Maybe NUC actually goofed by allowing them lecture and become Professors without PhD in the past but it seems they realized their error.

The consultants want to continue becoming Professors without PhD. I laugh! Do they actually know the rigors of becoming a PhD holder?
They are not bigger than NUC that regulates them so if NUC says they cant become Professors without PhD then they should either join their colleagues who go on to acquire PhD or get out.
it's also not easy to become a consultant, they spend six good years.

U don't get it. PhD is mandatory for those lecturing preclinical courses like Physiology and all doctors know that.
What NUC is now saying is that consultants must poccess PhD before they can lecture clinical students in courses like surgery, Paediatrics etc.
They are saying that a surgeon, a fellow of national and/or West African postgraduate college who has spent close to a decade to specialise in surgery needs to go get PhD to lecture surgery.
That sounds very stupid. There is no one more qualified to lecture medical students than a fellow.

So their ordinary residency = Msc +PhD?

Doctors in Nigeria are mad. No wonder they don't know anything.

I support them when they are fighting for salary increase, but not for this.

Why earn salary without the required training?

I tire o....My brother.

One of them have been ranting all over this thread.

Nobody is downgrading residency, but is it a PhD?

If its not who cares, its the policy.

NUC just wants to cause unnecessary discord.
The rigor involved in getting fellowship with the paper work and research is more demanding than getting a PhD. A 5 to 6 years residency program that some spend a decade to finish.

You're very ignorant is what I'd say. I don't even know how to reply you because what you're saying makes no sense. When a doctor undergoes residency in a particular field, he is already specializing in that field. The residency program is similar to a PhD program except that it's more hands on.
A medical doctor lecturer in orthopaedics should have extensive work in that field and need a PhD .
A lecture in community health should have a doctorate in public health or epidemiology.
And so on.

Residency is too general to give you that specialised training and knowledge regardless of how long it takes.

And without that training, you should not teach.
Go and work in the hospital.

There is no way a medical doctor teaching community health knows better than a scientist with a doctorate in epidemiology on how disease is spread.

Do you also know the rigors involved in becoming a fellow of of either the national postgraduate medical college of Nigeria or that of West Africa. Taking over 5 to 8 years to complete. Infact a fresh university medically trained doctor should be doing his PhD directly
Re: Doctors To Embark On Nationwide Strike Over NUC’s PhD Directive by Nobody: 12:20pm On Feb 17, 2020
Phd in what again? An average consultant has spent more time in school and working on published research than a Phd.

Who comes up with this stuff anyway? Some fat WAEC holder pushing pens behind a desk?

What a bunch of illiterate medical doctors saying "PhD is cosmetics"

All over the world, a PhD or equivalent is required as a minimum qualification to join academic positions at lecturer level and above at any University.

A PhD exposes one to a narrower field but at greater depth and understanding.

Most medical doctors that are teaching our medical students are just holders of MBBS which is a Bachelors degree equivalent to having BTech or BSc in Engineering. However, with residency periods, we can subjectively agree/disagree its equivalent (but not) to Masters.

Irrespective of the aforementioned, to be a lecturer in a proper University you need to have a PhD, there is no shortcut about it.

We @ know what Doctors go through first hand,
PhD certificate though relevant but “ it doesn’t add value to any kind of treatment”.
The NUC’s decision is punitive and acting in error,
We believe that having fellowship acquired through residency was more vigorous,
which could be equated with PhD certificate,
That is residency training is purposeful,
while PhD is cosmetics'.
Only Medical Doctors in the house can comprehend our posts.

How would you know what they go through...

Do you grill cadaver for them

I am a chemical engineer.

From 400 level -500 level, only lecturers with doctorate took us in school.
300 level is for lecturers with atleast a masters.
That is the policy.

How much more in medicine that deals with human life and need highly experienced teachers.

Give us another analogy for O&G, Orthopaedics or Paediatrics. What specific courses do lecturers in those fields have to get a 2.5 year Phd in, to 'know better' than a consultant with a 6 year residency please?

A Phd takes 2 years max if one is committed. Residency is a 5-6 year journey with publications and exhaustive work experience. How does a Phd holder qualify to he a better teacher than a consultant please?

Well, it can be streamlined.

Pure medical courses like Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Dentistry, opthamology, should be based on medical experience.
Which means consultant doctors should have the required professional experience to impact knowledge.

But applied scientific courses like community health, pathology and pharmacology, medical biochemistry e.t.c should be taught by specialists.
And those people should have a PhD.

Take it easy na. Lol.
I think most people will support doctors on this one.

By the way, I think Canada does that because you have to have a first degree in one of the clinical sciences before you can go for an MBBS. That is not the case in Nigeria.

The operative qualification is HIGHLY EXPERIENCED TRAINERS. And it's the Responsibilities of the University Authorities to maintain the operating Standards and Status.
