Bros the problem was there before the war. But by then Ikwerre land was occupied by the Igbos. If you say anything you could be a target for assassination. You can imagine when someone starts to change your community name! Look! the mistake of Igbos going for war and losing was a mistake they can never recover from. It was not just the IKwerres but the whole of the minorities of the Niger Delta. Why do you think Isaac Boro took up arms against the government? Why do you think the Igbo leaders the of Ironsi and Ojukwu took it personal to hunt him down by all means?
Elechi Amadi wrote what he saw and other Ikwerres saw. No Ikwerre man has ever disputed him.
i have read a lot of accounts about the war,on the issue of changing names of ikwere land to igbo name, might not completely stand as fact, because nobody have been able to provide to the readers what was the names of most of this communities before it was changed?

I still find it difficult to understand were igboman offended an ikwere man during and after the war.

Isaac Boro didn't target the igboman from the south east, rather he targeted the minority tribe of rivers state,he killed the king of kalabari and chased the king of opobo to exile,

So many minority communities in rivers state suffered so much casualties in the hands of Adaka and his Group of militia men.

The evidence was manifested when rivers state was created, ijaws took it as their personal property ,if you are from the minority or igbo speaking tribe you will find it difficult to find a job with the then government.

My question remains, why is it difficult for most to you to acknowledge the fact that the reign of ijaws in rivers state was hell for you guy's?

The agitation continued after rivers was created, the likes of ken saro wiwa changed the struggle to ogoni kingdom and the likes of obi wali of blessed memory ,these are evidence that igboman was never the problem.

The way Rivers politics plays out holds a frightening future for the Ikwerres.

They have been feeling fly with the subjugation of the Ijaws and other riverine people in Rivers.

Amaechi did 8 years and Wike is rounding off another 8 years.

I daresay that the Ikwerres will be in political wilderness for a very long time as soon as Wike vacates office next year.

The Ijaws, Kalabaris and Ogonis are about to let off years of pent-up anger.

The Ikwerres will become the common enemy...The fact that they unwisely chose to antagonize the Igbos will not bode well for them in the future...

They think they're smart but on the contrary, they're digging their own grave. Kalabaris, Okrikas and other ijaw speaking tribes are promoting a united ijaw front while the Ikwerres keep antagonizing Igbos. They keep influencing other Igbo speaking indigenes to take up independent ethnic nationality. That balkanization they promoted is about to take root. Last I checked, they have just a couple of local governments, so I wonder how they hope to dominate Rivers State politics with that.

Peter Odili is an Igbo man from Ndoni, he ruled for 8 years and Amaechi took over, despite the fact he is Ikwerre man, another Ikwerre man in the person of Wike succeeded him. There is insinuation that another Ikwerre man is hoping to succeed Wike too.

Now compare to Delta State, another heterogeneous state that has ensured peace by rotating its governorship.

Aside that, nobody knows what will happen in Nigeria going forward. The country may eventually collapse and fall into the hands of tribal warlords as once predicted by CIA. What will become of Ikwerre now they've made enemies on their North and South?

Elechi Amadi wrote what he saw and other Ikwerres saw. No Ikwerre man has ever disputed him.

It all started immediately the europeans created Nigeria..
The Ibo political class who are mostly from the present day Anambra and Enugu decided to make the old eastern region a one ethnic region.
The western region tried the same.. but it failed too resulting to the creation of Midwest region..

In the eastern region .. when they asked the groups who the were the refused to identify as Igbo.. they rather identify as Ndoki (Ukwa), Izon(Ijo), Etche, Ngwa, Ibibio, iwhnuruoha, Efik etc.
But this did not go down well with the Igbo leaders, who actually new if the don't stop them, the east will disintegrate.

There was a new agenda to send some of their kinsmen to igbonize this groups..
The made it possible for them to get jobs at the detriment of the indigenes.
The aim was for the indigenes to become poor as sees the igbos as a group the should imitate.
It worked for a while. But suddenly attracted envy when some of this minority became educated and civilized and attempted to change the status quo which also failed.

