Boko Haram fighters killed 11 troops and seized weapons in a raid on a military post in the latest such attack in northeast Nigeria, residents and a military source said on Sunday.
Gunmen in five trucks and on motorcycles stormed the checkpoint in Bunari village near the garrison town of Monguno in Borno state late Friday, leading to a fierce battle.

"They came around 6:30 pm (1930 GMT) and attacked the military checkpoint and soldiers responded with fire," resident Amadu Sheriff told AFP.

"The attackers overpowered the soldiers who took up positions in the trenches dug round the checkpoint from where they fought the Boko Haram gunmen," he said.
[/b]
Three civilians, including a woman and her child, from a nearby settlement, were killed by stray bullets, he said.

He said residents of the nearby settlement evacuated on Saturday and moved to Monguno for fear of renewed attacks.

Sheriff had no idea of military casualties but saw "two ambulances carrying dead soldiers" being taken to Monguno, eight kilometres (five miles) away.

A military source who confirmed the attack said 11 troops were killed.

"Four (military) vehicles including an APC (armoured personnel carrier) and a gun truck were carted away by the terrorists," said the military source who asked not to be identified because he was not authorised to speak on the incident.

The attackers were repelled with the help of reinforcements from Monguno, he added.

News of the attack was slow to emerge due to poor communication in the area where Boko Haram has destroyed telecoms infrastructure in the last three years.

Boko Haram has launched repeated attacks recently.

The Islamists late Thursday stormed a base on the outskirts of Jakana, a village 30 kilometres (18 miles) from Maiduguri, firing guns and rocket-propelled grenades before sacking and burning down a police station.

Two weeks ago, the jihadists overran a military base in nearby Yobe state.

On July 14, jihadists believed to be loyal to Boko Haram factional leader Abu Mus'ab Al-Barnawi, raided a base in Jilli village.

Dozens of troops were said to have been killed or missing.

The day before the attack, 23 troops went missing after a military convoy was ambushed by fighters in the Bama area of Borno state, where the Abubakar Shekau faction of Boko Haram is strong.

The attacks underline the threat Boko Haram still poses despite repeated military claims the group is spent force.

Accurate. FOB was widely used during the intense fight against BHT.

To the men of the the Nigerian Armed Forces special force. I give you all the biggest respect and accolades. In this coin warfare, the men of the AFSF has been a terror to bokoharam. The presence of elements of the AFSF serves as courage and morale boost to other troops on the field.

While talking to a friend who's with the 22 TF, he commended the AFSF who backed them up after their outpost was overrunned. They delivered firepower and proved what it means to be a SF operative.

I just want the government to support them the unit more by improving their kit and weapons. More FOB made up of the AFSF should be made established. I haven't been on operational missions with them but we have moved out on escort missions together.

The ambush that led to the kidnapping of police officers could have been extremely worse if not for their professionalism. The terrorist know about the convoy pattern. Allowed the AFSF convoy to move on before opening fire on vehicles. The officers expecting other vehicles to follow suit were disappointed as some drivers had to abandon the vehicle and the convoy scattering. With the police officers in trouble and not minding the fact that bht attack was from both position had to return back to the initial position but could do less.
They called in for air support and I think 3 Jets were immediately scrambled with the F-7 taking off using it's speed advantage to intervene. The AFSF relayed their position to the F-7 through visual contact by flying low to ascertain the next best action (F-7 arrived before ISR)
THE f-7 fired rockets to create a barrier between own troops and bht but little could have been done as civilians are already running around for safety where they eventually got into bht hands.

The convoy was a weak one. Armed with opened hilux and less than 20 men against over 100 bht who came in heavily.

Make this war finish. Good men will die but this does not mean we are less capable. Some bad comments from Nigerians when military position is being overrunned.

