It’s been 23 years since Living in Bondage kick started the glorious rise of Nollywood, and now the 1992 game changer is set for a massive reboot.

Entertainment/business mogul Charles Okpaleke of Play Entertainment Network, and award-winning Nollywood star, Ramsey Nouah, are collaborating to remake Kenneth Nnebue’s 1992 classic.

The rights to the movie have been purchased by the duo, and production is set to kick off in 2016.

Speaking on the project, Ramsey says, “There is no way you will mention Nollywood without talking about Living in Bondage. It was the kick-starter for the industry I work in today. Its ability to appeal to everyone irrespective of their religious, cultural and social beliefs made it a huge success.




It addressed issues that we couldn't talk about then. Its beauty lies in the language used which is understood by a certain part of the country, yet was watched by many. So why not bring back this great movie in our contemporary world."

Living in Bondage is a delight any day. People will still talk about the way Kenneth Okonkwo killed his wife for money rituals and how he was tormented. Don't forget the likes of Kanayo O. Kanayo and Bob Manuel Udokwu who intrigued us with their roles. All these made the movie a great hit and we are sure that the sequel will do better."

Charles is also super-excited about the movie. "It's not often that we visit our roots and bring our past back to life. Living in Bondage may have its flaws then due to the fact that the industry was still growing. However, bringing those characters back to our present situation will be really interesting and I'm sure it will spark public discourse that will perhaps engineer growth and development in the industry."

The government have to sit up and find a solution to all these homicidal trucks that are falling left, right and centre in Lagos.

It seemed to be raining falling trucks today when when trucks fell at different parts of the state, therby causing massive traffic gridlock.



This one happened along Agege Motor Road, Oshodi. A 40ft trailer fell and blocked the road this morning.

The second one, a fallen Dangote Cement truck, is causing a ruckus both on and offline and it happened at Jakande roundabout, Lekki/Epe expressway. As a result, Ilasan, Costain, Eko bridge, Ijora Badia, Brewries, down to CMS and Akpongbon is locked down. The traffic jam is MAD.

To quote the words of an irate twitter user, it is '"inhuman and diabolical''.

A Nigerian schoolgirl, Victoria Yohanna, was invited by the House of Lords, the second chamber of UK Parliament, to narrate her terrifying ordeal during one of the biggest ever mass abductions carried out by the Boko Haram sect.

According to The Telegraph, a 15-year-old girl was one of more than 400 people abducted by the terrorists during an attack on the north-east Nigerian town of Baga in January.



October 13, Victoria, who managed to escape, will recount her experiences to an audience at the House of Lords. The event will mark the launch of a major new report on the persecution of Christians worldwide, which has been compiled by the charity Aid to the Church in Need.



It is the first time when one of Boko Haram’s thousands of schoolgirl victims has travelled to the UK to narrate her horrible ordeal.

Speaking to journalists ahead of the report’s launch, Victoria told how she was abducted along with her mother and five siblings when insurgents attacked her hometown just after New Year.

“We heard shooting and the sound of bombs in the early hours of the morning, and at first I thought it was the Nigerian army trying to protect us. Then I realised it was Boko Haram. Those Boko Haram members whose duty is to take women and children for their caliphate took our entire family and made us walk on foot to one of their camps,” she said.



Victoria recalled that en route she saw numerous corpses of people who had been killed and beheaded by terrorists.



Then she spent two weeks at a Boko Haram camp in the outskirts of Baga.



“Every morning they took the hostages for training at Islamic school. They would say the Koran is the religion God had for you,” she added.

The girl revealed that she was able to fool the militants into thinking she was a Muslim by pretending to perform the “buta”. Although there were Muslim captives among the hostages who knew she was a Christian, they did not give her away.



One night, when terrorists went out to kidnap more people, Victoria and the rest of her family managed to escape from the camp.



“I knew what had happened to the Chibok schoolgirls and was very scared. Were it not for God we would probably all be dead by now,” she said.

Victoria has been accompanied to the UK by Father Gideon Obasogie, a priest from Maiduguri, where she is now living.



