Kzinne: its a shame that at this level u still dont hav any idea as to wat u want to do wit ur lifeIf you could please read the HBR article ' managing oneself ' by world renowned Peter Drucker your opinion may be changed. He higlights several important points one of which is that most people have no solid career paths well into their 20's. To the OP the aforementioned article will be helpful to you too as you decide your path. We live in a world roday that increasingly needs multi-taskers and multi-skilled adaptable Individuals. While you need to concentrate mostly on your strength, and technical abilities you also need to develop business skills and a network. An MBA can help you achieve the latter two as well as expose you to novel ways of thinking and problem solving. It is also advisable to seek out a mentor who is willing to guide you. Well done so far on developing yourself, continue at the same rate and you will go far |

klax: Hmmm guys plz let us always reason well before we judge things. Mind you guyz hope you all remember this same Sahara has never for once report anything good about Nigeria ever. Let us not forget all these Billion this Billions that are these really true or is that how money just flow around so easilyIdeally an allegation like this needs supporting evidence, however the impunity and corruption in our system is so rife that it's entirely conceivable, nay even definite that this happened.. 'this billion, that billion' is the order of the day in nigerian politics hence why most have made up their minds on the veracity of the allegation |
Having met and conversed with her I have to say she is quite a remarkable lady. She impresses me no end! |
Good to see a new OS, the more the merrier. I'm far more excited though for sailfish os from jolla. The team that brought maemo/meego to life on the n9/00 and will rise from the ashes of the nokia dump like a phoenix! |
The quantity and quality of public libraries in nigeria is poor. We should consider commencing local community book repositories and reading spaces. |
Charliemorgano: Its just empty pride.....I know women who earn triple of their salary and yet very humble...Ladies like Ngozi Okonjo Iweala is my ideal woman...anytime....anyday...why hasn't she divorced the husband as a world bank vice-president.....Its just pride....pride...prideNOI's husband is an accomplished neurosurgeon, maybe that has something to do with it. |
Horladortune: what do i need to take along for me to be issued the visa at point of entry?passport, return ticket, $50 is all you need. Immigration usually asks the purpose of your visit and where you'll be staying. |
a medical certification prior to obtaining a driver's license applies in most (read civilized) jurisdictions. The reason is to protect all road users from potential fatalities that may directly or indirectly arise from medical conditions. A few instances below from my experience illustrate why this is necessary: - Middle aged man driving a HGV (heavy goods vehicle) suddenly loses all power in his upper and lower limbs while driving. He had a stroke! Fortunately he managed to steer of the road and caused no fatalities. His license is suspended until he regains all limb power. - Young 20 year old man driving down the motor way suddenly has a seizure, rams into car in front of him 2 people die. License suspended until seizure free for good length of time. - 52 year old female, type 2 diabetic on insulin . had a hypoglycemic attack while driving and runs over 2 kids playing on the street. No license until documented hypo free. - 80 year old lady driving for so many years, losing eyesight now but still drives. pulls out off drive way and ploughs into a car she didn't see causing whiplash to its occupants. Goodbye to her license. I could go on but i think the point is well made. Everyone needs to have an eye test and have a doctor sign off on their license application before said license is issued. Note however though that there a not many conditions that deny one the right to hold a license. Straight forward conditions like hypertension, arthritis etc pose a minimal to negligible risk |
I agree that when one commits a crime the consequence of forfeiture of certain liberties including suffrage is entirely appropriate. I don't know that the well being of society will be best served in the occasion of the 'prisoner vote' getting sufficiently large to sway political discourse and force politicians to pander to their desires. As it now stands everyone is aware that to continue to be able to affect political discourse, one must obey the law of the land. The choice thus is be a good citizen and retain the right to vote or be convicted of a crime and lose that right. That seems only fair to me. Any permutation of the aforementioned choice and consequence paradigm will be tantamount to eating your cake and having it and we know that never works! |
MacLovington: this is the only part that made sense to me in that article as any/combinations of those facts could be reasons why nigerian marriages are failing in the us....The thing though is that caucasian males don't usually catch as much jungle fever as caucasian females do. |
Horladortune: Anyone know if this is true? I learnt that you can get your visa at point of entry in nairobi airport how true is this? Going for tour from nigeria....Yes it is. I've been twice and got a visa at the airport. I'm going back in a week! |
Great article! The one input i have is regarding the size of one's CV. The 'KISS' (keep it simple stupid) principle is generally applicable however in some industries 2 page CV's aren't taken seriously. My CV is currently 5 pages long and would be classed as short in comparison to many others CV's in my sector. So in summary consider the sector you're in when deciding on the length of your CV. It is usually good to look at as many other CV's as possible and get feedback on your CV in order to get a good idea of what is generally acceptable. What is key as well is having a great cover letter (ideally addressed to a specific individual) that is tailored to each application and highlights your specific fit to that job. Also try to alter your CV - within reason of course - to fit the current job you're applying for. |
This is a symptom and further evidence of the system failure that abounds in our dear country. We can look at the specifics of the case and go back and forth but the bottom line is there is no health system and events like this happen frequently and will continue to happen. Contrast this with the 'Savita' case in the republic of Ireland where the people are forcing the government's hand over a maternal death. Sadly in Nigeria the woman's husband probably has no means to recourse. We all must demand differently from ourselves and our leaders, get logically enraged and seek positive change whenever the system failure arises acutely. On a slightly different but related note, allegations of negligence in the Nigerian medical system seem rife but no one ever hears of cases going to trial or professionals being censured. I've toyed with the idea of setting up a non profit group consisting of volunteer lawyers and medical professionals to seek out cases of gross negligence and take them to court or the professional regulatory bodies. When a few prominent negligence cases are won it will have a ripple effect in the sector and perhaps get the doctors to be a bit more circumspect in managing patient. I know this method is not ideal but where ethics don't inspire, fear of prosecution can be a great motivator. |
