Enyimba on course for Super Four title

Posted: 2010-08-07 08:39

Enyimba overcame a missed penalty and going a goal behind to put themselves within one point of victory at the Super Four with a 2-1 win over Kwara United on Friday.

In the day's early game, 10-man Sunshine Stars claimed the scalp of league runners-up Kano Pillars with a 1-0 win.

Enyimba now only need to avoid defeat against Pillars in their final game on Sunday to claim their second trophy of the year.

But that did not look a likely scenario when Philip Auta struck a tame penalty into the hand of Kwara keeper Wasiu Ibrahim.

The Afonja Warriors were happy enough with the reprieve and duly took advantage through Kabiru Sanusi on the stroke of half time.

With defeat looming, Okey Emordi threw on David Tyavkase, Henry Uche and Rasheed Olaniyi and the subs masterminded a siege on the Kwara area.

Reward took a while in coming, but it did 20 minutes before the end when Ekene Iwuorie turned in Kenneth Anyanwau's free kick.

The defender was on hand to claim the winner when he volleyed home from opposite fullback Ofem Inah's diagonal cross.

And Atanda Sakibu had a chance to make the margin of victory even greater, only to fluff his lines from six yards out.

Barribote: ‘Bayelsa Not Relegated!’

Chairman of Nigeria Premier League side Bayelsa United, Rumson Barribote, has disclosed that the club have not been relegated to the lower division despite media reports to the contrary.

Bayelsa emerged champions of the NPL two seasons ago but last term they struggled to make headway.

The league standings show that Bayelsa finished 18th on 47 points from 38 matches, but Barribote maintained that an abandoned game versus Wikki Tourist of Bauchi is still under dispute.

“The match was abandoned after 80 minutes and instead of the NPL to award the three points and three goals to the visiting team, in this case Bayelsa United, they ordered a replay,” said Barribote.

“We were prepared to play this replay until the NPL again ordered we play the game less than the mandatory 48 hours after our last match.

“It is very clear to see that all these decisions are politically motivated and some people at the NPL simply want to ensure they give Barribote a bad name so as to hang him.”

However, the Bayelsa boss insisted that he will fight on until justice is done and his club retain their place in the top flight.

“We all have to go by the rule of law and when this is done, Bayelsa will get justice,” he said.

Enyimba topped the just concluded NPL with Kano Pillars finishing as runners-up.

Ranch Bees of Kaduna, Gateway FC of Abeokuta, Wikki as well as Bayelsa are designated for demotion after finishing within the bottom four of the championship.

The NPL general assembly will ratify the league standings before the commencement of the new season slated for September.

How NPL ran league without sponsor

George Akpayen Email: gakpayen009@yahoo.com, 08066669355

Nigeria Premier League (NPL) faced one of its difficult seasons in the last campaign when it was run without money from its title sponsor, Globacom Nigeria Limited, according to Naijaligue..com.

NPL had expected to pocket N900 million from its title sponsor, but was stunned when the company withdrew its interest last December with just few months to the end of a four-year deal. Immediate past Premier League Executive Secretary, Alhassan Yakmut, disclosed that the league body used a little close to N300 million in running cost for the 2009/2010 season.

He described the situation as pathetic, especially when he took charge of the secretariat in the absence of a board when the tenure of the former NPL Chairman, Oyuki Obaseki’s, administration elapsed in March this year.

“We had a budget of about N1 billion, which included money to be given to the 20 clubs as grant. But all that became money on paper since our sponsor couldn’t meet their obligation to the NPL. “However, the league needed to continue and I must say that the league was ran on about N300 million; which meant that we had to sacrifice a whole lot of areas for the game,” he said.

The ex-NPL scribe, who has been redeployed to the Sports Ministry also known as the National Sports Commission (NSC), disclosed that some of the funds used for last season belonged to players owed by their previous employers.