He recalled that when he met the girl for the first time, she found it impossible to narrate her ordeal without breaking down in tears.



“The church has been trying to organise counselling sessions for these victims of Boko Haram. Simply offering them confessional is not enough,” he noted.



Meanwhile, President Muhammadu Buhari has recently hosted the United Kingdom’s Chief of Defence Staff, General Nicholas Houghton. The president told the top security chief that Nigeria still needs more support from the British government in its quest to defeat the terrorists.

It's Global Handwashing Day and we NEWSHELM want to celebrate with you.

Here are a few facts you need to know about handwashing:

When should you wash your hands?
*Before, during, and after preparing food
*Before eating food
*Before and after caring for someone who is sick
*Before and after treating a cut or wound
*After using the toilet
*After changing diapers or cleaning up a child who has used the toilet
*After blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing
*After touching an animal, animal feed, or animal waste
*After touching garbage

What is the right way to wash your hands?

1) Wet your hands with clean, running water (warm or cold), turn off the tap, and apply soap.

2) Lather your hands by rubbing them together with the soap. Be sure to lather the backs of your hands, between your fingers, and under your nails.

3) Scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds. Need a timer? Hum the "Happy Birthday" song from beginning to end twice.

4) Rinse your hands well under clean, running water.

5) Dry your hands using a clean towel or air dry them.


What should you do if you don't have soap and clean, running water?

*Washing hands with soap and water is the best way to reduce the number of microbes on them in most situations. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol. Alcohol-based hand sanitizers can quickly reduce the number of microbes on hands in some situations, but sanitizers do not eliminate all types of germs.

Hand sanitizers may not be as effective when hands are visibly dirty or greasy.

How do you use hand sanitizers?

1) Apply the product to the palm of one hand (read the label to learn the correct amount).

2) Rub your hands together.

3) Rub the product over all surfaces of your hands and fingers until your hands are dry.

While presenting a keynote address yesterday at the first international conference of the African Studies Association of Africa (ASAA) titled, “African Studies in the Twenty-First Century, Past, Present and Future” which took place at the International Conference Centre of the University of Ibadan, former President Olusegun Obasanjo said that when he was President, he derived a form of pleasure whenever he was insulted by his critics.
He said he enjoyed the insults so much that he kept published insults in the archives in his presidential library.
He said:

"If you visit the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library in Abeokuta, you will find thousands of archived newspaper comics and columns meant to spite and insult my person even as a sitting President.

No individual or group of people was ever queried or jailed or repressed for expressing this freedom. Rather, I encouraged them because I derived fun and pleasure from the humour as I know who I am and nobody needs to tell me who and what I am not".

The 8th Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria has announced that the screening and confirmation process of the first batch of ministerial nominees by President Muhammadu Buhari to serve in his cabinet shall be streamed live on the National Assembly website. Www.nass.gov.ng and Www.Senate.gov.ng

Additionally, on Friday, the Senate through its official Twitter account @NGRSenate, has also announced that the general public would be able to send in questions they would like to ask nominees by forwarding same to their Senators using the hashtag: #MinisterialScreening. All questions must be received before 5pm on Monday.

The @NGRSenate Twitter handle will also be providing live tweets throughout the screening process.

Nigerians would recall that the Senate President, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, took office amidst a pledge to reform the Senate and make its processes more transparent, inclusive and visible by employing e-Parliamentary technology in the Upper Chambers. Since then, the Senate President has tasked the Committee on Rules and Business to develop an e-Parliamentary system that can be employed at Senate Plenary sessions.

This screening will create an avenue for Nigerians from all works of life to partake in governance, as the bridge between representatives and constituents will be bridged; with Senators asking questions sourced from Nigerians on Social Media. Additionally, the submitted resumes of candidates will be made available in the public space for Nigerians to examine.

Bloggers and news organizations that are interested in Live Blogging or Live Tweeting, or those interested in plugging into the livestreaming of the Ministerial screening are asked to contact the New Media Office of the Senate President for entry passes to the National Assembly, and the Senate gallery.
