Irawo15,
Thanks for appreciating d knowledge made available to you on this blog.
Concerning your Issues, everyone experiences low moods from time to time and become withdrawn.
but when you begin to feel tired of living or always withdrawn or having other personality changes, that's tending towards depression particularly if they occur frequently or have persisted for over 2 weeks without abating. Then u need to worry...
U need to look inwards n identify those things happening in your life that are responsible for these feelings n address them
but if you can't, then i would advise you seek medical help.
Meanwhile try not to take out your frustrations on the kids.
When u do feel that way, try and avoid been quick to react to issues cos you may over react and later have regrets.
Like I said earlier, you may need to seek help which may just be psychotherapy sessions and u would be able to cope better with your challenges.

Dear Doc, just when I wanted to publish my son's problem to seek for help, I found your post. My son is 25 yrs. We discovered during his early years that he was withdrawn. He didnt play with his mates. He wouldnt tell u anything unless u asked him. So we concluded he is an introvert. But now he has gotten worse. He refuses to eat unless u force him. He wouldnt take his bath unless u tell him. His room always untidy. He can sit from morning till night without saying a word. He does not initiate discussions. Sometimes he smiles to himself. He's always moody, keeping a straight emotionless face.
He behaves like a child without wisdom. He can sleep from morning till night. We have gone to a specialist hospital & schizophrenia was diagnosed. Risperdal 2mg was prescribed but there is no improvement. It appears to be getting worse. Pls doc what can we do? Sorry for my long epistle.

Good morning Mr wakabout,
After reading the first 3 lines in your first paragraph, I was already making a diagnosis of schizophrenia.
But I can't conclude yet...
As a young child, how was He? Withdrawn? Showing Emotions? Weird? Interacting less with people? How was his behaviours at school and with Peers? Did he show emotions to family members? How was his communications from about 4/5 years?
What are u referring to as early Years?
At what age did u start observing these Behaviours?
When did he start neglecting his personal hygiene?
Apart from laughing to self, do u see him talking to self Sometimes?
Any aggression?
What do you mean by he behaves like a child without wisdom Explain Better!
how has his academic been over the years?
Do u reside in Lagos? Can I see Him?
If it schizophrenia, there are various types n d type determines d prognosis
u said something major, he is on drugs n appears to be getting worse...
If I see and assess, I would be able to conclude on diagnosis n type if schiz, change /modify medications if need be and also advise u better.

Re: Psychiatric Doctor In The House: Advise On Psychological And Mental Health Issue by wakabout(m): 9:04am On Aug 20, 2015
As a young child he was withdrawn, no emotions, in fact, u got the exact description in your response. He was not so good at school. He managed to get admission to the university on part time, but had to withdraw him at 300 level when he was not doing well and his condition seemed to be worsening. We started to notice his weird behaviour at about 5yrs. he had no single friend, even uptil now. he doesnt make phone calls and no one calls his number. His personal hygiene started to suffer some 5-7 yrs ago. He only smiles once in a while, no aggression. He doesnt talk to himself. What I mean by behaving like a child without wisdom is this attitude of not taking the initiative to do things for himself, talk less for others. This morning when I entered his room, there were clothes scattered all over the place. He wouldn't sleep on his bed, prefers sleeping on the floor, saying the bed gives him pains. We reside in Lagos and would be glad to see you. God bless u sir.

NayaNdupu:
Amethyst,
Slow in learning does not translate to autism.
Autism is a condition which affects speech, communication n relationship
Various reasons why an individual could be slow in learning include intellectual deficit, learning disorders, presence of other psychological conditions, genetic or chromosomal conditions like Downs syndrome, Turner syndrome, may even be hereditary amongst other causes ...
you need him to see a specialist early.
Its one thing to report your observations which is not enough...
That's why he needs to be evaluated n examined ASAP b4 it's too late to help him.
Thanks Sir! As per being hereditary, I don't know where he must have inherited that trait from. Cos all my Sisters graduated from reputable schools with enviable grades. Our parents, as far as I know ain't dullard. I really cannot say where & how he inherited that trait. Although, I'm not a science student and so I may not know much about 'Autism, down syndrome & the likes' but a little research on google shocked me about those stuffs. Like you suggested, I'll tell Mum to see a specialist. Thanks for your time Sir!

Drop your digit Sir and I'll get in touch. For me it will be more difficult to drop my digit online. I hope you'll understand why Sir? Or you probably give me your office address, I'll come and see you there.

