We have heard of how good engine oils produced by our local lubricants companies are and we are still wondering why are motorists going for foreign produced synthetic oils when there are good oils produced locally by our local manufacturers. Why is there no trust for these local oils, that we are even prepared to buy engine oils made by Turkish Companies than patronise the Mobil, Oando, Forte, Total, Conoil and MRS. Who certifies these brands in Nigeria?
According to ACEA, those oil labels claiming ACEA certification are self certified and that most oil label are unsuitable for some engines.
http://www.acea.be/industry-topics/tag/category/lubricants

High quality lubricants are necessary to ensure the reliability of modern high-tech engines.

In order for motor vehicles to function correctly they require high quality oils and lubricants. Differently performing oils are required in different circumstances and climatic conditions.

There are minimum standards for oils that are given in the ACEA European Oil Sequences.

The ACEA European Oil Sequences 2012 define the minimum quality level of service-fill oils that ACEA members demand for using these oils in their vehicles.

Oil and lubricant producers can register and self-certify their products (see page 3 of the Oil Sequences document) in order to make claims that the oil(s) meet the ACEA requirements.

ACEA encourages oil suppliers to register their products on this page (see “ACEA Engine Oil Registration” link) so we can better trace who is making ACEA claims and where those oils are being marketed.

ACEA does not certify oils, nor license, nor register, compliance certificates. Oil manufacturers are themselves responsible for carrying out all oil testing and evaluation according to recognised engine lubricant industry standards and practices. In particular the ACEA European Oil Sequences refer to many standard CEC tests.

Oil manufacturers are also responsible and liable for all claims made that their products meet the ACEA Oil Sequences. \

[b]ACEA Engine Oil Registration
Registration of Engine Oils with ACEA Performance Claims

Oil Companies may use claims against the ACEA Oil Sequences on a self-certification basis.

Engine Oils claiming any of the ACEA oil sequences should be registered as soon as possible after their launch into the market.

ACEA encourages oil marketers wishing to use the ACEA claims to register new products on this website. Only publicly domain information will be asked for during registration. Some information is mandatory and some are optional. ACEA strongly encourages the author to complete them as well. Once registered, no further changes are possible. Registrations can be declared obsolete by the author. If claims are no longer needed, oil companies are asked to declare them obsolete. If claims are continued to be used after three years, re-registration is needed. After registration, the author has access to all of the registrations they completed at any time.

We are also told that some oils with ACEA C certifications are unsuitable for some engines and then the oil manufacturer will claim that their engine oil is very suitable for all modern engines, petrol and Diesel with DPF and turbo charged engines from 2010 upwards.

ACEA C1 Stable, stay-in-grade oil intended for use as catalyst compatible oil in vehicles with DPF and TWC in high performance car and light van diesel and gasoline engines requiring low friction, low viscosity, low SAPS oils with a minimum HTHS viscosity of 2.9 mPa.s. These oils will increase the DPF and TWC life and maintain the vehicles fuel economy. Warning: these oils have the lowest SAPS limits and are unsuitable for use in some engines. Consult owner manual or handbook if in doubt.
ACEA C2 Stable, stay-in-grade oil intended for use as catalyst compatible oil in vehicles with DPF and TWC in high performance car and light van diesel and gasoline engines designed to be capable of using low friction, low viscosity oils with a minimum HTHS viscosity of 2.9mPa.s. These oils will increase the DPF and TWC life and maintain the vehicles fuel economy. Warning: these oils are unsuitable for use in some engines. Consult owner manual or handbook if in doubt.
ACEA C3 Stable, stay-in-grade oil intended for use as catalyst compatible oil in vehicles with DPF and TWC in high performance car and light van diesel and gasoline engines, with a minimum HTHS viscosity of 3.5mPa.s. These oils will increase the DPF and TWC life. Warning: these oils are unsuitable for use in some engines. Consult owner manual or handbook if in doubt.
ACEA C4 Stable, stay-in-grade oil intended for use as catalyst compatible oil in vehicles with DPF and TWC in high performance car and light van diesel and gasoline engines requiring low SAPS oil with a minimum HTHS viscosity of 3.5mPa.s. These oils will increase the DPF and TWC life. Warning: these oils are unsuitable for use in some engines. Consult owner manual or handbook if in doubt.

Most cars driven in Nigeria are North American cars. In this case, I always check for the API category of engine oil i use in comparison to the model year of the car.