This caused the domination of Aba, and Port Harcourt (which was the only Important province and sub province then) by foreigners.
The foreigners also changed some names that did not suit well with them.
Aba being an important city was changed from Abah Ngwa to Abah alone, Ugwulagbo was changed to Ugwunagbo etc
Same thing was done to the Ikwere people.

The civil war served as an avenue for the indigenes that rejected the igbo identity to distanced them selves from igbo.
The Ikwere people decided to return their town names to the original names.
But they unfortunately went as far as creating new names that were neither Ikwere nor igbo in their bid to distanced them selves from igbo.

Igbos should understand that igboid language does not belong to them only..
The Ikwere should also understand that they have been speaking igboid language before the igbos came. Even though they igbos tried to force their own dialect of Igbo on them.

I believe that we are all from the same origin and we are all related.
But we don't share a general name.
Just like Ibibio, Efik, Annang etc the are the same people but they don't have a general name .. same with all igboid groups..

Resistance to a system that have successfully functiioned over a hundred years is the hardest job to do;reason why nairaland keep banning me;I was banned for 3 months ;I just came back two days ago;ive missed all my friends here;I love all indigenous Nigerians that are not afraid to push back againts all odds;they are killing us;our future ;and the future of our unborn children depends on it;

The symbol of the resistance of Fulani enslavement of the South is Biafra. Biafra has continued to be the beacon to which every intelligent person residing in Southern Kaduna, Jos, Pankshin, Jalingo, through Wukari, Makurdi, Otukpo, Ankpa, Nsukka, Enugu, Onitsha, Owerri, Umuahia, Katsina-Ala, Obudu, Ikom, Abakaliki, Calabar, Port Harcourt, Opobo, Warri, Agbor, Asaba, and Uromi in the East to Ilorin, Okene, Ogbomosho, Ibadan, Abeokuta, Lagos, Ado Ekiti, Akure, Okitipupa, Benin City, and Sapele in the west must look to for freedom, self-determination and defeat of the Fulani scheme to conquer and enslave the South. We are not suggesting that every nation encompassing these cities should become Biafra. Far from it. Each nation in the geographical area called Nigeria must decide for itself whether it wants to continue to stay in Nigeria and become enslaved or get out of Nigeria and assume its own identity, freedom and nationality. Biafra has made its choice – Biafra will get out of Nigeria and will not be conquered, Islamized and enslaved. It will not matter how difficult it is; it will not matter how long it takes and it will not matter whether Nigeria likes it or not. This is Biafra’s destiny and we will take our destiny in our hands. When God created human beings, He bestowed on them certain inalienable rights – the right to life [right to live your life and not have someone else snuff it out]; freedom of speech [the right to speak your mind]; freedom of association [the right to decide for yourself who you want to associate or be with]; freedom of religion [the right to choose how to worship God]; freedom of assembly [the right to assemble and meet with other people of your choice for purposes other than committing a crime].There are other natural rights.

These rights are enshrined in the United Nations Charter and have been recognized and enforced in most parts of the world in recent times. It is as a result of these inalienable rights that the following new countries were created since 1990. They are: Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Belarus, Ukraine, Moldova, and Russia, (all of which were forcibly conscripted into the former Soviet Union or USSR); Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia Herzegovina, Montenegro, Kosovo, Serbia, Macedonia (all of which were formerly cobbled together and held by force as Yugoslavia by Marshall Tito until 1990-1992); Slovakia and Czech Republic (both of which were in a forced relationship formerly called Czechoslovakia); East Timor which was formerly occupied by Indonesia and South Sudan which was separated from Sudan and gained its independence in July 2011. These 26 countries all became independent between 1990 and 2011 as a result of the enforcement of the principle of self-determination by the United Nations.

