More like he recognized Nigeria. He first identified his Nigerian roots to the British press n has never stopped to do same since his rise to stardom.
Carlton Cole was a Nigerian born n raised in Britian but don't ever talk about Nigeria to him through out his football career. Are you aware that Ross Barkely's real name is Ross Effanga? Yes...he is Nigerian. But he has covered it well by using his mother's surname Barkely.
Nigeria is there for anyone born outside of it's shores. If you want to identify with it fine... If not...na u sabi

Some people who have suffered enough in this country wouldn't mind staying away from Nigeria for a lifetime..

You are just yaning opata like this because you even had the privilege to travel out in the first place.

I'm sure your view would be different if there wasn't any possibility of you ever traveling out of Nigeria
thats the point he is trying to make and one day if you are lucky to travel out of the country you will understand the feeling.

I totally agree with the OP and those that agree with the OP too.

I'm in my mid 40s, and I've lived roughly half of my time in Nigeria and the other half between various countries; regardless of our sorry situation -- there's no place like home!

Even the exiled Nnamdi Kanu that spews garbage about Nigeria daily, does it out of love for his fatherland and desire to see things change for the better.

Exactly my point. I’ve been in the United States for a while now and there is no day I don’t miss Nigeria. There is that special feeling that comes with knowing that your real home is Nigeria. I know of Nigerian - American students here(who were born here by Nigerians but have never been to Nigeria before) that have Nigerian flags in their rooms. Most of them read all the negative news about Nigeria but they still know that their only true home is Nigeria. Some of them will be graduating from college in a few weeks and they will all have Nigerian flags on their shoulders on their graduation day. Some Nigerian - Americans even dance better to Nigerian music than Nigerians in Nigeria itself.

There are many of these Nigerian - American students who apply to intern in Nigeria for free. Some of them will go to Nigerian - intern for a few months and return back to the United States - with stronger love for their roots and country despite all the negativities they witnessed. I never knew how powerful roots and ancestors are until after I left Nigeria for the U.S

I know this feeling... It's a crazy feeling because the minute you land Nigeria, then you start to miss where you coming from again. It's a feeling of insatisfaction I guess it's not about Nigeria being home.

I personally cannot leave outside Nigeria more than 6months at a stretch, I also cannot leave in Nigeria more than 3months at a stretch. This has being my life since I first shored outside Nigeria for the first time in 2017.

... It's a back and forth feeling. I just haven't being able to diagnose it yet, what meaning to give to it

Joshua schooled in Mayflower shagamu, Nigeria is what makes him thick .. in a competitive sport like boxing, you need confidence and the best way to boost your confidence is to go to your root, visit where you grew up, see thing that helped shape you

to me any time I feel abit down I just drive around my child hood neighborhood , I visit my primary school, secondary school and other places that seem so big and scary to me back then and I see how tiny it had shrunk or how old I have become.. this to me is the best therapy a man can ever have.. it works 99% of the time

many Nigerians calling Nigeria shithole do so because they are poor and disadvantaged , if you can gurantee your own comfort (inverter/solar , good estate, little change in the account and good ride) you would understand Nigeria is a very very lovely place to enjoy your life,

.
You made sense until that last paragraph... In a sane country that isn't a ZOO are you supposed to provide light for yourself? Even your solar cannot guarantee you 100% light without NEPA assistance.

Dude Nigeria is a zoo.... Periodt, don't allow few comments of faked positivity to blind sight you, we all need to join hands and fix this country. Nobody needs to sweat blood to be comfortable.

There is no place like home.

And we have some people here calling their country a zoo (cos a hunch back porn.star told them so),
Well, only animals live in zoos by the way.
We ain't surprised.

Very well said.
Exactly our point above.
It is always good and refreshing to know that we still have reasonable and sensible youths like you on this forum.
Stay blessed sir.

Anthony Oluwafemi Joshua,
A great guy full of #RESPECT.
That is One good and outstanding thing about the Yoruba tribe.

I have always admire the way you school people on this forum, you are always condemning people about calling Nigeria shit hole and all sorts of negative names and you are also one of those few persons on this forum that is somehow transparent in all your comments. You are also a staunch supporter of good governance(APC) which is why you are always critical in all your analysis.
You also preach about one family, unity and togetherness thereby not creating vaccum for suspiciousness in your write-ups(Comments).
You tell people the way it is suppose to be done even kids that do not even know the generational history of this great country called nigeria, I know of a person like you will not tolerate backlash on our darling president in the name of MOHAMMADU BUHARI. I do not see you as a tribalistic person, Please what is the meaning of this "Kiddo, Don't mind him jor,
atleast we are happy for him that he is not one of those that wakes up their people with karate kicks or boxing blows every morning.
Don't mind the boy jor! wink

I guess you don’t even know my background. I spent the first 21years of my life in Nigeria( and my current age is below 25). My Uncle could not get a job many years after graduation. We’ve been homeless in the past. One of my uncles lost his investments to govt recklessness. My family and I have lived in slums and villages(I’ve experienced Nigeria at its worst) but Nigeria is forever our home and we will forever love it.

