@ poster, sparing the rod is best in my opinion. I dont understand physical pain as a deterrent for good behavior. It never worked on me. There are better ways to discipline children.

If it did not work on you, then someone did not do it well.

It has worked and created good behaviour in many people, far more than reasoning with a child or soft punishment ever did.

@ El guapo, who told you that you are not spoilt?
We have the grace of God in so many people's lifes and they think it is by their power. If the grace and the prayers of your parents is covering you don't say you learn your values because you were not caned.
Just like the bible says, when u cane a child he will not die, and you will deliver his soul from evil. that is the work of man. God's addition is the grace and mercy He shows on us when we fall short of that discipline.
And note that the grace you had might not apply to another. Many children today have gone under because they were not disciplined/caned.
You need to cane your children but do it with love and let them know why you caned them and deliver their soul.
i cane mine and i was also caned when i was a child. I learn so many things from those times.

Impossible!!

I've vowed not to raise a cane against any of my Kid even the Erring Ones!!
My Parent never had to use a rod against me so while should i use One against my Children?!

The Real Fact about this Is that any Child that fails to gain a reputable Socialization and a harnessed teaching from the Parent is bound to go wayward and any ward who is destined to be a sad story In life certainly would be a sad story no matter how much Wealths, Advice, Harnessing, Socialization and even Canning u deliver to him!!

Nigerian bomber Farouk is a good example! grin

Evidence of Low internal locus of control (i.e. High external locus of control), which from research correlates with inferior leadership/managerial qualities and lower success rates.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internal_locus_of_control

http://www.legacee.com/Info/Leadership/LeadershipEntrepreneurial.html (See Leadership characteristics 4)

"Those with a high internal locus of control have better control of their behavior, tend to exhibit more political behaviors, and are more likely to attempt to influence other people than those with a high external (or low internal respectively) locus of control. Those with a high internal locus of control are more likely to assume that their efforts will be successful. They are more active in seeking information and knowledge concerning their situation."

"In the 1970s and 1980s, Whyte correlated locus of control with academic success of students enrolled in higher education courses. Students who tended to be more internally controlled believed that hard work and focus would result often times in successful academic progress and they performed better academically. Those students who were identified as more externally controlled, believing that their future depended upon luck or fate, tended to have lower academic performance levels."

"Successful leaders and entrepreneurs typically show a high internal locus of control (Lee, 2001). In many different studies done over the years, those with a high internal locus of control are more likely to experience success, than individuals who are high on the external locus of control."

I'd say the whip has its place, but the problem is, children tend to get used to it. It should be applied sparingly, and to useful effect. Not screaming at kids, brandishing a whip. Corporal punishment should be formally administered, and not used to threaten. Also, do't slap children around randomly. Make sure you have appropriate measures.

I thank my father for imbibing the highest internal locus of control in me. Right from being a toddler he always told us we were the best. That our blood was better than others. My internal locus of control is so high, I don't do religion. Before I even read about the shyt, my friends have pointed out that when you tell me I can't do something or something is impossible that is when I get annoyed and want to do it. And 9 times out of 10 I do it, and then ask you arrogantly what you said "about not being able to do" again. I am known for that! I take control of my life, results and destiny.

You can never get used to my dads beating. He is a pro. We always had like 5 canes at home, Koboko and later when i was teenage it graduated to electric cables.

How do you get used to that.

I was flogged once with electric cables. By one jobless uncle that my dad commissions to address those issues from time to time.
I was in JSS3 then, and 'chopped' money meant to pay for something in school. A gross felony/misdemeanour in my parents' eyes.

I believe in a combination of techniques.
the rod and rebuke.mix it up.
you can rebuke without the rod but never use the rod without rebuke.
by rebuke,i mean explaining to the child what he/she has done wrong and why it should not be repeated.
my wife used to try 'time out in your corner'.I found it a bit silly and she soon found out why. Our child just got used to hanging out in that corner and doing her little thing there until she even forgot why she was punished in the first place.

whatever you do,don't be too predictable.Else the child just gets used to it.

I flog shege comot my 6 yr daughter body d oda day. The first time I have really given her a thorough flogging. Who born her to lie to me?
My little neice perceived from her armpit d smell of a roll-on and quickly reported. I gently asked her. Did you use my roll on? "No mummy, I didnt. Say the truth or I will flog you. This girl refused. see me see trouble. Oya raise your hands, let me see. Hmm, see the smell. Even at that she refused telling the truth that she had gone to my room and applied it. I was so irritated by her continours denial. I couldnt hold myself.
The flogging was so much sha. na my neighbours come save am. I can not tolerate lies from children. shocked