President Buhari knows this and agrees with the United Nations principles of PEACEFUL COEXISTENCE, and SELF-DETERMINATION for all people. This is why in his address to the United Nations General Assembly on September 28th, 2015, General Muhammadu Buhari, the president of Nigeria stated, “Mr. President, (referring to the UN General Assembly President) As we engage in these annual debates, we need remind ourselves of the principles that led to the founding of the United Nations. Among those are and . In this context, Mr. President, the unresolved question of self-determination for the Palestinian people and those of Western Sahara, both nations having been adjusted [adjudged] by the United Nations as qualifying for this inalienable right must now be assured and fulfilled without any further delay or obstacle. The international community has come to pin its hopes on resolving the Palestinian issue through the two-state solution which recognizes the legitimate right of each state to exist in peace and security. The world has no more excuses or reasons to delay the implementation of the long list of Security Council resolutions on this question. Neither do we have the moral right to deny any people their freedom or condemn them indefinitely to occupation and blockade.” President Buhari himself (not a surrogate, not a representative) made these statements in front of Heads of State of countries of the world, members of the United Nations, gathered in the hallowed halls of the United Nations in New York. If you remove the word(s) “Palestine” and “Western Sahara”, and substitute the word “Biafra” in their place, it becomes obvious to all right thinking people that President Muhammadu Buhari supports the right of Biafra to become a sovereign, independent nation. To say or think otherwise would amount to exercise in cognitive dissonance, and outright dishonesty. The people of Biafra therefore hold President Buhari to his words spoken in front of heads of state of the countries of the world at the General Assembly of the United Nations, in New York, on December 28, 2015.

..

To liberate our self from this unfortunate condition we find our self we have we have to work with whole southern Nigeria, we need the support for middle belt too..
After that everyone will go separate ways.
But Ngwa nation will prefer to join the Ikweres and other Niger Deltas than Biafran after the liberation.
Because these are the people we share same culture with.
Some south south state believes the present day Biafra will bring them back to what they suffered in the hands of the leaders of the Old Eastern Region (Igbo). The are less likely to accept.
Lesson: If you are at the top don't marginalize those at the bottom. Because in life people rise and people fall..
This is a reality that is presently playing out in Abia state..
It happened in Rivers.
It happened in Imo state (to the extent Sen Arthur Nzeribe started clamoring for Orashi state for the people of Orlu. grin but today table has turned Orlu is dealing seriously with those that once marginalize it. cheesy

Until you guys realize that the united nations does not support secession.
Look at what happened in Tigra in Ethiopia.
Look at what is happening in Donbass in Ukraine..
If you can't do it alone or with allies don't attempt it..(it will be suicidal)..

It is actually a curious situation.

Vagaries of human nature. The Ikwerres who were neither here nor there in Rivers politics are now strut about with an air of superiority and entitlement.

How many Ikwerres givernned Rivers State before Odili push them to the governorship in 2007?

They now believe they can insult and challenge the Igbos while also making enemies left, right and center.

We are watching to see how things will play out...

Other than normal beer parlour yarns.
Can you provide just one verifiable document by a neutral party that proves that Ndiigbo ever tried to Igbonize non Igbos in Eastern region?

Do you really know how Igbo society works?

These guys are not Igbo, abeg. The Igbos were majority in the Eastern region and they influenced the culture and language of other ethnic groups. It doesn't make the other ethnic groups Igbo.

My language has lots of similarity with the Igbo language, but thanks to our history, we know we are not Igbos.
but how come they couldn't influence AKwa IBOM to start speaking Igbo? They couldn't influence bcross River. They couldn't influence Benin. They couldn't influence ijaw etc..
Bros reason na abeg.

See the Ikwerres are igbos...infact, Ikwerres men those days love marrying igbo women. How then won't the language rub off on you guys since those Igbo women will teach their Ikwerre children the language?

If AKwa IBOM men married Igbo women at the rate Ikwerre men did, I'm pretty sure bunch of us would have had Igbo has a primary or second language

Afonja you can't hide yourself, shame on you.

