After you finish speaking all your English, bend your head, come close, let me tell you something:

If you study Law, you will be poor in life.

If you are as smart as you say, study Engineering (Mechanical precisely, its broad and unlimited), or go for IT (start with the programming skills, that's what IT or Networking is all about).

If not, you will come and seek for advice on the way forward.

First, you can succeed in whatever career if you practice it with competence (excellence) and consistency.

Secondly, expand your benchmark above Nigeria. The world is now a global village. New career niches are evolving; AI Law and Corporate Law, et al. Think of being a global professional.

Thirdly, beyond academic qualifications, you need distinctive soft skills to succeed in this age.

Best wishes.

Hello Nairalanders,

I've been here for a while now and having evaluated certain things on the forum I think I'll get the sincerest of answers to my question.

I intend to study law; I'm good with my English, have a formidable sense of logical and critical reasoning and naturally charismatic. These should be the basic requirements for intending lawyers( at least, according to the naive me).

Academically, I will humbly say I know my worth: with the beyond-basic knowledge of Government, a fair knowledge of the mechanics of politics and the ability read without wearing out, I suppose a lawyer is in the oven, soon to be baked.

However, my very close confidant advised me to drop the dream and seek something viable. My mother who have not had much to do with lawyers and who believe them to be just hungry folks scavenging for cases from one police station to another doesn't think it's a good shot.

Now, I plead we leave sentiments aside. Be critical with your reply and please, let your comments not be made out of prejudice.

What are my chances of making it as a lawyer in today's Nigeria?

PS: You might have better options for me, like migrating to a computer-related course or learn a soft skill. I've gotten much of that . Just kindly answer the question.

Thanks in anticipation.

Many people will learn too.

You must learn to lie for a living or you'll be termed ‘charge and bail’ after upto seven years of wearing suits and ancient wigs in the sun.

You must learn to say white is black and prove the chemistry.

You must learn to say a murder case was actually an accident, that the deceased hit the bullet, not otherwise.

You must have about six lines on your head, from forehead backwards.

You must learn to confuse the judge and be a judge in your own case, even if the law forbids it.

You must call a tort a crime, an a tortfessor a criminal.

You must see an invitation to threat case as an avenue to adjourn a case for five years.

Bribery will be your porridge yam.

You must learn to collide with the judge to shift the case to Maiduguri from Port Harcourt so that the Plantiff or Accused will tire out and the case won.

You must learn to wear one socks for twelve years. Oh, my oh.

You must be a politician's puppet to grow or you will end up a lecturer.

You must be a womanizer.

Just learn how to register companies in CAC.

And you're good to go.

That's what most lawyers do now.

If that is all what is expected of a lawyer in Nigeria, then he should register for ICSAN professional exam instead.

I am a lawyer, not doing the litigation thing though. Work in a bank and paying my bills.
Just be positive and carve out a niche for yourself.

With versatility and resourcefulness, any lawyer will always make it big anywhere in the world. There're more areas to explore to extract financial success other than from litigation. Business/economic development is one area any versatile and resourceful lawyer, seasoned or not, can always explore and extract success, especially developing nations' based lawyers - it entails creating own leads, though.

The richest professionals are lawyers.
The poorest professionals are lawyers.

Don't let poor people advice you on your future, look for those who have made a killing a and excelled in the field of law to request for their mentorship.

If you to know how to lie, or even to defend the accuser even if he is guilty that all because standing for the truth doesn't pay in Nigeria.

I'm not a lawyer, but I always wonder why lawyers don't venture into Entertainment Law, it sound lucrative to me, considering the amount of record label deals, copyright issues, brand ambassadors deals etc. I believe if you carve a niche for yourself, sky would be your starting point. I'm just thinking aloud.

Op i can't tell you your chances of succeeding in any given course what I'll say is while in school don't get carried away with your white and black, raising shoulder and chasing girls as per law student. School is the best time to widen your Horizon. If you are not on the first-class try and have a side hustle because most lawyers end up making it through their side hustles than through court cases.

Meet with lawyers, ask questions, try and intern in law firms and see one on one how lawyers even those with first-class are hustling. Don't get carried away by the name of the firm. Put your hears to the ground and listen well to the subtle words they say.

Except you are from a connected family, it will take years for you to stand on your two feet as a lawyer no matter how good you are but it's possible.

If you can port to computer science, great. It helps when you want to leave the country as IT jobs are always available abroad.

The president does not respect the rule of law, laws does not apply to the elites, you must become a tool in the hand of some politicians to be known.
Being a lawyer may not pay now because of where the country is headed, but might be in the future pay.

Get into a federal university preferably first generation or reputable private university like Afe Babalola. Strive to make a first class, minimum a 2.1. During your undergraduate studies, enrol into various extracurricular activities that will further develop your skills, personality and NETWORK (it's your networth). Go to symposiums, conferences, speak at events, write, meet people etc. Moot cases nko? Participate. Cross collaboration with other departments like accounting? Do them. Join clubs etc. Participate in internships. Just network profitably. Afterwards, head to law school. As in undergraduate, strive to make a first class, minimum a 2.1. Prepare for LSAT. Again, network, network and network. Apply to top and mid-tier law firms, banks, professional services firms etc.

If you have passion for it go for it.

If you want to make money, design a business for your self.

To make money, as you are studying your law degree, ensure you have a business plan you want to pursue