Forte visco 2000, Mobile XHP, Total Quartz 5000, Oando oleum SL and other that are 20w50 are SL. At least their categories are good for most American cars on the road except for the fact that the grading is not the within the specified 5w20, 5w30 and 5w40 most cars recommend. One example of SJ category oil is Forte Super V and Oando Xl.
Re: Total, Forte, Conoil, oando, Mobil1 And MRS Synthetics Oils by sooperrescue(m): 1:57am On Nov 16, 2016
You are right about that. Super Visco and OandoXL are good but from available research, these oils turn to gel within two months and less than 3000 miles. When I said, we choose TOTAL Q9000, it means that it conforms to its claims as a good synthetic oil for its own category and the ACEA certifications which it claims to have, is ideal and suitable for all types of Engines. We want to know why we are going foreign in our choice of Engine oils and I am the No 1 culprit because the cars that I currently work on, which like you stated, are North American Cars and they require Castrol and we feel there must be an alternative to Castrol oil when servicing AUDIs, BMWs, LAND ROVERs amongst our local oil labels so that we don't destroy our engines in the name of buy made in Nigeria products. TOTAL Q9000's claims have been verified but we dont know if it has the General Motors 2 Dexos certification. We will get that information from their Lube Engineers soon. We are moving to FORTE 10000 Synth and while awaiting the specs sheet from them, we can take your comments on your experience using TOTAL Q9000 on your engines.

We have received the report for FORTE 10000 synth, Forte oil synthetic flagship. According to the group, the oil is imported, wholly packaged in gallons from the European oil producer. We were not able to confirm if it is BP that supplies the oil to FORTE but we know that British Petroleum produces Castrol oil, the wonderful oil that does wonders to your engines. But before then, we need to analyze all the OEM claims that the local oil labels paste on their gallons.
MB 229.1 & 229.3[/b
Almost all local oil labels claims that their oils meets this specification. What does it mean? Here we go to http://www.oilspecifications.org/mercedes_mb.php and read what they mean by the specs.

MB Mercedes Oil Specifications

The name of the MB specifications derives from the Mercedes Bluebook scheme, divided by numbered paragraphs and pages. It is used by dealers to identify the products certified by the manufacturer and their correct application on the engines.

MB 226.5
This specification is required for Mercedes vehicles with gasoline engines supplied by the Renault-Nissan Alliance. Specification requirements are similar to MB 229.5.
MB 226.51
This specification is based on RN0720 and is recommended for Mercedes vehicles with DPF fitted diesel engines supplied by Renault. Oils meeting this specification have very good thermal stability and after treatment compatibility.
MB 229.1
For petrol and diesel engines. Minimum quality required ACEA A2/B2 with additional limits on engine.
MB 229.3
For petrol and diesel engines. Minimum quality required ACEA A3 / B3 / B4 and MB 229.1. It can only certify 0/ 5 W-x oils.

MB 229.31
Multigrade, low SAPS engine oil, advised for both diesel and petrol engines of Mercedes Benz, Smart and Chrysler. Only low viscosity engine oils which can realize a 1,0% saving on used fuel in the M111 Fuel economy test (CEC L-54-T-96) can get this approval. In this test the fuel savings are compared to the performance of the Reference oil RL 191 (SAE 15W-40).
MB 229.5
MB sheet for energy conserving oils for certain car and van engines. Approved oils must meet ACEA A3, B3 and B4 specification and some additional demands by Daimler Chrysler AG. Oil must be on the approval list.
MB 229.51
Low SAPS Long Life engine oil for diesel engines with particle filter meeting emission EU-4 -> standards.
MB 229.52
Oils meeting this specifications must have lower ash content, at least 1% better fuel economy compared to the requirements of MB 229.31 and MB 229.51 and better oxidation stability for biofuel compatibility. Can also be used where an MB 229.31 or an MB 229.51 oil is required. Just like MB 229.5 and MB 229.51 this spec requires a long life oil.

The bolded is what almost all local oil labels claims that their oil is good for. My question is this why will these manufacturers of the local synthetic oils choose the European formula over the American standard oil knowing fully well that 80% of the vehicles in the country are from North American since 2000 when the US policy changed on used cars leaving America. Why are they going for the minimum quality? Will the owner of a Mercedes Benz car gladly use our local oil labels?

VW 502.00/505.00. http://www.my-gti.com/2534/volkswagen-oil-standard-502-00-505-00-approved-oils
No Local oil label is on the list except the Mobil 1 group.

