OJUcrook:
Philip Effiong is the real Civil war hero on the Biafran side. He did not run away, he stood his ground and surrendered because he knew the odds were stacked against the Biafrans.

However, Ojukwu, the initiator of the war, could not equip his army properly, he could not feed his civilians adequately yet he once boasted before the commencement of hostilities that he had the largest army in Black Africa and that the other side(Nigeria) will be shocked as to what they will get from him. Ojukwu boasted that he would fight till the last drop of his blood but when the federal forces closed in on him, he ignominiously ran away to Abidjan after commndeering a plane that was meant to airlift sick Biafran children, abandoning the civilians he swore to protect.

Alhaji Shehu Shagari later granted Ojukwu amnesty in 1982 after twelve years in exile. In 1983 Ojukwu contested in the Senatorial election, he also contested in the 2003 and 2007 Presidential elections but lost woefully on all occassions.

It is highly preposterous that a man who led a war against Nigeria, came back to Nigeria and participated in elections in the same country he fought against
mumu like u had Britain n Russia not to Nigeria aid ,ojukwu would have achieved wot he boasted of

As much as I regard Phillip Effiong, I find it hard to believe that he would be easily swayed to accept Ojukwu's plan of Biafra with so many odds against them.

Obong (Major-General) Phillip Asuquo Effiong, Akangkang Ibiono Ibom may you continue to rest in peace, in the bosom of the Most High God. You were an uncommon soldier, a man of principle whose humanity was not in doubt. sad

A man of courage, compassion and integrity who did the best he could, to end the carnage of the civil war, and save further lives from being lost at a time when it mattered most. You took a step many could not have taken - a step that some thought was unpopular, but necessary. Your courage will always be remembered. For this reason, many of us remain thankful, and will always be. We remember you with gratitude. We remember you with warmth. We remember you with love. You will always live on in our hearts. cry

DO NOT STAND AT MY GRAVE AND WEEP | by Mary Elizabeth Frye

Do not stand at my grave and weep.
I am not there; I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.

Do not stand at my grave and cry;
I am not there; I did not die

Go and read Nigerian history well before coming online to show your ignorance. The whole trouble started when Gowon broke the agreement he signed in Ghana with Ojukwu. What kind of 'police action' requires 3 Divisions of the Nigerian Army? Long before Ojukwu invaded the mid west, the Nigerian Army was already bombing parts of Nsukka and Ogoja. The war was already on before Ojukwu got into the mid west.

The 3 million people you are talking about were killed by Nigeria just because the people said they dont want 'one Nigeria' any more. Ojukwu fought a war to liberate his from Northern controlled Nigeria. There is no shame in anyone fighting for their freedom, even at the cost of millions of lives. The allied forces kost nearly 40 million people in the second world war to get freedom in Europe.

Ojukwu was a freedom fighter who fought the combined military might of Britain, Russia, Nigeria and Egypt and held firm for 3 years. When the end was near and the center coukd no longer hold, he exited. If you were waiting for him to stay back and get himself captured and killed in other to prove he is brave, keep waiting. Ojukwu would have been a fool to let this happen.

Ojukwu fough and lost. When you cant beat them, you join them and thats what he did by returning to join politics.

There can never be any shame on Ojukwus part for fighting for the freedom of his people.

Does the highlighted comments express the hallmarks of a hero

Ojukwu did not fight any other army other than the Nigerian army. All these stories about all the superpowers fighting biafra at the same time are pure undiluted lies.
Ojukwu led ibos to war and abandoned them at the most critical moment, that is the truth. Effiong was far more courageous than Ojukwu.

Ojukwu tried for us but he executed the war poorly. Testimonies from his own Chief of General Staff, Alexander Madiebo, Cyprian Ekwensi (Divided We Stand), Tony Ubesie (Isi Akwu Dara n'ala), and others suggest he ran a one man show. Unfortunately he didn't learn from the mistakes of Adolf Hitler and Napoleon Bonaparte who were both defeated by England : same England that made sure Gowon used their system of dispiriting the populace to win the war.

Once the enemy achieves the objective of starving the civilian population, the war is as good as over. Ojukwu lost the war to hunger and not the Nigerian military.

Afonjass.

That is the fact. Philip Effiong bravely stood behind and ended the slaughter when his "oga at the top" who had sworn to be the last soldier to carry a rifle in Biafra took off from Uli Airport and ran to Cote D'Ivoire. I lost relatives in that war fighting for Biafra so to anyone who quotes me, thunder go fire that person!

For those saying Ojukwu fought and lost,

1. The ONLY Biafran offensive throughout the war consisted of more than 5,000 Biafran Soldiers was led by Yoruba man named Col. Victor Banjo.

2. The Biafran offensive of more than 5,000 soldiers was stopped at Ore by 179 Yoruba Soldiers led by Colonel Oyinlade Iluyomade.

3. The 3rd Marine Commando, that eventually spearheaded the end of the three-year war in January 1970, was led by another Yoruba man named Benjamin Adekunle.

4. After Ojukwu ran away to Abidjan dresses like an aunty, the Biafran army surrendered to another man named Olusegun Obasanjo.

Let no one distort history, while none of Ojukwu's children or relations died of starvation during the war, Millions of Biafran children died of kwashiokor and other malnutrition-related diseases. When food supplies were dropped by airplanes, instead of distributing the food to the hungry Biafrans, Ojukwu and his soldiers sold these food to those who could afford it.

When the relief agencies dropped used clothing for the Biafran population, these same Biafran Soldiers seized and sold these clothes to those who could afford them.

