Throwing out a red herring simply means you are using diversionary tactics. a red herring is a fact that has been provided to you that is unnecessary and irrelevant. It has no purpose in being in the fact pattern other than to distract the reader.
It usually means a false clue or deliberate attempt to throw you off the scent or divert your attention away from what your looking for.

sigh! how many times am i to repeat myself? The vessel the cargo was meant to be on sailed but the shipper never notified shopclue on time that the car never shipped with that vessel and would be on another vessel. I was tracking the original vessel the car was meant to be on because shopclue never knew it wasnt on it. And as she said, she only just found out.
