Miss Nigeria Edna Park is 2nd from the right; credits: Nigeria Nostalgia

The mid-20th century was a time of almost Victorian modesty.

I came across the bikini photos of the Miss Universe Contestants in 1964 and when I compared them to what obtains now I wonder if we are progressing or regressing.

Miss Nigeria 1964, Edna Park was our very first representative to an international beauty contest and she looked so different from what our idea of beauty now is..

See photos below.

PoliticsAPC Is Engaging In A Pretentious War Against Corruption - PDP by 247frolic(op): 12:31pm On Oct 30, 2015

The PDP says that the confirmation of former Rivers state governor, Rotimi Amaechi as a minster of the federal republic of Nigeria, has put a dent on APC's “pretentious war against corruption”. The National Publicity secretary, Olisa Metuh said this after an extraordinary meeting with top PDP officials in Abuja yesterday night.

While addressing newsmen after the meeting, Olisa commended PDP senators for staging a walkout before Amaechi's confirmation. "We salute the courage and unity of purpose of our Senators, especially as demonstrated in the Senate chambers today in their collective stand against impunity and corruption in line with the wishes and aspirations of Nigerians”.

''Good day newshelm

Please help of get this info out and perhaps the State will listen to our concerns. This building was a one storey duplex but is being converted to a two storey building for a restaurant. We hear it's "The Place".

It is located directly opposite the Kafi Street entrance to Ikeja City Mall, Alausa, Ikeja.
A part of the building just collapsed yesterday evening, damaging my neighbour's car and narrowly missing his driver.

The matter has been reported to the police but we don't want this to be swept under the carpet.

I doubt if the building has the right foundation for the ongoing redevelopment and if indeed they are building according to the approved plan. It is sad that we don't have value for lives and Nigerians would easily endanger other lives without a care in the world.
I have attached some of the pictures we were able to take of the incident and trust that you will help amplify our feeble voice.

PoliticsNYSC To Issue Passport Fitted Certificates Starting 2014 Batch C by 247frolic(op): 5:19pm On Oct 15, 2015
A newly improved National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) certificates is to be issued to corps members at the conclusion of the mandatory one year service to their fatherland. Speaking at the unveiling ceremony in Abuja, the Director General of the NYSC, Brig-Gen. Johnson Olawumi said the scheme took the step to wage war against forgery and impersonation.

The DG, represented by the Acting Director of Certification, Alhaji Aliu Daura, explained that the new certificate would be embossed with the carrier’s photograph in line with the global best practices. According to Olawumi, the issuance of the new NYSC certificate would take effect from Batch ‘C’ 2014, who will be passing out on 15 October.

“In our concerted effort to make the operation of the NYSC conform with global best practices, the scheme engaged in the holistic e-nysc solution with effect from Batch ‘C’ 2014 where prospective members register online before proceeding to the orientation camp.

This resulted in the enhancement of issuance of NYSC certificates namely; Certificate of National Service, Certificate of Exemption and Letter of Exclusion.

“With effect from Batch ‘C’ 2014, all certificate of National Service bear passport photograph of the corps members at the upper right hand corner of the certificate. “This is to guarantee the security of our certificates from forgery and to block all chances of impersonation. Therefore batch ‘C’ 2014 corps members, who are due to pass-out on 15 October, 2015 will have their certificates embossed with their photograph,” he clarified.

New NYSC Certificate
Shielding more light on the categories of the NYSC certificates, the Director of Press, Mrs Abosede Aderibigbe said Certificate of Exemption is issued to a Full-time graduate, who is above the age of 30 at the time of graduation or such corps member is a staff of security agencies like Armed Forces, Nigeria Police, Department of State Security, National Intelligence Agency (NIA) and Recipients of National Presidential Honours Award.

For Letter of Exclusion, Aderibigbe further said that it was designed to take care of corps population, who are graduates of Part-time, Distance Learning and Sandwich programmes, adding that issuance of letter of exclusion commenced in 2001, and that, they would be able to register and print their letters on line. She noted that the scheme had gone digital, therefore verification of NYSC certificate could now be done electronically.

The ugly incident happened at Owa-Alero Ika north east of Delta state on Sunday Oct 4th. According to a LIB source, a man named Kolawole allegedly caught a guy named Destiny Udoka Okoro in bed with his wife. During the fight, Udoka (pictured right with the said woman) bit off the whole lower lip of the husband, Kolawole...like totally took it off. Left is a photo of Kolawole after the incident - now see what he looked like immediately after it happened, after the cut. *viewer discretion advised*

Awolowo (37), Akintola (36), Ahmadu Bello (36), Effiong (36), Balewa (34) and Okotie-Eboh (27), Enahoro (27) led the struggle for independence after the death of Macaulay. Only Zik was 42 at the time.

