In older days what Elnathan lacks was called wisdom. Today, it's called Emotional Intelligence, EQ.

Chimamanda already said she could never win this case in the court of public opinion because most of the context is lost on the public.

Some facts in this case:
Mentor = Chimamanda
Mentee = El Nathan

Fact. Anybody who thinks otherwise needs an extended course on critical reasoning.

She'd been a mentor to a talented El Nathan who had come under her tutelage and had gone out of her way to make sure the guy succeeds by giving him a rare opportunity with her publisher - an opportunity of a life time.

And the mentee's ego could not stomach being called a boy by his mentor? And because of that he torpedos a massive opportunity and the entire relationship he'd cultivated for long?

And u guys are hailing him? Common guys!

Read this her statement and you will understand why she called him her boy.

"This is somebody who once knelt down in front of me as a greeting, in public, to show how grateful he was for my support".

That little respect given to her really got her head swollen and her feminist nature kicked in too.

One of my student would be more tolerable.
While I agree with you on most of what you've written, can't it just be her as an individual talking? Why does feminism has to have anything to do with it?

Special treatment? You didn't see such statement on my post and please, refrain from inducing it where it's not so.

I don't want to be treated specially. Any guy should treat me how he'd treat anybody he has no grudge with.

I don't know if he is, but she's right about one thing: his writing feels very hollow, like someone trying constantly to stir up emotions, not like someone inviting you to deep introspection. I can rarely remember what he wrote and I read last year. I remember being all hyped up about him and now I read his tweets and usually roll my eyes and move on.

Like if he was on NL, he would constantly be writing to gain likes and start a thread war, not say anything meaningful.

I'm no fan of Ms. Adichie but she's right about it.

Also why be so offended by "boy"? If the biggest publisher in the world (who happens to be male) said to a crowd of hopeful writers "I'm proud of my boys" referring to them, won't they have swallowed it and laughed and brushed it off in the quest for greatness? Would we have heard complaints if it was a Nigerian politician sharing money with "you boys take that"? They would shrug and swallow it with a tight smile. And she introduced him to her publisher, sounds like she was invested in his future
So maybe their work relationship was close, to her.

When people make a fuss over stuff they take everyday in real life undecided

I respect Ms .Adichie and i also visit Elnathan's blog everyday, that guy is good.I'm happy he attended Chi's workshop, that means he wants to get better and be the best in what he does..But i tink we need to understand "word" in its "context" and "environment"..A statement such as "one of my boys" means nothing to maybe an american man but here in nig it is a jab "below d belt",not when ure talking to a MAN,with mayb two wife and kids (lol)..Believe me,most nig men will see it as insult..UNLESS,ure feeding him!If u refer to an oyinbo man as "proud",he sees it in a positive way,but my people in nig will not accept it,he views it as an insult!Ms. Adichie is a great woman nd it seems frm d exchange of emails she also feels Elnathan is an humble, polite and respectful person..Its just MISUNDERSTANDING!!!They should let it sly...

Exactly what I said too.
He has a problem with the term because she's female even though he's clearly under her,was her protege for a while and was also seeking to use her connections to rise.

Just that in such matters, wisdom is profitable to direct. She's not familiar with the nigerian terrain of expression so even if she meant no harm, it is lost on the populace because of pre-conditioning.
In her oyibo mind, he should be fine with it because his status as her underling in not secret but she over estimates enlightenment about such matters

Like a negro can call another nigga but a white folk would be committing career suicide if he does.

You're kinda right about his writing but then his satirical and witty approach is a unique talent in itself.

Chimamanda knew what "boy" meant. They are all looking up to her. In any society in the world, it means an underling of some sort. That was why she deliberately highlighted the kneeling down affair and the profuse apologies from him. She wanted to show that he had been acting like a humble understudy and was now being ungrateful. She may have been tactless but she won this battle.

