What opportunities are there in Nigerian hospitals for medical students from other parts of the world to do an elective. I'm involved in running a charity that sends medical students and equipments to developing countries to help them and learn at the same time. Any info regarding possible hospitals or opportunities should be posted here. Any info at all would be much appreciated. |
The Grand Challenges in Global Health initiative aims to engage creative minds from across scientific disciplines — including those who have not traditionally taken part in global health research — to work on 14 major challenges. The challenges vary, but they share one essential element: Their solutions could lead to breakthrough advances in global health. The bill and melinda gates foundation give grants to deserving ideas. I encourage everyone who can to attempt this challenge and hopefully make our world a better place as a result For more information, visit: www.gcgh.org |
In my opinion your genotype should not influence your decision really. If you're both in love and are compatible then go for it. It's all statistics in the end and it's up to He who gives life to decide how your children will turn out. Moreover in the event you get a sickler caring for a sick child can be one of the most unifying things a couple can experience. |
I think animal testing is a veritable way of determining drug efficacy. There really isn't any other way to test drugs than on animals first before humans. I don't see it as a bad thing because thee end result is useful drugs that prolong human life. Note that before a drug is released human testing is done on healthy volunteers. This means that we subject animals to no less than we subject ourselves. As for cosmetics most countries have made it illegal for companies to use animal testing in developing cosmetics which i think is smart. Animals don't have to die just for us to look and smell good. |
Did anyone see 9ice's performance at Mandela's birthday concert? Well i saw it and frankly I thought it was appalling. Who's idea was it to have 9ice there in the first place!!! I seriously wonder what the bloody heck they were thinking. Gongo aso was poor live and 9ice confirmed that he is nothing more than an average musician. Obviously this is a medical issue (either psychological or physical) that should be referred to a medical professional. If anyone advocates 'taking off' at the site of any medical issue then i think it's safe to say that we will all be alone if everyone heeded that. |
I usually don't have an issue against being asked what i do. Usually i'd ask first as i think it's a great conversation starter. Furthermore gives an insight into the person and one can take the conversation on from there. Granted some people mightn't ask with the same purpose in mind, however i think more often than not that there really isn't anything else to talk to a strnger about except what they do. This then provides an avenue to gain a better understanding of an individual because wether one like sit or not, what one does largely defines who they are. |
tboy1:I second tboy1. Brilliant idea, couldn't have come up with something better myself. |
you must be kidding!!! |
i have to add my voice to those of others in saying that Chimamanda's writing is simply amazing. Read the first one, now in the process of reading her second novel. She's a breath of fresh air, don't think i've read any writer as remarkable as her since Chinua Achebe. I applaud her and look foward to reading more of her books. |

Hepatis is latin for liver Inflamation is usually denoted wit an -itis suffix. e.g gastritis; inflammation of the gastric mucosa, tenosynovitis; inflammation of the synovial sheath around a tendon , pancreatitis; inflammation of the pancreas. Therefore it follows that hepatitis is inflammation of the liver. This liver inflammation can be brought about by various things including viruses (ranging from A to G) The particular virus in question is the hepatitis B virus. One can either be chronically infected or acutely infected. The acute infection is short term i.e lasts less than six months. Has four stages: - incubation period, as the name implies - pre-icteric period, characterized by experience of fatigue, sickness, loss of apetite and nausea - icteric phase, Jaundice (either a mild or severe form due to impaired liver function of converting bilirubin to bile) - recovery, as the name implies Chronic is long term, no cure is available. Can lead to fibrosis of liver tissue and then cirrhosis (note that alcohol can cause this as well). Can also lead to hepatocellular carcinoma (liver cancer). Some people with this form may not have any symptoms while others may have severe complications and die. Dependent upon their viral count Why should there be more publicity for it? well because there's a vaccine available for it but no cure. People at high risk should be educated about it and vaccinated and vertical transmission prevented. Many people walk around Hep B +ve unaware of the risk they pose to themselves and others. Only when more people know their status will its spread be curbed. It costs more to manage and treat than it is to prevent, and i mean not just financially but emotionally as well. Hep B facts about 100 times more infective than HIV and 10 times more infective than Hep c Virus can survive outside bod on dry surface for up to a week 9 out of 10 adults clear only experience an acute infection and manage to clear the virus. In those unable to clear it, it progresses to chronic hepatitis. Only 1 in 10 children clear the virus 9 out of 10 progress to chronic infection Almost a million die each year from Hep B |
Well everything ends then abi, My beliefs here on earth help me anyway to live a fulfilling life free from stress and rancour and also gives me something to look up to and hope upon. However if there is and i know there is, then jackpot all my efforts won't be in vain. One may think of it as an insurance policy. I'm not losing anything by believing in God but rather, paying my premium by obeying him. But for one who doesn't and eventually finds Out he does exist, sorry o is all i can say! No premium paid no insurance cover. |
I'm a chess lover, just thought i'd sign in. How did the tryouts go, make the team? |
