He is right to some extent. The folks who invested in the power sector are not serious people, all they just want is profit even when they are not investing enough. Almost all the power system infrastructures are still the old ones they bought from FG. How many new injection substations have the discos built? How many distribution transformers have they bought? How many prepaid meters have they deployed to customers? How many equipment do they have for fault identification and fault rectification? What's in the store of these discos? ECN/NEPA/PHCN had so many things working for them but for poor management, all of those equipment and infrastructures were sold to people who are not "rich" enough to sustain the industry. He is right to some extent. #IMO 1 Like |

Fashola is being clever by half, if he truly said this. The government is still the biggest player in the power sector therefore it can be blamed for the inefficiencies and poor performance. Government owns 10 power generation plants via NDPHC. In addition it has 100% control in the transmission segment and has about 40% stake in all the distribution companies. Government owns the only bulk electricity trader and off course is in absolute control over NERC, the sector regulator. These kinds of statements, if truly made by the minister, portrays him in bad light as it reveals a shallow understanding of the sector. 12 Likes 1 Share |

Fashola is confused. If there was a tremendous improvement in power, he will be the first person to say that APC government did it. Now that it is the other way, he is totally confused and short of words to defend himself and their incompetent administration. 2 Likes |

MetaPhysical: No.The Power Ministry is not the regulator. NERC is the regulator. The Power Ministry remains in charge of policy and strategy. But its roll in the nuts and bolts has (should be) heavily diminished. |

PS712:seriously,fashola talks carelessly these days,he doesn't think through things before talking. In his haste to absolve himself and his ministry,he forgot that government still controls transmission whose infrastructure is very dilapidated leading to a differntial between the power generated and that which is eventually distributed,of course he's won't to quote the former which is higher to give a false sense of progress in the sector in this dispensation compared with the previous. Besides,if the gencos aren't performing to expectations, then what stops their licenses from being revoked by this administration, after all, their contracts are time bound? 3 Likes |

hush15: You people are just throwing blames up and down. Do you even know how many Nigerians are short-changing the distribution companies by using illegal connections and enjoying electricity without paying a dime. And the sad thing is that even some universities and big industries too would be owing electricity bills running into billions of naira. That is why I tell people that Nigeria's problem is not just a problem of leadership. Change must come from everyone. Fashola has made efforts, aggressive and passive, to deal with exploitations. Perhaps you are not current. But it is an open secret that the businessmen running the DISCOs don't like Fashola. 2 Likes |

Reference: Power is business but the government is still the biggest impediment to the growth of electricity sector. Owing to a penchant for control, the government through NERC, fixes electricity prices and most times the tariffs are sub-economic and far lower that the costs. Same way they try to overly control petrol prices, a situation that has led to gross inefficiencies, reduced productivity and increased corruption. The regulator should focus on providing an enabling environment for business to thrive rather than fixing prices of goods and services. As an aside, why did the government retain some stake in the distribution companies when they can't use their substantial shareholding to drive positive change in these establishments? 4 Likes 1 Share |

The sellers are also the buyers, I hate the bastard that started this private thing, before the advent of private, all public firms were working, now all we see is private school, private hospital, private refinery, private estate, private beach, private jets, private universities, and all others except private parts... May God punish all our bastardy leaders that used our money to pay themselves to own our public properties... Your generation will suffer by God's Grace.. Bastards |

CrystalMax: They are just keeping afloat. They are not making much. You will know any sector that has 'free' money, business sharks will be swimming around to takeover and devour. Remember the subsidy regime, overnight every one money bag had a tank farm constructed. Banks were falling over themselves to finance. Today no money is going into power because nothing is coming out. Returns are poor and venture capitalists such as Geometric that was heavily leveraged by banks.... well you know what is happening with Diamond. And please, no matter how 'rich' some entity is if a venture does not make business sense, it does not, simple. Big money is not symptomatic of financial carelessness. I have done a feasibility with some of my friends to do independent generation and it does not work, simple, the tariffs are too low. This was the mistake made during the privatisation regime. They bought into the process with a promise rates will be incrementally raised to meet up with set targets. Fashola has tried, the rates have been raised but not quickly enough and not high enough to ignite investor interest. Believe me if it is attractive you will have heard a lot of M&A's since the privatisation, even political interference. The power sector is tough. 3 Likes |

He is only partially right By owing the DISCO's N300B for power which constitutes the bulk of debts owed them, the FG lacks the freedom of speech to condemn them. The distribution company complain of dearth funds due to debt. If they were liquid, they could buid capacity Also, there's lots of ineffective demand for power due to the parlous state of the economy, creating lots of unused capacity. The bad state of the economy lies at Buhari's door. Also, transmission if I'm correct still remains in the hand of the government and it has been earnt that it needs to build capacity to move al the electricity presently in the system. Presently, it is incapable to 2 Likes 2 Shares |

I do not agree with Fashola in some respect. The people have placed their trust in government. Government has the final say. If the regulator is not working, sack them and put the right people there. The regulator must work to make sure that the private Shylock retarding our progress in electricity are dealt with using the law. No investors will hear that the private thieves are not delivering and still blame government for getting things right. |
