Hello Doc,
Thanks for the great work you are doing here. Pls we are considering prostate surgery for my dad. Kindly help me with how long the post surgery recovery lasts and the average costs for the procedure and possibly a recommendation for good but reasonably priced hospitals in Lagos that you may know that specializes in the procedure. Thank you.
feel_me:

Hi Ziga,
Pls I askd the quest about prostate surgery above, Pls I will appreciate your response. thanks,

I'm sorry, but i don't have any information about the average cost in Nigeria.

But, i know it will be least expensive in government specialist hospitals. As per finding a place that specializes in the procedure, you should understand that hospitals that treat those conditions regularly, will have more experience, and will therefore do it best.

The best that i think you'll find in Lagos will be the university teaching hospitals. A lot of people prefer not to go to Government hospitals for very good reasons, so what i can suggest is you can try and find out if any of the urologists that practice in these teaching hospitals has a private practice.

About the post surgery recovery, this will be very variable.

It will depend on the reason for the surgery.

It will depend on the stage of the disease being treated. More advanced diseases are harder to treat.

It will depend on the state of health of the patient. Someone who has other medical conditions in addition to the prostate disease will obviously take longer to recover.

But in the hands of a good, qualified surgeon, you can hope for good /early recovery time. Make sure you communicate very well with the surgeon and have him explain the procedure, possible complications as well as his expectations to you before you give consent.

Goodluck.

Blood is not a normal content of semen,  It sounds like it could be an infection.

Are you sexually active? How many partners? Unprotected intercourse?

Go see a doctor who will be able to evaluate other symptoms that you may be having. e.g pain during e.jaculation, discharge from your urethra.
Samples of your urine, or any discharge you might have may/ may not be collected, and you may need antibiotics.

I believe you can get it done in Nigeria without a referral. But in some other countries, a referral might be required.

Skin conditions can be caused by a wide variety of things. Bacteria, fungi, allergies to things that make contact with your body, and even diseases in other systems of the body.

Unfortunately, skin problems are very difficult to diagnose without the doctor seeing what the skin lesions look like.

So, the only help i can give is to advice you to go visit a doctor/dermatologist, so that the condition can be diagnosed and the appropriate treatment, given.

Goodluck.

Can you tell me what you really mean by pelvic pain and swollen pelvis. What part of the body are you talking about? bone? lower abdomen? groin?

The symptoms you had (chest pain, cough, difficulty with breathing) suggest pneumonia, but there are other conditions that may mimic a pneumonia in presentation.

In addition, if you have been having a fever, a pneumonia is a strong suspect. A chest X-ray, sputum tests, and blood tests may be helpful with confirming the diagnosis.

I believe your doctor already started you on antibiotics for pneumonia, so if you have been having a fever, that should stop. The other symptoms may resolve slowly because it takes some time for the body to heal itself after the antibiotics have cleared the infection.

Pneumonia is an infection and the organisms that cause it are carried in the air. I think the story about catching a cold/pneumonia from exposure to cold environment is a myth!!

Eating a healthy diet with fruits, vegetables and proteins will help your body to recover.

Hi Doc,

My wife's period is very regular in cycle length (26~28 days each) and number of days (5 days). However, this month she had it for only 2 days and the flow was not lighter than usual. What could be wrong? She was being treated for Candidiasis a few days before her period.
Also, would you know if pregnancy test kits are available in Nigeria?

Many thanks

For people with minimal body fat, veins might be visible. But what i think you are trying to say is that you feel you are underweight.

You can calculate your BMI via this link to know if you are underweight http://www.nhlbisupport.com/bmi/

The only solution to gaining weight is to eat more food more times in a day.

Try and eat a balanced diet with fruits, vegetables and water.

Vitamin supplements may help. And also, develop an exercise plan, because you do not want to become overweight.

Be careful about drugs you use in order to gain weight, because i know people can have access to some prescription drugs that may have harmful side effects in Naija.

I don't think the treatment for candidiasis could have resulted in the change in her periods.

I'm guessing you meant to say that the flow was much lighter than usual. She can get a pregnancy test to make sure she is not pregnant and yes, home pregnancy tests are available in Naija.

Sometimes, changes in the menstrual cycle may only be due to some stress. . . But there may be other serious conditions that require early medical intervention causing it. Anyhow, the first thing to do will be to rule in / out a pregnancy.

Hope that helped.

Lower abdominal pain/pelvic pain in a woman of child bearing age can be caused by a lot of things.

These various conditions have various symptoms that will be too long to cover here.

However, if she has missed her period, she needs to get a pregnancy test, and if the pregnancy test is positive, she needs a scan to confirm that the pregnancy is in the right place.

Vagina.l discharge may indicate a pelvic infection
Fibroids may cause pain or even abnormal menstrual bleeding
Appendicitis can be a possibility with its own sets of signs and symptoms

I would advise that she visit her doctor/gynecologist
