Why Is This So In The South East?? I Need Explanation

So today I decided to travel to Owerri from onitsha for a business meeting, the journey was meant to be a 1hr30min journey or less, but the check point for such short distance was sooo much!!

Like literally every 1km of the road has checkpoint, it's so bad that from a particular check point, you can basically see another check point ahead.

Ranging from the Army to the police to FRSC. Basically every force is on the road and all of them including the army were collecting bribe from the drivers. I actually felt bad for the drivers because it was too much. I felt really disgusted as well because I expected them to distinguish themselves but no they didn't.

I guess this is why the transport rate here is on the high side.

Now I've spent 4hrs on the road due to traffic induced by these forces from blockage of the road

Last week I came back from Abuja to Anambra and the check point were few across the north and I kept wondering.

Is there insurgency in the SE or is the crime rate high here or what exactly is the cause of this excess checkpoints / extortion points
did you forget when the president said that all checking points should be removed all over the nation? What did PDP and ipob said then?
Many of you from that side of the country accused Buhari that he want to remove the checking points so that his Fulani men can have easy assess to kill your people. Now who do you want to blame?
Ipob terrorists and PDP are full of hatred, no matter the good intentions of Mr president to the South East your people must be against it . Opposition is not madness .

SE leaders and the Ohaneze group are grossly inefficient.

There is nothing they have been able to get for their people from the unitary central government.

The vacuum in leadership is what is making the youths join IPOB.

The northern leaders are more aggressive in ensuring their people get something from the unitary government.

For example they said attack on Boko is attack against the north and so you can see the members drive around Nigeria territory in conveys and take away hundreds of people and nobody would be arrested.

SE does not have leaders and Ohanaeze is a practical joke. The read from the news media that Sultan of Sokoto defended Boko Haram. The so-called and moronic SE leaders had joined enemies of Ndigbo and Biafrans to criticize ESN already.

just look at what you are saying.
For twenty years of democracy in Nigeria, the south was in charge for 14 years, while the north only had 6yrs. So who is against the south?
When buhari came to power he ordered that all checking points should be removed from major roads, but you people said he is planning to invade the south east.
What do you really want?
BTW, only criminals are afraid of checking points.

It's also so in SW.

Osun has over 15 check points (main road ooo) if you're traveling from kwara to Ondo State.

infact in kwara state
you have some check points in ilorin, getting to idofian you'll see another one, to Ajase IPO you will about 6 check points down to Offa you'll see 3 check points from offa to okuku (in Osun) 3 - 4 check points.

okuku to Osogbo you'll see checkpoints.
Osogbo to Ondo or Ibadan checkpoints plenty.
These are just federal road I haven't made mention of Okuku to ila orangun to Oke ila orangun, Osogbo to ilesha to Akure, all those Esa Oke, Erin Ijesha, Iwo etc

But I'm not sure if it's up to SE own
We are talking about Checkpoints in SE and you are comparing it with the ones in SW.
Please don't wish to have it like us. For example if you are driving into Enugu from Kogi, you will see 19 checkpoints in a space of 10 meters. You will see like three ahead while settling the first one.

In Anambra, it is worse. Entering Onitsha from Asaba, you will facing stationary machine guns mounted on a barricade as if you are crossing international border followed by serious of force agents with multiple colours. That of Onitsha is uncountable, I managed to count that of Enugu and it was just one town. In Enugu city, they are just like rats, insulting and extorting people.
Going through Onitsha main city is like moving in a maximum security prison. Funniest is that they are not there to combat crime because touts and other idiots run their shit in front of them and if you call a police, they will tell you to your face that it is none of their business.