I think it has to do with those around him too. If he finds it hard to learn and associate with others, then make everyone his friends. A doctor once told me to admit my sister's child in a noisy school which I did and has helped the boy a lot. Create opportunity for him to make more friends. You should be his best friend and try to understand him. Maybe this can help too http://globalhealthtip.com/improve-your-mental-ability-what-you-can-do/
what an interesting piece you shared with me. I'll finish reading it in no time, after which I'll get back to you to share my testimony.

Gud day doc,
I've been a silent observer of this thread and I need to share my story.
I have a phobia for hospitals, I can't remember when it started bt it's always bad.
Once I get to a hospital, I start having anxiety, I breath faster and my heart starts racing, my palms sweat and my hands shake uncontrollably.
Dr4, wen d vital statistics is taken it always shows dat my BP is high, but within me I know dat I'm not hypertensive it's just d phobia. As soon as I leave d hospital my body goes back to normal, d shaking stops and I start breathing normally.
I have changed hospitals because of ds issue, because d doc keeps on treating high BP dn gets tired and refers me to a physician.
I bought a digital gadget and at home I'll check it wen I'm alone it's always Ok, but at d hospital it's always bad.
Sorry for the long epistle, how can I be calm when in the hospital, I've tried many times to calm myself it does not work, I'm always afraid in the hospital, please help.

pls doctor I have a brother who is 26 years now nd has been mentally sick for 9 years now.it all started when he was young,he behaved so odd.he plays foolish plays not expected of someone of his age.he can't even do anything for himself but now he is being confined to d room because of hit restless nature.he hallucinates nd he likes being naked too.he was admitted at ubth where there was a little improvements. it has worsened now nd any time he exhibits his restlessness, he is being given a drug that makes him weak nd sleep. pls from dis story what can u device the problem is.
Re: Psychiatric Doctor In The House: Advise On Psychological And Mental Health Issue by NayaNdupu: 8:37pm On Sep 01, 2015
Missyelo,
You say your brother has been mentally ill for 9 years ie it started at about age 17 year? ?
In addition, there is a history or odd behaviours, age inappropriate plays, inability to help himself......
He was restless n hallucinate then you relatives complicated his condition by SOLITARY CONFINING HIM.
That's the worst punishment u can give to people with mental illness!!!
It's standard psychiatric concept that if u isolate people, they go insane.
Actions taken by you relatives have worsen his condition.
It possible that he may have had some developmental or childhood disorders which was not promptly managed n has led to more severe Psychotic disorder coexisting with the earlier problems.
That been said, it's appears he has some form of intellectual deficit, which could co exist with hyperactivity disorder in addition to having a Psychotic disorder.

doctor from what u have said abt my brother, what should we do now! taking him back to d psychiatric hospital or just giving him d drugs to take to avoid his restlessness. he has used both English nd native medicines all to no avail. pls help us doctor because dis is really affecting my parents as d only son.
Re: Psychiatric Doctor In The House: Advise On Psychological And Mental Health Issue by NayaNdupu: 9:22pm On Sep 02, 2015
You can't be giving both orthodox n native drugs.
I would advise you stick to psychiatric Hospital n their medications.
Also bear in mind that the prognosis may be poor.
All d best.

Healthcare Programs in South Africa
Why you need to belong to the health sector?

The world will be short of 12.9 million health-care workers by 2035; today, that figure stands at 7.2 million. If not addressed now it will have serious implications for the health of billions of people across all regions of the world.
- WHO Report Nov. 2013

In Africa, the impact of health workforce shortages is even more acute: half of urban residents lack access to health care due to health worker shortages, and a staggering 77% of rural residents lack essential health coverage, precisely because they are devoid of the health workers needed to serve their communities.
- ILO report May 2015

South African School of Nursing
Nursing is a career filled with endless personal and professional rewards. If you choose nursing, you are choosing to spend your life helping others, using skills that blend scientific knowledge with compassion and caring. There are few professions that offer such a rewarding combination of high tech and high touch. Registered nurses constitute the largest health care occupation, with 2.5 million jobs. About 59 percent of jobs are in hospitals.

Advantages of Studying in South Africa

Our Review of The Venus Factor – Does It Really Work?
One of the top weight-loss programs for women currently on the market, the Venus Factor combines healthy eating with a simpl

e daily workout regimen to help women recapture their natural body shape. The program follows alternative weight-loss methods that rely on the science of the female body to help the user reach their ideal weight quickly. Many diets can leave the user feeling worn out and tired without

producing any real results. While it may be possible to lose pounds by following conventional weight-loss programs, it’s more than likely that you’ll regain the weight within a month of stopping the program. On the other hand, Venus Factor offers the user long-lasting results, because it conforms to the way the human body functions and manages weight..