He cited an instance of the Association of Professional Footballers of Nigeria (APFON) reporting the Premier League to Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over the money belonging to Joseph Eyimofe and Ochuko Ojobo.

NPL got N6.5 million for both players, formerly with Sharks Football Club, but had to expend it on administrative cost.

Yakmut explained: “Nobody wanted to take the players’ money as APFON made it look. Also, I wanted to make them realise that it wasn’t me that took the money but it was NPL since we thought wise to do so. It would have been foolhardy to have disbursed the funds at that time to the players when in actual fact it could help save the careers of more than 600 to 700 players taking part in the league.

“Remember that referees’ indemnities, overhead cost in the NPL secretariat that includes staff salaries among others are issues we couldn’t overlook. Hence, the money to these players had to be used with a promise that it will be paid in a later date rather than throw the league into chaos and leave more than 600 to 700 players jobless.”

Wow, well how they managed to make the league go on without money is kinda incredible, all the same, they had money from glo before, they can't tell me they spent all.

As for glo, they can go to hell, they can as well go sponsor not just Manchester Utd, but also the rest top 3 teams in England.

The league will definitely survive and i pray that someone like Dangote comes in to sponsor the league or even Etisalat.

why does lagos not have a football club

Because they all ran out of Lagos, they think Lagos is jinxed.

But we still have clubs, they are mostly in Div1, 2 and 3
Re: Nigerian League Fan Thread: Enter D Place N Know Every by cj24: 11:55am On Aug 08, 2010
There is a study that sport leagues never had financial stability until major cities had teams with solid corporate base , media explosion, and huge population.

Some one is currently working on bringing a team to Lagos that will be a global brand in the next five years. This is his pitch

PROFILE: Today, you move around every street, city, state of Nigeria and even the entire African landscape, all you breathe in is the love and passion of football displayed by all income earners. Although in Nigeria, people love their national team but in terms of their club football, foreign football is highly consumed, but ten years ago it was different because when Nigeria’s most supported football club Stationery stores of Lagos city is to play a match. The whole city is fired up, traffic jams along the roads with approximately 80000 fans moving three hours before the kickoff, intense media campaign; fan argument about the game and the local economy is also active. WHAT HAPPENED?

PROBLEM: Mismanagement of football business in Nigeria. SOLUTION: As a result of a change drive, CJ ENTERPRISES has come up with a project that adds value to Nigeria football which will indeed change the poor image of African football.

PROCESS: Establishment of a football club that people can be proud to support, wear their jerseys, go out with their family on match days, be a part of their lives in Lagos city since its most supported club STATIONERY STORES [most supported club in Nigeria history] is currently demise due to ownership crises after the death of the founder since it was less operated as a business.

WHY LAGOS: Population of 18 million people, Highest capacity football fans in Nigeria, capital of football in Nigeria, Solid corporate base, business capital of Nigeria, for supply of commercial funds, Media capital of Nigeria, Therefore the fundamental are already in place of a ready and prepared market.
However for this club to take Nigerian football to a new dawn a lot of things has to be improved and they are:

INFRASTRUCTURE: Efficient, attractive and comfortable stadium with good security system for my customers

MARKETING: Lot of people [customer] needs to be aware and involved in the club and every of its activities.

MEDIA: There has to be a synergy between the club and the media since it is now a media business and most importantly

BRAND DEVELOPMENT: Substantial components in the marketing of the club to make it attractive to customers who in this dynamic industry are very vocal, proud, exposed to global brands, because they want to flaunt their clubs to upgrade their image which calls for you to have an exceptional brand. Most importantly fans are creators and created by word of mouth of mouth marketing that can tear apart your business or enhance your business success. This makes a good reason why our strategy for this business with our analysis of business environment is
:

STRATEGY: HIGH BRAND VALUE SYSTEM
This is because apart from maximizing profits, our Basic OBJECTIVE: To be a global brand in African soccer perspectives within the next five years.

