I am a medical practitioner. I chose Canada because I didn’t intend to practice. I always tell my colleagues, if you are big on practicing consider the UK or the US if you have money to spend. I know doctors who came to Canada, couldn’t practice, they got their Canadian citizenships and then wrote the licensing exams in Australia and some went to Middle East countries and they are being paid in those countries as Canadian professionals. Earning a lot more than what they would have earned if they had gone to those countries with their Nigerian passport. I even know some that went to the USA to get licensed and then moved back to Canada after years of practicing. Last last, every man is running their own race. We’ll all do what works for us.

Like eut1 said, the Canadian passport opens limitless number of opportunities. People should do their research and plan properly.

I know a consultant Hematologist (medical doctor) who couldn't cope with the cost of living in Canada, infact he couldn't practice his profession and he became frustrated. He left but his wife refused leaving, so they divorced. The man remarried after he came back to Nigeria and he's really doing so great and happy.

Reminds me about a friend of mine dating a girl he struggled for, babe traveled out to Canada , the plan was for him to follow suit based on they were head over heels and thinking of tying the knot, babe traveled and fashied my guy, my guy was constantly trying to get in touch and remind her of the past and what they shared, Omo the babe shenk am mad. It wasn't easy to console my guy and thank God he eventually bone the matter. What I learnt from the whole fiasco is that Nigeria girls will hardly push for you to join them in abroad, but a Nigerian man won't think twice to take his babe out of the country in a heartbeat.

The attraction these countries hold for so many Nigerians is that their governments aren't asleep at the wheel. As you said: government is present...and you feel it. You can't put a price on that.

Where your summary stands out so well is your second point about these countries being highly regulated. That is something quite a lot of Nigerians (who intend to emigrate) are unaware of or unprepared for. These countries run on rules and those rules will be enforced. Unfortunately, some of us can't easily adjust to a rules based system and inevitably they run into serious trouble.

I bought a home around Toronto within 2 years of moving to Canada. I lived in a box room in the UK for 11 years!

I am a prime professional who practiced in firms before setting up mine.

I know bankers who left Naija towards the end of last year who are holding down 2-3 jobs (enabled by the pandemic’s remote work) and making 20-30k monthly. I mean these are close friends.

While the traditional professions have rigid licensing processes in every country to test for determination, it is normal. When we went to Nigeria for the law school, even professors of law and accomplished lawyers from the US, UK, Canada et al, had to do Bar 1 with us. They did and some are accomplished politicians and lawyers in Nigeria today.

I know 2 SANs who did their accreditation and bar exams, and are now doing Articling in Toronto. It’s normal.

Yes, doctors like lawyers and all do same too. You either want it enough to soldier through or you stay in your comfort zone. If you push through, the rewards are huge. I have many lawyer colleagues making over $130k and some are immigration panel members (judges) within 2-3 years. I know 2 very close Nigerian professors of law in Canadian universities , they came in as students, who make over $300k.

Canada is today’s heaven. Lazy and unfocused people will promote harsh relativism as the general experience. But it’s crap!

If you come to Canada legally and have your PR, you can settle in 1-2 years and do great. Of course, lawyers and doctors may face a slower transition, but it’s worth it.

Bankers, IT professionals, business analysts among others should get great jobs within 2-4 months, if properly guided, and earn between $70-120k. I have seen tens of close friends go through it and doing great!

As per loneliness, it’s demand and supply. More black/Naija women who are single crowd the Naija community populated by men who largely have families before leaving Nigeria. Yes, professional Naija men are almost always married few years after university. If they use potential husbands to play boyfriend koso, who they go blame? Naija ladies can go back home and find their kind. It’s easier than deluding themselves that they will find Oyibo men here. Those who go home to look for husbands and lovers do find!

You simply do not get it. As a PR Holder, you will attend visa interview at the US consulate in Canada before you can be given access to the US. To your warped mind, PR comes with 10 years visiting. So Canada has the authority to issue US visa on behalf of the US ?.
