Politics / Tinubu Apologises For Saying Pvcs Expire by 774ngr: 2:50pm On Jan 20, 2022
One of the presidential aspirants in the coming general elections Bola Tinubu has said he was wrong to have told his supporters that the permanent voter cards (PVCs) issued by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had expired.

While addressing some women leaders who paid him a visit in Abuja, the presidential aspirant said the PVCs in the possession of citizens have expired.

“In case they do not announce to you on time, the PVC you have has expired,” Tinubu had said.

“Take one family member, two family members, knock on all doors and make sure that the new registration… Because they may not announce to you on time. The PVCs you have expired. Yes!”

Politics / Soludo’s Politics Of Poverty, Market Photoshoot And Anambra 2021 by 774ngr: 3:37am On Sep 11, 2021
Nigerian politicians, in a build-up to the 2015 general elections, unveiled a yet to be matched sophistry in any electioneering campaign since the amalgamation of 1914. They christened it connecting to the poor masses but over the years Nigerians have acceded that these political gimmicks are the basest of mockery to their sensibilities.

Nigerians watched the theatre of the absurd; from the pap drinking Ortom of Benue to the ‘ponmo’ buying Fayose of Ekiti. Imolites laughed to smithereens as they watched Rochas bottle feed babies while roasting yellow corn by the roadside. Who would forget the corn eating duo of Oshiomole and Obaseki. And how Atiku gulped down sachets of pure water while eating from rusted aluminium plates made the comedy bearable.

Granted, these were theatrics they needed to display to prove they were felt what the masses were passing through but over the years , the policy thrust they unleashed after winning these elections have left Nigerians poorer. Politicians engaging in these shows of public sympathy after 2015 are regarded as retrogressive.

On Prof. Charles Chukwuma Soludo, when I saw pictures of him warming up to indigent market women at Oye Afuzor market in Isuofia and buying their wares, the emotions I went through in seconds were revulsion, disappointment, shame and exasperation. For a man of his standing to still play such politics of deprivation and public sympathy is way too low.

Former Manchester United captain Rio Ferdinand condemned social media firms for failing to crack down on racial abuse, warning they were helping to “normalize” such language among young people in schools.

The former England international told lawmakers on Thursday how he had to explain to his own children why people were leaving monkey and banana emojis under his posts on social media.

“Players shouldn’t have to go through this,” he told MPs and peers scrutinizing draft legislation into reforming social media rules for platforms like Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. “In the 70s and 80s, it was something that was a lot more common. We went through a period where maybe it was behind the scenes a little bit more, but now the data is telling us it’s here and it’s back.”

His testimony came two months after England stars were racially abused online after the country lost on penalties to Italy in the European Championship final. Prime Minister Boris Johnson said at the time that he “utterly” condemned the online abuse, and pledged that those found guilty would be banned from attended soccer matches.

The U.K.’s proposed Online Safety Bill would compel Silicon Valley giants to share information about the content on their platforms — a shift from the status quo where the companies provide it voluntarily — and aims to protect people from illegal and harmful content.

Nairaland / General / Israeli Filmmakers: Our Arrest And Torture By DSS by 774ngr: 9:27am On Aug 02, 2021
Rochman Rudy, one of the three Israeli filmmakers arrested by the State Security Service (SSS), says the experience in the hands of the captors typified the suffering of Igbos in Nigeria.

Rudy and fellow film-maker Noam Leibman and French-Israeli Journalist E. David Benaym were arrested by the secret police who accused them of supporting the activities of outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

The trio were arrested at Ogidi village, Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra State while shooting a documentary, “We Were Never Lost”, which explores Jewish communities in African countries such as Kenya, Madagascar, Uganda, and Nigeria.

They spent 20 days in detention without being charged to court by the Nigerian government.

However, in a statement released on his official Instagram page Saturday, Mr Rudy explained that they had set out to tell the story of the Igbo Jews before their unlawful arrest.

“We only managed to film for two days out of the two weeks planned in Igboland when armed militants wearing black ski masks forced us at gunpoint into a van, stripping us of our phones and passports. We didn’t see the light of day or had any form of communication with the outside world till we were released 20 days later,” Mr Rudy wrote.

Rudy stressed the need to reset focus on the Igbos who have been living in the reality of the 20 days of the ill-treatment they suffered at the hands of Nigeria’s secret police.

“Now that we are back, it’s important to reset and focus on the Igbo Jews who’ve faced what we went through their whole lives and still live with that reality daily,” he added.

The Israeli further disclosed that he and his team have been blocked from subsequent visits to Nigeria.

Igbos under President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration have constantly complained of marginalisation and maltreatment.

In May, Buhari in a tweet deemed genocidal threatened to deal with Igbo youths over the destruction of government facilities in the region.

The president, in a post shared on his official Twitter page, vowed that “those misbehaving” would “soon have the shock of their lives,” while referencing his role during the 1967 Biafra war where over a million people were gruesomely killed.

“Many of those misbehaving today are too young to be aware of the destruction and loss of lives that occurred during the Nigerian Civil War,” his deleted post said. “Those of us in the fields for 30 months, who went through the war, will treat them in the language they understand.”