The current and previous API Service Categories are summarized in convenient charts. Vehicle owners should refer to their owner's manuals before consulting these charts. Oils may have more than one performance level. For automotive gasoline engines, the latest engine oil service category includes the performance properties of each earlier category. If an automotive owner's manual calls for an API SJ or SL oil, an API SM oil will provide full protection. For diesel engines, the latest category usually - but not always - includes the performance properties of an earlier category.

Service Category API CJ-4 describes oils for use in high-speed four-stroke cycle diesel engines designed to meet 2007 model year on-highway exhaust emission standards as well as for previous model years. These oils are especially effective at sustaining emission control system durability where particulate filters and other advanced aftertreatment systems are used. For more information on API CJ-4 including frequently asked questions, please visit www.apicj-4.org.

ILSAC
Gasoline
Diesel
Gasoline Engines
For automotive gasoline engines, the latest ILSAC standard or API Service Category includes the performance properties of each earlier category and can be used to service older engines where earlier category oils were recommended. (Follow your vehicle manufacturer’s recommendations on oil performance levels)

While we are not digressing from our topic, we just want to inform motorists using the mineral oils that they should be careful about the oils their mecs use on their cars. This is a random search on the oils available in your local oil shop. Here are the API warning for such oils and please anyone with other oil labels should please put it up for motorists to see and run away from them. If we dont buy them, there will be no market for them.

The American Petroleum Institute has declared these oils obsolete.

We spoke to Standards Organisation of Nigeria yesterday about their label on Forte VStatic and they claim that their label is there because the product was registered and not tested. Forte is the one that claims the oil to be what it is. Forte oil Lube manager said that the fact that it is SG does not make the oil obsolete, that it can still be used by motorists whose vehicles are before 1993. I told them to either withdraw the product or put a caveat that this oil is not suitable for cars made after 1993. He said that is not possible. What he refused to understand is that even owners of cars made before 1993 use drum oil on their engines. He refused to disclose the name of the company who produces their 10000 synth abroad because all their OEM claims are not accurate. An oil sold publicly is being shielded from the public about its claims. We are still investigating.

We have to do it otherwise Motorists will keep changing their engines. When I see Toyota Engines being changed, I ponder over the matter and realised that the owner must have been ignorant of the fluid it uses. We now concentrate on Forte oil 10000 synth. The oil claimed to have some OEM specifications

Performance Levels
SAE 5W/40
API SN/CF
ACEA A3/B4
MB 229.1 & 229.3
VW 502.00/505.00
BMW LL-01
GM-LL-B-025
Porsche A40
PSA B71 2296
Renault RN 0700 / RN 0710

We checked their VW motor oil list and they were nowhere to be found. The Lube Manager claimed that it was a company in the Netherlands that produces the oil for them and when I asked for the name, he declined and said that he will not give me the name. An oil sold to the general public?
For GM OEM specifications, we found another matter entirely.

GM Dexos 1
Designed with gasoline engines in mind GM Dexos 1 replaces the GM-LL-A-025, GM6094M and GM4718M specifications. This specification is usually recommended for GM vehicles built for the North American and Asian markets. Compared to ILSAC GF-5 it has stricter requirements regarding piston deposit formation, aeration, oxidation stability, wear, low-temperature pumpability and volatility.
GM Dexos 2
The GM Dexos 2 specification is meant to be the replacement for both GM-LL-A-025 (gasoline) and GM-LL-B-025 (diesel) specifications for the European market. Oils meeting GM Dexos 2 are required for vehicles manufactured from MY2011 onward but they are also backward compatible with older models. This specification is built on the ACEA C3 standard but also contains elements from the ILSAC GF-4 deposit formation test and low-temperature sludge build-up test.
Legacy Motor Oil Specifications

GM-LL-A-025
Special GM approval for long-life engine oil for gasoline engines. Viscosity is SAE 0W-30. Product meets ACEA A3/B3. Drain interval can be as long as 30 000 kms. Recommended for vehicles built before MY2011.
GM-LL-B-025
Special GM approval for long-life engine oil for diesel engines. Viscosity is SAE 5W-40. Product meets ACEA A3/B3/B4. Drain interval can be as long as 50 000 kms. Recommended for vehicles built before MY2011.