We love Nigeria not because of its political leaders or its difficult environment but because of its people, the Naija spirit and culture. When I was in Nigeria, I also had this mentality that if I get the opportunity to travel out of the country, I will never look back again. I was wrong! A few months after I left, I began to miss the country - so much so that I had to return to spend some time home. Nigeria has its enormous challenges but even America and other Western countries are not perfect as well.

Living abroad will make you understand that Nigeria should be better than many of these Western countries if it properly harnesses its human capital and natural resources.

If SARS had harassed you and labeled you a Yahoo boy after you came back, you would have run back abroad and will.nevwr want to come here.again.
Re: The Reasons Why Anthony Oluwafemi Joshua Will Always Be in Nigeria by Nobody: 6:33pm On Feb 23, 2020
all the goons on here who are lying claiming they live abroad but misses Nigeria so much. why not go back and live in Nigeria permanently? you miss Because Nigeria is a lawless country where you are allowed to harras people or do whatever you like and gets away with it, No finger prints, no criminal records No nothing. If you live in the US you can not just do whatever you like. You must abide by the law unlike in the shithole called Nigeria.

Go and live in Nigeria if you really love or misses Nigeria that much. I was in Nigeria the whole of december 2019 and january 2020, yes!! i enjoyed myself because i can afford to.I visit every year and that's it, i wouldn't want to live in Nigeria permanently.

Open defecations, filty drainages, noise pollution, Generator fumes, Bad roads, obnoxious workers, Police brutalities, extortions, kidnapping, Stray bullets, No lack of electricity, Armed robbers, everyone was expecting me to "dash" them money before they can render help.....let me stop here for now, i am going to smoke some weed, i will be back soon..

There is no way in hell i am going to live in Nigeria.

I have read a lot of comments on Nairaland and other social media platforms about the visit and activities of World Boxing Heavyweight Champion -Anthony Olaseni Oluwafemi Joshua in Nigeria.

Most Nigerians who migrated abroad will understand how powerful one’s root and source are. For instance, I never knew how much I love Nigeria until after I moved to the United States for graduate school. It was then I began to miss the food, the music, the culture and uniqueness of Nigeria. In the U.S, I follow Nigerian news and listen to Nigerian music way more religiously than I ever did when I was living right inside Nigeria. There is no day I don’t remember and think about Nigeria because that is my root and source.

Anthony Joshua understands the important roles ancestors and roots play in the destiny of Africans. That explains why he even came to Nigeria with his son! He is also trying to make sure that his son(named Temiloluwa) also stay connected to his root and ancestors. Many Nigerians think things are terrible in the country(Anthony Joshua knows about all the problems facing Nigeria - he had his secondary school in Ogun State) but home will always be home; no matter what. No matter where you migrate to, they will always trace your roots back to Nigeria - so the country is forever your home.

There are lots of strengths and inspiration that can be drawn from embracing one’s roots and ancestors. When the chips are down and things become tough, remembering the impossible struggles of your ancestors, the difficult stories of people in Lagos(or your local community) can inspire you to brave the odds and fight relentlessly until you win.

Even Deontay Wilder has claimed he is of Nigerian descent. This means he has gone through some self reflections and he has realized that his unusual strength comes from his ancestors who he has traced to Nigeria.

When Anthony Joshua wanted to reclaim his belts some weeks ago, he made his way into the ring with his favorite Fela Anikulapo’s music. He will always visit the Fela Shrine because it reminds him of his childhood in Nigeria. He will always visit Makoko(one of the worst slums in Nigeria) because that is where people fight with all their heart and soul - even though they are not paid to and they do so with enormous passion and risks. He will always claim Sagamu because that is where his ancestors hail from. With these stories, experiences and prayers - Anthony Joshua will continue to enjoy the blessings and goodwill of his ancestors, his source and his root. That is the spirit he wants!

When Joshua met with the Nigerian government, people complained. Now he has returned to his source to connect with his childhood memories and people are still complaining. To be honest, how many Nigerians can afford to fly to different locations to support Anthony Joshua during his boxing matches? In his last match with Ruiz, over 10,000 British flew to Saudi Arabia to support Joshua. How many Naija people go Saudi to support am? Many of you even stayed online to post nonsensical comments about his performance.

Yet, he is home to celebrate his success with Makoko children because their sprit, stories and memories keep him going.

Guys, don’t ever forget your root and source - it is arguably your greatest strength.

