OpinionLeader:
BELOW WAS MR. BABATUNDE FASHOLA'S STATEMENT IN MARCH 2015

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola, on Sunday evening boasted that he could provide uninterrupted power supply to Lagos residents between six and eight months.

Fashola spoke at the commissioning of 8.5 megawatts Lekki Independent Power Project (IPP), the fifth of such power projects in the last five years in the state.

The governor said the addition of the Lekki IPP was a testament to the fact that stable power does not require rocket science to achieve in the country.

While challenging power distribution companies in the state, Fashola said, “Let the Eko DISCOs sign a contract with me, giving part of their concessioning to the state government, in about six to eight months, there will be power in all homes in Lagos State,” Fashola said.

He added, “So, let no one say that he has no money to deliver power for the entire country. This is the limit to which the law allows us to do, but we have done this to make a statement that power can be generated. So, when they come with lies that power is impossible, you can tell them that we have power here; we make it possible”.

The project, courtesy of the state government, in partnership with Heritage Bank, is to serve Lagos State Water Corporations in Lekki Phase 1, Oniru, Victoria Island and Ikoyi, as well as over 25km of public lightening in the Lekki axis.

Commissioning the project, Fashola said he felt fulfilled with the conduct of youths that delivered the project, despite the difficulties in getting to the finishing point.

He said it also showed that the money to improve the Nigerian economy is here, “since we don’t need the World Bank to come and do this for us.”

Also, General Manager, Lagos State Electricity Board, Damilola Ogunbiyi, said the state had shown that reliable and sustainable power projects are possible through the youths.

Ogunbiyi said though it had been a successful story, the state was just scratching the surface in its “aggressive development plan” in the area of power.

Promoter of the project, Faruk Agoro noted that the new IPP was an innovative idea of world-class natural gas-fired power generating facility, sold to the government by youths and it was bought into, to support government institutions, especially in the area of water supply and security.

The Lekki IPP is 8.5 megawatts, with the capacity for 30 megawatts.

This brings the Lagos IPPS to a total of 47 megawatts of electricity in total, powering several public institutions around the state.

The generated megawatts is however still a far cry from the over 10, 000 megawatts power deficit in the state.

On his part, the State Commissioner in the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Taofeek Tijani, said the new addition was about continuity in public infrastructure programme of the state government

eh! fashola, kilode? did u say stable power does not require rocket science? OK oooooo.
I guess what u need now is atomic science.

Elections are over. Move on from the pains. Am experiencing the national blackout too only that IKEDC in charge of my zone came out to explain the reason for the blackout. Feel free to live with hate and bitterness for all I care.

One thing that is so common now among the youths is that they blame the government for everything. For pete's sake, IKEDC is a private firm!! Can GTB, PWC, or Total staffers go on strike because they performed poorly in their company's performance appraisal? We need to change our ways of reasoning.

No serious investor would want to buy any of our refineries if they know they would be frustrated by silly unions like the Ajaokuta steel company issue. The major problem the country has is the citizens. IKEDC is a profit making organization and not a government agency. If you as a staff do not meet expected KPIs, then you should expect the worst. No room for inefficiency and ineffectiveness.

Note that most private firms are owned by our political bastards !!! who control means of power. Live Ekoh Hotel. banana island. ETC

It is not nationwide as some states aren't affected
Every state is affected. The government already acknowledged drop in electricity generation and they attributed it to pipeline vandalization. Even if by some stroke of miracle power supply in your area did not drop, majority of the country is feeling the heat - literally.
Stop making excuses for people who already admitted failure.

Admit it already, you tried a fast one that is dead on arrival.
Your first and second post on this topic blamed everyone for not seeing that the blackout is due to IKEDC strike and now that you have been called out, you resort to playing the "elections are over" and "stop the hate" card.
Why are you guys ready to defend anything even when it is absolutely unnecessary.
Even Fashola himself will not tow the line you guys tow here.

You are an apologetic for mediocrity. I'm sure you were amongst those who blamed the past administration for all the problems in Naija and even the price of crude oil.
Let's call a spade a spade. Fashola is incompetent for that position he was given. We need technocrats. All Fashola knows is to increase tarrifs and price for basic services.
But the problem with Nigerians is tribalism and sentiments. Guy, change your ways. Stop looking for who to blame on the behalf of this government.

I hilighted 2 important points you made.
If we shouldn't blame the government or Fashola, who should we hold responsible ?
Alas, GEJ is no longer here so he can't be blamed. But who should be held responsible ?
Ok. Private firm is the problem. So who brought them in ? Who monitors them ?

Fashola is a politician. He's not an engineer to understand the technicalities in power. We need a professional. I don't know why people are so partisan. If this had happened under Gej, guess what, we would not have rest. Now Buhari was handed power and all we hear is complain.

1. 16 years of PDP produced nothing after stealing and sharing $20 billion power fund.

2. They then turn around and sold whatever obsolete scrap left to t their cronies with zero experience and resources to invest for improved performance and capacity

3. Instead of going public to generate funds for capital investments, they keep begging the banks for loans, but banks are not willing to give them 1 kobo.

4. With no money to invest on capital projects and improved performance, it means continued pains and darkness.

5. Solution. Either the public pay higher tariff, secure loans from the banks or errase the while arrangement and let firms build r their own modular power plants and transmission lines and deliver power directly to r their local customers. This of course calls for a new round of investments, but it remains the most viable solution right now instead of the worthless national set up with too many disruptions and almost obsolete transmission lines that eats up a large portion of what's fed into it with little in return.

National power system not the way to go and has never been.

For the usual silly and tribal nonsense crowd, you are experiencing the consequences of PDPs 16 years of corruption, looting, stealing and incompetence and also $20 billion stolen power funds.
