What does it even mean to be a consultant in the field of medicine? From what I gathered, it has nothing to do with the number of years one has practised medicine. And that's why there are medical officers that are never referred to as consultants, no matter how long they have practised medicine. Now a pharmacist that dispenses drugs to patients and in some cases directs one on how to take them, wants to be called a consultant for such duties.SMH. Simply because he/she feels she has been doing such for so many years and deserves to be called consultant on this premise. I think its absurd, but then this is naija where anything goes. Consultant ambulance driver, consultant cleaner, consultant radiographer cheesy grin grin grin

Area boys masquerading as doctors. Nigerians have suffered in the hands of these disgruntled elements. NMArelevance is being vanished . I can see u guys are struggling to keep afloat.
A responsible ''union "rejoice at industrial action as some of u guys.
Doctors went on strike in lagos and ekiti, nurses covered effectively well without much ado.
who say docs are indispensable. Not all docs senseless though.I commend those that love the job not only for money but see it as a calling .
Many actually went to med schl to escape poverty. This informed there disdained attitude to colleague in other health profession.

Modern health care is delivered multidisciplinarily. Guess what, no one is a superman .We are all very important .Guess why Canada/UK continue to top best countries to live in.

NMA is creating it own healthcare protocol possible only in poverty ridden Africa.

Those clamouring to become consultants should please look at the way residency program is structured.

I hope they realise that they will need to do the following.

Establish colleges for different fields.

Establish faculties for different subspecialties.

Have trained "consultants" in different subspecialties.

Cease to become permanent members of staff of hospitals, and have their appointment terminated at the time of expiration of the program.

Undergo training a minimum of 4 years equivalent to at least a post PhD.(almost impossible given that their first degrees are not at par with MBBS). Involving novel clinical research.

Be ready to have their appointments terminated if they fail to pass college exams.

phantom: rising from their respective emergency delegates meeting, the national association of resident doctors (NARD) and the nigerian medical association (NMA), have called for an indefinite strike from 00.00hrs july 1st.

notice is hereby given to the general public to visit the hospitals and get healthcare from the consultant pharmacists, lab technologists, nurses, optometrists, physiotherapists and radiographers.
these other healthcare providers will clerk you, examine you, interprete your lab results, interprete your radiographs/CT's,carry out your surgeries, give you appropriate drugs and nurse you back to health.

so in effect, you will get your standard world-class care without the doctors.dont be afraid!

in johesu we trust!!!!!! grin grin grin grin grin grin grin

n/b: the general public is also by this notice informed that they must resist any attempt to discharge their relatives from hospitals, they should insist on getting healthcare from the other staff.

I can't but pity those patients that will be managed by the so called Kangaroo Consultants. Even when they have health issues with any of their family members, we know who most of them run to.

Demdem has been thinking about this issue for a long time now and have refrained from making comments on this issue. Now, i have my verdict.
Doctors are superior to other professionals in the sector and any attempt or effort to equate them to others is bullshit. I don't like it also but hey, that's the reality. Life itself isn't fair.
It's doctors first and the rest.

Here are there demands

1. The post of Deputy Chairman Medical Advisory Committee (DCMAC) has been circularized and operational. Rather than abolish it, the NMA hereby demands that four (4) DCMACs for teaching hospitals and three (3) for the Federal Medical Centres be appointed forthwith to assist the CMACs whose statutory responsibilities are too heavy for any single individual to handle. Directors in other government agencies are supported by several Deputy Directors, why not the CMAC who is also a Director? Such a DCMAC must have same qualifications as the CMAC. www.medicalworldnigeria.com

2. The NMA is opposed to the appointment of Directors in the Hospitals. This Position distorts the chain of command in the hospital, induces anarchy and exposes the patient to conflicting treatment and management directives with attendant negative consequences.

3. The NMA demands that grade level 12 (CONMESS 2) in the health sector MUST be SKIPPED for medical doctors. Consequently no medical/dental practitioners should be on that grade level anymore.

4. The title “CONSULTANT” in a hospital setting describes the relationship between the Specialist Medical Doctor and his patient. It will be a source of confusion if the title is applied to any other health worker who statutorily does not own patient. NMA therefore declares with unmitigated emphasis that if “non-doctor consultants” are appointed, it will lead to chaos and anarchy in the health sector. This should not happen.

5. Relativity in health sector is sacrosanct. The NMA hereby demands for immediate implementation of the January 3rd, 2014 circular. The NMA also demands the immediate payment of the arrears of the corrected relativity for 22 years during which her members were short changed.

Much as we are not against salary increase for any category of workers, either in health or elsewhere, the NMA demands for immediate adjustment of the doctors’ salary to maintain the relativity as agreed and documented once CONHESS is adjusted.

6. That Government should expedite the passage of the National Health Bill (NHB), and extend Universal Health Coverage to cover 100% of Nigerians and not 30% as currently prescribed by National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

7. Surgeon General of the Federation MUST be appointed with immediate effect.

8. The entry point of the House Officer should be corrected to CONMESS 1 step 4 as originally contained in MSS/MSSS while the Registrar/Medical Officer is moved to CONMESS 3 step 3.