Atheists claim that there is no supreme being and no life after death right? That's fair enough but just one question to yiz: What if there is a God and there is life after death what will you do then. |
One phrase has to be incorporated into this thread: Free agency. Man is free to chose whom he will follow. Lucifer was free to choose his own path and his choices led him to where he is at the moment. Many choose various paths and consequences will result from those choices. God is all knowing and all powerful but will not impinge on our freedom to choose. The devil provides that alternative and he decided to do so. Judas chose to betray, nobody forced him. I choose to write in this thread and have automatically chosen to bear the consequences thereof. |
I think your asking the wrong people that question, you should be asking her. What do you have to lose by doing so? |
No i don't think inter-faith marriages are such a great idea. May seem good at the start but is usually bound to detriorate afterwards especially when children enter the equation. Faith is a huge part of many people's life, having that in common is usually a good basis for a great relationship, although it isn't always the case. However inter-faith marriages can still be viable if the couple are willing to work at it just like the post above (catholics and anglicans don't differ by much well except if you were in Nothern Ireland, then it wouldn't be funny at all). I wouldn't fancy marrying a woman from another faith. |
Yeah i think it is. A woman in the home for the early years of her children's life would serve the children better rather than both parents working and neglecting their children. I believe the decision should not be forced on the woman but mutually agreed between the two. Children's upbringing would be better than otherwise. |
@macaluars I'm not exactly a pastor, don't like to see pretenders, but would rather they were religious than anything else. The effect of religion cannot be quantitatively measured but all one needs to do is compare religious countries with not so religious and a difference in morals is evident. Also compare the values of someone who has never been influenced by religion to one who has and a difference again is observed @okejazz, mrmayor, donbomb So are yiz all suggesting that much less people be religious for there 2 be less religious pretenders? |
Echidime:Your reasoning amazes me! |
Po Deep:Ever thought that we know that they are spoofs but still hate them nontheless. Well since u claim to be sensible y don't u tell us d worst movie u've ever seen. |
Yea i suppose so but i think it'll take way more than cricket to stop Mugabe. |
Well it is sad that it doesn't reflect in their lives, it should and might just eventually. Thats why I'd still encourage them to be religious. |
@ backslider i think u should read that passage of scripture again. It clearly says the woman's hair is the covering for her head. It also says: if a man have long hair, it is a shame unto him. Thus a woman doesn't need to cover her hair with a scarf and a man's hair shouldn't be worn long. |
well for one i won't wonder how she got it cuz one never can tell. Hopefully she'll come out and tell me straight away if it was from intercourse with another person but i won't push for it, Could potentially destroy our marriage if she's been faithful al along. After that we'll carry on as usual, afterall the vow was in sickness and in health. I'd probably even contact the virus too so that we share the pain together. All it's gonna do is kill and we're all gonna die anyway! |
Red_Lips:I'm sorry but i don't suscribe to your thinking. maybe those who read their bibles at home are good but i assure u they can be better by going to church. Those who seem not to gain from church going would be worse without it. If a thief goes to church everyday but still steals then happy days cuz perhaps without church he'd be killing as well as stealing, u get my point. @ samsilo, i understand where you are coming from but my argument is that being religious would make the realization of ones follies quicker and easier. Everybody is a pretender of some sort9some may be more than others) so don't point fingers at any body. And as far as i know Odili is not corrupt as i've not heard any court of competent jurisdiction convict him. Innocent until proven guilty what ever happened to that! @ mr mayor, well at least your sister knows that it isn't exactly honest. How does she know that, well i think it's because she's religious. Those who aren't religious don't regard dishonesty as being wrong and that's worse than pretending. Don't get me wrong i don't like to see situations like you've described but i'd rather they were in church every week than 'who knows where else they may be instead'. |
mrmayor:Well like i said b4, chances that he'll change from his corruption (if he is corrupt) are much higher if he keeps going to church as compared to if he stopped. Ever thought what would be the case if he wasn't religious at all that perhaps he would be even more corrupt than he is at the moment (that is if he is). You never can accurately measure the impact religion has on people's lives. |
Red_Lips:Chances are that they are more likely to 'show what they learn' eventually by going 24/7 rather than by not going at all! |
A general theme running through this thread is hypocrisy, however i think one very valid point has yet to be highlighted. Religion or religious institutions are not rest homes for the already perfected, they are avenues for imperfect people (every human being in other words) to gain the impetus to live a better life. I don't go to church to show others i'm perfect, i go because i'm imperfect and need the Lord's mercy to carry on, by acknowledging my imperfections, his existence and his power to make me better. If i were perfect i wouldn't set my feet in any religious institution. I'm Nigerian, i'm religious, am i a hypocrite, yes i am, but at least i acknowledge that i am and try as much as i can to practice what i profess. I believe i stand a better chance of becoming a better person by being religious than by not being so in the name of not pretending. Notice i speak for myself and for no one else cuz that's all i can do. Every man for him sef in this thing called life. I AM NOT PERFECT, I AM A WORK IN PROGRESS. RELIGION IS THE CATALYST THAT SPEEDS UP THE WORK! |