The true heroes of Biafra are men like Banjo, Men like Effiong, Biafran men who fought with just a rifle and two bullets and not opportunistic and cowardly turncoats like Ojukwu who led his soldiers into slaughter and ran away only to came back to collect pension from the Nigerian Government.

yorubas are born warriors, naturally offensive and ruthless but not quick to react
The Hausas can't hold Nigeria together without the yorubas, that's a fact

Characteristics Of A Hero

Courage
The first and the foremost quality of a hero is his courage. A hero always overcomes his fears and confronts any challenge head on. Even the faintest tinge of fear doesn’t linger in the heart of a hero.

Virtuosity
Virtuosity is the key aspect of a hero’s character. A hero is never foolishly audacious. He always is judicious and well skilled to cite and cease the opportunities, which present themselves on the way towards his destination. A hero is laden with all the essential faculties, which are instrumental to accomplish what he seeks.

Sacrifice
Sacrifice is a quality that stands unique from all the other virtues which makes a hero noble in his deeds. He or she is always quite willing to cast off the predilections and personal comforts whenever they become indispensable for a higher cause or for the welfare of others.

Determination
For a hero the word “Impossible” always decomposes to yield “I am possible.” A hero is unflinching in his or her determination and believes in his ability without the whiff of dubiety.

Focus
Being focused is also one of the most prominent qualities of a hero. It seems as if all the heroes that have walked on the surface of the earth have been born with definite motives. All their life they hardly lose focus of what they want to achieve or establish. For instance, it appears that Mahatma Gandhi was born with the sole purpose of driving the British forces out of then enslaved India and to preach the world the ideology of nonviolence.

Compassion
A true hero is always empathetic, benevolent and shows a great deal of compassion and tenderness to those ailing or in distress. He or she keeps aside thoughts those are oriented to the self and embraces an attitude that serves others.

Perseverance
This quality is what that makes the hero special. Even if they encounter failure on their way, they are determined to get over it and fight till they achieve success. They do not give up simply rather they are focused to withstand all the consequences that they may encounter in their path.

Dedication
The heroes are selflessly dedicated to their task and will thus focus their actions towards its achievement. They whole-heartedly dedicate themselves to the task, which is set, and work towards its completion.

Honesty
In all the endeavors that a hero takes up, honesty forms the base of all his efforts. This honesty earns him the respect of others and helps him leading his followers to the desired goal.

Loyalty
A hero is considered to possess fierce loyalties in the sense that he is faithful to whatever tasks they take up. His commitment to a particular cause leads him way beyond others citing an example for others to follow him.

Intrepidity
The heroes have a courage that is unshaken despite anything that comes in their path of their focused success. They are determined to fight challenges with resolute courageousness.

Conviction
Heroes have a strong conviction as they have strong beliefs regarding a particular situation. It is a set of unshakable thoughts or beliefs, which cannot be altered by any chance.

Fortitude
Fortitude can be defined as a habit that is involved in encountering a deed that is dangerous with a bright spirit that is adopted with passive courage.

Responsibility
Whatever be the type of responsibility entailed on them, they take it up with utmost sincerity and take it to its logical conclusion.

Wisdom
Wisdom is the most desired quality, which a leader must possess. A fool can lead a horde of beasts but not human beings set on a definite purpose. Only a wise and astute person can do so. Whatever a hero maybe—a warrior, a preacher—wisdom is always an attribute that all of them possess.

A hero is not born, he is self-made. Above mentioned are some of the most fundamental qualities, which a hero invariably possesses. We all do possess some of the virtues, which have been explained above. However, what sets a hero apart from the hoi polloi is that he can be said to be the highest or the perfect embodiment of all of these virtues.

Considering that your leader Awolowo gave up without a fight right in Lagos, Yoruba land and became 'second fiddle' to a boy young enough to be his son (Gowon) I think that Ojukwu did well in comparison.

Yorubas are the only people who surrendered their land before the fight even started.
In fact, in addition to what you said, the Afonjas are a typical illustration of the saying that "Cowards die many times before their real death". Lol!

ThankGod he successfully returned the Old Eastern Region back to Nigeria and thus, ended the age of Biafra forever.

If it didn't happen in the 1960s when regional government and hatred was the order of the day, it surely can't happen now. We have come too far as a nation.

Philip Effiong is the real biafran hero. If not for him, the Military government of Nigeria then would have slaughtered an additional 3 million easterners. He was a very brave man to have stood his ground instead of running away like a coward just like Ojukwu did. I watched a video of Ojukwu speech just before the war started, I watched how he was boasting of having the largest military, he was boasting that Nigeria will be surprised with what they will get from him. With the way he was boasting, u would think he had a Nuclear bomb ready that can wipeout the Nigerian army with just one strike. I have never seen a military leader boast the way Ojukwu did. But unfortunately, he had to run away like a coward, instead of finishing what he started with Gowon.

Keep deceiving urself, after all we practiced federalism back then, so the federal government did not stop the eastern region from being self-sufficient in food. We did not stop u from producing ur own food. Since the biafrans wanted a war, they should have made sure they were self-sufficient in food. So stop using starvation as an excuse on why u lost the war, because even if food filled the table of an average biafran then, Nigeria would have still won the war.

Am sorry to say this, but hitler was a brave man than Ojukwu. When world war 2 was almost coming to an end, and Germany was almost captured, Hitler had the chance to run away. He had a network of underground tunnel that he can easily used to escape, he had the chance of using an aircraft to run away, but he did not. Although his ideology was evil, he still believed in it and died for it, instead of surrendering or get captured by the soviet army or the American army, he preferred to commit suicide rather than admit defeat. That is what Ojukwu could have done considering the fact that he led 3 million souls to their death.