9. Clinical duty allowance for Honorary Consultants should be increased by 90% of CONMESS

10. Adjust the specialist allowance as contained in the 2009 collective bargaining agreement. Additionally, ALL doctors on CONMESS 3 and above MUST be paid specialist allowance or its equivalent that is not less than 50% higher than what is paid to other health workers.

11. Hazard allowance MUST be at least N100, 000 per month for Medical Doctors.

12. Immediate release of the circular on rural posting, teaching and other allowances which MUST include house officers.

13. Immediate withdrawal of the CBN circular authorizing the Medical Laboratory Science Council of Nigeria (MLSCN) to approve licenses for the importation of In-Vitro Diagnostics (IVDs). www.medicalworldnigeria.com

14. Immediate Release of Circular on retirement age for Medical Doctors as agreed with the Federal Government (FG)
15. The Federal Government through the Federal Ministry of Health should formalise and implement the report of the interagency committee on residency training as well as release the uniform template on appointment of Resident Doctors in line with earlier agreements. Moreover, a concrete Funding framework for residency training must be established. The Overseas clinical attachment must be fully restored and properly funded in the interest of the nation.
16. That in the interest of harmony in Federal Medical Centre, Owerri the government should pay the salaries of our members in the centre as agreed on 21st October, 2013.
17. Immediate concrete steps must be put in place for the reintegration of our members back into the IPPIS platform.
18. All attempts to coerce house officers not to join NARD must stop.
19. The orchestrated intimidation, harassment and physical assault of our members in departments of Pathology (Laboratory Medicine) by Laboratory Scientists which is being tolerated by the Federal Ministry of Health (FMOH) must stop.
20. The Endless circle of incomplete salary payment to our members in many hospitals in the name of shortfalls in personnel cost must stop.
21. Universal applicability of all establishment circulars on the remuneration and conditions of service for doctors at all levels of Government must be guaranteed.
22. Government should as a matter of urgency set up a health trust fund that will enhance the upgrading of all hospitals in Nigeria.
23. The position of Chief Medical Director/Medical Director must continue to be occupied by a Medical Doctor as contained in the Act establishing the tertiary Hospitals. This position remains sacrosanct and untouchable.
WHY DID THEY NOT ASK THAT THE POST OF VICE CHANCELLOR BE OPEN TO EVERYONE IN THE UNIVERSITY SINCE ASUU AND SANU ARE MADE UP OF GRADUATES

CAN YOU BE A JUDGE OF THE HIGH COURT OR COURT OF APPEAL IF YOU ARE NOT A LAWYER?

WHY DO THEY THINK THE HOSPITALS WHERE LIVES ARE SAVED EVERYDAY SHOULD SACRIFICE THE ESTABLISHED LEADERSHIP I.E. CHIEF MEDICAL DIRECTOR?

24. The NMA henceforth shall not accept the continued violation of any of the terms of the 2009 Collective Bargaining Agreement. This is exemplified by the payment of Medical Physicists and Optometrists with OD (who are on CONHESS) call duty allowance using the CONMESS Circular. Similarly, the phrase “Ministries, Departments and Agencies” (MDA) in the said agreement should replace “Federal Ministry of Health and other Federal Health Institutions” as contained in the 2009 CONMESS Circular. www.medicalworldnigeria.com

The best you dudes can do is to lock up the labs and the stores because you know that doctors can do the labs and also the stores. The doctors on the other hand have encouraged their patients to resist being discharged by you dudes so that you can "treat" them but we all know you dudes will take the lazy way out which is to discharge them and say doctors are on strike. In effect collecting money as salary for doing nothing.

A non academic staff cannot be a Vice Chancellor, there are senior staffs who have PhD, even some lab technologists but they cannot by possession of PhD be Vice Chancellor.

Right from university years when the medical students will be forming like say na only them dey read book.

All these their demands are selfish and aimed at intimidating other health care professionals. Such greed.

@otoks, SANU does not segregrate Academic staffs from Non-academic staffs.

Meanwhile, I'm yet to see a non-academic staff (NASU) working within the university with the title "Professor".

If you see a Librarian or Bursar with that title, then he or she is also entitled to the post of a vice chancellor.
Anyone with that title is qualified to be appointed as a Vice Chancellor. We are not talking about Doctorate.

GOD bless you.you want to be called a consultant without going through the extra post graduate training required.the consultant nurses and pharmacists abroad have just their first degree abi?do you know what extra degrees they have acquired to earn the title consultant? look let's not be deceived, the aim of all this is to earn the same as a doctor which is impossible and will be fiercely resisted.the reasoning will be that why can't a consultant radiographer earn the same as a consultant gynaecologist after all they are both consultants.well in my opinion we doctors should leave the title for them and use something else.I don't care AS LONG as they do not earn the same.THE RELATIVITY MUST EXIST. the mediocre cannot head the exceptional students.it will never happen in the health system. why can't the position of VC in our universities be open to both SSANU and NASU since they are made up of graduates? JOHESU will not like how this drama will end.the final and inevitable destination will be privatization when the government has felt they have had enough and we all know who the biggest losers will be.to catch a glimpse of what that future will be like, visit the health department in maybe shell or LNG and look at the hierarchy in place.
