Eagles skipper Ahmed Musa goes for goal against Swaziland in Lobambo

World football governing body FIFA have turned down a request by Nigeria for Tuesday’s World Cup qualifier against Swaziland to be moved from Port Harcourt to Abuja.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), it was specially gathered learnt, demanded the match be moved to Abuja for “logistical reasons”, but FIFA said the application was not received within the mandatory 10 days allowed for such a request.

“The request failed because it was done within the 10-day window allowed for such a request,” an official disclosed.

The southern Nigerian oil city of Port Harcourt has hosted Nigeria’s home games this year thanks to the generosity of Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike, but his election has now been nullified by a tribunal which has ordered for a new vote.

Minnows Swaziland held star-studded Nigeria to a goalless draw in the first leg of the 2018 World Cup qualifier in Lobambo and the return clash is slated for Tuesday afternoon in Port Harcourt.

The overall winners of this match-up will advance to the group stage of the qualifying series for Russia 2018.

Live stream info: Nigeria vs Swaziland, Ghana vs Comoros - Nov 17, 2015 WCQs

In all honesty, when African giants Nigeria and Ghana were paired with minnows Swaziland and Comoros, fans expected things to be a very easy two-legged affair for both the Super Eagles and the Black Stars. Without showing any disrespect to their two opponents, neither Comoros nor Swaziland have ever qualified for a major tournament either in Africa or internationally, and the general consensus was that it would be a case of damage control for both hosts this past Friday.

However, as things stand, the return legs - set to be contested this Tuesday - are actually quite finely poised following two surprise 0-0 stalemates in Swaziland and Comoros on Friday.

The pressure is firmly now on Nigeria and Ghana, both chasing qualification for their third and fourth consecutive World Cup tournaments respectively to get things right in front of their home crowds after two insipid performances. On the other hand, these results now leave supporters of Swaziland and Comoros hoping that they just may be able to do what appeared to be the unthinkable: to book their tickets to the next round at the expense of these two West African powerhouses.

Nigeria vs. Swaziland
A lethargic performance from Sunday Oliseh's men at the Somhlolo National Stadium was not what Nigerian supporters would have expected as they took to the pitch on Friday. Although the surface - made up of rather uneven artificial turf - obviously made play difficult, both goalkeepers Carl Ikeme and Swaziland's Nhlanhla Gwebu were kept busy throughout the course of the game, meaning that the hosts were not always keen on sitting back and parking the bus (albeit, of course, they did so for spells of the match when it became necessary).

Although Oliseh attempted to spark life into their flagging attack by introducing Obafemi Martins and Kelechi Iheanacho, it was not enough to break down their dogged opponents and Harry Bulunga will certainly be the happier of the two tacticians when the two sides meet again in a few days' time.

Ghana vs. Comoros
Meanwhile, Avram Grant's side are in a similiar situation after failing to take advantage against Comoros on the road this past Friday. However, despite the disappointing result, skipper Asamoah Gyan is still upbeat on his team's chances of progressing as anticipated.

"Ghana's [fans] should expect a good performance [as] we are playing to qualify," the 29-year-old star, who now plays his club football for Chinese outfit Shanghai SIPG notedpost-match.

Nonetheless, he was full of praise for the approach taken by Comoros, yet expects his side to turn things around on home soil.

"We were more compact with everybody behind the ball and Comoros were relying on counter-attacks which really helped their game plan. [All in all] they were disciplined on the field [as] they knew what could happen to them playing [against a team like] Ghana."

With such a bold promise made to fans, those in attendance in Kumasi as well as those viewing on television sets around the country and across the world will definitely expect the Black Stars to come through with a vastly improved showing this Tuesday.

Will Nigeria and Ghana, as expected, get things right to progress? Or will fans be in for another shock should Swaziland and Comoros pull off what would be one of the biggest upsets seen in recent times for African football?

Make sure you do not miss out on these two crucial World Cup qualifiers by bookmarking LiveSoccerTV.com's special Nigeria vs. Swaziland and Ghana vs. Comoros match pages for specific viewing options and times for your current location.