Woa! All this comments...
Well I have learned alot but I will not accept alot.
I was born and brought up in Kaduna (I currently stay there), I remembered when my mom told me we have to leave Zaria
and move to Sabo which is kind of safer because of the sharia crisis (year 2000 which was the year I was born). Life over here is nice
I admit but gradually the place we moved to since 2000 is becoming something to be afraid of, people are been kidnapped and killed even
if their family provide ransoms. Last month, not to far from where we stay a Doctor's wife and his 2 kids was kidnapped.
The wife was killed by the kidnappers and the children were still in their custody. The man has to pay them again to release his 2 little kids.
Also, day before yesterday a man was killed and his family were kidnapped. This place I call home scares me, the year 2011 was the year I had savage thoughts
We were all in church when the crisis started, I was just 11 years old and I saw a man been burnt alive. The soldiers were showing might, people were killed
Not far from the Secondary school I attended a man was been burned alive. I saw a headless body, I saw human skull on the ground. I was scared
...Sorry for all the stories but a lot is still happening over here in Kaduna but it no longer scares me...
I haven't been outside the country but in seeing your comments it looks like some of you want someone like me to be killed in Kaduna/North
I don't know what it feels like to be away/far from home but know it is normal to miss home, we are humans this feelings makes us more human.
I don't want my children to see what I have seen.
I know people who have been killed just because they were not able to make it back to the safe side when its time for crisis
If I have the chance/opportunity to leave Nigeria I will and yes I will miss home but I can't come back. It will take man time for man to adapt to new things.

Most of you don't know how it feels like for a group of gunmen to step into your homes and adopt men/women/even children sad
Most of you don't know how it feels like to see your wife and kids been kidnapped and wife been killed after paying a huge some of money
Most of you don't know how it feels like to to see your own children seeing someone been brought down with a knife/even been beheaded
Most of you don't know how it feels like to experience insurgency, the killings and more and u all talk as if...
If you miss Nigeria, if you still love Nigeria then come back. But u won't

Once more I will say, I haven't travelled abroad or stay abroad but
Do you know what it feels like to be in the US for 8 years and then come back home(Nigeria) in the name of u miss home to start preparing his/her CV... (I will stop here because u know the rest)

If you live in the US, am happy for you. Pls visit home because you miss home because this is what most of us will all do when we find ourselves over there
and stop all this...

As for me, if I find myself in the US, I will be very happy and yes I will miss home. I will love to take my mother with me because I can't live her back here to see all this I can't she deserves better and If life is not easy in the US then We/I will work harder. Life is not easy generally, u don't expect $1m to land in ur acct. the moment u step foot in the US, do u?
So stop all this kind stupid talk/comments. Anywhere we find ourselves as humans we are bound to face hardship/difficulties for this teaches us alot...
If ur village is in Sambisa Forest and u find ur self in US will u miss home?
If ur among the Chibok girls and u finally escaped from the hands of those monsters, finding urself in the US/England/more will u want to come back home...
Abegi stop all this...

We na don vex me sef!

Nigerians will always be Nigerians.

God help us all.
What exactly is ur point?

Truth be told, no true Nigerian can ever turn his back on his country, no matter how underdeveloped it has become...

I keep telling them... You can never gain complete acceptance outside this nation. That Green card or Citizenship whatever will never gloss over the fact that you don't truly belong, and will never fully belong!!!

The question then becomes

What is the black man's obsession with "acceptance"?

If you are not "accepted"
So fvck what?

Many white south Africans know that there is a lot of resentment against them

But they dont give a fck
They still hold that country with an iron fist economically and run the show

Jews (well many of them) know that there is a concept called "Anti semitism" and they have suffered quite a bit, but they dont care

They run the affairs of the banking world with IRON FIST

These are just two of other examples

Calling Sade Adu and Seal sellouts because they dont conform to your standard of how an Africam descent person should be is not cool...

Please, do a proper research... Most of those immigrants never forget their heritage or background, however successful they become. They can merely pretend to be cool with their perpetual outcast situation, but deep down they resent it totally, and they should!!!

What we are talking about goes beyond acceptance! It's about identity, it's about legacy... We are talking heritage here!!! These are eternal conceptual principles that transcend time and money (Everything in life is not about business and wealth)!!!

Anthony Joshua, Israel Adesanya, Sadio Mane, Mo Salah, Victor Moses, Leon Balogun, etc, could easily have stuck with sole successful careers in the naturalized countries, but nope, they keep going back.... Cos, at the end of it all, a sense of belonging (Not mere acceptance) is a great or huge part of fulfillment in life!!!

See sir, it is your prerogative to gloss over issues like this, same with any other person. That doesn't make it less of a big deal!

@ the bolded

What you have to understand is that VERY few things are universal to overcome

Some make a big deal out of it
Others dont

You said big deal

The question is.....

To who?

I don't know why that is difficult for some to accept

Your heritage is your heritage and u SHOULD be proud of it

But that is about it.

Many Jews do not know the road to Israel (Bernie Sanders and co for example, they are so many, yet that does not male them less Jewish)
It's where your ancestors came from and that is about it

There are Latinos I know of (fourth generation) who have never been to Mexico in their lives and will never go there

Do they recognise they are latino
Of course
Do they make a big deal out of it?

Not everyone does

Even me
I have igbo parents
But born and raised In Lagos
We dont spend much time in the SE
We hardly go there

My parents go a few times out of obligation and stuff

Do we recognise our igbo ancestry

Yes indeed

Do we male a big deal out of it?
No we don't

Even for our relatives in diaspora and some nairalanders in diaspora

Some come very often with their kids to Nigeria
