Few days after Kaduna state governor, Nasir El Rufai, forwarded a bill to the state House of Assembly, stating that religious leaders in the state will have to obtain a one year license to preach in the state, an Edo state based pastor and the Senior Pastor of Omega Fire Ministries (OFM), Apostle Johnson Suleiman, called on the governor to revoke the bill now or die. According to Suleiman, El Rufai has no right to regulate the activities of religious leaders when he has not regulated the activities of traditionalist in the state. He said before he, El Rufai, became governor, they were men of God and that they will still remain men of God when he leaves office. "I want to warn the governor of Kaduna state. Many times I have read in the papers how he abused Jesus and Christians came after him. He said that they are joking that Nothing can happen. I am talking to you, Kaduna Governor. Listen, I am not against sanitizing a state but you say people should get licence for preaching; it is not applicable in Nigeria. Even a herbalist does not get a license for practicing herbalism. When you say license for preaching, then you are standing against the constitution that says freedom of worship. I have no problem, we can test powers now. There are certain laws that cannot happen in this country. Not when Nigeria is under God. If need be, over this matter, heaven will intervene. I am saying this specifically to the executive governor of Kaduna, revoke this law or die!"he said Read what the bill is about below... The Religious Regulation Bill, designed to replace the Religious Regulation Edict of 1984, is geared towards regulating Christianity and Islam as it seeks to create an inter-faith Ministerial Committee to be appointed by the governor and exercise control over Jama’atu Nasril Islam, JNI, and the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN. Highpoints of the bill include: *The ministerial committee shall issue licenses to religious bodies. *Without such licenses, you cannot preach. *No external preacher can preach in Kaduna without a permit. *The committee has the power to refuse to issue licenses No criteria are given as to what will qualify one to have a license issued to him or for one to be denied a license. The bill empowers JNI and CAN to keep records of churches and mosques including data of preachers. The law criminalizes the use of religious CDs, flash drive and other communication gadgets except in churches, mosques or other places of worship or personal houses. The implication is that you cannot listen to Christian tapes in your car or at any place except your house and in a church. If you preach without a license, you are guilty of an offence punishable by two years imprisonment. If you hold any Christian gathering even in a church and use loud speaker (microphone) after 8.00 p.m, you are guilty of an offence punishable with two years imprisonment. If you listen to a message in your car, you are guilty of an offence punishable by two years imprisonment. If you hold a crusade or any programme or any other kind of programme and use a loudspeaker at the said programme as long as it is not a church, you are guilty of an offence punishable by two years imprisonment. The bill criminalizes the abuse of religious books and makes it punishable by two years imprisonment. (It does not define what ‘abuse of religious books’ mean. It criminalizes the use of derogatory terms in describing any religion and makes it punishable by two years imprisonment. It does not define what ‘use of derogatory terms in describing any religion’ means.) Every preacher will have to obtain one year license (renewable every year) or risk two years imprisonment. If you invite any external preacher (i.e. preacher from outside Kaduna State), such a person must be licensed for the duration of his/her stay and the body issuing the license has the right to reject the external preacher if it feels he is not qualified to preach in the state. http://www.newshelm.com/2016/03/revoke-your-anti-preaching-bill-or-die.html cc lalasticlala

At least 16 people have been confirmed dead after six gunmen attacked beach goers outside three hotels in the Ivory Coast beach resort of Grand-Bassam on Sunday, March 12. L'Etoile du Sud hotel, the Wharf Hotel and Hotel La Taverne were the targets. Grand Bassam is located about 40km(25 miles) east of the country's commercial capital Abidjan. Interior Minister Hamed Bakayoko said the gunmen have been neutralized in the police operation so far. "Three hotels in Grand Bassam were attacked this Sunday by armed men. Security and defense forces intervened immediately and were able to neutralize six terrorists. The clean-up operation is under way," Bakayoko said on state television. The assailants, who were "heavily armed and wearing balaclavas, fired at guests at the L'Etoile du Sud (Southern Star), a large hotel which was full of expats in the current heatwave," a witness told AFP. A combined total of sixteen people, including fourteen civilians and two soldiers, were killed in the attack, Ivory Coast President Alassane Ouattara said. "Six attackers came onto the beach in Bassam this afternoon ... We have 14 civilians and two special forces soldiers who were unfortunately killed,” said Ouattara, who visited the site where the assault took place. A police source told Reuters earlier that there were “four Europeans” among the victims. Earlier, another witness told Reuters that he saw at least seven corpses. "I saw seven dead that I filmed. There were four attackers. I was swimming when it started and I ran away,”"said the witness, who managed to shoot a video at the site. One person killed in the shooting was a French citizen, according to France’s Foreign Ministry. "France will bring its logistical support and intelligence to Ivory Coast to find the attackers. It will pursue and intensify its cooperation with its partners in the fight against terrorism," French President Francois Hollande said. According to Mauritian newspaper al-Akhbar, Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb and al-Mourabitoune has taken responsibility for the attack. http://www.newshelm.com/2016/03/photos-armed-gunmen-attack-beach-resort.html cc lalasticlala

