this wasn't ajayi's crowther account, it was written by Sir William baikie
Crowther worked under the command of Baikie. As a native, Crowther contributed enormously to Baikie's works. Many of Crowther's documents were submitted to Baikie for compilation. So, i won't be in doubt if Crowther wrote this.

The claim that Bishop Ajayi Crowther write an Igbo book is funny since he never spoke Igbo. He may have known some words, but not enough to write a book
Crowther was a linguist. He also worked with his junior colleagues of ibo descent. He also wrote a book on grammar and vocabulary in Nupe without being a nupe speaker.
Crowther was also instrumental in producing a vocabulary book in bonny dialect.

Bishop crowther the Krio, actually saw Akpu in Igboland and brought it to yorubaland.

The generous people of Igboland who love strangers, gave him basket of Cassava (Akpu) when he was leaving Igboland as they waved him bye. It is in the culture of Igbos to always do that.

Crowther got to his base in yorubaland and gave to the his yoruba hosts to plant some, that was the genesis of (cassava) fufu in yorubaland.

Igboland is a mega farm of cassava, and it is called 'female crop' in Igboland while Yam is the 'male crop', (see Things fall apart by Chinua Achebe). Every household till today has a cassava farm in their mbubo (garden) in Igboland. It has always been like that before Crowther's great grand father was born.
Who are the 24 idiots that like your comment? grin

Cassava was introduce to Lagos from south America

At least you read where he talked of a certain"God"being worshipped even before the coming of Christianity. Igbos used "Chukwu" (God) as names before the coming of religion.

To be honest with you all black Africans believe in an Almighty God that created Heaven and Earth but they use all their Idols and deities as intermediaries to try to reach him

It is my Personal Opinion that the episode of Moses and the awesome display of God's Power during the 10 plagues of Egypt God used to deliver the Isrealites from Slavery in the Book of Exodus had such a Profound effect on the entire African continent and Belief System that it established a Permanent belief in an Almighty God

It was how Africans Chose to approach him through their lesser God's that was Chaotic

read well my bro....AJayi crowther was the first African to preach about christianity to the Igbo people...About 8-10yrs later J C Taylor built the first church in igboland.

Technically, not accurate. Samuel Crowther came with Baikie in 1854 to do ethnographic. However, in 1857 J.C Taylor who was his contemporary came with him in 1857. However, J. C Taylor opened a church first in Onitsha and then Crowther at Bonny.

Actually American Rice is a Native of West Africa

It was a Popular staple food especially among the Sierra Leonians and Wollof(Jollof Rice)

It went with the Slaves to America

It is the Popular food item Africa gave the rest of the World

Thanks for the information.

I thought as much too. But one website I consulted for the research regarding my post you quoted asserted that rice was brought in by foreigners via what is now the country of Senegal

Even then I also know we have our own local variety of rice, so you may be right

He learnt the language

Most languages in Africa were first written down by Christian missionaries . They learned the language first then they tried to transcribe it in Roman writing.

Muslim clerics also provided written forms of some African languages like Hausa too...in Arabic script

Infact many missionaries then and now had to wear many hats, including linguist.

Add the fact that even today there are many Nigerians that can speak upwards of two or three or more local languages. Comes of living in a county with 350 different languages

He couldn't have done it all alone by himself. He was working for the CMS church who had ordained him as first African Bishop.
He was appointed to assist Dr. William Baikie in his expedition to Niger Delta. The truth is without Crowther, the expedition of CMS missionaries to Nigeria would have been a massive fail.

Ajayi Crowther was the first to Preach the Gospel at Onitsha, Aboh Asaba and Bida
he sometimes used interpreters

Many Yoruba Speaking Itsekiri could speak Pidgin English well and had already been trading with Igbos for Centuries

Along the river Niger Itsekiri and Ijaws dominated the Waterways up to Aboh and from Aboh onwards Igala and Igbo
.
He brought JC Taylor to Onitsha Later

Ajayi Crowther Preached the Gospel everywhere he went
.Thank God

He preached too when he came, so yes first preacher but J C Taylor established the first church. J. C Taylor was a contemporary and not under Crowther.

