gidgiddy: THE IRONSI MILITARY GOVERNMENT BROUGHT IN UNITARY CONSTITUTION WHICH SUCCESSIVE GOVERNMENT IN NIGERIA INCLUDING THE PRESENT GOVERNMENT REFUSED TO CHANGE OR ABOLISH TILL TODAY. THERE IS THE GROWING CALL FOR NIGERIA TO BE RESTRUCTURED INTO A TRUE FEDERAL STATE WHERE TRUE FEDERALISM, FISCAL FEDERALISM AND RESOURCE CONTROL IS PRACTISED. Sharing the crude oil resources of the Niger delta region to idle state is not only oppressive but archaic. 2 Likes |

Baselm:You. Don't. Give. The. Prime Minister's. Killers. A. Pardon. You don't do it. Ironsi was knaive not to have seen what was coming. The fact that Danjuma got away with murdering the head of state and went on to prosper with his blood-soaked hands is a part of our tragedy as a nation. 8 Likes 1 Share |

JuanDeDios: U might be a brave soldier and know nothing about governance, coupled with the fact he wasn't prepared for governance, he was just a reactionist who benefitted from the heroics of the revolutionists. We need men like Nzeogwu, Ademoyega and Ifeanjuwa again to start another revolution in this country, but they must complete the revolution this time, not surrender to some opportunistic reactionists. 2 Likes |

Almost all that came out of this episode alive gained something. Danjuma became a billionaire, Bello and even his son , became a governor, Ironsi's son Thomas was given an appointment by Obj, whilst Ironsi' ADC, Nwankwo, we're told became a senator later. Hmm, Pray what happened to the family of the gallant Adekunle Fajuyi who paid the ultimate sacrifice for loyalty. Never heard that any of his children later went on to become anything. 6 Likes 1 Share |

Billionaire09: T.Y Danjuma arrested Ironsi and Fajuyi but he didn't actually execute them. The young hotheaded subalterns hijacked the situation. Is Buhari dead? Well he wasn't in Ibadan July 1966. Obasanjo also wasn't present. |

JuanDeDios: - All peacekeepers are usually cited for bravery in Congo, the m0ron is no different. Ask why he was never cited for bravery in his own country, Nigeria! I think the fact that Ironsi's actions also put my dad in danger means I don't need Danjuma to know how useless he was. 3 Likes 1 Share |

DMerciful:You can use your head, cant you? Ironsi promulgated Decree 34 (known as Unification Decree) of 1966 changing Nigeria from federalism to a unitary state to eliminate tribalism and ethnocentrism. The Counter Coup of July 1966 was allegedly carried out to reverse the above Decree 34. Infact the first act of Gowon's military junta was to suspend/abrogate the Unification Decree reverting Nigeria to a federal state which has proved an albatross to the nation ever since. So what nonsense are you talking about? 2 Likes 1 Share |

JuanDeDios: They killed the prime minister, Yes. but they have a leverage( the whole of Northern Nigeria which is bigger than southern Nigeria) and handed themselves over to Aguiyi, they weren't captured. They could have started a civil war at the expense of civilian lives which they have more resources and tactical heads to win than Ojukwu who did the same 1 Like |

Baselm: I agree with the bolded - he was a professional soldier, not an IT politician. As to your call for a revolution, be careful what you wish for. If you're wondering what I mean, take a pencil and write down every country that went through are violent revolution, including the Arab Spring and reflect on where it got them. The problem was the first coup. The soldiers should have let the politicians commit their blunders and we would have emerged out of it. Maybe things won't have improved but they certainly won't have got as bad it turned out with the soldiers. 9 Likes 1 Share |

Baselm:You seriously believe Nzeogwu and co could have thrived in the north after killing the Sardauna who was considered a god by northern folk? No, they won't. If that was Ironsi's thinking, he erred. And sold out the country the way our leaders are doing today by releasing Boko Haram commanders and paying the terrorists millions of dollars. What you do is declare Nzeogwu and co wanted and send the troops after them like it was done with Dimka. They were in the north, but that did not mean that soldiers stationed in the north were with them. 4 Likes 1 Share |

maestroferddi: Ironsi's Decree 34 has absolutely nothing to do with his own blatant tribalism and treatment of IGBO coup plotters which led to reprisal attacks and subsequently the civil war! I know because it was daily news in my military home on how his weak and mediocre actions endanger soldiers, politicians and the rest of the country. I will never forgive that assh0le for putting my dad's life in danger! Anyone giving credit to a dunce like Ironsi should be slapped and made to frog jump! 5 Likes 1 Share |

The cause of the coup was not because of tribalism infact Nzeogu wanted to install Awolowo. He should have left the structure and fix the coupists! maestroferddi: 2 Likes 1 Share |

colestephan86: Yes, Ironsi delayed in persecuting the coup plotters cos, he spent more time trying the pacify the northerners. At the emboldened, after Dimka was arrested in Feb, the SMC didn't order for his execution until May. |
