Yorubas are good in music and Yorubas are best in music are two afferent statements. I'll wait until he makes the second statement which obviously he is afraid of making. Phyno flavour and a lot of Rapper use more Igbo than English and are quite popular outside Nigeria. Not to mention that Gospel music uses more Igbo and has even grown to be more influential outside Nigeria than secular one 9 Likes 3 Shares |

Maybe the Igbos can help in answering that.. why they want to die on anything Yoruba to the extent that some of them now adopt Yoruba names just to feel among. Yoruba language is the sweetest language known to man and very palatable to the ears. 34 Likes 2 Shares |

I don't normally agree with Reno on most things but I have to say he did a good research and made brilliant observations on the impact of Yoruba language on the world music industry. I have already noticed it but not the extent that he has been able to articulate and summarized it. I love my heritage and my language, I make sure my kids try as much as possible to speak and understand it. E ka ro, eyin eyan mi... 60 Likes 6 Shares |

NGpatriot: There are some.truth in what he said. Having Passion for something requires time and little growth The igbo gene get no time for that. Look at agricultural sector, How many Igbos fit wait for cocoa (for example) to grow for 4 / 5yrs. Buh they can buy and export it or buy in large from those farmers etc. That's why there are little Igbo farmers 20 Likes 3 Shares |

It's not about the tribe the music originated from, it's about the talent of the musicians. It simply means that Yoruba has more talented musicians in Nigeria 19 Likes 1 Share |

Bros, you made sense for once and this doesn't have anything to do with sentiments. Even Burna Boy won Grammy cos of the fusion of Yoruba where he partly belongs in his music career. I was walking on the street of Miami in 2019( Miami Beach Road to be precise) and i was listening to Davido's song inside a club. I was like, our people must be the ones working here, for them to be playing this guy's music. I tried entering the place, those seen were white guys dancing seriously to his song. I smiled and walked out of the place. On Emirates and Qatar flights music menu, Davido, Wizkid, Tiwa Savage dem full there. BA's too...this I've seen and observed. I watch Hollywood latest movies and see oyinbos wearing ankara. I was like, we're getting there. Music and culture are our comparative advantages so, we need to explore this area and showcase it to the world. My wife's tailor would stop collecting clothes from Nigerian customers from July each year. Most of her customers are in the diaspora, those who would buy and resell to oyinbos and celebs over there. She's a graduate oo. Sadly, we don't have a futuristic government . Our tourism sector is nothing to write home about under this administration. Obj did so well by boosting this sector back then. Wetin concern mallam with entertainment? But they expect our naira to receive a boost. Emmanuel Macron came to Nigeria a couple of years back and headed straight for fela shrine, instead of visiting aso vila or elsewhere. He even danced to his music and lagos organised a dinner for him. We've lost it in this area. Jonathan helped nollywood too. Oyinbos now watch our movies on Netflix. This is another form of investment which the government isn't looking at. By the time oil begins selling for 5usd a barrel, maybe they'd look inwards. Squid game was banned , suffered a set back. But now, before you think squid game, you'd think its source and country of origin first. That's it. Only God knows who did this to us as a country. This isn't the Nigeria we dreamt of. I wish the youths would do the needful by booting out these old fellas who are bereft of ideas , come 2023. 44 Likes 4 Shares |

Ttalk: How is Angelique Kidjo a francophone artiste? Don't you know she's from a part of Benin Republic where Yoruba is spoken as a second language a d she's been using that dialect in her songs over the years? Anyway to the topic at hand, what Reno is saying seems true if you take it at surface value. However the real truth is that the common denominator in all these names is Lagos, a cosmopolitan city and one of the most populated cities in the world, located in the Southwest of Nigeria. Due to its location, Yoruba is the dominant language in the city hence why its that way. Once your music is accepted and blows up in Lagos, Nigerians all over the world will accept it too. Even at that, we've had a few other artistes break out internationally even without working from Lagos so yes there are some exceptions. My point is that it's never really about the language but somehow, music is a universal language. If your song is very good and you're lucky, and maybe with good marketing, your song will go international whether you sing it in Korean, English, French, Yoruba, Efik, etc. 5 Likes 2 Shares |
Re: RENO - Why Does Music Of Yoruba Origin Breakthrough Globally ? by franchasng: 8:30am On Jan 13, 2022 |
The answer to this question is LAGOS State. Lagos State have a phenomenal influence and power over everything in Nigeria. Any music that got produced and accepted in Lagos always gets accepted in Nigeria. Lagos hosting almost all Nigerian tribes makes Yoruba dialect more easily understood and accepted by all Nigerian tribes than any other Nigerian dialect. Reno Lagos is the answer. Another point to reckon is the fact that Yorubas are jaiye people....they love parties a lot. That's why Yorubas close down roads to celebrate festivals or even naming ceremony. You cannot dare that in Igbo land where everybody is business focused. Yoruba culture is more of partying and merriment which make their youths focus more on singing to entertain their people and others.....then the Lagos factor helps them sell nationwide and gets more easily accepted because almost all Nigerian tribes live in Lagos and speak and understand Yoruba....making Yoruba dialect easily accepted. 15 Likes 4 Shares |

helinues: They all blew in Lagos....U cant take away the lagos effect...cos lagos is a representation of all Nigerians. Once lagosians like the song, they will take it to all their villages...Now that Internet and social media even exist to make it easy to share. Capture lagos and capture Nigeria.the guy from chibok who lives in lagos and likes Olamide will take the song to chibok, same as the guy from Otuoke or Daura 6 Likes 1 Share |

helinues:where were they based, where do dey sell their music. Reno said mostly the truth but that Lagos factor is there, they promote more of Yoruba songs in Lagos and when you blow in Lagos you've gone global. Yorubas own most entertainment houses in lagos, award shows and promotions/radio/TV/press. These are the factors that help music in Yoruba language. 7 Likes 3 Shares |
