To all in the fta arena.
Greetings of the moment to u all out there doing great job in signal tracking bussiness. I commend ur effort all.
Spaceman is back 4rm space, and I can see u guys hv penetrated so much to tap signals. D result of ur tracking is an indication of d sensitivity, right use/selection of ur equipment, and hw meticulous u are in ur search.
Great job done anyway.
Kudos to u oga Twinstaiye 4 ur moderation. Season 3 is equally nice in contribution.
I shall be more regular in ds season. Promise!

Assuming i procured a dstv decoder in Ghana or elsewhere out side nigeria with the intention of using it here , would i receive the same services or do they have as security that stop's it from working

so long as d dx is not configured for any particular service in ghana, I mean if its a universal dx, as blank as it its manufactured, it will work once u use a card dwn here.
Its just like u takin ur gsm phone 2 Ghana and buying a ghanian netwrk /sin card and slot 4 use. Notin stops it 4rm working!

F_Marshal:

Remember, the LNB MUST have a dual out put for it to work.

Not necessarily. You could use a multi switch with multiple lnbs too. The goal is for you to be able
to watch more than one channels at the same time without conflict.

Lets say I have 3 dishes. One pointing to intelsat 7/10, the second to Eutelsat w3a and the third
Sirius 4 all connected through a diseqc switch to a reciever in the parlour and I'm living in a two or
three bedroom flat. Instead of just looping out the RF output of my decoder in the parlour to the other
other TVs in the rooms, I might decide to pass the output of the diseqc switch through a multi switch
to the TV in the parlour and those of the other rooms. Why is that? What is special in this arrangement?

Now, this is the difference: If I decide to pass the output of the RF port from the decoder to the TVs
in the other rooms, I can only watch whatever channel is on in the parlour (this is the most common
arrangement in many homes with FTA). But if I decide that I need freedom to watch any channel
independent of what is being watched in the parlour, I have to pass the output of the diseqc switch
through a multi switch to another decoder in my room. So that, while the children are watching, e.g, baby tv
channel (from Intelsat 7/10), I can be on any other channel, e.g, ETV-HYDE-PARK (from sirius 4) in my room.
If I decide to forgo the multiswitch and  pass the output of the diseqc through an ordinary two or 4-way splitter to my decoder in the room what I get is conflict between channels with horizontal or vertical
polarities. The decoder in the parlour becomes the 'master' decoder and those in the rooms become the
'slaves'. So, if the decoder in the parlour is on a channel with horizontal polarity, e.g, baby tv (intelsat 7/10),
the other ones in the rooms cannot recieve any channel on vertical polarity except you power off the master reciever in the parlour.

To avoid this kind of conflict, you need a multi switch so you can watch channels of different polarities
independent of each other.

As long as you can see and receive the satellite it will work.
Your card dictate you services you would receive.
Your card may also dictate which local station you would receive.
I know people use to have GTV service from Ghana in Lagos.

@chuk101,
Why would you like to entangle yourself with a paytv service like DSTV?
We in this forum are made up of people who have at one time or the other
have our fingers burnt by the shylock tendencies of that provider. We have since
learnt that 90% of the crap being peddled by services like that can be gotten
free from space. With a little bit of knowledge and the right equipment, you
can save yourself the agony of being a perpetual money tree to DSTV and their
types. It is the search for such knowledge that brought most of us to this forum.
Therefore it will be a disservice and a set back on the purpose of this thread to
give you guidelines which will help you to achive the very oppsite of satellite
freedom.
If you ask me, I'd say to forget about DSTV and think more on how to get for
yourselve all or most of those channels that make them tick. And, I assure you,
they can be gotten for free.
Re: Official Thread of Free-to- Air Satellite TV [part 3] by LagosSky(m): 12:09pm On Mar 27, 2009
George_D;

