A STUDY has shown that more than 71 per cent of Anambra citizens are poor, against the published national average of 69 per cent.
This disturbing trend, according to the Director of the African Centre for Leadership, Strategy and Development (Centre LSD), Dr Otive Igbuzor, in his welcome address at a one-day Voice to the People (V2P) Policy Dialogue on Anambra state 2015 Budget and Emerging Issues in Awka yesterday, exists irrespective of the fact that the state is renowned for commercial activities.

Igbuzor explained that the high rate of urbanisation in the state has led to overcrowding, resulting in pollution, diseases, social vices, congestion, housing shortages, unemployment, inadequate solid-waste management among other social challenges.

To curb the trend, Igbuzor urged the people to hold government accountable. This, he believes would lead to improved responsiveness and service delivery.

A lecturer at the University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN), Dr Uzochukwu Amakom, delivered lecture on Anambra State Budget and Budgeting 2015: Emerging Issues.

True in a way but I think in the are of housing and congestion and urbanisation is a natural course in the sense that no matter the number of building projects erected, there will still he no breathing space but Government can always help. Lagos is also congested with unending traffics and other factors that contribute. People are trying to survive and so many are coming into towns from villages and other states so why won't it be congested.
Check the Igbo population that relocated back to east especially Anambarians all the way from northern states especially the disturbed states. So individuals can also assist the Government to curb it . There are just very few companies and industries and the then the Onitsha main market, air employment opportunities has to be limited. So government should rise up and tackle the issue before it gets out if hand.

Planning, planning and planning.

Unless Nigerians learn the art of planning new estates, you cannot reap the full benefits of urbanization.

If 70% of Anambra residents are poor,

then 90% of osun state ekiti state residents are poor and 99% of Katsina residents are poor.

This is not a reasonable study. What areas of anambra were the reasearch conducted in?

What was the standard of measuring poverty?

Was it money, or assets?

If they used individual's income as an indicator of poverty, how were they able to obtain accurate data since there we do not have keep track of employment? Anyone can lie about their income.

This is not a study. Its a joke.

Lmfaooo. Do you want to bet the author of that article orginal name is yoloba and bet what's written was never included in the so called study or lecture. In fact, where the study and lecture, let's see it and hear it. The same anambra state with the highest HDI in SE and included in the cash less transaction from SLS last project is 70% poor. Poverty ridden osun where people are starving and running around looking for refugee assistance because of few months of unpaid salary must be 99.9% poor then.

When have we ever read of Anambra ppl begging for money or even food? grin grin

Half of the beggars in Anambra State are from Oyo and Osun State.
Ibadan is the begging capital of the world, if you cast a stone in the streets of Hong Kong you will definitely hit an entrepreneur but you cast in Ibadan you definitely hit a beggar.

Out of 10 people in Ibadan 5 are professional beggars while 2 are covert.

No igbo, I repeat no igbo blood live in mud house in South West. The reason my ppl are being accused of taking over Lagos, is bc they can't bear living in yoloba poorly built houses, so they strive to acquire land and build their tastefully designed houses to d envy of d yolobas Who Wish them ill

So obvious .
in spite of the ego boosting falsehood( figures )churned out by Iweala.
Poverty and the availability of opportunities have a direct correlation to crime , social spending ( education and health),stability ,cost of living , standard of governance.
