MikeofAfrica:

Soyinka is like Mikel Obi who won the EPL and Champions league but has no sublime talent. Hence even with his Nobel prizee, none of his readers can mention any of his books that is a masterclass.

Achebe is like Okocha who did not win the EPL or Champions league but has sublime talents. Hence people love his books all over the world.

His masterclass, Things fall Apart has been translated into over 50 languages.

With all the trophies win by Mikel, he is still inferior to Okocha in the soccer world. Similarly, even with the Nobel prize, Soyinka is still inferior to Achebe.

If not, then mention one of Soyinka books and let's compare the intellectual content with either four of these books by Achebe

1. Arrow of God
2. Things fall Apart
3. No longer at Ease
4. A man of the People

You can do all the dribbling in a match but if your opponent scores against you, especially in the world cup just like the Nobel,he becomes your superior, the oga patapata.

Prof Chinua Achebe died an envious man.
He was not as talented and versatile like Prof Soyinka who the literary world eventually honoured with the greatest of honour any writer craves for.It is the pinnacle, the apex.A pity it missed Prof Achebe.
He sulked until his demise.

These are what made the whites, the experts give Nobel Laurel to Prof Soyinka and not to the less versatile Prof Achebe.

Last I checked, Charly boy is over 70 and neither did he address Soyinka as a fool.
Yeah, it is easy for you to address people greater than you as fools or say they are stupid. Obviously, if they are as you say, it means you are the opposite right? You are smart and wise abi?
Anyway as I always say, Nigerians have "mouth". Only in Nigeria will you see a poor man trekking pass a mansion and then say the owner does not have taste, that if the owner had consulted him, he could have adviced him on a better design. Only in Nigeria will you see millionaires discussing business, a job seeker will put mouth to advice them on how to make money.
You that only recently applied for a job as a customercare staff in a mushroom company on the outskirts of Lagos is the same person addressing people obviously more than you as "fools" and "stupid". You really have mouth.

You just typed the wrong thing above.
Prof Wole Soyinka is the best.
Achebe focused majorly only on books/novel while Nobel laurel PROF Wole Soyinka focused on everything about literature- poems, script writing, plays, poetry, novels, essay, research, introduction of new words in the English dictionary and world encyclopedia. He is the best playwright in the world till date.
Cyprain Ekwensi and Elechi Amadi are even better than Achebe. If you doubt me go and read Elechi Amadi’s The concubine and compare it with any of Achebe’s books. Only Things fall apart came close.

Prof Soyinka wrote many books than all of them which includes
The trials of brother Jero.
Ibadan: The penkelemes.
The lion and the jewel.
The interpreters….written in 1965.
Ake.
Death and the king’s horseman
The man died: prison notes from Wole Soyinka.
The road.
Idanre and other poems.
Mandela’s earth and other poems
Ogun Abibímàn.
Madmen and his specialists.
Chronicles from the land of the happiest people.
You must set forth at dawn.
Of Africa
King Baabu
Collected plays by Soyinka.
Season of anomy. Written from prison.
The open sore of a continent.
Samarkand and other markets.
The strong breed.
Selected poems.
Child internationale
Climate of fear
The credo of being and nothingness.
Cam wood on the leaves.
From Zia with love.
The swamp dwellers
Alàpàta Apáta.
The beautification of the area boy.
Forest of a thousand daemons: A Hunter's Saga · Yoruba title: Ògbójú ọdẹ nínu igbó irúnmọlẹ Written by D.O Fagunwa translated by Wole Soyinka.
The Burden of Memory, the Muse of Forgiveness.
Art, dialogue and outrage.

And so many more books were written by him.

His books were used to set literature in English exam questions even in Cambridge A and O levels exams

He covers all aspects of literature unlike Achebe.
He is just the best.
Obidients and Charly boy has forgotten so soon that this great Yoruba man- prof Soyinka fought for Igbos: He wrote a good deal of Poems from Prison while he was jailed in 1967–69 for speaking out against the war brought on by the attempted secession of Biafra from Nigeria. The Man Died (1972) is his prose account of his arrest and 22-month imprisonment by Gowon for fighting for igbos.

