Apple CEO Steve Jobs has died, Apple has announced. ABC News and other news organizations reported the death earlier this evening. Jobs was 56-years-old.

Jobs was the mastermind behind the iPad, the iPod, the iPhone, the iMac and iTunes. He transformed personal use of technology and his contributions have been compared to those of Henry Ford and Walt Disney, according to the USA TODAY piece reported by William Welch and Jon Swartz.

On Wednesday evening, the Apple homepage featured a black and white photo of the technology icon wearing a black turtleneck with simply the words, "Steve Jobs 1955-2011."

In 2004, he fought off a rare form of pancreatic cancer and in 2009, underwent a liver transplant. On Aug. 24, he announced he no longer was able to continue his duties at Apple.
