Proselytized Igbos

I coined the word Proselytized - Igbos. Many stopped being Igbo during the Civil war out of fear of genocide and are unable to resume their cultural identity again.

These groups are predominantly found in the South-South and are in each of the 6 SS states. They are usually oil rich and prefer to be called ethnic nationalities which fits the British/ Federal Government propaganda that Igboland has no oil.

Their resolve to remain minorities despite their actual majority status is strengthened by the fact that they shiver to imagine their group in the deprivation of their brothers in the SE, Who are marginalized and viciously maltreated in the scheme of things.

These groups get certain palliatives nay incentives for divorcing themselves from the major Igbo group.

However, like other oil producing ethnicities their lands are despoiled by oil exploration activities, the people are bereft of tangible developmental indices. Their lands are overwhelmed with despoilation from pipeline bursts. Their major source of living being fishing and farming is disturbed, yet the people cannot complain.

They cannot complain because of the crumbs given out to their elites. These vocal and selfish elites scramble for everything from their masters table so that their families can enjoy the soft life they are used to.

Their is a 13% deprivation for these states, 'magnanimously' put in the Constitution by General Sani Abacha but these amount is viciously cornered by Nigeria elites in both the Federal and State governments. In the 1963 constitution, derivation is 50%.

The Ministry of Niger Delta and the Niger Delta Development Commission NDDC are other conduits used to defraud the peoples and governments of the region .

Why the people cannot come together and form a group like South South Igbo Agitation Group or Agitation for Development of Igbo Oil Producing Areas in the South South or Niger Delta Igbo Agitation for Development DIAD like the Ijaws have MEND remains a shock - yet many of the freedom fighters for the upliftment of the Niger Delta are Igbo.

In truth Igbo groups are the largest producers of oil in Nigeria but it is an anathema and even dangerous to voice these truth in Nigeria. Rivers state produces about 20% of the nation's oil and over 70% are Igbo groups, Delta state produces 25% of the nations oil and about 40% are Igbo. These trend is replicated though in smaller percentages in all the states of the South South.

Everybody in Nigeria know that the South South Igbos are the majority in the Niger Delta. However, when an Ikwerre man like Chibuike Amaechi says he is Igbo, he is termed fake Niger Delta but when he says that he is Ikwerre then he is Original Niger Delta.

Few people in Nigeria today agree that the Aniocha, Ikwerre, Abueto, Oshimili, Ika, Ogba, Ekpeye, Ukwuani, Aboh, Ndoni, Abi , Etchie etc are Igbo, fewer people will agree publicly that Governors Liyel Imoke, Nyesom Wike, Chibuike Amaechi, Peter Odili, Ifeanyichukwu Okowa etc are Igbo but in the secret they know and use it against them.

Gov Peter Odili of Rivers state was denied the Presidency and Vice - Presidency of Nigeria at the behest of Clarke and Nuhu Ribadu because he is Igbo though the position was zoned to the South - South were he comes from .

In as much as a system prevails in Nigeria that encourages people to deny their ethnicities, in as much as there is a system that provides uneven playing ground for all, in as much as lies are promoted above truths then the Nigeria of our dreams shall remain a mirage.

Gen Gowon started the division in order to weaken influence of igbo; Ojukwu by creating geo political zones which played out well but the.fact remains that you can't deny your history matter ehat happen. Odili, Amaechi and Wike, Ifeanyi Okowa and Azikiwe Jonathan are not table igbo names. When you see and ijaw name you will know. Igbos are found in some parts of middle belt as well. No matter where you are, that igbo DNA runs in you. The quest to take risk, successful and independent

South-South Igbos do not actually know that if they can come together under one umbrella, they would automatically become the largest and most influential group in the south-south.
Instead they rather prefer to identify with their local govt areas.

SS Igbos control 2 of the top 5 most influential cities in the SS, Asaba & PH. They have let Ijaws become the identity of the SS out of their own foolishness.

Stop generalising .Such comments were made by some uninformed non Ibo minorities in SS.

No reasonable ibo man from SS made such statement except some political lunatics
You can come here in Asaba to do the findings by yourself. Even some non ibo minorities identified with Ipob let alone SS ibos.
The fooool below me should know that I am from Delta.
Stop lumping the whole Delta into your one Nigeria . Speak for your tribe if really you are from Delta.

The younger generation of south south igbos are beginning to change their mentality. Though Igbo denial is still there, BUT it is not as strong as it used to be.

It's not hard for people to look critically at their parents stories and realize that things are not adding up.

How can you speak igbo, your parents and grand parents also speak igbo. Your last name if unchanged is igbo and understandable to most igbos.

Yet you openly and claim that you are not igbo in front of other Nigerians. They will look at you like you are mentally ill. While those who hate igbos will encourage you to continue your denial.

In 1966 when Northerners rose up and started killing Igbos in great numbers, 2 Ukwuni women boarded a bus to flee back to the South. The bus was stopped by Northers searching for Igbos and the occupants were brought down. Despite the two women protesting that they were from the Mid-West Region and not from the East, they were killed. There is no way a none Igbo can differentiate me from Anambra and an Ukumwuani indigenes, we both have Igbo surnames and speak Igbo.

The same goes for Ahaoda, Ikwere, Ogba and others in River state.

That's why when the agitation started in the Eastern Region that Ojukwu should pull the Igbos out of Nigeria, the Igbos of the Mid-West Region, then called Ika-Igbos but today called 'Delta-Igbos, joined the agitation to join their Kith and job in the proposed Biafra. They knew that Nigerians would forever call them Igbos.

After the war, it was to no one's benefit to be known as Igbo. The creation of Bendel and Rivers state so many Igbo speaking people deny being Igbo.

I think that in todays world, Anioma and Rivers state Igbos have realised again that Nigerians will never be able to distinguish between them and any other Igbo unless they wear the name of their state on their forehead all the time.

Igbo is about your surname, ancestral language and culture. We are all one, Igbo is Igbo. State creation does not change that.

So true. The problem with the deniers is that they tend to be a very loud minority. The majority in this current generation see themselves as igbos just like any other south easterners.

At this point, it's beginning to look stupid and mischievous for anyone to continue their delusions and denials.

State is just an artificial Political creation it doesn't and shouldn't demacate a people in the naija case it was targeted at the Igbos and many a fool fell for it so as to be accepted and not malign politically and socially. So the enemy has divided us into Igbos in the south south and Igbos in the south east and play us against each other using the 'OUR OYEL CARD' and many Igbos were deceived ESP our kin from the other side of the Niger.
