ACM10: What authority does an optometrist have to comment on the epidemiology of glaucoma?...Patently untrue. Anyone with even a basic knowledge of epidemiology can comment on the epidemiology of any disease. Whether the comment is accurate or not is a different story altogether. Judge ones 'authority' on the the quality of the comment. At OP, Glaucoma is a cause of blindness. I haven't the time to verify the numbers but seeing as it is a treatable condition, any press about it is good press. Symphony007: Before this padon was annouced where do you think alameshia was? Langushing in kiri kiri prison? He has been a free man since, no one asked anything about him but now because the presidency is openely padoning him, some fools here are feining outrage. Obasanjo's buddies victor attah, peter odili, achike udenwa and many others are all at large today enjoying their loot which dwarfs whatever this man took from a state whoes riches cannot be compared to the guys state mentioned above. But because he fell out with the God father and was punished. Where is the outrage from you guys against the fat cats who stole more than this man ever taught to but where loyal to the godfather. Alams is the scapegoat. The gift that keeps on giving.....nigeria has an incredibly long way to go!... true, but if even the scapegoat gets away what message does that send to other goats... This whole thing is shameful really but not altogether suprising. Is it not the same Alams that after the indictments, conviction and return of stolen funds arrived home to a hero's welcome. Watching it on AIT i had to blink a million times and pinch myself to make sure i wasn't dreaming. corruption is the way in Nigeria. Try as you may, it is unavoidable and burned into our sub-conscious. Example; in many a school, teachers provide 'expo' for a fee and doctor results on demand, to get anywhere you must sort someone. Try do it the right way and you're in for a 'treat'. All our systems reward cutting corners as confirmed by this pardon. Your consent is not even needed sometimes for you to take part in dishonest practices. Case in point: I sat in a WAEC exam where answers were written on the board for all in the class to see. Things like this have a normalizing effect. On average we Nigerians don't notice many corrupt practices and good luck to you if you dare notice and decide to speak up. An uncommon courage is needed to oppose it as the voice of honesty is almost always drowned out in the noise of the corrupt. Personally i try but we need a critical number to start to change our ways, to eschew corruption when it's in front of us and not partake. you will be labelled with many names but know you're engaged in the pursuit of a greater good. Our leaders are largely a reflection of the larger society. The better the selection pool, the better the leaders! |
Going by the way the info is presented, i can add the following to 'dangerous chemicals': - Water - Toothpaste - Sugar - Vitamin A - Vitamin B... The list is endless really simply because toxicity is almost always dose related. i.e the danger of a substance is related to how much of it one digests over time. so the question is at what point do these substances actually become deleterious? I would posit that the amount of exposure to these 'dangerous substances' resulting from chewing gum by the average person is nil to none. Chew away! |
Sagamite: You are a person! How is it that you were so quick to resort to name calling. This is aggressive, bullying behaviour. Lends credence to your claim of a high self esteem as evidenced by this paper Relation of threatened egotism to violence and aggression: The dark side of high self-esteem. Baumeister, Roy F.; Smart, Laura; Boden, Joseph M. Psychological Review, Vol 103(1), Jan 1996, 5-33. doi: 10.1037/0033-295X.103.1.5 Abstract Conventional wisdom has regarded low self-esteem as an important cause of violence, but the opposite view is theoretically viable. An interdisciplinary review of evidence about aggression, crime, and violence contradicted the view that low self-esteem is an important cause. Instead, violence appears to be most commonly a result of threatened egotism—that is, highly favorable views of self that are disputed by some person or circumstance. Inflated, unstable, or tentative beliefs in the self's superiority may be most prone to encountering threats and hence to causing violence. The mediating process may involve directing anger outward as a way of avoiding a downward revision of the self-concept. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2012 APA, all rights reserved) High self esteem not all it's cracked up to be. At op a few suggestions Decide mentally to be good at it Study any resources Take up opportunities to practice Prepare well Practice before a friend who will give honest feedback Before speaking visualise a situation where you did well previously and let that be your anchor. Keep practicing and seek feedback each time. Be a learner, it's OK and rewarding to be. In the words of Steve Jobs, stay hungry stay foolish |