El-Nathan should lay low and dismiss the whole thing publicly with a laugh and no explanation, later contacting her with a brief, non-arse kissing apology. He caused it by building his relationship on a footing with her his pride could not maintain.

Lol...EVERYBODY cannot be dsame...Well,some can evn go to d extent of "licking madam ministers ass" for few dollars sef,BUT there are people out there that will never do such!Yes,call it "Pride","Ego" or anything, those trait are not entirely bad in itself...U dont mess up my self esteem because u wanna connect me to ur publisher..When i finally get to meet "ur publisher",i'll still need it,so dont mess it up..I tink Elnathan is jus being African.Very few african men will like to be refer to as mere "boy"..I dont like it too!
Secondly, someone said that its because Adichie is a lady/woman,i tink there is a connection in that also.Mayb if "she" is a "he",MAYBE,and i repeat, maybe elnathan would not av seen it dat way...So i still feels d guy is jus being African and am sure theres notin wrong in that also.

Seems what most of you seeing nothing wrong with how Chimamanda addressed John, are saying is, is that, it's okay to be condescending because someone wants something from you.

So because John expects her to help him, he should shred whatever pride he has and take whatever is thrown at him happily? While this is how it usually works, does that make it okay?

Yet feminism is all about equality? I'm learning a lot.

Now someone is thinking towards my direction..Refering to a fellow adults as "one of my boys" is totally "unafrican"..Its might not be wrong in its entirety depending on d "context" which it was used..Even if my lecturer in sch refer to me as "one of my boys",i will accept it because that is how things works here, but i wont feel good about it(especially if we are in dsame age bracket)..Elnathan doesn't like d tone of dat statement. Its simple,he's African!

El-Nathan John aka El-Joe was my course mate in Uni. I dare say that given half the oppurtunity that Chimamanda was given, he is a far better writer than she could ever hope to be.
A woman with a big ego is all I see.
A woman who thinks she is the be all and end all of writers and therefore should be worshipped.
She should give it a rest.

You have no idea what you're talking about. El-Nathan's writing is coarse and unimaginative, flat; his technique is generally hamfisted and heavy-handed. The story that got him a Caine prize shortlist was a terrible eyesore. Somebody on that panel had been smoking weed. If he received twelve MacArthur fellowships, he'd still churn out middling work. He could never hold a candle to Chimamanda.

The same reason Chimamanda didn't like some americans calling or referring to her as "sistah" (genuine gestures by the americans btw) should be the same reason why she should not refer to a grown ass man as "boy". She should've nipped this in the bud by just simply apologizing(don't have to be a genuine one). We didn't need all that long explanation. She lost here By Virtue of the non-famous and of vice of the famous.

This is part of what we keep preaching on this country. We have a culture of respect in Naija. No matter how rich or popular one is don't look down on others.

Chimananda insulted this fellow by calling him a boy. Honestly in some climes they would have dealt ruthlessly with her for being rude but what do we see here people trying to justify this humiliation because its her.

She should tender an apology first then the guy can retract his statement.
Be you who you must show respect for the individual. You are not feeding him so why call him your boy.

I patiently went through this to know if I would see a wise man and you made my day.if elnathan is my son, in our privacy I will call him a fool. My friends wisdom is very important. Chimamandi, a worldwide renowned author had chance to communicate with him and to the point of refering him to her agent to help polish him for breakthrough is bashing her for a non issue. Wisdom is really scarce. Elnathan l hail you but I know your big ego will not take you far. You will later realized that humility is the best way to the top.

It has nothing to do with being a northerner. Nobody likes to be referred to in a condescending manner. And quite frankly, the phrase 'one of my boys' has a lot of connotations (that elnathan chose to respond publicly and the tone of his response is another kettle of fish).
For married ladies, imagine your husband aspiring to be a writer or trying to hone his writing skills and having to attend a seminar only to be referred to as 'one of my boys' on international media by the facilitator who happens to be a lady (or even a gentleman) that might just roughly be within your age range!