He deserves more accolades and respect. An 88 years old still vibrant and healthy. A great mentor, erudite scholar and philanthropist

We don’t even have any Nobel prize winner in Nigeria except him till date.

The shame is on you. Your Achebe craved for Nobel Laurent but never got it and died in sorrow. You wished you could be like him but fate put you where you are. Have you ever won Grammy award before? Nope, not for nincompoops like you. Idiotic old man with no shame. You will also sulk till you go the way of Achebe

Stop beating around the bush. If you combine all Soyinka books together, they can still not compete with the master class, THINGS FALL APART.

Things Fall Apart has been translated into over fifty languages and read in over a hundred nations.

It is the most popular book ever written by an African author.

The Nobel Prize is far above and beyond that one book and its 'million' translations.

Stop it.

Achebe in his grave, isn’t fit to lace Soyinka’s boots.

Achebe died of bitterness about Awolowo and Soyinka.

And if we’re being honest, Achebe’s greatest achievement, “Things Fall Apart”, is one of the most overrated books ever. The book just hit the jackpot because it was released at the right time.

Mention one of Soyinka's works that can match Arrow of God, let's even leave Things Fall Apart that is still being studied all over the world.

Your Ignorance stems from your lack of exposure.

There is no Nigerian nay African, alive or dead whose books have been translated into as many languages as Achebe. Over 50 at last count a few years ago

There is NO university library in the developed world and even in less developed countries that does not have Achebe's books in the African Literature section.

Soyinka won a Nobel Prize for literature and that is a wonderful achievement but his influence has kept degrading while Achebe in death is still impacting literature students globally. Chimamanda drew inspiration from him and has taken the world, please name any person who drew inspiration from Soyinka and has dominated world Literature

As powerful as a Nobel is, it represents the decision of a 5 MAN committee and not the majority of stakeholders in any sector.

That's why Obama could be nominated and win a Nobel Prize before he ever did anything to deserve it.

Things Fall Apart alone has sold more than 10m copies and remains the best selling literature by ANY African alive or dead.

You can die in your bigotry but globally Wole Soyinka will ALWAYS take a back seat to Achebe in literary circles.

babtoundey:
Were said the respect he had for him is akin to the one he had for his father.. How respectable is a father that birthed and raised a fool like him.

Achebe was great. In fact, very great. But he couldn't achieve half of what Soyinka achieves in their line of business. Only an idiot would compare both of them. You find a match for WS when you see a prolific, successful and well know author who excels in writing drama, prose, Poetry, essays and theories. Achebe wrote only prose, the moment he dabbled into poetry, he flopped.

He did not win the Nobel prize awarded in1986 for a book published in 1965
That is ignorant and foolish talk.
He won the prize according to the academy

in a wide cultural perspective and with poetic overtones fashioning the drama of existence",
Unfortunately Achebe could not achieve this before his demise
Go and get a copy of the book and read from front cover to back cover.
What is ignorant and foolish is that you don't know the process and system of the Nobel Academy.
Albert Einstein got awarded in 1921 on the basis of the work he did in 1905.
Same goes for Max Planck and Niels Bohr
If Achebe is to be awarded today, it will be on the basis of 'Things Fall Apart'. All other talks will just be add-ons.