Nigeria's Youth and Sports Minister, Solomon Dalung has called Nigerians to support Sunday Oliseh in the trying times the coach is facing at the moment. He was quizzed by members of the House Committee on Sports during a budget defense on Tuesday and answered questions regarding the feud between the coach and the NFF. “We must appreciate the way Nigerians behave and their sentiments to sports especially football. Nigerians do not accept anything short of victory. The performance of the team that led to whatever we are hearing, from my own analysis, was due to overconfidence.'' '' In terms of preparations and planning, you could access them based on their first outing. Of course, they had some welfare challenges which we inherited when we came on board. We took steps to secure approval for funds but the process of the release of funds could not beat the time of the outing. That also contributed to their early exit” The Barrister also admitted he had spoken to Oliseh to hear his own side in the ongoing feud and also called the NFF president Amaju Pinnick to be sure he hadn't sacked the coach. Barrister Dalung said that after he met with the NFF President earlier in the day he called for peace and support for the coach. “The idea of losing matches and sacking coaches is over. We cannot be winning matches all the time. We must build wider spaces in our minds for failure and success because that is the only way we can develop. The fact that he lost a game is not enough for us to begin to look at history. You don’t run a country like that! The man should be allowed and supported to come back and prepare the team for the qualifying matches ahead. If he had health challenges while working for us, we shouldn’t abandon him at this time”.Dalung said. http://www.metronaija.com/2016/02/losing-game-is-not-enough-to-sack.html cc: lalasticlala |

The Lagos State Government on Tuesday said it would no longer allow social functions and parties in public schools just as owners of private schools across the state have been warned to comply with rules and regulations guiding their operations. The Deputy Governor of the State, Dr. Mrs Idiat Oluranti Adebule who disclosed this while briefing the media on the strategic focus of Governor Akinwunmi Ambode’s administration on education for 2016, said the Governor had directed that schools should no longer be used for social functions. She said: “The Governor has directed that schools will no longer be used for social activities any longer. We want to implore members of the public to report any school that violates this directive and we would ensure that defaulting schools are sanctioned accordingly.” Adebule, who also oversees the Ministry of Education, said the state government was putting a searchlight on the standard of education in the private schools, saying it will no longer be business as usual for such schools that undermine best practices. She said as a first step, the government will engage with private school owners and proprietors to intimate them on the action plan of the present administration towards improving the standard of education, saying that though government is willing to partner with private schools, they must also be willing to adhere strictly to the acceptable standard. “Much as private schools are partners in the sector, we would not fold our hands and watch the standard flopped. Some schools even operate without registering with the government. We want to urge such schools to do the right thing or government will have no choice but to do what it has to do,” she said. Earlier, Special Adviser to the Governor on Education, Mr. Obafela Bank-Olemoh, while giving a detailed presentation on the policy thrust of Governor Akinwunmi Ambode’s administration for the education sector, said the state government intends to construct the biggest digital library. He said the government was already at the planning stage of the library, while the actual establishment of the project would commence in the next quarter of the year. He said the state government will build 10 new model schools with state of the art facilities, while two new technical colleges will be built in the course of the year in areas where such facilities are urgently needed. On the Ibile Tablets, Bank Olemoh said 324,000 tablets to Senior Secondary School students, adding that plans have been concluded to register all students in both public and private schools in the state under the Lagos State Student Personal Administration Number (LASPIN) project to aid proper planning. On the free meal in schools project, he said the state government is currently perfecting its framework for the eventual take off, saying that the project is expected to on the one hand, enhance the learning capacity of the pupils and on the other, boost the economy of the state.
