On Tuesday, Nigerian geotechnical consultant Jidet Nigeria revealed that a group of indigenous mineral explorers have identified 196 million metric tonnes of coal reserves in Edo State, Southern Nigeria.

The reserves are estimated to have a generation capacity of 1,200MW for 50 years with a believed construction cost of $1.5 billion, Olujide Pocon Tajudeen-Alan, head of the technical team at Jidet, told local newspaper The Daily Trust.

Tajudeen-Alan said: "We have the capacity to produce 1,000MW electricity for the next 50 years from the coal reserve. As at now, we have confirmed a reserve of 196 million [metric tonnes].”

Jidet has met with the Federal Ministry of Power in Abuja on how to attract technical partners and willing financiers with "a view to actualising the project", according to the newspaper report.

"Our major reasons for coming here is we want to commence the application and processing of licenses to officially enter into the power sector. We are also soliciting the support of experts in the ministry to guide us because initially we are mainly into mineral exploration,” the company said.

Contributing to Nigeria's power generation
Minister of Power Chinedu Nebo was represented by his special adviser on renewable energy, Dr. Albert Okorogu, who responded by saying that: "The meager electricity we have in Nigeria is not sufficient so anything we have that we can tap into is very much welcomed.”

Okorogu continued: "They have discovered coal in some unusual places that we have looked into and that's wonderful. If you look at our coal map, we have never actually mapped Edo as having coal. So the ministry will do all it can in ensuring that they move from mining coal to using it to generate power.”

In March, the African Development Bank (AfDB) put up $500 million as a partial risk guarantee for the Nigerian power sector.

The federal government will use the funds for expansion of coal-fired power plants in attempts to increase the country's power generation capacity.

Managing director of the Nigeria Bulk Electricity Trading Rumundaka Wonodi said: “We are working with the World Bank for [a] partial risk guarantee to support the projects that we undertake; unfortunately, the World Bank is very reticent and they are not quite committed to giving support to coal because they deem it to be dirty fuel and not very good for the environment.

He added: "However, the AfDB, which is African and understands that Africa needs power from every source that it can, is supporting coal."

When last did Enugu produce any coal with its dilapidated mines? The SE myopic politics does not help their economics but they are too blind and consumed by hate to realize it.

No state can displace Enugu in coal deposit, Enugu is a place where you see coal even while digging burial ground. You see coal even on the streets.

Ask anybody who has been to Enugu, Enugu city is seated on coal, to the extent you see coal when digging foundation for buildings.

this one no be figure thing, when travelling from enugu to port Harcourt, you will see coal on the road with your korokoro eyes.

The coal in enugu is so enormous that digging borehole is a problem, even when you get to see water when digging well, you will have to isolate lot of coal deposit.

These people don't know what they are saying, is it not the same Edo I go to almost everyday?

blame your shameless govt for the dilapidated mines. The federal govt is supposed to be in charge of resources exploitation. When it comes to coal, just leave it for enugu, no other state can contest.

According to the news report, Geo-scientists have identified 196 million metric tonnes of coal reserves in Edo State, compared to 49 million in Enugu.

Edo State now has surpassed and quadrupled (4x) Enugu's coal capacity.

We rely on scientific FIGURES and not biased stories from a grave-digger.

You can shove your insults in the deepest recesses of your anal canal.

The fact is your private entrepreneurs have failed to exploit the mines despite several privatization efforts in the past, and your government representatives that would have intervened are now non-existent due to your blind infantile politics.

Edo State is a ruling party state and now has 4x the capacity of Enugu so Nigeria can prepare for the rise of the new coal GIANT.

Enugu need not be worried, it's not like the mines have not been useless for the past 20 years or the individuals have been able to privately help themselves, or that you have the political relevance to do so.

SOUTH EAST NIGERIA COAL HAVE THE CAPACITY TO GENERATE 5000 MEGA WATTS ABOVE NIGERIA'S CURRENT POWER GENERATION OF 4420 MEGA WATTS

The Federal Government has entered into partnership with an indigenous firm, One Nation Energy Limited, to generate 500 megawatts of electricity from coal. The deal will ensure the addition of 500mw of electricity to the national grid .The power station will be located in Enugu state .

The Minister of Power, Prof. Chinedu Nebo who Spoke while signing the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with One Nation Energy in Abuja, yesterday said, that Nigeria is blessed with abundance of coal deposits, with Enugu being the hub.

‘‘ Its coal deposits are in three layers when compared with other parts of the country that have one layer of the resource deposited at a point, all across large stretch in eight other states,”he noted .

The Minister of Power, Prof. Chinedu Nebo, said the project would provide stable electricity that would be devoid of the challenge of sabotage by vandals who were bent on frustrating the government’s effort at providing adequate power

The Chairman/Chief Executive Officer, One Nation Energy, Dr. Uzoma Obiyo, said the coal-fired plant was being constructed in Enugu State as a result of the abundance of coal deposits there.

According to him, Nigerian coal deposits were very clean and that the processing of the mineral resource for energy delivery would not be cumbersome.

Obiyo noted that the South-East had enough coal deposits to deliver about 5,000MW electricity, adding that the zone was a veritable corridor of power supply to the other parts of the country.

The chairman, who signed on behalf of his firm, expressed the company’s commitment to the realization of the project and called on the government to help fast-track the procurement of necessary permits, license and approvals.

Stop embarrassing yourself ILLITERATE grin

Non-reportable and unreported mean different things.

Non reportable means the 111 million does not meet the requirements to be classified as commercially exploitable coal which is why it was separated from the 49 million in the first place.

Limit your OSU logic to wherever you've been banished to.