People eat more McDonalds than anything else does not make it good or healthy
from your logic porn is BIGGER than anything since it is The most popular thing on The internet

The truth is literature is not commercial writing otherwise James Hadley Chase and Jackie Collins would win Nobel prizes
Things Fall Apart was nothing spectacular literally.
It is a good read at the level of secondary school level.
What is the summary of Things Fall apart?Have you read it?
It's appeal was it was A FIRST.
Published at a time when no one has published anything out of Africa and the world wanted to see what Africa had to offer.
Nigerian government promoted it by using it's influence to make it compulsory reading for WAEC across West Africa
. Books were read across Africa in the post colonial era because the Nigerian government promoted them. Secondary school level writing is what Achebe was good at.
Soyinka wrote plays. He is a playwright like Shakespeare as well as a poet. He is not primarily a novelist. His plays have been performed at the Natiional Theatre in London. Literature is not just about novels
So.if you want to talk Nobel Prize in literature for the last 20 years do not look for the author of Harry Potter,Robert Ludlum ,Jackie Collins etc
Look for INTELLECTUAL works

Ben Okri,Christopher Okigbo and many other Nigerians have published much greater works than Achebe who wrote for children
grin Chai!

Stop playing the Ostrich and smell the coffee.

Soyinka is a playwright just like Shakespeare. Soyinka books flopped in the literally market while Shakespeare books are the bestsellers even after his demise.

Remember that Shakespeare used the most complicated English in his books yet people still purchase and read them. Hence your argument that Soyinka flopped because his book is advance does not hold water. He flopped because his books were inferior to that of his contemporaries.

Achebe is a master in his own area of literature. His work can compete with any author in the world. That is the reason he was regarded as the father of African literature.

He is our Okocha whose talent can compete with that of Ronaldo, Messi and Zidane even though he won no trophy. Soyinka is our Mikel Obi who even with their trophies are inferior to the household names in their profession.

Of course. I lost respect for the old fool the moment I discerned that he was just another rodent in Tinubu's cookie room. The idiot whose voice of condemnation was very loud against the Jonathan administration somehow retreated into his shell and became deaf and dumb throughout Buhari's disastrous 8 years of sorrow.

Now after a sham election has supposedly produced a bloody thief and drug baron as president, the useless Soyinka has found his voice again, not in condemnation of the election or of the disreputable criminal that was dubiously pronounced winner, but against the people yearning for a change. Obedients are repugnant fascists and he is ready to do a debate with Datti, but he conveniently has nothing to say about INEC, Tinubu, and the APC. This is the final straw.

Your Ignorance stems from your lack of exposure.

There is no Nigerian nay African, alive or dead whose books have been translated into as many languages as Achebe.
And Achebe can't hold a candle to JK Rowling, Danielle Steele or John Grisham in terms of either book sales or translations. I suppose by your criteria that makes these writers the greatest masters of the English language who ever lived or something?

It's pathetic the ridiculous lengths some of you will go to salve the chip on the shoulder you clearly have over Wole Soyinka having been awarded the ultimate prize in literature while Achebe never was. That's why you're sinking to such preposterous depths to argue that Achebe is "greater" because he (supposedly) sold more copies of his books, as if the likes of Wole Soyinka, William Faulkner, JM Coetzee, Saul Bellow and Yasunari Kawabata* could ever be regarded as "inferior" to purveyors of massively popular potboilers like "Dan Brown" of "Da Vinci Code" noteriety. It's the same inferiority complex that drove Charly Boy to gratuitously introduce Achebe into a discussion about Soyinka, as if he were putting forth his own tribal champion in a Roman gladiatorial contest.

*I'm sure you'd never even heard of these authors before now, let alone read anything by them, though you're ludicrously posturing as if you were some kind of literary savant.

A company can produce different items but if none of her products is a brand, that company can not be describe as a success story.
Toyota is a brand in the automobile industry. Innoson is not yet a brand hence even if the company produces ten different kinds of vehicles , a single kind of vehicle from Toyota will be rated above them.

From your list, can you pick out just two books from each of the categories that is a brand in the world of literature. Which of the plays from Soyinka can you compare with a play by Shakespeare who is a playwright. Which of Soyinka novel can compete with Achebe novels.

Ekwensi also wrote many books in different categories but his books were inferiors like that of Soyinka.

Hence with due respect, Soyinka and Ekwensi are at the same level in the literary world.
