing indefinite nationwide strike embarked on by Joint Helath Sector Union (JOHESU).

Speaking in an interview with newsmen on Saturday in Osogbo, Adewole said that Federal Government was not happy with the strike.

The minister said that the Federal Government was not sleeping in ensuring that the strike was called off as soon as possible.

“The JOHESU strike will soon be over. The Federal Government is doing everything possible to bring the strike to an end,” Adewole said.

Meanwhile, the Nigeria Medial Association (NMA), Osun branch, has accused JOHESU members of harassing medical doctors at Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital Complex (OAUTHC), Ile-Ife, Osun.

Dr Tokunbo Olajumoke, the Osun NMA Chairman, made the allegation at a news conference in Osogbo on Saturday.

He said JOHESU members in the hospital locked up critical facilities that the doctors needed to work with in order to frustrate the doctors.

Olajumoke, however, said that doctors would continue to do their jobs and render healthcare services to the people regardless of the JOHESU strike.

“The management of OAUTHC should without further delay provide adequate security to prevent the breakdown of law and order.
“Tentatively, ad hoc staff should be temporarily employed to assist in the smooth running of the hospital”, he said.

PoliticsRivers Govt Dares SARS Commander, Fakorede Over Threat To Sue It, Newspapers by 14Ebiscoo(op): 6:58am On May 26, 2018
The Rivers State Government has dismissed the threat by the Commander of the State Anti-robbery Squad (SARS), Mr. Akin Fakorede to drag it and newspaper organisations to court for libel over advertorial allegedly smearing him.

It said the threat was a joke of the century, promising that such a suit would be welcomed as it would afford it the opportunity to expose him and show to the world that he is a disgrace to the Nigeria police and a threat to lives and democracy.

A couple of newspaper organisations had recently published advertorials from the state government where it exposed the report of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) indicting Fakorede over his conduct in the rerun elections conducted in December 2016 in the state.

Angered by the publications, the SARS commander threatened to sue the state government and the newspaper organisations.

But in a statement yesterday in Port Harcourt, the state Commissioner for Information and Communications, Mr. Emma Okah, said the state government stood by the various publications complained about by Fakorede.

It described the SARS commander as a man whose love for power had deeply blinded him to the point of selling his integrity and compromising his commission as a senior police officer.

Going philosophical, the commissioner likened Fakorede to the proverbial satanic pig that eats the crops of the farmer and still waits in ambush to attack him instead of running away.

He said the state government was eagerly waiting for the court processes, daring him to put his reputation to test.

Okah said the state government would stand shoulder to shoulder to the assistant commissioner of police and his sponsors in defence of the rights of Rivers people to freely choose who would represent them through free and fair elections as other Nigerians were entitled to.

“Rivers State Government is eagerly waiting for the court processes and we dare Fakorede to put his reputation to test” Okah said, noting that the image of the SARS commander was not worth a piece of tissue paper.

“Fakorede is taking advantage of the rising moral decay in our society as otherwise, in an ideal situation; his likes ought to rot away in jail for the atrocities of polluting the electoral process in an alarming scale,” he said.

On the demand for the sum of N2 billion as compensation for libel, Okah described Fakorede as a gold digger whose reputation had evaporated and wondered the basis for such a laughable claim.

“The Rivers State Government reiterates that Fakorede is not a fit and proper person to be a Nigeria police officer of any rank by virtue of his direct involvement in crimes bordering on election rigging, violence, and assaults on the bodies and sensibilities of some Nigerians,” he insisted.

The commissioner said even though nobody was infallible, the minimum course of sensible conduct expected of Fakorede against the background of the wrong he had inflicted on the state was to apologise and seek God’s face.

He noted that the hollow threat of litigation was far below expectation.

“Certainly, a hollow threat of litigation is far below expectation. We expect that he will heed this advice and act well by treating Rivers people with deserving respect and dignity,” he said.

PoliticsAPC Reacts To Bauchi Deputy Governor’s Resignation by 14Ebiscoo(op): 7:35pm On May 24, 2018
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has reacted to the resignation of Nuhu Gidado as the Deputy Governor of Bauchi state.

Governor Mohammed Abubakar reacted to the development on Thursday.

The state chapter of the APC, said although Gidado’s resignation had not been formally brought to the notice of the party, it was wishing the former deputy governor, all the best in his political endeavour.

“We have nothing to say for now because the resignation was not brought to the notice of the party secretariat.

“The party is the mother of all its members; we are wishing him the best in his endeavour,” said the party, through its Publicity Secretary, Adamu Jalla ‎

But State Secretary of Green Party of Nigeria, GPN, Salisu Barau, said the resignation was ‘long overdue’. ‎

He explained that there were clear indications since last year that Gidado might ‘throw in the towel’ because of his dissatisfaction with affairs.

“Nuhu Gidado is an icon in the politics of the state; we gathered he had not been allowed to operate freely. ‎

“The deputy governor has done the right thing by resigning at this material time; our doors are open at the party level, we will welcome him to join GPN,” Mr Barau said.

Meanwhile, Special Assistant to the Governor on Media, Kabiru Lemmy, said the development would not have any negative impact on the progress of the state.‎

“Governance is a continuous process; if one person leaves, another person will continue with the programmes on the ground.

“There is nothing wrong in his resignation because it is a normal happening to be appointed, dropped or resign.

“But I must confess that we will miss him (Gidado) because he is a person with repute and is highly respected,” said Mr Lemmy.