The output of the RF port from the decoder gives you the same TV channel being watched on that decoder.
The output of the LOOP BACK port from the decoder gives you the same polarity being used on the decoder.
You would have to have an LNB with two out put (i.e. duel LNB ) on the antenna two get the Horizontal and Vertical output (one from each output) and fed to a switch and then the decoder s programmed to pick up the horizontal/vertical from the correct port.
I have this set up at my place. I have one antenna that picks up the vertical of PAS7/10 and another horizontal ( I did not find duel output C-ban LNB) and the vertical is shared with my other neighbors who are using DSTV c-band via a dstv splitter box.
Let me know if this is clear. You need a duel LNB to get totally independent output.
Re: Official Thread of Free-to- Air Satellite TV [part 3] by GeorgeD1(m): 12:25pm On Mar 27, 2009
@LagosSky,
You're saying exactly the same thing F-Marshal said and which I tried to clarify with my long post above.
With a dual output lnb, the need for a multiswitch becomes less important. You can always configure
two recievers with different polarities to recieve all the channels without conflict. And you don't need a
multiswitch to do that.

For a multi lnb set up (with single output each), you need a multi switch connected after the diseqc switch
output to the diffrent receivers if you want to watch the birds indipendently.
Re: Official Thread of Free-to- Air Satellite TV [part 3] by BUTONEDAY(m): 3:10pm On Mar 27, 2009
@ All
If you want to connect more receivers to your dish you need a multiswitch. Please see attached photo.

Re: Official Thread of Free-to- Air Satellite TV [part 3] by BUTONEDAY(m): 3:18pm On Mar 27, 2009
@ All,
When connecting 2 LNB's to 4 Receivers you require (2pcs) 3x4 Multi-switches. Remember to set the correct DiSEqC ports in each receiver .For multi-LNB setups, add a 3x4 Multi-switch for each additional LNB. See photo

George_D, This is a simple matter. Your three SAT example cannot be achieved if the LNBs only have a single output. For you to achieve what you're looking for you need ( I say it again) LNB with a DUAL output connected to a multi- switch or  2 4X1 DiseqC switches with each ouput going to Receivers in your palour and Bedroom. Another method is using a Band Stacked LNB, that uses the "One Cable System or OCS"  method which I doubt you do and connected to a multi-switch. Remember, to use a BandStacked LNB, your Receiver must be OCS capable. If you do what you have been theorizing above, there will be a conflict. Period!!!!  Look at the diagrams by BUTONEDAY and LagosSky as guides. I hope this helps.

@olofofo,
I'm sure you meant to say 'george_d' instead of 'chuks101'. But all the same I was expecting
someone to raise the issue of cost.
We all know that DSTV, MYTV, HITV, and all these other paytv services are nothing more than
a concentration of FTA channels sourced from different satellites scartered all over space.
They bring in these channels into thier own bouquet and what you enjoy as a subscriber is
the convienience of having these many channels in a concentrated beam which can be picked
with a small dish 90cm or less.
But the question you should ask yourself is: Is it really worth it paying all this money just to
have someone sort out these FTA stations for you? Can't you do it yourself and keep the
change? Why should I pay N9,000 monthly (N108,000 yearly) for something I can get free with
a little imagination? Talking of cost, which is cheaper, spending a one off amount of less than
N40, 000 to get a motorised system which brings in all these stations for you free (for life) or
spending 108K yearly (and the subscription keeps going up every year) just for convienience?
Your guess is as good as mine.
bit of knowlege and

Nice work George d,
Actually i have that at the back of my mind, i started with pas 7/10 on ku band , later i graduated to c band motorised, right now i have 3 ku band set ups and my motorised c band, like u said free for life, dstv and hitv and mytv are all rip offs i know and i understand perfectly well, i am not doing it for my own consumption , could u believe that in most homes people have almost the three networks and they pay for it, so my research is on how to get one network that can do the job of 3 on a ku band 90 cm dish max, because lots of people here are tenants and they like competition, therefore if the dstv rest of africa works here there is a possibility that they might like the idea, for me i am looking for a way to link to nilesat, recently someone offered me a starsat decoder at the rate of 10k but i declined because i do not have nilesat i hope to nail that bird in future, but as u know i am in the south and i need a big i mean very big dish