Forte 10000 Synth GM OEM GM-LL-B-025 is for diesel engines only. That means that you can use the oil for only GM diesel engines and not gasoline engines. Like we told the Lubes guy, it is better they put a caveat to those buying their oil informing them on which model of car engines their oil is suitable for. I have not seen any GM car that is diesel powered, maybe there is but it is very minimal in the country for the oil to be classified for use on GM diesel cars.
MB 229.1 & 229.3

It is the minimum quality approval and not the energy conserving quality.
Porsche A40.
The oil is not on the list as we dont know the name of the producer in Europe. And the good thing about Porsche oils is that some of the approved oils are for some specific regions and only few passed the worldwide approval. Forte Synth 10000 is not on the list unless the lube manager provides us with the name, but for now, it is an SN, suitable for Nothing.

BMW Longlife ll 01
BMW BMW Oil Specifications

BMW Longlife-98 (BMW LL-98)
Special long-life engine oil, approved by BMW. Also meets ACEA A3/B3, API SJ/CD, EC SAE 5W-40. Usually required for BMWs manufactured before MY 2002. Obsolete since 2009.
BMW Longlife-01 (BMW LL-01)
Special BMW approval for fully synthetic long-life oil. Product meets ACEA A3/B3 and API: SJ/CD EC-II. Usually required for BMWs built after MY 2002. Can also be used where a BMW Longlife-98 oil is recommended.

BMW Longlife-01 FE (BMW LL-01 FE)
Fully synthetic long-life oil with fuel economy properties. Oils meeting this specifications must have a low HTHS viscosity to meet the manufacturer's fuel economy requirements. These oils are only suitable for the following engines: N1x, N2x, N54, N55, N63, N74.
BMW Longlife-04 (BMW LL-04)
Special BMW approval for fully synthetic long-life oil. Viscosities are SAE 0W-30, 0W-40, 5W-30 and 5W-40. Usually required for BMWs equipped with a diesel particulate filter (DPF). Can also be used where a BMW Longlife-98 or BMW Longlife-01 oil is recommended.
BMW Longlife-12 (BMW LL-12)
Special motor oil for certain approved gasoline engines and the following diesel engines only: Nx7K1, Nx7U1, Nx7O1 from model year 2013. Not suitable for engines with 2 or 3 turbos.
For BMW, the longlife 01 is an API SJ specs and for cars built after 2002. Forte oil synth 10000. And according to the BMW specs, the oil must meet ACEA A3/B3. The local oil is ACEA A3/B4.
We are still investigating.....

Our investigations for today is that Total q9000 is sharing the similar oem approval with Forte synth and as suchthe Q9000 is not ok as they claimed. The Q9000 sold in France is not the same grade with the one sold in Nigeria. We will talk to them tomorrow to hear from them why we have low quality SN....
wow thanks for this info. I was considering using Total q9000 for my next service due to the high cost of mobil 1 but now I'm thinking of using Valvoline Synpower. What's your take on Valvoline Synpower
Re: Total, Forte, Conoil, oando, Mobil1 And MRS Synthetics Oils by sooperrescue(m): 12:30pm On Nov 25, 2016
What brand of car do you want to use the oil on? Valvoline synpower. I am supposed to investigate the local oil labels first. Why not try mobil 1 usa. It is just a twice in a year activity and it will take your engine to another level. Gazzuz and Autotrader 2 are selling good stuff.

use on a 2000 camry. Currently I'm using mobil 1 AFS(from Gazzuzz) but since the dollar wahala the price has really gone up so I'm just looking for an alternative and Valvoline synpower and Total q9000 came to mind. I read reviews that it's it's very good motor oil(Valvoline), I just want your opinion

It is very good. Just check the certifications at the rear of the bottle and you will pity Nigerian motorists for the chemical that we are using as engine oils.

The results of the tests conducted on this sample meet the requirements of an API SN, ILSAC GF-5, SAE 5W-30 engine oil.
Nigerian oil Suitable for Nothing SN are still producing oil for 2002 BMW.

One of the few TOTAL Q9000 that is ILSAC 5 compliant. You will never find it in Total outlets in Nigeria. But it is still not compliant with GM 2 dexos but better than the junk oils being packaged by the local oil labels.

MotorOilMatters.org
The API Certification Mark, also known as the “Starburst”

An oil displaying this mark meets the current engine protection standard and fuel economy requirements of the International Lubricant Specification Advisory Committee (ILSAC), a joint effort of U.S. and Japanese automobile manufacturers. Automobile manufacturers recommend oils that carry the API Certification Mark. See the ILSAC STANDARD FOR PASSENGER
CAR ENGINE OILS chart on the next page for descriptions of current and obsolete ILSAC standards.

