jara: Well, it could be a good idea if everyone is accepted but channeled into various disciplines according to their abilities. Some of the late bloomers will have the opportunity to return to serious academic field. It is a mistake to intentionally create hoodlums that will come back and hunt us. School itself is a way to teach kids how to behave into adulthood. It is not a favor, it is a way to steer children away from bad behavior.
pls educate them. If u drop them nxt 20yrs they wil turn to boko haram, kdpas, alaye name thm. If lagos gov will train thm frm nursery to primary, i dnt tnk they wl fail entrance exam in sec schl. the only Problem we hv in this country is poor educational background, later they will espect students to do magic in university.

Err...have they got an alternative for people with learning disabilities? Just because a person isn't book smart that doesn't necessarily mean that they're either dumb or unintelligent. Their brain just doesn't function well with the methods used for formal education, hence why there should be alternative(s) for people like that. You can just neglect them like that - that would become problematic and counter-productive on the long run.

Some of the greatest people to ever walk this planet had learning disabilities, however, that didn't stop them from achieving greatness.

JECBOSS: In as much as I understand what the Lagos state govt. is trying to convey, I think Nairaland should replicate this. I'm of the opinion that poor command of English language as usually observed on Nairaland is symptomatic of our falling standards in education.

So English proficiency = measure of education??! You do realise that English is not, will not, nor ever will be the first language to the majority of Nigerians. English is basically a foreign language to most of us. So what if we can't speak it fluently?

You're an example that demonstrates English proficiency does NOT equate proficiency in rational discourse.

Maybe we ve also forgotten the corruption in public schools. It is not only the unintelligent students that can score below 60%. What about those who could score up 80% but not intelligent, but because of the help of the teachers that love the students in question?

What "standard?"

Every child has got a right to an education regardless of his/her academic capabilities. If they feel some kids don't function well in the public school environment - how about creating special schools for them, to cater to their academic needs? This is the 21st century and all the billions these thieving politicians steal from the country is enough to build schools for these kids. They're the future of tomorrow and you can't disown them because of things they aren't responsible for. You disown them now, and they will definitely come back to bite you in the ar.se in future. Give them an education and a tool to survive. Else, the human survival instinct would make them survive by any means necessary - you know what means, don't you?

There are neighboring states and private schools with lower standards. If your child doesnt make the cutoff, find alternatives. It will make the parents sit up and pay attention to what their kids are doing in school. And if the kid needs technical education as opposed to classroom education. Almost free schooling for a state in Nigeria should be a priviledge and not for everyone. As it is the only state that does this free stuff. If i am paying tax for a bunch of kids to go to school, they better be using the opportunity well and turning out smart kids.

Some of the public schools overcrowded and in a mess. Education in both public and most private owned school in Lagos is nothing to talk about. Lot of private schools assist their student in external examinations.
Education/Health sector needs serious attention and regulation. The privately owned schools in Lagos competing with churches in numbers. Lot of school are housed in residential apartment and some school got primary to secondary school in a single bungalow.
This is not peculiar to Lagos alone anyway.
Seems education sector at the primary and secondary its gradually being abandoned by both federal and state govt.I know of a barber who runs a primary school here in Lagos. The situation is pathetic especially in the suburbs.

How about the ones from poor and disadvantaged backgrounds? There should be special school for people like that. Some of them might be dyslexic, or any other form of learning disabilities. And they need special facilities to learn.

If they are special needs children, they should not be in regular schools. Their parents can take care of that problem. These Lagos state schools already help the poor with education. The school fees are cheap enough for the poor to afford. All they raised was the standard. A poor child can be as smart as a rich child if they are determined and have access to a good education. They can do just as well as any child from a better background. A lot of private schools cheat for their students so their parents can get their moneys worth. This will target students who are in school based on merit. And parents will put in more effort to have their kids ready for a better education. At the end of the day, it only helps everyone. If a special needs child is in a regular school with little or no standard, how would their needs ever be considered when regular kids have their own needs neglected. . What you are saying is a bad standard of education is better than none at all. With better performing students, better teachers will and should be employed.

These people are saying this because that are not ready to build more schools to match the rising population of children that need to go to school...School is not meant for people who are already intelligent; People come to school in order to become intelligent and not the other way round... If you stop unintelligent people from coming to school where then are they going to get knowledge from?... In as much as it is good to have standard for everything including admission into schools, there should be room for every child that wants to go to school whether he/she has 60% or not... There are are average students and there are below and also above average student that is the reason why we have grades in school as in excellence, very good, good etc, everybody cannot be an excellent student ... Some children have every good backgrounds so they seem to do better in the early stage of education whereas others have not very good backgrounds (which is not any fault of theirs) hence they seem to struggle to meet up in the early stage of education and that does not mean they should be denied the opportunities to go to good schools... All the government needs to do is to build many schools to carry as many children as would like to go to school, after all nobody is asking any governor or commissioner of education to go and sell his or her father's land and build school for any body... To deny a child education for whatever reason is to deny that child a future... I REST MY CASE!

I'd rather they put the cut-off at 50% or lower(but not lower than 40%). Some students with lower scores will most certainly perform better than some of their 'high-score' counterparts. It's too early to classify students who score below 60% in entrance exams as unintelligent, and therefore, denied admission. However, 50% average mark at the end of every session is ok. And any student who has less than 50%(but 40% or above) in either english or maths should be promoted on trial.

At this stage of our development, we are supposed to make education a must for everyone. At least, every Nigerian must have basic education. No student must be allowed to drop out before he/she is able to complete JSS3.

Too bad LASG has a misplaced priority here.sad. Istill want to believe the commissioner for education has no teaching experience at primary and secondary school level.