It's an interestingly tough group.

Tunisia are 2011 CHAN Champions.

Niger Republic have the bulk of their "main" senior national team based at home.

Guinea are tough west african customers any day.

But it's ok, Nigeria's Home-based Super Eagles stand a "good chance" of progressing.

Interesting to see that defending Champions, Libya didn't qualify.

Adepoju: Why Oliseh Played Four Strikers Against Swaziland

By Sab Osuji:
Former Nigeria midfielder, Mutiu Adepoju, has defended the tactics adopted by Super Eagles coach, Sunday Oliseh, in Friday’s goalless draw against Swaziland in Somhlolo in a FIFA World Cup qualifier.

Adepoju who is currently the Administrator of the Kwara Football Academy said the idea of fielding four strikers in the second half of the match was borne out of coach Oliseh’s desire to get the goals but regretted that unfortunately, the goals refused to come.

“I was present at the match in Swaziland. The Super Eagles started the game with a 4-2- 3-1 formation and created a lot of scoring opportunities in the first half but unfortunately they missed all the chances,” the former Super Eagles midfielder told Comple tesportsnigeria.com.

“But in the second half, Oliseh altered the formation when he introduced Kelechi Iheanacho and later pulled out Mikel and replaced him with Obafemi Martins.

“This meant the Super Eagles had four strikers all in the midfield as the search for goals intensified.”
The return leg match of the Russia 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier will be decided inside the Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium, Port Harcourt on Tuesday and Adepoju believes the Super Eagles still have the chance to wrap up the game.

“Yes, I think they still have the chance to win. They did well in Swaziland and I believe they will win in the return leg match come Tuesday,” he stated.

Swaziland Coach Promises To Attack Super Eagles In PH

Swaziland’s Sihlangu Somnikati have vowed to employ an offesnsive approach when they face the Super Eagles go on Tuesday for their 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier in Port Harcourt.

Namibian official Jackson Pavaza will be the referee for the game that will hold at the 40,000-capacity Adokiye Amiesiamaka Stadium, Port Harcourt.

The first leg ended goalless on Friday and a scoring draw or a shock win for the Southern Africans would see them past favourites Nigeria.

On arrival in Port Harcourt on Sunday morning, Swaziland coach, Harries Bulunga, reiterated the position he held after the first leg in Lobamba on Friday.

“We held our own very well in the first leg and we will go for broke on Tuesday,” he told the Nigeria Football Federation website.

The Sihlangu are hoping to take the Eagles by surprise and create one of the biggest surprises in international football, but Eagles coach Sunday Oliseh has expressed confidence in his boys to “do the job on Tuesday and get us into the group stage.”

I do not understand what Adepoju is talking. The problem is not about the number of strikers on the pitch but the balance of the team. Oliseh weakened the midfield in search of a goal by taking of Mikel. He should have taken off a defender to bring a striker and go three at the back.

[b]Oliseh Criticizes Rabiu Ibrahim

SUPER Eagles Head Coach, Sunday Oliseh, has revealed that the senior national team coaches will soon build a standard side that Nigerians would be proud.

Specifically, the coach, whose team laboured to a goalless draw with Swaziland in a 2018 World Cup qualifier on Friday, said the coaches now know those who are not fit to play for the Super Eagles, adding that there was no room for mediocrity in team.

Reacting to performance of some of the players on Friday, Oliseh said the coaches were gradually getting to know the ability of every player aspiring to play for the team, regretting that some of them have not lived up to expectations.
He said: “We are continuing to know our team more and more and I think there are some of the players who cannot fit into our level. So, we will go back to look at those who can give us what we want.”

Oliseh was not particularly pleased with, midfielder, Rabiu Ibrahim, who came in as a substitute and was removed shortly after.
It turned out that Ibrahim was nursing an injury that hampered his movement during the game.
“We discovered that he had an injury and he did not let us know. The least you can do is to let your coaches know what is happening to you,” Oliseh said.