A massive Pulmonary embolism (PE) may well be a cause. I also heard she complained of a severe headache prior to passing on which may have been caused by a subarachnoid haemorrhage. Both conditions can be suddenly fatal. Regarding PE, long distance flights are indeed a risk factor. Remmeber to when flying: - Stay hydrated, drink plenty of water. Avoid alcohol. - Carry out recommended exercises regularly while sitting - Walk around the cabin as much as is possible This is particularly pertinent for: - females over 35 who smoke and/ or take the oral contraceptive pill. - People with cancer or history of cancer - Family history or personal history of clots This is by no means exhaustive but should help whoever is interested. Remember though that sometimes regardless of whatever precaution one might take, illness can and does still strike. So live and let live, enjoy life and add value to humanity in all you do. Let your eulogy be easy to write! |

I share the thoughts of many that agree with cameron's assessment of our curent state and hope that the G8 is able to pressurise our ruling class to be more transparent. Those that feel the G8 has ulterior motives or no right to meddle should consider the following popular sayings: You never throw away the baby with the bath water and even a dead clock tells the correct time twice a day. Sometimes an end is more important than the means! |
Was a 100 years ago! Time to get over it and make lemonade with our lemons. |

Our society is too rigidly hierarchical hence the ensuing battle between doctors and nurses. I've heard similar arguments concerning who should head a hospital. The damage this type of discussion does is that we expend our energies on largely irrelevant matters while people suffer and systems collapse. Merit should be the principle we base our decisions on. If a nurse has a good suggestion then the doctor needs to take it on board. Nobody has a monopoly on knowledge and wisdom. On the challenge of being a nurse in nigeria I can't help but be sympathetic to their plight. It must be a nightmare dealing with more than a fair share of often irate and irrational nigerians. Working conditions not great, facilities not there, pay no use. I pray nurses maintain their humanity as patients are usually at their weakest and need them to get through their illness. |
naijaobi: something baffles me.. Hw can keshi keep omeruo, a natural right back on the bench and instead played efe ambrose who is a natural centeral back... It is very annoying.. We all know that ambrose plays well for his club in that centeral back position, why play him in the right back position??tRUE, PARTICULARLY AFTER THE CAPE VERDE GAME WHERE HE PLAYED REALLY BAD |
inexperience, they should have just gone to the corner flag to run down the clock |

more research needed. @Bilyonaire where does that your 'man and god' quote come from? |
Humans are flawed and fallible beings including sporting greats. Excessive idolization of any individual serves no useful purpose. We should Learn from their positive attributes and also learn to avoid their inevitable flaws when exposed. Whenever revelations like this emerge one understands why religion exists to give us a perfect type to attempt to pattern our lives after. Specifically regarding Lance, his consistent bullying and treatment of his opponents was rather appalling, any redemption will be difficult for him. |

The reason couples often look alike is due to the conscious and subconscious mimicry of facial expressions that occur consistently over time such that the natural state of facial muscles become largely similar! |

Well i watched a bit of her reality show and didn't think it was a great idea but that's just my opinion. I'm sure she has reasons for doing all that she does. Fair play and good luck to her. |

On several recent trips to an African capital city I couldn't help but be riled by the huge numbers of Caucasians entering into and taking advantage of the country. They have the best lifestyles, cushiest jobs and are largely treated as 'gods'. I Contrast this with my experience in Europe where despite being a professional and a law abiding resident I'm still greeted with jibes such as: 'go back to your country', 'leave our jobs alone' and 'you're not welcome here' among other profanity laden insults. The juxtaposition of these two realities in my mind seems to be pushing me towards aligning my sentiments on foreigners in Africa with some of my European 'friends' sentiments on Africans in Europe. I know the downside to the perpetuation of this prejudice but it's something i can't quite help. I find myself frequently needing to convince myself logically that my experience needn't taint the fact that anyone has a right to work and live wherever they please should they fulfill the requirements set by the local authority Anyone felt similarly or have any thoughts on this? |
Altruism is a rare virtue hence Africa is best for Africa! |
It is only in Nigeria that one can get this $$hit. I expect an ophthalmologist to make this projection.
