Maybe NUC actually goofed by allowing them lecture and become Professors without PhD in the past but it seems they realized their error.

The consultants want to continue becoming Professors without PhD. I laugh! Do they actually know the rigors of becoming a PhD holder?
They are not bigger than NUC that regulates them so if NUC says they cant become Professors without PhD then they should either join their colleagues who go on to acquire PhD or get out.

oga keep quiet

do you know the rigours of doing residency and fellowship??

what's there in phD

True, you see ordinary Mbbs holder lecturing physiology, anatomy etc. It's not a bad idea if they are forced to obtain a PhD in these fields before embarking on lecturing

You can't be a professor without a PhD. Professor Ozoilo definitely has a PhD. However, some members don't. Graduate assistants don't have PhDs for instance. Insisting no one can lecture without a PhD was over reaching by the NUC.

see this mumu... do you know what it takes to get a basic medical/Dental degree not to talk of becoming a Consultant?? The courses i did in final year medical school alone was 96 credit units. Thats more than 2 Masters degrees in only final year

That's very good, brilliant.

But is it a Masters?

Let's be objective here, and call a Spade a Spade.

This is not about equivalence.

What is the problem of these doctors sef? They always strike over everything. This is so irresponsible of these doctors.

Beside, what is wrong with having only those with PhD qualification teach in Universities?

Government should invoke the No Work No Pay Rule for any striking Doctor
i thought you are knowleageable. can you please tell us any developed country that makes Phd prerequisite for clinical lecturers after medical fellowship?

You have a point about PhD increasing your level of understanding.
But you must be really dumb if you think the residency programme that makes one a consultant does not qualify one to be a lecturer, then you are gravely mistaken.
Google doctor's residency programmes that makes one a consultant. When you're done, go appreciate your family doctor or a consultant.
Many of them are actually greedy and that's the major problem. You see them clinging to teaching hospitals because they want to be earning salaries on two scales. They earn salaries as a lecturer and also earn as a doctor in the teaching hospital. That's another aspect the NUC has to look into.

What a bunch of illiterate medical doctors saying "PhD is cosmetics"

All over the world, a PhD or equivalent is required as a minimum qualification to join academic positions at lecturer level and above at any University.

A PhD exposes one to a narrower field but at greater depth and understanding.

Most medical doctors that are teaching our medical students are just holders of MBBS which is a Bachelors degree equivalent to having BTech or BSc in Engineering. However, with residency periods, we can subjectively agree/disagree its equivalent (but not) to Masters.

Irrespective of the aforementioned, to be a lecturer in a proper University you need to have a PhD, there is no shortcut about it.
So you mean after all the years that a doctor would spend in school.. spend doing his residency before becoming a consultant... you still want him to spend more years chasing a phD degree that can be bought .

Congrats. However, that doesn't make you a masters degree holder.

You went through that to become a doctor and nothing else. You want additional accolades? Earn it. #nodisrespect

I think the main problem is doctors feel they are supreme and better than other professionals. As important as their job is, the decision to become medical practitioners was independently made by them and not forced to become one.

It doesn't still make sense when an MBBS holder is lecturing physiology and anatomy. Some even become HODs . The PhD is necessary if you ask me.
U don't get it. PhD is mandatory for those lecturing preclinical courses like Physiology and all doctors know that.
What NUC is now saying is that consultants must poccess PhD before they can lecture clinical students in courses like surgery, Paediatrics etc.
They are saying that a surgeon, a fellow of national and/or West African postgraduate college who has spent close to a decade to specialise in surgery needs to go get PhD to lecture surgery.

My dear, it is what it is, that's the policy.

This is not about years, or equivalence, its the requirement and POLICY.

If they don't want to have a PhD then they can simply practice medicine and not lecture.

Truth is, only a practicing doctor can impact good knowledge.
It's not a Nigerian thing, it is what it is.
Mind you they are actually doing two jobs.
If your lecturer isn't a practicing doctor, I doubt he would impact enough knowledge in you.
They always bring up clinical scenarios they've encountered and it helps.

In medicine, PhD is cosmetic.

Please NUC, agree to their terms.

You'll never really know how important they are until you have an emergency.
Abeg. It's not all of us that can afford to travel abroad for medical reasons
It wouldn't be fair to other lecturers with PhD
Re: Doctors To Embark On Nationwide Strike Over NUC’s PhD Directive by ybn(m): 11:58am On Feb 17, 2020
Having PhD as teaching qualification is the best practice worldwide in all fields of training. Medical doctors in Nigeria should spare this nation the unnecessary noise about residency training as if it is only in Nigeria that medical doctors undertake residency.

You are smart, you asked a question.
Listen, in other fields, PhD shows how far you've gone in that field. An equivalent of speciality.
But in medicine, in other to be a specialist, there are different programmes like residency that makes one a consultant ie a specialist.

Yes PhD is undoubtedly a huge feat and every consultant wants that.
But you can never say that a consultant is not qualified to lecture in a university without a PhD.
This is the best I can simplify it for you.

As in PhD in their area of specialisation before lecturing in University.
You're very ignorant is what I'd say. I don't even know how to reply you because what you're saying makes no sense. When a doctor undergoes residency in a particular field, he is already specializing in that field. The residency program is similar to a PhD program except that it's more hands on.
Re: Doctors To Embark On Nationwide Strike Over NUC’s PhD Directive by CSTR2: 12:06pm On Feb 17, 2020
So their ordinary residency = Msc +PhD?

Doctors in Nigeria are mad. No wonder they don't know anything.

I support them when they are fighting for salary increase, but not for this.

Why earn salary without the required training?