Nigeria will meet Swaziland in the second leg of the World Cup tomorrow with the winner qualifying to enter the group stage of the Russia 2018 qualifying series.

Shortly after the goal less draw in Lobambo, Swaziland Coach, Harris Bulunga, boasted that his team will get the result they need to qualify for the group stage, citing their impressive away record to buttress his point.
But Oliseh dismisses such ‘dreams’, saying the Eagles are far too superior to Swaziland.
“He has every right to dream, but I want to assure you that we will see the real Eagles in Port Harcourt. Our mission is to qualify for the World Cup and they cannot stop us.”

[b]Oliseh, a coach bedevilled by fallouts and controversies

It was not good viewing or good news that the Super Eagles could not defeat Swaziland in the first leg of their FIFA 2018 World Cup match on Friday, but reports from the Eagles camp say that there has been another fallout between Sunday Oliseh and one of his players.

So it seems Super Eagles manager, Oliseh, will continue to have his tenure as head of the national team dogged by various controversies. The fallout of his first match away to Tanzania was the replacement of Lukman Haruna after 36 minutes.

When the team went to Belgium for friendly matches – Vincent Enyeama retired. After the match against Cameroon, Emmanuel Emenike announced his retirement.

On the call-ups for the match against Swaziland, Oliseh was ‘forced’ to include Kelechi Iheanacho in the list after initially leaving the in-form Manchester City forward out. He then admitted that he had been watching the youngster.

On Wednesday last week, Oliseh said he was not in support of any Code of Conduct document to be signed by his players – a statement which could cause some infraction with his employers, the Nigeria Football Federation.

And now it seems another player, Rabiu Ibrahim, has bitten the dust. Reports from Lobamba after Friday’s match said the coach was pretty miffed at the midfielder’s performance and made this known sternly in the dressing room.

Ibrahim, sent on for Sylvester Igbonu at the beginning of the second half was taken out 21 minutes afterwards, ostensibly for not following the coach’s instructions.

But Ibrahim was said to have tried to absolve himself of blame which led to a series of hot exchanges between the player and his coach. It was also revealed that some senior players took a clearly distraught Ibrahim to Oliseh’s room to “beg” [just like Lukman is begging for another chance] but the former Super Eagles captain is said to have refused to entertain any discussion.

With this latest bust-up, the coach is not setting a good precedent and because of this, some players might start making excuses not to join up with the national team as it has invariably become a ‘threat zone’.

Sometimes these guys make me laugh hard.

So Rabiu should have told you?? Look, I'm not defending Rabiu ok.

This is my point:

The Senior national team is a place where things ought to be done "professionally".

The Super Eagles team have a "TEAM DOCTOR and other medical personnels". Didn't they "physically assess these players?? Or did they assume all were fit??

Fit or not..... They should be "physically" assessed on arrival in camp and before/after the team's final session(s) before a game.

Is that too much to ask??

Na wa o!!!

Abeg, let's get things right and do things "professionally". The senior national team is no boy-scout bootcamp.

Do you know some knocks can't be revealed physical assessments?

Also if the national team is trully a place where things are done 'professionally', then Rabiu Ibrahim ough to have informed the Coaches about his physical fitness issues.

How on earth would any reasonable and professional player want to earn his Coaches respect and confidence by such act of deliberate indiscipline?

Mikel was even a threat to them going forward. No wonder one of their players got injured and was taken off trying to tackle Mikel.

Ikeme: I’m Just Being Myself, Not Replacing Enyeama

Super Eagles goalkeeper Carl Ikeme has stated that he never found it difficult replacing for skipper Vincent Enyeama as first choice.

Speaking to FIFA.com, the Wolverhampton Wanderers goal tender, who is expected to be in goal when the Eagles face Swaziland on Tuesday, said the thought of living up to expectations, and not trying to emulate anybody has been is motivation.

"I wouldn’t say it was difficult. I was always aware that Vincent’s been the No1, captain and been an unbelievable goalkeeper for Nigeria, probably one of the best African keepers to ever play the game," Ikeme told FIFA.com.

