@Wolllexxx, You are so right, people should share with us here what they are doing, so that we all can learn.

@RURIE, can all those ingredients for the chicken feed be sourced locally, if so, where can someone get them?

@Okeykanu, check your email and let me know.

LITTLE OR NO CAPITAL INVESTMENT

There is a big money business that can be started for next to nothing, with low risk, that involves giving away special cards. These cards are DISCOUNT CARDS, wallet-sized cards that allow the bearer to receive discounts at participating businesses. No special knowledge, education or experience are required for total success in this business.
You can start small with little or no investment, develop it in your spare time, and parlay it into a $100,000 a year income - all within the next twelve months or so.
Believe it! You can easily make $50,000 in the next six months or less! After that, you can practically be guaranteed at least that much, but probably much more, every year for the rest of your life, without, really working!

Okay People, sorry for my long absence. I have been doing some other things that have kept me away from the blog.

I am back now to give you live updates on the happening on the farm and also post pictures of my eggs in crates! smiley

I ended up not buying the layer cages and it has in some way affected the turn out of my chickens. I have been burdened with tackling rodents and diseases.

The problems We faced that really hit us was the loss of birds due to prolapse? (but we have rectified this with changes to their feeds).

we started out with 1000birds, found like 20 cockerels in them when they grew up, so we sold them and ate some too.

While they were young like 2months old, rain entered their house and we lost quite a number.

As at our last physical count about 4months ago, we had 784 left. More have died since that time but all of that has stabilised now, we now get over 20 crates everyday.

Even with all of these mortality, I can reassure you all that the business has paid off for me.

And that is why we are going ahead to buy the next set of 2000 DOC now, make una wish me well. grin

@basking4me, could you please explain what prolapse, and what you did to fix the problem? And what are some specifics you did to combat rodents problem as well.

Thanks

Welcome back basking4me. Big relief that we can once again benefit from experience. I took the time to check Prolapse as requested by fnk. I hope the house benefits from this:

What is a prolapse?

A prolapsed vent happens when the hen’s vent (cloaca) turns inside-out and falls outside her body. Prolapses can occur in any animal, and chickens are no exception.
It is pretty obvious when a prolapse has occurred. You will see the red flesh of the vent sticking out, and it will be clear that she has been turned inside-out from her vent.

Why do prolapses occur?

A prolapsed oviduct or “blowout” can occur in a hen who has begun laying too early, or in a chicken who has passed an unusually large egg. Overweight hens are also at risk of having a prolapse. And some chickens are simply built such that a prolapse is more likely to occur.

Will it happen again?

Sadly, the occurrence of another prolapsed vent is very high. Keep a close eye on your hen, and watch her for another prolapse in the future. If it occurs again, please consider having her culled. A prolapsed oviduct can be extremely dangerous, and the risk of pain and infection is very high with serial prolapses.
Causes of Prolapse
The overly fat pullet at point of lay is a prime target for prolapse. The use of a rearing program that allows her to eat ad lib, when she should be slightly restricted, or one that encourages over consumption of protein is asking for trouble because of the association of high levels of protein and egg size.
Equally at fault is the mistimed light program that brings immature pullets to point of lay before the oviduct muscles have developed elasticity and strength. Worse still, perhaps, is the too-sudden increase in day length that results in erratic ovulation - - many double-yolked eggs which, by size alone, can cause prolapse or blowouts.
The laying of an egg is invariable accompanied by some eversion of the oviduct. This is out. The tissues around the vent are wonderfully elastic, even in young pullets at the point of lay and after the egg is produced, and everything returns to its original position with no harm done. Nor harm done, that is, if we haven't set the stage for trouble by faulty feeding and lighting.
If we have allowed the bird to build up too much abdominal fat, this reduces the elasticity of the oviduct and vent muscles, often to the point where they cannot return to their normal position - - hence, prolapse, or blowout. If the light program has encouraged too early egg production or oversized eggs, before the muscles can cope with the situation, we find ourselves with the same problem.

Other causes of prolapse

The entire blame for prolapse cannot be placed at the door of light and feed. There are other causes: over crowding, enteritis, hormone imbalance, and one of the most common - - physical damage inflicted on the oviduct tissues. In this latter case, picking at the slightly exposed oviduct, as it is laid, can sometimes inflict sufficient bruising and irritation upon the tissues that they prolapse after the next egg is produced.

Control of Prolapse

In the control of prolapse, the laying house operator has four important areas to watch.
1.He should make sure that the incoming pullets are properly beak trimmed.
2.He should be alert to his feeding program, controlling any tendency for the flock to overeat and put on excessive weight.
3.He should be able to quickly reduce light intensity at feed and water level to one foot-candle, if necessary.
4.He should avoid too heavy stocking.

Keep in mind that outbreaks of prolapse and pickouts are nearly always triggered by something we mismanaged somewhere back along the line. These problems can be prevented and they can be controlled.