An advisor from one of the big countries told me if we were to be in daily ground operations in Syria, Mali and Iraq, they'll be taking casualties.
Why can't our regular troops use something like that in (picture 2)? Why do the military have this undying love for rusty AKs? Why cant we properly kit our troops which is the least any serious country fighting an internal war does. Its heart wrenching seeing soldiers especially recruits go for escort missions or ambushes on almost bare bodies. If the problem is that we are too poor to properly kit this guys we can atleast add a level of protection to their bullet proof vest by adding Tungsten titanium carbide steel plates(Which can hold a .50cal bullet), this alone can boost confidence. In one of my numerous visit to 44ref hospital, one will almost shed tears with the various degree of injuries both officers and men suffer, to make matters worse some of them are just too young to be in the military in the first place.
No be only special forces suppose they kit well oo.
May God help us sha

Is it IBB,OBJ,Abdulsalam, buhari or TY danjuma that are patriotic Nigerians?
Or is it the likes of ihejerika, amosun and all the other corrupt military personnel that are patriotic?

There is nothing like a patriotic Nigerian. If Nigerians are patriotic, then Nigeria won't be in the mess it is today.

Or is it most of those recruits that pay or has to know someone before they can become soldiers, police, custom,NSCDC.

Men you really messed up by saying I'm unpatriotic for saying the truth,is retired colonel dasuki more patriotic than I am?

What's even there to be patriotic about being a Nigerian, is it the stress i have to go through anytime I wanna renew my passport, or not having power supply anytime I'm in Nigeria...unarmed IPOB members were harrased and killed by Nigerian soldiers.

Nigeria is nothing but a failing state, see boko haram insurgency, Fulani herdsmen are not ending anytime soon.

A gallant soldier identified as Francis Ifeanyi Franklin, has been declared missing by his family after a Boko Haram ambush at his base in Borno state. According to an alarm raised by his family, they have not been able reach him since the Boko ambush since last week as his phone has been switched off.

His sister who wants confirmation from the military about his whereabouts, wrote;

"Please my brother is missing........ He was among the soldiers that is in Borno state, where Boko Haram was reported, we have not heard from him for the past two weeks now .. His name is Francis Ifeanyi ......... Please help us confirm if his still alive on not"..

This is as another soldier, lieutenant Gaius Garba, has been reported as one of the soldiers killed by Boko Haram last week in an ambush. He left behind a daughter and a pregnant wife.‬

Meanwhile, fresh report has it that Boko Haram fighters killed 11 troops and seized weapons in a raid on a military post in the latest such attack in northeast Nigeria, residents and a military source said on Sunday.

Gunmen in five trucks and on motorcycles stormed the checkpoint in Bunari village near the garrison town of Monguno in Borno state late Friday, leading to a fierce battle.

grin grin grin that’s not necessary
Let’s be honest the navy is doing the best they can, the fact that they have men deployed in the NE speaks volumes, they have SBs special forces operating independently in the NE and many of the AFSf guys we post here are naval officers.

Were I think they have a lot of work left is securing the lake chad region, senate should provide fund for procurement of locally manufactured gun boats in the hundreds to patrol that area, same strategy used to pacify the deltas.

“The Federal Government has assembled 1000-strong military force, compromising the army, air force, police and the civil defence to launch fierce attacks on the bandits terrorising the villages and towns of Zamfara State.

Following directives by President @MBuhari, the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has begun the deployment of fighter aircraft to Katsina, the airport with the closest proximity to Zamfara State to make for immediate and effective response to the menace of the bandits.

This had not been possible in the past because there was no fuel depot facility in Katsina, but NAF has devised a way around the problem.

The President has also authorised the engagement by NAF, of advanced satellite surveillance technology to help in accurate detection of movement and locations of the bandits.

The government had to go to this extent because of the limitations of conventional surveillance, as the use of satellite technology could make the task of NAF less problematic....”

Baba, in most cases men don't even care about this bullet proof . During fire fight at times, you'll see men gisting with bullets flying except it's extremely intense.

BHT is in no way our match when it comes to conventional warfare. It has been identified that our problem is lack of equally distributed firepower. Our military equipments are being used in the northeast and some BTR are also deployed in the SS.

