Hmmmm....

I had a surgery sometime in 2015 in a federal hospital at Abuja, on the surgical bed the doctor meant to fix the drip on my hand kept puncturing my hands and he did so in a very mean manner. A colleague of his asked him to calm down and he started ranting about how someone brushed his car and pulled out the bumper. After that, I needed to go for post surgery treatment. On that particular day I was having this severe headache that ran through my spine and couldn't sit for long as a result Anastasia administered on me. I pleaded with this same premature doctor to allow me see the consultant as I was in sefia pains. This dude was so rude and asked me if I'm the first person to be in pains. I just told him that ''guy even as I am in pains, if I hear Pim from your mouth again, I'll gather my last strength and beat you up'' the guy just waka jejely as me ma don mean am since the day I had the surgery when he used my hands for acupuncture practice. Eventually I saw the chief consultant who told me to drink more water to wash down the effect of the Anastasia and spend more time lying down as against sitting up for the mean time. He also scolded him for not knowing what to do to relieve my pains. I just thank God he wasn't the chief consultant.... I for no see my breakthrough in life.

So, your grievance is that the poor doctor is trying to insert a cannula for you so he can give you some fluids intravenously, then you report him to the consultant who reiterated that you needed fluids -- which the doctor was doing already. Can you not see there's no sense in your post, and yet numerous people have liked it because they're biased against doctors.

My friend, doctors can't transfer fluids from the drip to your veins magically. They need to put a cannula first, and often, this may have to be tried multiple times before one is successfully inserted. If you're in pain, ask "I'm hurting all over, I don't think I can take one more attempt", "is there someone else who could try?" But if you come with your attitude, then that's a problem. Knowing Nigerians, you would criticise the doctor in your husky voice, and order him to bring the chief consultant and you expect a hug and a kiss.

Another terrible doctor spotted. Did you pass comprehension in school? Please read again and know what the doctor's fault was. I'm sure you hardly listen to your patients before administering prescriptions.

Backed by the way you insulted another profession, it obvious you just want to play healthcare politics. I am not left in the dark regarding who pathologist is. However, I won't explain who I am just tell you that I have thorough know of who a pathologist is. I won't make any argument or educate you more because you sound inexperienced. For you to still be asking this question shows you've not learnt anything about Nigerians.

Your question is just like asking why the Devil is wicked. Are you a learner?

The average Nigerian hates the prosperity of another and doesn't believe he can make it without pulling down someone else.

Is that the kinda person you want to reform? Keep wasting your time oh, the only way Nigerians can learn is through suffering, that's why they respect anyone with a rifle than with words of wisdom...

So what should the Pathologist do?

Funny enough, there was nothing like Med Lab Scientist before oh, those were the days quality results were being churned out, but to cut costs nowadays, na so dem bring these guys, now na different result you go dey everywhere.

Guys wey no even sabi do blood film sef, guys wey go dey diagnose Typhoid with that irresponsible test called Widal. Na them pollute the average

The lab scientist is supposed to work under the pathology department of the hospital. This was a method of outsourcing for cost since pathologists are expensive

Im not really sure what happened that people just open labs anyhow

What are you saying bros?

The same typhoid people have been treating every 3 months for the past 10 years?! grin

Resistant typhoid!

I asked 2 people, from Mali and Senegal once, if they knew what typhoid is-- they had no freaking idea.

But in Nigeria, everybody has typhoid until Widal test proves otherwise-- grin

I have seen typhoid a few times and it is scary as hell!

No be una med lab scientist dey confuse dem? You see a patient telling you categorically she has typhoid, without even ordinary fever, I'll tell them if she can open her mouth to tell me she has Typhoid, it means she doesn't have it; she no go gree oh, until I waste her money doing Widal and giving antibiotics, thereby helping to make worse the plague of antibiotic resistance.

Meanwhile Widal is NOT the diagnostic test for Typhoid. Syphilis, Malaria etc can all cause an elevated Widal titre. It is only serial Widal tests that even "speculate", not "diagnose" Typhoid.

The confirmatory tests to do for Typhoid include Culture of the following samples:

1. Blood: within 1week of the illness.
2. Stool: within 2weeks of the illness.
3. Urine: within 3weeks of the illness.

OR doing a Bone Marrow biopsy with a Trephine needle which is quite painful and complicated, requiring an Haematologist and Microbiologist to do most times.

But you'll see people bringing a single Widal test result and saying they have Typhoid.

Most times we diagnose Typhoid clinically(from the history taking) because of the stress one has to go through in making a diagnosis as explained above.

Any fever that worsens at night and resolves in the day time is Malaria or any other illness until proven otherwise, definitely not typhoid.

Any patient that's not bedridden even if they have fever is not Typhoid, could be anynother illness; but definitely NOT Typhoid.