I think for a man to expect a submissive wife he must first head his family in love, respect and understanding. When this is the case the submission comes naturally -usually- and allows for a peaceful and loving home. That submission covers all matters be it financial, emotional, occupational or physical. When one really looks at it, if a man provides for all the aforementioned needs of the woman adequately then it's not really a question of submission but just the natural thing to do; Dem no dey beg person to come chop better food. The problem arises when the man tries to rule in pride or exercise dominion or compulsion on his wife, the natural response of course for any woman is to oppose this compulsion. Similarly, a man can be frustrated in his attempt to have a loving environment in his home if his wife is a rancorous woman. The caveat here is to choose your spouse wisely; flee from domineering men and rancorous women respectively. Methinks that generally speaking men like to feel in charge and for things to go smoothly women need to make them at the very least think they're in charge. This is a skill that's evident in women in successful marriages. I'm not suggesting being subversive but there are ways to settle a difference of opinion that keeps everyone happy. The man is the head but the woman can be the neck. Where two heads collide one must scatter but where the neck turns the head follows. |

Most European places are great to visit, can't do much wrong going to any of them. From my experience, I have to first rep a city I lived in for 6 years - Dublin. Great city with a lot of character. Many historical sites in the rest of the country that are worth visiting too. Advantage with Dublin and Irealand is it's smaller than much of the rest of Europe and quite easy to navigate and see most of it within a short time. Turkey (not strictly european) is a great place. I visited a coastal town that had a number of UNESCO world heritage sites, was well worth it. Great friendly people, good healthy food and nice weather too. London the traditional Nigerian vacation spot doesn't do it for me. Worth a visit i guess to see the usual stuff but i am not too fond of it |
An individual's ultimate outcome is related to a complex interplay between nature, nurture and choice. Having said that, our society has largely failed to produce 'Men' and indeed 'women'. What we have are a lot of grossly overgrown kids. Evidnce of this abounds in many a Nairaland post. Being a 'man' or a 'woman' is a constant endeavor that one must continuously strive to achieve. We need to do more individually and collectively to make sure we are and our children become the right kind of men and women |
AjanleKoko: I like this. It works both ways actually.Never works for me, still get rude aggressive retorts... our society unfortunately is one that promotes aggression and rudeness, both incompatible with good customer service |
carefreewannabe: You have to refer to a specific society / country to prove it because it's not the case in all of them. The most complex of problems often have the easiest solutions. Yes i can give you evidence but the question is will it be read if i do. |
bia! wetin person dey find for Iran!!! |
I've been to enough cities to know that everyone of them has its own problems. East or west home is ultimately the best - Abuja Nigeria. We just need to set about fixing it |
It depends on what kind of holiday you want. I've never not loved going to a new place. I just drop my bags and get lost, so much fun! So the question is what kind of holiday do you want |
carefreewannabe: I agree with you to some extent.I think there's always a lag of at least a generation. Those countries are reaping what their parents have sown. In many cases they have sown great institutions and systems that will stand the test of time. I think that the future will however see far less progress and far more social problems. It's already happening really - Jails are full, drug use is rampant, morality is declining etc. I think that it is almost better that one doesn't get married and has a vasectomy/ tubal ligation than get married/ have children and not work hard at being the best damn husband/wife and father/mother you can be |
carefreewannabe: When is a marriage successful? Not strictly true, we can study sub populations within a group. The references i posted look at that and affirm that for example illicit drug use and criminality are higher in unmarried groups. The societies that are 'messed up' can be largely attributed to the subgroup within it that have dysfunctional families. Look at every developed country's social strata and consistently lower socioeconomic groups have high incidence of dysfunctional families. If you're in the UK the Jeremy Kyle show is illustrative or the Jerry Springer show in the US. A successful marriage is not hard to detect. In any case what we need concern ourselves most with is making our own marriage/ family work. When many families are successful, our society is successful. Thank God for my parents who brought me into this world in a loving stable environment that gave me the springboard to go on and achieve. |
carefreewannabe: ok, before you make me read ALL of these papers, which from the titles don't seem ALL to be related to the topic but anyway, you better summarize the arguments that support your view so that we can talk about it.You're right they're not related to the topic but i recall you looking for evidence that marriages don't make for a better society. Simply said they do! Outcomes across the board are better when marriages are successful. It is instructive that no human society (admittedly to my knowledge) exists that doesn't have marriage as central in its operation. Now back to topic. Nothing is for everyone, least of all marriage. Humans commonly segregate in normal distributions. Applying that to marriage (if no one objects) it would mean something around 5-10% of people would probably be better of not being married. So it is not a necessity but chances are if you do it right you and society will be better off |
Sagamite: No, it is not only critical mass that leads to it gaining mainstream. It is also popular culture and familiarity.Thank you for seeing my point you have proven yourself an intellectual indeed and it's not just economics, it is health, education, security, corruption, our reputataion to name but a few. These things affect our social sanity too. |