Either way, they both did great. It is however a shame that they later had a strained relationship

I mentioned earlier that Crowther came in 1854 for the first time, and Taylor 57. I was only correcting that Taylor had his own independence rather than him working under Crowther or a subordinate.

You are missing the fact that Crowther was the first ordained African Bishop. While Taylor, a more junior colleague was trained and served under the leadership of Crowther, Crowther as well worked under the command of the likes of Henry Venn, Beecroft and Baikie. No one attains higher position without previously working under the command of his senior, such was the command structure of CMS. Crowther laid the foundation of the mission church in Onitsha and Bonny, while the Church Secretary from England appointed the Diocese.

You know how you all are when it comes to Land matters

You prefer meet your maker than to part with it

Please, It was Simon Jonas, an Igbo slave from Sierra Leone, that together with Schön a colonial missionary that brought the gospel to Igboland for the first time.
Precisely in today Aboh in Delta State.

"This gentleman read the Sermon on the Mount to the King. According to the journal of Schon and Crowther. "Obi was uncommonly taken with this. That a white man could read and write was a matter of course; but that a black man--an Ibo man--should know these wonderful things...was more than he could ever have anticipated." It was indeed at Obi's insistence that Simon Jonas was left behind at Aboh where he remained to preach the Gospel and expound the mysteries of the written word, while the rest of the expedition proceeded to Iddah".

He lead the Yoruba colonization of igboland under the guise of Christianity. That’s why they are all over SW the way Yoruba flood UK. It’s easier to associate with your colonial masters.

The British are the first people to bring christainity to igboland as far back as the 17th century not the yoruba bishop beside the igbos already know about the existence of God almighty and are already worshipping him in their own way compared to some tribes in nigeria that are deep in satan worship in their natural cultural practices before they converted to christainity and Islam.

And nope.
Bishop Ajayi crowther was never an Igbo speaker.
I'm yet to see any journal to suggest that Crowther could speak Igbo.

It was Simon Jonas who interpreted everything in Igbo to Obi Ossai of Aboh.
Ajayi crowther was a mere figure head in CMS gospel to Igboland.
You could easily have replaced him with someone from Kuvikiland and there wouldn't be a difference, because he never spoke the native Igbo language, and like the white missionaries, depended on Igbo slaves of Sierra Leone origin for interpretation of Igbo and all ground works involved in bringing gospel to Igbo speaking people.

It's madness and foolishness to suggest that Crowther produced written Igbo language.
He was a mere supervisor appointed by the church.

Taylor and Simon both of who were Igbo slaves of Sierra Leone origin brought the gospel to Igboland. Not one non Igbo speaking Crowther.

Development of the Onitsha Mission

"But to return to the work at Onitsha. The Rev. Taylor found himself busy preaching, teaching, visiting, building, healing, settling quarrels, studying the language and writing his journals. As already indicated, Taylor was helped in his pastoral work by Simon Jonas, the Catechist; there were also three Sierra Leone settlers in Onitsha who had come as traders, and along with other merchants resided at Laird's Port. (At this time Onitsha Waterside was known as Laird's Port.) This trading community gave much support to the missionaries. Taylor's first Sunday at Onitsha fell on August 2, 1857. He indeed felt that he was in a strange land, albeit the land of his ancestors: during the morning service his congregation numbered between 200 and 400, half-dressed men and women and naked boys and girls. The Sierra Leone traders from Laird's Port joined in the service and in singing the hymn "Jesus shall reign where'er the sun." Another service was held in the afternoon: to quote from Taylor's diary, "at half-past four p.m. I went to the King's Yard for Service... .His Majesty, King Akazua, with his captains and chiefs, were present. There were also present from 500 to 600 souls, all of whom behaved well... .The children laughed when we knelt down to pray." But "the conduct of the adults, on this occasion, was as orderly as one could wish, and they seemed much pleased with the attention given to their immortal interests."