"I don’t really want to try and emulate someone else. I want to do it my own way and be the best I can be. I know people always want to compare goalkeepers to each other, but I’m just trying to concentrate on what I do and do the best for Nigeria."

Ikeme expressed his delight that his decision to play for Nigeria has brought pride to his family.

"The thing that meant the most to me was how much it made my family proud – they were ecstatic.

It made me feel really good that all my family in Nigeria were proud of me for representing my country. My granddad passed away a few years ago as well, so it was a good feeling to put the Nigeria shirt on knowing that he was looking down on me.

"The experience itself gives you a bit of confidence to know you’ve played international football and played against some of the best players in the world. It makes you believe you can play at this level, especially if you do well it gives you a bit of a boost.

"We’ve got some top talent in the team and when you’re playing with [John Obi] Mikel and [Ahmed] Musa it gives you a bit of confidence to say you can play on the same team with these people and you belong at the level. It gives you another goal as well to want to be a part of the next [squad]."

The 29-year-old, who went on to relieve his first time in the Eagles dressing room, revealed that former German Coach Berti Vogts actually sent him his first invitation to the Eagles in 2007.

"I got invited into the squad (in 2007 by Berti Vogts) and got injured before the squad was due to meet up, so I couldn’t join up.

So it was unfortunate I didn’t get to get started a bit earlier. I suppose everything happens for a reason though, so it was probably my time to come in when I did."

"It’s pretty strange (first experience in the Eagles dressing room) really because, you know, I’m not a kid. You don’t know too many of the players. It’s not nerve-wracking, but it’s a bit first-day-of-school-like. You try to get to know people and build a sort of relationship, but you’re also trying to impress the coaches at the same time and prove to everyone that you should be there."

Nigeria's quest to win the 2016 African Nations Championship will no be an easy task, warns Enyimba midfielder, Kingsley Sokari.

The Eagles are grouped alongside Tunisia, Guinea and Niger for the tournament for players in their domestic leagues on the continent.

Sokari who was recently dropped from the U-23 Eagles team preparing for the CAF U-23 Cup of Nations to be held in Senegal spoke to Comple tesportsnigeria.com on Nigeria's chances to lift the trophy in Rwanda.

He said: "The tournament in Rwanda will not be an easy one. We (Super Eagles) are in a very tough group.

"Tunisia have a very strong league, as competitive as what you will find here in Nigeria or other big leagues in Africa.

Everyone knows I would have been playing there. Guinea also have a good team. We cannot also rule out Niger springing some surprises at the tournament because the so-called 'minnows' can spoil things for teams."

Speaking further on the subject of underestimating the threatsof the lesser footballing nations in Africa, Sokari added: "Every game is different. As a player, what I can say is that for some teams, they could underrate a supposedly smaller opponent which is over-confidence or for some others, their poor results against teams they are expected to defeat could be as a result of poor pitches.
"We must take our opponents seriously in the tournament."

The 2016 CHAN holds between January 16 to February 7, 2016.

Nigeria: 2018 World Cup Qualifiers - Super Eagles 'Sneak' Into Port Harcourt

Egypt's 1-0 defeat in Ndjamena against Chad was certainly an upset.

By Tunde Eludini
The Super Eagles are back from Lobambo; where they played a disappointing 0-0 draw against a lowly rated Swaziland team in the 2018 World Cup qualifying series.

The Eagles, who travelled on an Arik Air Boeing 737-800, flew straight to Port Harcourt, the venue of Tuesday's return leg and must-win clash against the Swazis.

The arrival of the Eagles was confirmed via the official twitter handle of the team and the players are expected to get down to business immediately.

"We have arrived safely in Port Harcourt. We thank God for journey mercies. Preparations begin in earnest for Tuesday's 2nd leg vs Swaziland," the tweet read.

The winner over two legs between the two teams will progress to the next phase of the 2018 World Cup qualifying series.

Having qualified for the 1994, 1998, 2002, 2010 and 2014 editions of the World Cup, Nigeria is seeking her sixth berth at the Mundial.

