DesignPoint: No one said they shouldn’t practice medicine... the NUC is only regulrizing their policy on lecturing qualification....why should doctors have an exception and be allowed to lecture with only their first degree.. 4 Likes |

CSTR2:You are making assumptions from an ignorant perspective You are ignorant of how medical education works. Medicine is essentially an APPRENTICESHIP. and existed for years outside the university environment mainly in clinical settings. Many doctors essentially are technicians Let me use Federal teaching Hospitals to illustrate. Teaching Hospitals are under the Ministry of Healt which pays the Consultants. The affiliated medical school is a university entity. In clinical sciences there usually would be an Academic surgery departments headed by a PhD and other Lecturers who would be Phds that carry out lecturing and academic supervision of postgrads. The surgery department of the teaching Hospital often is distinct from that of the medical school. It is very important to remember this especially as in some cases they use the same accomodation etc Teaching Hospital departments are focused on treatment delivery and sometimes making money The medical school is about teaching. It has no capacity to provide practical clinical teaching and relies on Consultants and middle grade doctors from the teaching Hospital to provide practical training. Often Academics from the medical school work in the Teaching Hospital and they may have a formal Consulant contract as well as a lecturer/professor contract This may be as Honorary (unpaid) Consultants or substantive The same is true for Teaching Hospital consultants who may get Honorary Lecturers positions Generally speaking Teaching Hospitals have plenty of Consultants compared to medical schools and it is these Honorary Lecturers who keep medical school going OFTEN unpaid for Lecturer activities Practically apart from Lectures Apprenticeship training takes place in hospitals under Consultants who may have no relationship with the medical school If you are training in Orthopaedics you want to spend time at Igbobi For Psychiatry there is Yaba or Aro These placements are under Consultants supervision not Phds that is the nature of medical training. Practical course learnt by apprenticeship 6 Likes |

funmisticqueen2: U don’t sound very intelligent....rigorousity isn’t the criteria of a PhD....there are so many rigorous things in life.... don’t equate what has different requirement together......5years or even 100years residency might be rigorous than a PhD as u claim...but do not equate the two...they ain’t equivalent .... ...a PhD has a requirement of carrying out a laboratory or field independent novel research with nothing less than a total of 20,000 word thesis of ur findings at the end of 4yrs......unless a doctor does this in their residency they should stop this nonsense 7 Likes |

CSTR2: We were taught anatomy by anatomy graduate while in medical school.... I felt they were more interested in forcing us learn so much anatomy rather than impacting the relevant clinical anatomy we really need... It was like they wanted us to become anatomist which on the long run wasn't useful.... I feel medical doctors should train n teach medical students.... Clinical knowledge should be impacted as early as possible in medical training- right from basic medical.... Only a medical doctor can achieve this..... I agree doctors in basic medical science should get necessary academic qualification needed to teach in the universities..... Exception could be consultants pathologists who already have a professional qualification.... PhD is very useless in clinical science especially for nigeria where funding for clinical research is poor.... So what exactly will they use the PhD for.... I think we should be pragmatic here n not just make abstract decisions based on envy n prejudice.... Fellowship in nigeria is thorough n deep and that's exactly what our medical schools need to ensure continuity of knowledge... 3 Likes |

yinchar:Your assertions are untrue and misleading Medicine is not a purely academic exercise It is learnt by apprenticeship That is how it has ALWAYS been MOST clinicians involved in medical student training are NOT employed by the medical school in Nigeria and that is exactly how it is in the UK. Medicine has tended to use the facility of Honorary Lecturer as a way of engaging specialists in medical education Doctors generally do not pursue Phds rather they pursue specialization and that is also an apprenticeship model undertaking as long or longer than MBBS. Phds in Medicine are more relevant to research than clinical work. If you leave medical school and pursue a Phd immediately you cannot work as a specialist because you are not considered to be one. A specialist qualification is more relevant in clinical work 1 Like |

obi4eze: Ignorance is a disease, and that's what you just displayed here. Not even in US Ivy league institutions are general discipline certifications ever equated with the noble, hierarchically progressive medical education. The years of training for a typical medical specialty or fellowship are even more than that of common discipline doctorate. If this RUBBISH is allowed, even a medical student can easily bag a PhD while still an undergrad... Reason: 1. Most PhDs today can be bagged online and 2. Medical students are pragmatically smarter than other category of students. NUC or Anybody wonders why medical school grades are left at just Pass/Fail and not the elementary A, B, C, D & F obtained in other purely academic disciplines? 1 Like |

The problem with Nigeria is everyone trying to make an argument without first gaining insight into a particular situation. 1. One part argue the requirement is PHD to lecture. A medical student in surgery class will be taught surgery by only the surgeon who has Phd. Question is who will supervise the coursework of a surgeon in the PHD program? 2. Theorists counter experience and insist we stick to laws. Is a fresh MIT PHD graduate in aerospace engineering employed to teach an astronaut flying? 3. Nigerians and the quest for certification. We own for certificates than other countries combined, and yet offer no tangible value for all that certification. Companies run away from open employment because of the cost of retraining our CERTIFIED graduates. 4. Whether or not NUC wins or not, doctors will be threatened and will continue living in droves. No incentives, no protection, no appreciation. Brexit happened because of NHS, you dumbwits, and someone here who hasn't been to LUTH or Igbobi says they should go. A country of 200million certified fools, ruled by an uncertified president whose WAEC is in doubt, all proposing more certification and less practicality. Vote Sowore next time, we need to legalise weed. Maybe y'all can see better 2 Likes |

There is no need to strike on this issue If they can find enough Phds good luck to them How many doctors in Nigeria have a Phd? Doctors do not have to teach biochemistry but who will teach surgery? How many universities in Nigeria can support and supervise a Phd |