In 1966, the first coup was led by: Kaduna Nzeogwu (29) and countered by Murtala Mohammed (28), Theophilus Danjuma (28), Babangida (25), Nanven Garba (23), Sani Abacha (23), Shehu Musa Yaradua (23), and brought into power Gowon (32), Ojukwu (33), Obasanjo (29), Buhari (24).

Most of the military administrators who governed the states under the successive military regimes, most of whom are governors now, were under 30 years.

The brief democratic dispensation which interjected the military interregnums also saw the House of Representatives in particular populated by majority of members under 30 years as well as some senators.

Under 30s were also not in short supply with appointments, we have examples of MT Mbu who became foreign affairs minister at 23 and Pat Utomi who became a presidential adviser at 27 and so on and so forth.

NOW:

Why is it that this age bracket is today still sleeping in 3 seater chairs in their parents’ homes?

Why is it that this age bracket is today still collecting pocket money from their parents?

Why is it that this age bracket is today still writing JAMB?

Why is it that this age bracket is today still sagging their trousers?

Why is it that this age bracket is today still searching for jobs? Why is it that this age bracket is today no longer qualified to even be leaders of youth wings of political parties?

Why is it that this age bracket is today so docile?

Why is it that this age bracket is today still incapable of feeding itself?

Why is it that this age bracket is today barred by law from even aspiring to certain political offices?

Why is it that this age bracket is today
incapacitated, unwilling, unable and incapable of asking questions?

A Newshelm reader who is an eyewitness sent in the story. It's so sad and a shame. Read below...

A single mother of three, left her three children to go and hustle for 2k. She went with her client for the night for just 2k. Left her kids, two boys and a girl. Locked them up inside the room with candle light on. From 11:58pm the room burnt down affecting her neighbors and killing her first son and daughter. Only one of them survived the fire.
Her husband had died leaving her to struggle for the kids and all she can do is to sell her body. The police came and arrested her as she returned this morning. She confessed that the man paid her 2k for the night and she used 200 for transport. Same woman also gave birth to a baby boy few months ago in her room and left the baby to bleed to death through his placenta. She lives in Bacher, in Akar road, Rumolumini Community, Obiakpo LGA, of Rivers State.

PoliticsPHOTO: NDLEA Arrests South African-based Nigerian With Drugs by 247frolic(op): 6:47am On Oct 03, 2015

Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos have arrested a Nigerian grocer based in Pretoria, South Africa with 3.920kg of substances found to be methamphetamine.

The drug was concealed in two bags the suspect identified as Ayoola Ayodeji Adebayo wanted to check in at the departure hall. The arrest took place during the outward screening of passengers on Ethiopian airline flight to South Africa.

NDLEA commander at the Lagos airport, Mr. Ahmadu Garba, said:

“A Nigerian living in South Africa by name Ayoola Ayodeji Adebayo was found in possession of 3.920kg of methamphetamine on his way to South Africa. The drug was
found in a false bottom of his luggage while he was trying to check in the luggage. The case is being investigated” Ahmadu stated.

The suspect, who holds a Higher National Diploma in Estate Management, said he made a mistake getting involved in drug trafficking.

“I sell food and small household goods in Pretoria and I have lived in South Africa for over three years. My friend in Pretoria asked me to bring the two bags to him. He bought my return ticket and gave me N150,000.

I thought the drug would not be detected because it was neatly concealed. This is a big mistake on my part because I have sustained my family with the grocery business. It will not happen again if I can get out of this problem,” he said

PoliticsNigerian Universities Not Listed In World’s First 700 by 247frolic(op): 6:41am On Sep 19, 2015
No Nigerian university is in the first 700 higher institutions of learning in the world and the first 18 in Africa, according to the QS World University Rankings 2015/16.
However, South Africa has nine institutions while Egypt has five. Ghana, Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania have one institution each.

“This is the 12th edition of QS’s annual ranking of the world’s top universities, which uses six performance indicators to assess institutions’ global reputation, research impact, staffing levels and international complexion,” the report said.
In Africa, the University of Cape Town, South Africa, is ranked first on the continent and 171st in the world. The Stellenbosch University, South Africa, is rated second in Africa and 302nd in the world. The University of the Witwatersrand is the third on the continent and 331st globally.
On the global scale, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, United States, scored 100 per cent to retain its top spot in the QS rankings for the fourth year consecutively. Harvard University (US) climbed two places to rank second, followed by the University of Cambridge (United Kingdom), and Stanford University (US) in joint third. MIT came first in the 2012 global rating – a position which Harvard and Cambridge universities had once occupied – and has remained there ever since.
“The primary aim of the QS World University Rankings is to help students make informed comparisons of leading universities around the world,” stated the report.