Be careful what you wish for. I've been in all SW states and none of them have a spec of what we have down here. Infact whenever we leave SE , the yorubas with us show sighs of relieve from countless security officers. Some even try to make their children not to see the massive machine guns paraded in SE by the military

You started your comment well but ended by leaving the impression that the security forces are protecting criminals up north and should also do the same for criminals down south.
In the north, they still live a kind of community lifestyle. If the police or security forces harrass citizens unnecessarily, the police commissioner or any other equivalent will be summoned to the Emir's palace to explain. Even in universities, if cultists start disturbing, they will call the VC and ask him how far

It bad of of the security agencies for collecting bribe from drivers. The cost is eventually transferred to innocent commuters at the end of the day.

It is a very bad situation. However, it is better than what would have been if the road is left free. Most times for us as a people we complain about most things because of the inconvinnience felt at that moment not knowing/considering that it is for a reason.

Our different communities/societies are the cause of the security situation of they get. The first time I visited the East as an adult, I saw a bank bullion van carrying money escorted by a Joint Task Force of Army, Mopol and others in about 3 Hilux Van. I was shocked and couldn't comprehend because everywhere I have been in Nigeria before then a bullion van will just pass you with only 1 police Hilux as escort with no much fuss.

To comprehend the situation, I inquired from a police man than once served there. He told me that the situation I witnessed was even better that it got to time they could not move cash in bullion van but it had to be moved via police helicopter. He said it is so because armed robbers must attack them so they have to prepare it. In such situations, innocent people loss their lives too so they had to consider the chopper. Do not forget that Kidnapping and similar crimes are prevalent there during this season. It actually commenced from there before it went national.

Those security arrangement are always put in place by the governors as the CSO of their state to ensure the security of their people. They cannot just fold their arms and watch. It is somehow the best of worst situations for them. Yes there will still be crimes with all of them there but then the rate will be reduced than what would have been.

I believe that If everything was ok those security guys would want to celebrate and party for Christmas too but then that is where they found themselves.. No excuse for bad behaviours anyway but a very high possibility is they that they may not even get their entitlement for the job from their authority.

I believe if we all can find a way to preach to our communities to avoid crimes it would go a long way in reducing the presence of security agencies from our community.

That's the reality in the south east. South east is under occupation by the Nigeria forces and those who we elected have done nothing to stop the situation

The way forward is that south east need to start electing leaders who are pro Biafra. Simple, anyone who is not pro Biafra should never be allowed to win any election the east.

This can be achieved peacefully. The igbos are occupied nation for now.

Honestly it's so shameful to our nation...
I traveled from Lagos to Kogi recently. From Lagos to Ondo state the check points is accepted. But like 200kms from Akure to Edo state, all through to Kogi, the check points is disheartening to a concern citizen of this nation. Just in 1km you can find not less than 3-4 security personnels in some case. And all of them collects money. In this situation, I pitty for the drivers honestly.

In reference to the bolded:
Last month, when I travelled from Lagos to Kaduna and back to Lagos (via SD Express; their Luxurious bus) I can categorically tell you that both to and fro, the roads across the North were FREE asf (there were virtually no slowdowns from delays of checkpoints).

My observation based on (but not limited to this) and from experiences of others. I've noticed that:

- All these police officers, road safety and co seem to target mostly small passenger vehicles for extortion (a.k.a stop&search)

-They rarely ever stop luxurious buses for the above.

*Also, luxurious buses commuting from the North and probably owned by a Northerner are allowed free pass.
Even in the North, there is no such things as police checkpoint in the cities/towns

Disclaimer: This is not to insinuate anything along tribalistic bias but just to point out the subtle and obvious disparity in the way things are done in certain places.

Many reasons.
1. The authorities— or whatever exists of the “authorities”— have a serious fear about the South East. They feel there will be a Biafra insurrection and the number of security forces is to intimidate Biafra and IPOB believers.
2. This regime loves projecting a show of strength and domination. Remember, it is the Fulani thing to dominate through violent capture of your lands.
3. Political reasons. The South East is a 5% remember? They have to made as uncomfortable as possible.
4. The checkpoints are money revenue for these security guys as compared to the West or the North or other areas. The South East is essentially a business hub for Nigeria and West Africa.

None of the reasons is for security reasons. None.
