So Chelsea is back in general population after a month of heat-induced isolation...and by the way Spike, the dog with 9 lives, survived yet another deadly one, thanks to my Vet. This time the diagnosis was Bufotoxin Envenomation, or in much simpler terms 'Toad Venom Poisoning.' Never knew toads could be that deadly, I mean we used to handle and disect them way back in 1st year biology, and some people, I understand, even eat them as 'jumping chicken' if I'm not mistaken. Spikes condition was really bad...I had to quickly google up the condition just after my vet attended to him the 1st day and I genuinely became scared for his life having realised just how deadly toads could be to dogs. All that persistent barking and whining (vocalisation), with the subsequent loss of voice, that we thought was due to Chelsea's isolation was actually part of the symptoms of toad venom poisoning. Now I'm really terrified leaving the dogs out at night! 2 Likes

Having survived a dangerous encounter with a toad, Spike is now fully back on evening watch...no more night duty, at least for now anyway. Anyone who knows how to safely keep toads away from the dogs or the compound as a whole, please I'm all ears... 1 Like

She's a very playful girl, but at the same time very alert to any sort of noise or movement in and around the compound; so if you're one of those that go about your business in the form of crawling or flying animals, believe me you don't want to mess around my compound...

Hi do you mean the rott ate toad? Frogs / Toads do enter my compound especially when i open the gate to drive in... Do you mean this is dangerous to dogs? |
Re: Picture Gallery Of My Pack - Rottweilers And DDR German Shepherds by Rany4all(m): 8:43pm On Aug 09, 2018 |
McMayor:We didn't see the dog come in contact with any toad at all and neither did we see a toad, dead or alive, in the compound at the time. The Vet just made a tentative diagnosis because the symptoms were highly suggestive of toad venom poisoning and I also admitted to him that toads and frogs do enter our compound when he asked me. The dog was treated as a case of toad venom poisoning and he responded well to treatment. Not all toads are toxic though and the toxin most times has to come in contact with the dog's mouth or eyes to have an effect on the dog. You can read more about it here: https://m.petmd.com/dog/conditions/toxicity/c_dg_toad_venom_toxicosis 2 Likes |

Rany4all: Thanks for your response and time.. I actually tapped from some of your logics... My BB is 8months going now... Usually she eats very well when she was brought to the house however she had parvo at 4 months and survived however since her recovery she has been very selective of food and as always i have bought VITAPET and EXTREME this are multivitamins however while reading your post... I saw where you mentioned CYPRIGOLD which i know humans use so i decided to try it yesterday, she actually finished her food and licked the plate infact last night she finished a bowl and even this morning she had already finished another bowl before i left the house. I think i will just continue giving her the CYPRIGOLD morning and night. I want her to gain weight and grow normally. |
Re: Picture Gallery Of My Pack - Rottweilers And DDR German Shepherds by Rany4all(m): 2:42pm On Aug 10, 2018 |
McMayor:Glad to have been of some help...but I wouldn't advise you to give your dog cyprigold routinely just as you'd do with vitamins. Short term use to boost the appetite of a dog who's sick, recovering from illness, malnourished or just lost appetite for some reason is okay, but the potential adverse effects are just too much for prolonged use. And by the way, it isn't so healthy for a dog to be overweight. Apart from the many medical conditions being overweight predisposes the dog to, like joint problems, heart conditions, diabetes and so on, it can also negatively affect the fertility of a female dog. As long as your dog's ribs are not visible through its coat and skin, but can be felt with your hands, her weight is okay. I'd suggest you use the cyprigold for 3 days, morning and evening, and make sure you give her same food that she usually rejects during this period. After the 3 days you can then gradually stop it by giving only once on the 4th day and then skip the 5th. Give once on 6th, skip 7th and 8th, and then give the last dose on the 9th day. Hopefully she should have gotten used to the different types of food at the end of the regimen. And please continue with the vitamin supplements. Good luck! 2 Likes 1 Share |