Meanwhile the Swaziland Coach is already mapping out how his team can pull another upset here in Nigeria even though the Eagles have the edge at home.

"We will now be hoping for a scored draw in Nigeria on Tuesday to advance in the competition, but honestly Nigeria have a 60-40 chance of beating us to the next round," the coach said.

Nigeria vs Swaziland: Oliseh backs Super Eagles to soar after dour first leg

By Dom Farrell
Nigeria were held to a dispiriting 0-0 draw by Swaziland on Friday but Sunday Oliseh remains confident of World Cup qualification progress
Sunday Oliseh believes his Nigeria players are ready to put a lacklustre outing in Swaziland behind them as they aim to secure a place in the group stage of Africa's World Cup qualifying section.

Despite being widely expected to defeat the team ranked 130th in the world in Friday's first leg on the artificial turf of the Somholo National Stadium, Nigeria returned home with a goalless draw to take into Tuesday's return.

"It was a game that we went all out to win," former Ajax and Borussia Dortmund midfielder Oliseh told Super Sport.

"Unfortunately, we didn't get that but we thank God that at least we have made everything open for ourselves to just win on Tuesday and qualify.

"We want to qualify and we will be going all out to win. So far, I have been impressed with the boys and the intensity of training.

"Hopefully, we get the win that we will be pushing for on Tuesday."

Oliseh has decisions to make up front, after recalled forward Obafemi Martins and Manchester City youngster Kelechi Iheanacho – the latter on his full international debut – came off the bench to revitalise Nigeria's attacking efforts in Lobamba.

The coach must also do without Rabiu Ibrahim, the midfielder who limped out of the action on Friday due to a knee injury after coming on as a half-time substitute.

"Yes, he has been ruled out. He will not play," Oliseh confirmed. "Rabiu got onto the pitch and unfortunately hurt his knee after a few minutes.

"He felt some pain and I thought it wise to substitute him. Ordinarily, he would have finished the game.

"It was saddening because it destabilized our [final] push. We wanted to win the game."
Despite overseeing a home performance overwhelmingly focused on defence, Swaziland coach Harris Bulunga hinted towards a more expansive approach in the second leg after being unimpressed by Nigeria's own attacking intent.

"Yes, of course we were playing at home, the first half we wanted to see how they came to meet us but we discovered that they were not that aggressive," Bulunga said, as quoted by Nigerian newspaper the Nation.

"It is not about them in their home because a score draw can put us through."
Bulunga will run the rule over Felix Badenhorst, Micolisi Lukhele and Mthunzi Mkhontfo after the trio were substituted as a precaution during the first match.

He added: "If the players who got some knocks and had to be substituted will be available, then I will give my team a 40 per cent chance of getting an upset result in Nigeria."

Football injuries are normally detectable by "overall physical assessments". E.g. Hamstrings, Hernias, Ligament injuries and muscle tears

Physical assessments does not just include checking a player in your office and letting him go. It also involves taking that player to the field and checking his physical conditioning. His response to certain movements and his overall mobility.

Rabiu was wrong to hide it. But what if he went on to score that day?? And the media reveals he did so with injury? Every one will hail him as "patriotic". Maybe he just wanted to play/contribute despite the injury. Maybe he thought he could manage it but sadly it didn't work out.

Rabiu was definitely wrong but hey! What if his reasons were "patriotic"?? **smiles** crazy right?

My whole point is this:

Rabiu's was an ankle problem (according to reports..... Hope I'm right) and there's no way "a thorough and super complete physical assessment" as I described above won't "unveil" this.

Some other "subtle" cases may require MRI, CT or PET. But an ankle problem can be picked up if the doctors did a "complete job" of checking their "physical conditioning".

I insist that Oliseh and his medical team didn't "totally" check the physical conditioning of these players.

NOTE: PLAYERS MAY NOT ALWAYS BE HONEST AS REGARDS THEIR FITNESS
.

terzurum5:

Do you know some knocks can't be revealed physical assessments?