Actually, we can't deploy every single military hardware because of bht. We only need to work on more equipments. During our intense offensive last year which saw the deployment of technology, that was when I realized we can actually deal with those bastards without IFV and Tanks. The government deployed surveillance where we had a full knowledge of their movement.

CH3 and A-jet destroyed their hardware while ground troops and the hind take them on. Bht was able to take in casualties ranging from 60-100+ during each encounter. We do end up with just injured soldiers alone.

Naval, Air assets are armed with Tavor. AFSF and direct contact troops are armed with beryl, AK74M, arm1 etc. The weapons used depends on your choice but they operate calibers which are widely used while also considering the availability.

There are modern AK 47 in wide use by the troops. AK-103 is also in use in the northeast. Some of these guys are pictures do not make it online.

I understand your point on the regular terrorist looking AK riffles seen online. These soldiers are mostly embedded with SF, TF etc who are also armed with better weapons. In some cases, you just need to shoot sporadically to hit something so the regular looking AK47 do the work too and this makes the use of riffles like beryl being in wide use. You can't arm all officers with Tavor except you want to start seeing videos of BHT with Tavors.

SF shoot what they can hit. They're trained and better shooter so there's no need arming a regular soldier with the beryl when he can fire 3-4 rounds hitting the same target and the AK - bullets plenty every where. Kill a terrorist and jab out his own magazine then fix. It's easy and the guys are used to it.

The government however has been phasing out the use of the regular AK series. Our AK seems to be mostly of the the Chinese origin too and they're working perfectly fine.

The problem now isn't the guns. Kit up is available but cannot be maintained as these soldiers spend weeks far away from base.

Long range operations. Most supply are armament and foods.

C-130 is a fixed wing aircraft not Helicopter. Chinook is a dedicated transport Helicopter which the NAF don't have.

I have been closely following the NA for over 25 years now. In Sierra Leone, our men seemed to have the most problems, with enemy gun trucks.
Nothing has changed since then, except that NA has now adopted its own gun trucks aka technicals.
The rate and power at which it fires, has led to all the most recent setbacks.

We need a solution. This weapon system most be destroyed accurately at distance , or it will wreck havoc on troop formations.

The western armies deal with it using an ATGM. Fire and forget.

@joshing josh u are correct. Why wouldn't a general know what his troops need ?

Well, I think PMB hopes to win this war on a shoe string budget. The problem is a penny wise pound foolish one.

Look at the economic wreck insecurity is turning northern Nigeria and the middle belt into. Had our security forces had the capacity, these could have been contained.

You are spending money on the anchor borrowers program, only for the "mongol hordes " to cross our porous defenseless borders, sack our markets and rustle our cattle.
Unfortunately. Under the previous administration, money was made available, but was stolen by the leadership. Military and civilian alike.

C-130 is a fixed wing aircraft not Helicopter. Chinook is a dedicated transport Helicopter which the NAF don't have.

Thanks for the correction but I still stand with the decision of more C-130 because it has more space to Carry both troops, ammunitions and supplies and also fuel...

I think the helicopter is the best Machine for such ops due to its ability to land anywhere, the C130 may be used to airlift goods to nearest military facility while the chinooks or any transport helicopter do the delivery to front line troops.
PS. The Chinooks can even airlift IFVs, humvees supplies etc That bird is one hell of a beast.
The Super Puma which is one of the dedicated airlift heli we have can do the bager job, I've flown in it once believe you me that lady can suffice, its a cheaper alternative to Chinnoks which can cost as much as $30m per unit.
Last last me still feel that sharing the $320m Abacha loot is not justifiable or sensible, if the FG is serious on this COIN ops then we should invest that money on Military hardwares.

We could use patrol mortars & or MGL/AGL

Myself, Jake and others have constantly wailed on the need for medium lift helos in good numbers. How hard is it to get 20-30 units of new & pre-owned/used Mi-17s (with at least 10yrs useful life), refurbished and pressed into service

Infact, if we had those chariots we could vertically envelope boko, set up stop groups for fleeing ones & altogether end the part of " they fled with gunshot wounds " that keeps coming up in defence briefs
