Justice Ibrahim Buba of the Federal High Court, sitting in Asaba, Delta State, has convicted and sentenced a former Relationship Manager with the United Bank for Africa, UBA, Victor Onodavwerho, to one year imprisonment.


The convict was arraigned on a four-count charge bordering on money laundering. Justice Buba found him guilty of all the charges and sentenced him to one year imprisonment on each of the four counts. The sentence is to run concurrently. Onodavwerho ran into troubles when he forged the letter-heads of Edo State Universal Basic Education Board and converted a sum of N20,000,000( Twenty Million Naira only) belonging to the Board to build a hotel in his name. His bank petitioned the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC and he was arrested and prosecuted. Thirteen (13) witnesses were presented against him by the Prosecution Counsel, Kayode Oni.

In the same vein, Justice Buba found one Emeka Edem guilty of two-counts of conspiracy and illegal dealing in petroleum products.

He was convicted and sentenced to two years imprisonment. The sentence came with an option of fine of Two Hundred Thousand Naira (N200, 000, 00) on each count. Also, a Mercedes Benz Truck, loaded with 30 drums of products confirmed to be crude oil, used by the convict to commit the crime, was forfeited to the Federal Government.

Edem was arrested by the Joint Task Force (JTF) “Operation Restore Hope” with a Mercedes Benz Truck, with registration number Ebonyi XA 327 CHR, loaded with 30 drums of petroleum products confirmed to be crude oil. The matter was transferred to the Commission for further prosecution.

He was arraigned on 22 January, 2009 before Justice M.B.Idris of Federal High Court, sitting in Benin before the matter was transferred to Asaba division of the Federal High Court.

Counterfeit drugs worth over 80 million naira have been destroyed by officials of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, (NAFDAC).

The Director General of NAFDAC, Prof Mojisola Adeyeye, who was speaking in Abuja, says the agency is working relentlessly to rid the Nigerian market of unsafe and unwholesome products.

Although the circulation of counterfeit drugs is said to have dropped from 19.6 percent in 2012 to 3.6 percent in 2015, officials of the agency are promising not to rest on their oars until drug counterfeiters are totally defeated.

The NAFDAC boss further noted that the support will be in the areas of surveillance and enforcement.

And after the speeches, the agencies boss and other officials started setting the goods ablaze.

This gesture according to some Nigerians will serve as a deterrent to those who are bent on carrying out the illicit trade of drug counterfeiting.

The Lagos State Government has arrested no fewer than 200 cart pushers across all the 57 Local Governments and Local Council Development Areas of the State for constituting environmental nuisances.

The arrest was made possible through a joint environmental sanitation raid by the Lagos State Neighborhood Safety Corps and Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps whose enforcement officers simultaneously arrested cart pushers who pick refuse from citizens and dump wastes at roadsides, major roads and other public places across the State.

Speaking on the arrest at Safety Arena, Bolade, Oshodi, the Board Chairman of the Lagos State Neighborhood Safety Corps, DIG Isreal Ajao said a cleaner and healthier Lagos remains a top priority of the state government in its transition from a mega city to a smart city.

“If a government is transcending from mega-city to smart city, all the components must be there. The key component of a Smart City is a clean and healthy environment”, he stated.

He said indiscriminate dumping of refuse on road medians, drainages, highways and everywhere will not be tolerated as the government has committed a lot of human and material resources to ensure Lagos remains a healthy habitation for all through the Cleaner Lagos Initiative.

The Chairman called on residents of the State to stop patronizing cart pushers, but rather support the authorized waste manager, which is the VisionScape.

“Residents of the State should buy-in to the Cleaner Lagos initiative and sustainable environment. Of course, you know without a healthy body you cannot have a healthy life”.

“Offenders will be prosecuted under the State sanitation law. This will serve as a deterrent to others. Residents should dispose of their refuse in a manner that is authorized”, he said.

On his part, the Corp Marshall, Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps, ACP Daniel Isiofa (RTD) noted that dumping of refuse on road medians will affect drainages, which could cause more disaster to the environment during the rainy season.

He said that all the arrested environmental offenders will be charged under the Lagos Environmental Sanitation Law with a minimum penalty of community service, 20,000 Naira and maximum 50,000 Naira fines, adding that there could be a jail term too especially for repeat offenders.

Emmanuel Gyan, a student from high school in Ghana is currently in police custody for beating his mother to death before trying to burn her for ‘losing’ the memory card for his phone.



The incident happened in Sefwi-Wiawso District in the Western region of Ghana. Emmanuel is 17 his mother is 52. He is alleged to have beaten her over the head many times with a pestle before following up with a naked flame to burn her.



Emmanuel was carried to the police station by his own father.



Gyan had accused his mother of taking his memory card and when she denied he became enraged and attacked her with a pestle hitting over the head till she died.
