“So, what they are looking at are the sentiments that the vice presidential candidate can drive for the joint ticket. To a large extent, they are looking at South-East, of course; and I can confirm to you that the South-East has a strong case.

But the major consideration delaying the announcement is that a lot of stakeholders feel that the position should go to South-West. And they’ve been giving lots of reasons for that," said the source.

Atiku Abubakar, presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), will get a running mate from the South-West — although there is a “very strong case” for the South-East — SaharaReporters has been told.

Wednesday is the deadline set by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for parties to submit the names of their presidential candidates and their running mates, meaning a series of meetings have been going on since Sunday when Atiku overwhelmingly beat Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal, to get the PDP ticket.

A source privy to some of the ongoing meetings told Saharareporters that despite the appeal of the South-East, there are three very important reasons why the decision-makers are already leaning towards the South-West.

These are a strong desire to get someone to play the 'Osinbajo role' for Atiku, the need to accommodate the South-West in the national structure, and the electoral value of the region ahead of 2019.

“The whole focus is definitely between South-West and South-East. A lot of dynamics come to play, because the Vice Presidency is not strictly a political position,” said the source, who requested not to be named.

And they’ve been giving lots of reasons for that.

“First, during the Goodluck Jonathan administration, PDP marginalised the region to a large extent. Anyim Pius Anyim (South-East) was the SGF, Namadi Sambo (North-West) was the Vice President, David Mark (North-Central) was the Senate President. There was no south-westerner in the top five offices in the country. It was one of what Buhari used in campaigning against Jonathan in 2015, that the South-West was not regarded in the scheme of things.

“Also, the South-West has the second-highest number of registered voters, so we should be able to do something for that region in order to get their support.

“They are also looking at the Osinbajo factor as well. Osinbajo comes across as a technocrat, somebody who is intelligent, very smart — and he is from South-West.

So if we are trying to get the votes of South-West in 2019, the question they will ask is: ‘What do you have for us, because APC is giving us the VP.’

“To you and me, it doesn’t make sense — because we know that, to a large extent, where you come from does not really have a direct impact on the people’s yearnings.

Having Osinbajo in government was a factor for Tinubu; when the cabal was moving against him, trying to short-change him, Osinbajo was the one standing for him in the presidency.

So, to a large extent, the party hierarchy feel that if they have someone like that occupying the number-two position, they will be able to push the South-West agenda from the presidency; and they have someone they can hold responsible if Atiku does not deliver his restructuring programme.

So, that’s the argument from the South-West over the past 24 hours, and the decision-makers are already considering it.”

Then that negates everything, what is worth doing is worth doing fine, no more no less.

Everybody is tired of Buhari, pick your VP from SE and you have 99% SE & SS and 50% SW with you, get 50% North and you are good to go
SW should go for SP, they can push their agenda from there.

Everywhere pdp go, e go backfire, grin grin grin grin grin
Go to South west, south east vote massively for ApC (which they will still lose the south west)
Again if they go to South East, south west go vex destroy them....
I no pity Atiku at all

Picking a vice from the east will make it too easy for Buhari. He should get a vice from the SW so that the election will be a little more competitive and entertaining but either way, one thing is certain... just like the way fayoshe was humbled and silenced, atiku and his Atiretarded and aticoagulated minions will be disgraced in 2019

Yes, most Igbos will never dream of voting for Buhari even with a gun to their forehead, but there are other parties and also an option of boycotting the elections if PDP betrays us and that would be a disaster for Atiku and PDP.
For 16 years of PDP rule, none of the top 2 positions went to the SE despite the unflinching support from the region, now some people are still suggesting rubbish.
I don't know why Yorubas want to reap where they did not sow

He is aware of the jinxed ones. Their support and patronage would surely make him loose.

He stands a better chance of getting up to 12% of votes if he chooses from the west, with an Eastern VP he would barely scrape 5% as due.

Anyways ATIKU is a loser.

South west has no capacity to do anything to PDP. They have never voted for PDP before and will never, the 50% and above votes they always get there is from non Yorubas and relatives of those who are contesting under PDP

Igbos have been making all the sacrifices for PDP all this while and taking the attacks and insults. The VP position must come to SE or else we destroy everything. I personally would campaign against Atiku let everything burn down. We are not fools.

Okay what will you gain if you don't support Atiku and he loses to Buhari with Osinbajo as running mate

You don't need to argue with them, they thought that all of us voted for Jonathan, not everybody voted because we thought Buhari was coming as a changed man. Even fr mbaka preaching against Jonathan discouraged a lot but now we know better. Buhari does not deserve a second chance because has nothing to offer.
He is not even the one in charge of his government hence he does not know which minister is working or not working.

VP from South East is the only right option here. A VP from South West will result in Igbos boycotting the election and Yorubas will still not give him block votes. So what will Atiku or PDP gain?

You are not making sense. You wish to trade VP for Presidency under PMB.

Do you think Athiefku would allow his VP to outshine him or work seamlessly with him the way PMB and Osinbajo are doing?

Ogbeni as it stands the SE will not get a shot at Presidency for another 16years unless they align with PMB then they get it in 4 years.

Enjoy your Athiefkulation. grin