Oga, do not twist history! Do you know what Biafran soldiers did to minority groups in the then Eastern Region? We the Ikwerres were killed because we were labelled "saboteurs" in our own land. The same treatment was meted out on other minority groups as well.

Do not get me wrong! I do not hate Igbos because I believe we are related. However, history must not be distorted. Biafran soldiers killed us in our own land. Not only that, we were dealt with decisively by the Nigerian troops because we were seen as co-conspirators.

We minorities suffered as well, we were killed in our thousands. How many of you today talk about the minorities killed? No! It is only the Igbo casualties that you talk about. Ojukwu declared a new republic after consulting with a committee mainly made up of Igbos, if not all. We were dragged into that civil war, we paid with out lives for it as well. I refer you to Chinua Achebe's ''There was a country.''

Why do you think most of us are against Biafra? We know the struggle of the Igbos is noble but most of us do not want to be part of it because of what we saw in the hands of Biafran soldiers and the civil war in general.

No true Ikwerre son will hate an Igbo man because some of our mothers, grandmothers and great-grandmothers are Igbos. My beloved paternal grandma was Igbo, from Imo State. We are brothers, we inter marry and we do things in common. WE ARE ONE!

I have heard Igbos saying shitty things about Ikwerres and vice versa. Some persons are only bitter because of the civil war experience, not because the Igbo man is a curse, and as such must be exterminated.

Thank you, boss.

I can't twist history, why should I when I have facts to present. Ordinarily, I have nothing against Ikwerres if not for the things they did and continue to do.

In a war, especially a bitter one like the Biafran civil war, nothing would be taken to chance and saboteurs/snitches are usually killed to serve as deterrent to others. It wasn't any form of targeted attack as you want to make it. That was why top Biafran military personnel like Ifeajuna and Banjo were killed.

What directly caused the declaration of Biafra and the war that followed was the genocide that happened to Easterners in Northern Nigeria. It was on record that both Igbos and minorities were killed which prompted the leaders in Eastern Nigeria to demand for breakup when it became evident that both federal government and Northern regional government refused to protect Easterners, minorities included. Ojukwu never declared Biafra unilaterally!

You said that Ikwerre suffered brutalities in the hands of Nigerian soldiers? Did it happen to them alone? Anioma Igbos suffered the worst pogrom ever recorded during the war in the hands of Nigerian soldiers! There were similar massacres in other places Nigerian army invaded including Calabar, Aba etc.

You said I should read about "There Was A Country" by Chinua Achebe. Lol, I bought the book the same year it was published and I have read it, likewise other historical books about post independent Nigeria. You can see the attached photos/excerpts for reference.

Nice read!
It's trite that there was no war but a pogrom against the Igbos and we as minorities were caught in the crossfire.
It's noble that we can share ideas without trading hurtful words.

Ikpeazu simply sees Wike as his brother ..
the same way Anambra sees Enugu as their brother..
It only an Imo state candidate that will make Ikpeazu and his kinsmen to have a divided opinion on who to support..
I don't agree with you. If that is the case, why is Enugu Governor also supporting Wike? They are supporting Woke for two reasons. First is envy. Those two Governors knows that they are failures and no one in South east will take them serious if they run for President. Hence they are envious of someone like Peter Obi who did well as Governor. Secondly, Wike has given million of dollars to Ikpeazu, Ugwuanyi and Makinde. He even took them to Madrid. Hence it is time to reciprocate Wike's generosity.

Stop rating Ikpeazu based on what you hear from Abia north.
And you think Peter Obi does not have money to give.
Is not even about Ikpeazu himself, the fact remains an average Ngwa man will choose Wike over Peter Obi.
I wonder why it seems difficult for you people to understand.
We are very close to them geographical wise..
Than to Peter Obi.
Whether Gov. Ugwuanyi support wike or not it does not change the fact that Enugu state indigenes will vote for Peter Obi over Wike..

You guys should come closer so won't have a wrong view of Abia state.
Note: There are enugu people carved into Abia state. There opinion she not confuse you with that of Abia majority.