And Widal is not the diagnostic test for Typhoid, we only manage it if resource constrained settings, and one must uave serial tests, atleast 2 done to compare the rate of elevated titres in the space of 24hrs. An elevation above ×2 of the previous titre is "speculative" NOT diagnostic of Typhoid. The tests i wrote above are the diagnostic measures in defining Typhoid.

I know all I'm saying will enter one ear & leave the other of Nigerians, but you won't say ya'll weren't told.

You just spoke my mind. I have been having stomach problems for the past 15 years now. None of them seems to know what's wrong with me... They keep treating typhoid fever because test results shows typhoid. Some of them are even saying is psychological. I met one long time ago and he gave up on me.

I just wanna travel out for a better treatment. I will save up for that.

He is right.

Pass USLME exams. Then if lucky, get Residency placement of minimum 3 years. Then one can do fellowship (for specialists).

To practice in US as a doctor trained in Nigeria will take about 6 years for very intelligent and "lucky" ones.
\

That is because in the US system, after graduation, one would get into residency so doctors coming from Nigeria get into residency too. Similar duration of residency as is obtainable in Nigeria.
The UK with a much more efficient and better health index than the US run a different system and doctors from Nigeria can practice there without getting into residency

Lol why? The stool sampling and blood films and all that are an aspect of pathology. Most of that stuff is supposed to be done by a computer nowadays anyway

If the hospital has a functioning biomedical science department that would be different

My mother inlaw wasn't feeling well, she went to a general hospital and saw a doctor who wrote her some medication. She wasn't satisfied so she went to a private laboratory opposite the hospital. She tested herself for malaria and typhoid with malaria returning very high. The lab recommended additional antimalarial to her drugs but she opted to revisit the Dr to properly prescribe drugs for her.

The Dr sent her out of his office without looking at the result saying he gave her the right prescription for what she complained.

Lol. The lab should have prescribed the additional antimalarial they recommended.
I'm still wondering why someone would have to take two different antimalarials together

A Nigerian doctor killed my brother a few months ago.

My brother complained that he had abdominal pain, a doctor promptly booked him for an appendix operation without scan or any form of clinical evidence to support his assumption.

He conducted the surgery despite confirming himself that the patient BP was extremely high and it would be unethical to operate on such person.

My late brother lost a lot of blood during and after the surgery.

Later on, a series of complications arose. The stomach was swollen, he was extremely thirsty which led to the discovery that his blood sugar level was also very high and eventually he started complaining that he couldn't breathe well.

In all these the doctor was so harsh to the patient and the caregiver. He kept him when he could have referred him. My brother gasped and struggled to hold on to HIS life.

Eventually he referred him but the man never made it to the place he was referred to.

Nigerian doctors and health workers are like demigods, so heartless, so callous, so cold.

I don't forgive easily.

All these happens because we don't know anything called medical malpractice in Nigeria. If you sue that Doctor, he is bound to loose his license and also pay through his nose for it.

Most of them are just demons. I remember when my mum was sick in 2003. We took her to a private hospital and all the man could do was administer drips for more than 24 hours. The next night, one of our family members who works the O.A.U.T.H.C advised us to take her there if we want her alive. Omo that man was just God sent. We would have lost my mum if we didn't adhere. Better health care no dey naija.. That's why the leaders run to first world countries to treat ordinary headache.

The Dr in his prescription didn't include antimalarial. She we back to him with only the test result so he can prescribe an antimalarial for her against the one the lab recommended but the doc won't even look at her test result.

The patient should be free to ask questions about their health. The hospital is providing them with a service and its their right to make enquiries about it.

Doctors and nurses shouldnt shut people down when they have legitimate concerns in the name of "stop teaching me my job", its wrong.

I heard someone fell into a well, upon the person's rescue and taken to the same hospital the doctor was busy administering drips!

But stuff really happened!! My friend was the one taking care of the girl's mother at the hospital through the ordeal.
She called me crying one moment, and celebrated the next. The girl in question is with her big bro now in the states.

The hospital didn't have those pulse checking equipment like you see in Hollywood movies!! So everything was based on the doctor's personal check. One medical person I put it to, said it happens sometimes.

I am not going to give the name of the hospital in Kubwa Abuja, though I took a personal note of making sure people close to me flee from it.

My dear, your post is very ignorant if I'm honest.

It can convince other ignorant nigerians who are too reluctant to ask pertinent questions, but not any one with a rational mind.

Theres nothing like a pulse checking machine to confirm death. Death is the absence of life and human beings have been good at that for decades. Now you tell me someone had no signs of life for three days and received one American wonder drug and popped right back to life.

Seriously?

you don't get it. Will you jump up and go to park or airport and enter vehicle or plane without paying. At least one has to keep funds for emergency services. If you can pay for card services and one or 2 things, any hospital will run extra investigations to even if you don't have more funds just to make sure you or your ward is ok.