POSSIBILITY: However when It believes Lagos city football club intends being a global brand in the next five years, It is basically more than imagination because not every football club has the potential of being a global brand. All football clubs in the world that are global brands are major clubs in major and densely populated cities, for example Milan of Italy has Ac and Inter Milan, Madrid has real Madrid, Barcelona has F.C Barcelona, London has Arsenal and Chelsea, even in Africa Cairo has AHLY and ZAMALEK.

Also winning the Nigeria premier League [Local dominance] which qualifies us to enter and win the Africa champions league [African brand which qualifies you to enter and win the Ultimate prized FIFA CLUB WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP [global brand].

Therefore definitely with our management system, marketing and financial strategies in my business plan we will be building a profitable asset and business model that will be sustained.

This is true because when the federationn cup was brought to Lagos, we saw the effect was a sponsorship package why was onced dropped. It brought life to it

NBA CANT DO WITHOUT LOS ANGELES MARKET, LA LIGA CAN NOT DO WITHOUT MADRID AND BARCELONA MARKET, ENGLISH LEAGUE CAN NOT DO WITHOUT MANCHESTER AND LONDON MARKET, ITALIAN SERIE A CANNOT DO WITHOUT MILAN AND ROME MARKET. EVEN EQYPTIAN LEAGUE CANNOT DO WITHOUT CAIRO MARKET WHICH HAS AH AHLY AND ZAMALEK. THIS IS A PROVEN STUDY .

stop reposting, it will show up soon and to be honest i really dont see why you are bringing your business proposal herewhy dont you contact the NPL and other footballers

the clubs you just posted were not given automatic rights to be in the premier league or top divisions they qualified from lower leagues or were part of the founding leagues, if a club from lagos cant make it to the top division then tough they will have to do what other clubs do, play and gain points and your point about a missing lagos club is holding the league back is not strong enough!ig the Lagos clubs in the lower division cant get sponsorship packaging now to bring in best players who will take them to the premier league then i dont see how a Lagos team can add considerable amount of exposure or sponsorship to the league, they might be more fans in the stadium but probably more violence also = less sponsorship!

cj24 one more Question, what have you done before?

Re: Nigerian League Fan Thread: Enter D Place N Know Every by cj24: 7:54pm On Aug 08, 2010
I am just looking at the commercial benefits of the league which I believe will be more realistic when you have more fans at the stadium which have propensity to attract an unflinching media exposure which then attract the sponsorship. It is easier to attract 40000 per match from 18 million people.

The financial success affects the playing philosophy. This is how the football market works every where. I see why commercially the league is at a loss.

Football has a market now and a system, Newcastle might not be among the big four in the english league but listen they have the largest sponsorship package behind the newly man utd AON deal.

SO pls disGUY talk business because the sport you watch on tv is now a business.

So many sport teams struggle to have their teams in the right markets like the phillies and patriots ll fighting to have their franchises in the new york and Los angeles market.

I am not suprised, we have a lot to learn in sport business. This is why you see all European teams which are your clubs: Manu utd, chelsea, AC milan, Barcelona all running to open up the united states of America market which is critical for sports. you see it is first a business then it influences sporting success. Thanks

and how do you expect to get promotion from the Amateur league (div3) to the NPL?

What do you have on ground to run a club in Nigeria?

And how do you intend making your club a worldclass club within 5 years? Lagos state has a new club (since 2007) and they are still in div 3 for three years now. what do you want to do that Fashola's club (eko fc) is yet to do?

What is likely going to make you salient from the likes of Union bank, First bank, Egbedie UTD and other clubs in lagos struggling to break into the NPL for years now??

Enyimba are pretty much on course for a treble this season. They have won the league, Super4 and they are also in the final of the FA cup, to play Kaduna United. I know they would have done well on the continent if only they had taken things seriously. I wonder why a club will prosecute a continental tie with only 15 players. They would have been aiming for a quadripple now. Anyway, congrats to Enyimba and its fans
