GBAM. Building together as a family, with both having ownership and title.

Mindfulness:
Going by all the comments here, I suggest everyone stays in their house, husband in one, wife in another. grin This way, nobody can be thrown out. grin

But wait a moment, why don't they just build a FAMILY HOUSE TOGETHER?

I restrain myself from further comments because I do not feel like offending anyone or everyone here. grin

Nigerian men and thier wahala. If a woman doesn't build house she must hear him say "under my roof" "in my house" "I built this with my hard earned money" "you didn't contribute to this"

The woman goes and builds house, some will now say she is an enemy of progress against tradition. If she built it why must the house be in his name? Una never happy. If your wife builds a house it's "our house". But if man builds house its "his" house abi?

Marriage includes both parities. I don't see it as a bad thing. But only a cultured and educated Nigerian man will accept it. If a wife builds a house it's "thier" house. If husband builds a house it's "thier" house. Simple.

House building doesn't take away respect, or submission. That character. Nothing to do with structure.
.

You dey mind them.. when most women pay house rent or contribute to paying the rent.so y can't they live in a house built by their wife? Men and their ego..such men will start having inferiority complex and start complaining abt their wife at any slightest thing she does be it good or bad.

This is not a matter of being angels or saints. This is about the man being the held of the home.

Should I honestly tell you guys why you are so scared? It is because you make us feel indebted to you for the things you do for us too. So you automatically assume that you would be treated the same way if the case was reversed. Change your views on your woman first, it is then you'll start building your true confidence such that it is not linked to your financial capability and yes, she would respect you all the same. I think this issue has more to do with your ego as men than we being disrespectful as women. The truth is a disrespectful woman is a disrespectful woman whether in your house or in hers. What usually happens in this scenario is that, you pick on things she does that you'd have probably overlooked if it was your house and tag her as starting to be disrespectful. When in the real sense, she was always that way. It is more about insecurity on your part really.
I am more attracted to strong and independent women not scared of them, I am surrounded by them. I won't even date a lady that doesn't have anything doing. But it is better we both contribute to the cost of the house than to live in a House exclusively built by her. That's just a NO. Ladies will always he ladies. They are some roles a man must play. It isn't about culture, religion African thing. It is just instincts.

But when you build a house will you add you wifes name to the deed? If not then you a guilty of the same thing.

I've always believed that the best thing to do is to buy a house in your children's name but there's nothing wrong in putting your wife's name on the deed.

I don't know what's wrong, especially we YORUBAs.... I see it as no biggie in as much as it won't lead her to giving me some type of attitude. My parents also had dis issue, I heard my mum bought her land before my Dad and she was already thinking of starting foundation.... Before her brother(my uncle) told her to stop working on it as it might raise tension amongst her husband's(my dad) family.... To cut the long story short, my mum joined hand with my dad to build his own house we the kids grew up to live in... Then after some years, some Government agency came around saying the land our property is on is a government owned land... That its either they resell the land to us or they demolish our house. It was really tough that year, but tank God we came out top at the end, my mum later built her own house(which we the kids so much love like ....) And my dad has his. My mum still under my dads roof. The problem why I think its Taboo is cos most of this women out here can't handle success, when their money start stacking up , they start to feel superior and egoism sets in. If my future wife can build her own house before me, its fine. Its more like a motivation for me to hustle even hard

For me I don't see anything wrong living in a house built by your humble, respectful and well cultured wife.

But for the selfish wife without manners please don't live in a house built by her, because she will always frustrate your life with the "this house is my hard earned money", forgetting that wives are helpmates to their husbands.

Exactly. The mouthy type. She will frustrate the life out of the man.

On the surface, you dad might seem old-fashioned but he's on point. Women who married your dad's generation are even far humbler than girls of nowadays.

About 95% of women nowadays don't have the good manners, respect and humility of a generation or two ago. Their respect mostly begins and ends with the benefit they get from you.

The man will be reminded at the slightest provocation that he's only a lodger in that house. His family will likely quickly overstay their welcome when visiting.

Why should the house belong to the woman alone? Is it that she built the house before they got married?

If not, why shouldn't both of their names be in the house document? And both consider themselves as co-owners?

To protect your hubby or wife should the unexpected happen, couples should have both names on land and house documents, irrespective of who contributes most money to build the house.

What deeper issues? Trust issues, issues with happiness, issues with authority and so on!

Whose culture and tradition? I'm sure you are familiar with the culture and traditions of major tribes in Nigeria, if not educate yourself!

Really? Why then is the name of the wife seldom "on the deed"? This ties back to your previous question, men were made head by society, culture and even spirituality. It takes a very confident, mature man to not look at the risks and buy a property in his wife's name. This is why nowadays we have both names on the deed, it's not rare to see men with multiple houses, some in his wife's name, others in his children's name.

O.k now this is the era of gender equality...if we are equal as per law then nothing spoil living with a woman in her own built house but now that the law is yet to take effect in Naija,it is morally & socially suicidal to do so except you are not a real man.
Re: Can You Live In A House Built By Your Wife? by Gaddafithe2nd(m): 1:32pm On Mar 30, 2016
why not. She is my partner, I can live in the house she built. Some people do think that only a man should be richer than his wife meanwhile, God gives wealth whoever he wishes to give.

What's wrong in the woman building a house and staying in it with her husband? Yea there are SOME women who will use that as an excuse to be rude and disrespectful to their husband but the same goes for men. They can also act high and mighty just cos they own the house. Thats why you see useless men throwing their wives out of the house. Tbh I think the best solution is that a couple should buy a house together or build one together so there is equality. simple
Lol. When u marry, let ur husband pack into ur house oh. I spoke for myself.

Ur talk sef don show say u be wahala woman

Well, I won't blame her, maybe that's the way she is been brought uup from her home, that wemen can not achieve anything on there own without the help of or contributions of a man!

I was brought up 2 understand that what a man can do a woman can do better and also women shod b treated equally in social economic chain and every sphares of life

I think you need some education first. If you think that all major tribes require of wives to include their husbands' names in their properties, then you know very little.

Really? Why then is the name of the wife seldom "on the deed"? This ties back to your previous question, men were made head by society, culture and even spirituality. Who was talking of buying a property in the wife's name? And who told you that many men can afford more than one house? undecided