Also if the national team is trully a place where things are done 'professionally', then Rabiu Ibrahim ough to have informed the Coaches about his physical fitness issues.

How on earth would any reasonable and professional player want to earn his Coaches respect and confidence by such act of deliberate indiscipline?

You are well come Sir Mikron.
Nice to drag you back to the thread out of your tight schedules.

The Swazis want to bite more than they can chew. I just pray Oliseh designs the right match plan that will enable the Super Eagles to disgrace them tomorrow.

I pray for a harvest of goals tomorrow.

Ahmed Musa of Nigeria beats Mkhweli Sanlele of Swaziland in Lobambo

by Samm Audu
Super Eagles of Nigeria are condemned to beat Swaziland on Tuesday in Port Harcourt to advance to the league stage of the qualifying tournament for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.

Swaziland held star-studded Nigeria to a scoreless draw in the first-ever meeting between the two teams on Friday in Lobambo.

Tuesday’s kick-off is 4pm Nigerian time at the Adokie Amiesimaka Stadium in Port Harcourt.

The Southern Africans were resolute in defence and limited their more famous opponents to just a handful of chances for their enthusiastic fans to later celebrate a confidence-boosting draw.

The Eagles midfield again lacked creativity and so forcing the strikers like Odion Ighalo and Obafemi Martins to fall back deep to be part of the game.

Swaziland coach Harries Bulunga said his team are still capable of upsetting the three-time African champions in front of their own fans.

“We still believe. Our defence was superb (in the first leg), but we were not that sharp upfront,” Bulunga said.

“We’re underdogs, no one expects us to win, but we can fight against the big dogs.

“It will be difficult to stop them from scoring especially as they are playing at home. They will come at us, most of their stars did not shine as expected, and so they will now want to impress.

“We will be patient, but we will stop them because my boys are determined even though they are not professionals.”

Nigeria coach Sunday Oliseh admitted his team were not at their best in Swaziland.

“We can’t give any excuses, we did not bring out ‘A’ game to the pitch,” he said.

Captain Ahmed Musa said they will step up their game to guarantee their passage to the next round of the qualifiers.

“We are home and we will do much more and that means Swaziland have to be ready for us,” said the CSKA Moscow forward.

"We have put the draw in Swaziland behind us, that is in the past. We know the importance of this second leg, what we need is victory, that we are going for and that we will get to progress in the qualifiers."

Swaziland are set to miss two starters from last week’s 0-0 draw - Mbabane Swallows attacking midfielder Felix Badenhorst is nursing a hamstring after he suffered a cut that needed stitches in the game and Royal Leopards Simunye midfielder Mxolisi Lukhele has a shoulder complaint.

Nigeria midfielder Rabiu Ibrahim is nursing a knee injury and he is not likely to start as Oliseh plans to ring some changes for this clash.

Eagles skipper Ahmed Musa - Will Swaziland stop him again?

by Samm Audu
Swaziland coach Harries Bulunga has revealed they plan to stop Super Eagles skipper Ahmed Musa in a 2018 World Cup qualifier return leg in Port Harcourt on Tuesday.

Hosts Swaziland recorded a confidence-boosting 0-0 draw with mighty Nigeria on Friday and they hope they could again shut the three-time African champions in the reverse fixture.

Ahmed Musa has been flying with his Russian army club CSKA Moscow this season, scoring goals in both the UEFA Champions League and the league, but little Swaziland shut him out in the first encounter and the Swaziland coach said they could do that again in Nigeria

“Ahmed Musa is very dangerous, so too (Odion) Ighalo and even (Obafemi) Martins with his experience. We will stop them as a team and not as individuals because they can hurt you from all angles,” said Bulunga

“We still believe. Our defence was superb (in the first leg), but we were not that sharp upfront.

“It will be difficult to stop them from scoring especially as they are playing at home. They will come at us, most of their stars did not shine as expected, and so they will now want to impress.

“We will be patient, but we will stop them because my boys are determined even though they are not professionals.”
