Former Abia State Governor, Dr Orji Uzor Kalu said on Monday that President Muhammadu Buhari has addressed the injustices associated with the annulment of June 12, 1993 Presidential Election, with the posthumous honour being conferred on Chief MKO Abiola as the winner of the freest and fairest election in the country.

Kalu, who spoke with Reporters at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) on his arrival from the United State, also declared that he was the first governor in the country that declared June 12 Public Holiday but he was challenged for doing so by former President Olusegun Obasanjo.

According to him, the recognition of June 12 has proved wrong those doubting the commitment of Buhari to democracy.

He said the President has put Abiola in the map of the world. This, he stressed, was what past Presidents failed to do.

Kalu said the decision of Buhari to decorate late Abiola with the highest honours in the land shows that he is a democrat that the people can trust.

He however urged Buhari to go a step further by honouring the Chairman of the then National Electoral Commission (NEC), Prof. Humphrey Nwosu, who superintended over the elections.

Kalu also wants Buhari to address injustices people of the South East experienced during the Biafran Civil War by declaring the region a special area.

Kalu said Buhari should be commended for giving financial autonomy to the state judiciary and houses of assembly.

He said the new bill signed by the president, which gives autonomy to the judiciary and legislature should be extended to the federal arm of government.

He said, "I was the first governor that declared June 12 public holiday and Obasanjo wrote me a letter to challenge it.

"Now that Buhari is working, he should also remember Humphrey Nwosu, the man that conducted the freest and fairest election in Nigeria. He should also be honoured.

"Buhari should go a step further and declare the south east a social area because people in the region were given ill treatment. They lost mines and property. He has already made a good step by paying the Biafran police their entitlements."

Some Christian leaders held a thanksgiving for Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo at the presidential villa in Abuja on Monday.

Last week, a chopper conveying Osibanjo to Aso Rock the Nigeria Customs Command and Staff College, Gwagwalada, Abuja, where he attended the graduation ceremony of Senior Division Course 1/2018 participants, was forced to land few seconds after take-off.

Laolu Akande, spokesman of the vice-president, commented about the incident on Twitter.

“VP Osinbajo attended the graduation ceremony of Nigeria Customs Senior Course in Gwagwalada today (Thursday),” he wrote.

“On his way back, it was decided, for technical reasons, not to fly the chopper that had brought him to the venue. He drove back to the Presidential Villa and continued his schedule.”

On Monday, Seyi Malomo, chaplain of Aso Villa hosted senior pastors of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, leaders from the Christian Association of Nigeria(CAN) and Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria(PFN).

They offered praises and thanksgiving to God for sparing the life of the vice-president.

Malomo service said there was every reason to thank God for sparing Osinbajo’s life.

“Last week we received the news with shock that the vice-president’s helicopter engine failed,” he said.

“We thank God that preserved him. The preservation of the leaders is the preservation of the nation and as a result we want to thank God, so this programme was organised to thank God for his watchful eyes over our leaders, over our nation and more particularly over the deliverance for the vice- president.

“We will be spending 120 hours praising God, teaching about thanksgiving, praying to God to bless Nigeria more, establish peace in Nigeria more, preserve our nation more, give us the victory that is needed.

“As we all know we are a nation that deeply loves God and a love for God that is also born out of deep appreciation because we know that God loves us too and his love for us manifest in his good works towards us.”

The Rivers State Chapter of All Progressives Congress, APC, says Governor Nyesom Wike has turned himself into a “Father Christmas” who shares money at will”, just as the party expressed worry over what it described as the Governor’s penchant for alleged misappropriation of Public funds.

The APC added that it has confirmed that Governor Nyesom Wike intends to clear salaries owed Civil Servants in Ekiti state.

APC in a statement obtained by DAILY POST and signed by its spokesperson, Chris Finebone claimed that governor Wike, has concluded plans to pay off six months’ salary arrears the government of Ekiti State is owing its workers ahead of the forth coming governorship election in that state.

Finebone says the planned clearance of salaries owed by Fayose comes against a decaying secretariat complex where Rivers State civil servants endure untold inconveniences every working day.

According to the statement, “Indeed, it comes against the suffering of pensioners owed several months of gratuity and pension. Paradoxically, even political appointees of Gov. Wike are enduring untold hardship, suffering and smiling except for the select cabal popularly referred to as Cardinals.

“The APC recalls that after the defeat of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the 2015 presidential elections, Gov. Nyesom Wike effectively took over control of the party nationally and has since been spending billions of naira belonging to Rivers taxpayers to sustain the PDP.

“Sadly, we recall that Gov. Wike spent several billions of naira to hold an ill-fated national convention of the party in Port Harcourt in May, 2016. Afterwards, Wike single-handedly sustained the PDP with billions of naira belonging to Rivers people throughout the period the party was under the leadership of Markarfi-led caretaker committee.

“Gov. Wike it was who used the resources of Rivers State to fund the protracted legal tussle between the caretaker committee and its factional group led by Senator Ali Modu Sheriff.

“Following the victory of the Makarfi-led caretaker committee at the Supreme Court, Gov. Wike, again, bankrolled the national convention of the party that followed in 2017 with Rivers State commonwealth.

“This culminated in Wike decimating and silencing the South-West and other leaders in PDP to successfully capture the national structure of PDP by installing his acolyte and stooge, Prince Uche Secondus as the party’s national chairman.

“Quite sadly, we note that the decision of Gov. Wike to pay outstanding six months salaries owed to Ekiti State civil servants is coming as part of Wike’s inordinate desire to maintain his position as the leading financier and national leader of PDP.

“Whereas other PDP governors are busy developing their states and bettering the standard of living of their people, Gov Wike remains consumed by the obscene and inordinate craving to continue as the little god of PDP.

“While no one begrudges him the pursuit of his vane glory, the bitter truth is that Gov Wike is fritting away resources that should be channelled at bettering the lot of the ordinary Rivers people.

“We find it hard to believe that a governor that came into office and immediately discontinued and returned Rivers youths on overseas scholarship on account of lack of funds, finds it convenient to playFather Christmas for purely political reasons.

We ask: why is it that other PDP governors of equally oil-rich Akwa Ibom and Delta States are not throwing the commonwealth of their people at sustaining and controlling the PDP?

“Again, we recall that in his bid to take advantage of the killings in Benue State some months ago, Gov. Wike doled out N500m to Benue State with the sole aim of luring Governor Ortom to join the PDP.

“The APC calls on Rivers people to protest the decision of Gov. Nyesom Wike to, once again, embark on this senseless and atrocious decision to spend billions of naira belonging to Rivers people to pay six months outstanding salaries of Ekiti State civil servants while the workers and people of Rivers State are suffering poverty, indignities and penury.”

A member of the nPDP who became member of the Board of Trustees (BoT) of the APC, Prince Benjamin Apugo, has assured that their decision to suspend further discussions with the Presidency will not lead them into pulling out of the ruling party.

Apugo who disclosed this to journalists in Umuahia, yesterday, maintained that there was no crack in the APC, saying members of the nPDP needed to coordinate themselves and meet President Muhammadu Buhari over the alleged marginalisation faced by its members.

He also appealed to the president to create presidential liaison offices in non-APC-controlled states; akin to what ex-President Shehu Shagari did during in the Second Republic.

You couldn't remove him because you don't have the absolute power to do so. The Senate is there to check you on that. Jonathan was able to remove Sanusi was because Sanusi had few months, so Jonathan suspended him based on FRN recommendation , by the time the suspension could have elapsed, his tenure was over. Buhari couldn't play the suspension card because Emefiele had about 4 years to go by the time buhari took over.