The API Service Symbol, also known as the “Donut”
1. Performance Level
Motor oils designed for cars, vans, and light trucks with gasoline engines fall under API’s “S” (Service) categories. Motor oils designed for heavydutytrucks and vehicles with diesel engines fall under API’s “C” (Commercial) categories. Please see the Gasoline Engines and Diesel
Engines charts on the next pages for descriptions of current andobsolete API service categories.
2. Viscosity Grade
The measure of an oil’s ability to flow at certain temperatures. Vehicle requirements may vary. Follow your vehicle manufacturer’s
recommendations on SAE oil viscosity.
3. Resource Conserving and Energy Conserving
These designations apply to oils intended for gasoline-engine cars, vans, and light trucks. Widespread use of “Resource Conserving” or “Energy
Conserving” oils may result in an overall savings of fuel in the vehicle fleet as a whole.
4. Multiple Performance Levels
Oils designed for diesel engine service might also meet gasoline engine service. For these oils the designation is “C” category first followed by
the “S” category. “C” category oils have been formulated primarily for diesel engines and may not provide all of the performance requirements
consistent with vehicle manufacturers’ recommendations for gasoline fueled engines.
5. The API Service Symbol with CI-4 Plus
The “CI-4 PLUS” designation identifies oils formulated to provide a higher level of protection against soot-related viscosity increase and viscosity
loss due to shear in diesel engines. When originally introduced, CI-4 PLUS identified CI-4 oils meeting a higher level of performance. CJ-4 oils
include all CI-4 PLUS performance requirements. CI-4 PLUS appears in the lower portion of the API Service Symbol “Donut.”
GET MORE FROM YOUR MOTOR OIL.
Follow your vehicle manufacturer’s oil change recommendations. This includes using recommended SAE oil viscosity and ILSAC or API performance standard. If you find it necessary to mix brands of oil, use same viscosity grade and API service category to maintain performance.
Ask for API licensed oil whenever you have your oil changed.
Look for API Certification Marks every time you buy motor oil. For more information visit MotorOilMatters.org. Learn about chemical additives in motor oil at AmericanChemistry.com

DIESEL ENGINES (Follow your vehicle manufacturer’s recommendations on oil performance levels)
Category Status Service
CJ-4 Current For high-speed four-stroke cycle diesel engines designed to meet 2010 model year on-highway and Tier 4 nonroad
exhaust emission standards as well as for previous model year diesel engines. These oils are formulated for use in all
applications with diesel fuels ranging in sulfur content up to 500 ppm (0.05% by weight). However, the use of these oils
with greater than 15 ppm (0.0015% by weight) sulfur fuel may impact exhaust aftertreatment system durability and/or
drain interval. CJ-4 oils are especially effective at sustaining emission control system durability where particulate filters
and other advanced aftertreatment systems are used. Optimum protection is provided for control of catalyst poisoning,
particulate filter blocking, engine wear, piston deposits, low- and high-temperature stability, soot handling properties,
oxidative thickening, foaming, and viscosity loss due to shear. API CJ-4 oils exceed the performance criteria of API CI-4
with CI-4 PLUS, CI-4, CH-4, CG-4 and CF-4 and can effectively lubricate engines calling for those API Service Categories.
When using CJ-4 oil with higher than 15 ppm sulfur fuel, consult the engine manufacturer for service interval.
CI-4 Current Introduced in 2002. For high-speed, four-stroke engines designed to meet 2004 exhaust emission standards implemented
in 2002. CI-4 oils are formulated to sustain engine durability where exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) is used and are
intended for use with diesel fuels ranging in sulfur content up to 0.5% weight. Can be used in place of CD, CE, CF-4,
CG-4, and CH-4 oils. Some CI-4 oils may also qualify for the CI-4 PLUS designation.
CH-4 Current Introduced in 1998. For high-speed, four-stroke engines designed to meet 1998 exhaust emission standards. CH-4 oils
are specifically compounded for use with diesel fuels ranging in sulfur content up to 0.5% weight. Can be used in place
of CD, CE, CF-4, and CG-4 oils.
CG-4 Obsolete OBSOLETE: Introduced in 1995. For severe duty, high-speed, four-stroke engines using fuel with less than 0.5% weight
sulfur. CG-4 oils are required for engines meeting 1994 emission standards. Can be used in place of CD, CE,
and CF-4 oils.
CF-4 Obsolete OBSOLETE: Introduced in 1990. For high-speed, four-stroke, naturally aspirated and turbocharged engines. Can be used
